The carapace lengths, dry weights, carbon content and nitrogen content of decapod larvae sorted from fresh plankton samples were measured. Regressions for the relationships between dry weight and carapace length were determined for each infraorder and for lower taxa. Regressions between carbon content, nitrogen content and C:N ratio and dry weight were calculated for the different taxa and were compared with published data on larvae reared in the laboratory.

Decapod larvae often comprise a significant component of the zooplankton of estuaries and inshore waters (Lindley et al., 1994). Lindley (1988) has presented data on the relationship between dry weight and carapace length for brachyuran larvae from the plankton. Similar data for other groups of decapods and additional data and analyses for brachyurans are presented here with data on carbon and nitrogen content. Anger & Harms (1990) described the relationships between dry weight; carbon and nitrogen content for decapod larvae reared under controlled conditions in the laboratory. The results of measurements on specimens caught in the plankton in naturally varying conditions provide a comparison with laboratory reared larvae. Harms et al. (1994) compared dry weights and biochemical data for Carcinus maenas (Brachyura) larvae reared in the laboratory with specimens from the plankton off Helgoland. Dry weights of the last two zoea stages and the megalopa larvae from the plankton were higher. The percentage carbon, nitrogen and lipid content were higher in laboratory raised larvae which were fed on Artemia nauplii than in field specimens or in laboratory reared specimens fed on phytoplankton or starved.

In a number of previous reports observations on the seasonal abundance of the pelagic young of teleostean fish in the plankton off Plymouth have been recorded for the years 1924 to 1938 inclusive. Owing to the outbreak of war the series for the year 1939 is unfortunately not complete. Collections were, however, made until the last week in August. Previous records have always shown that the numbers of young fish caught in the last four months of the year, September to December, are insignificant and in consequence it is desirable that the results for 1939 should be published since they cover fully the period of production of almost all species of fish. It is, also, essential that these records should not be lost as the year 1939 has been the worst yet recorded and sets a new low limit to the production of fish. It is much to be deplored that the sequence of observations may be broken, so that we may never know what point the trough of the decline may reach.

For the management of mollusc resources, knowledge of various population parameters and exploitation level of the population of wedge clams are needed. Population dynamics on wedge clam, Donax scortum is still unknown in Asia. FAO-ICLARM Stock Assessment Tools (commonly known as FiSAT) was used for calculating population parameters of this species. The specimens of D. scortum were collected from Padukere sandy beach at monthly intervals from February 2009 to January 2010. Asymptotic length (Lα) was 70.88 mm and growth coefficient (K) was estimated at 0.64 year−1. The sizes attained by D. scortum were 33.51, 51.17, 60.49, 65.40, 67.99 and 69.36 mm at the end of first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth years of age, respectively. Density of clams ranged from 2 ind. m−2 (June, July and August) to 8 ind. m−2 (December). Biomass (total weight) of clams ranged between 10.084 g m−2 (August) to 185.100 g m−2 (December). Total mortality (Z) for D. scortum was 3.20 year−1. Natural mortality (M) and fishing mortality (F) were 0.64 year−1 and 2.56 year−1 respectively. Exploitation level (E) was computed as 0.80, indicating that the fishery of D. scortum in the coastal waters of Karnataka is overexploited.

Five species of rockling: Gaidropsaurus vulgaris (Cloquet), G. mediterraneus (L.), Rhinonemus (Enchelyopus) cimbrius (L.), Ciliata mustela (L.) and C. septentrionalis (Collett), are commonly recorded from British waters. With the exception of G. mediterraneus, which has not been recorded from the North Sea, the other four species occur all round the British coasts. Two additional species have recently been added to the list of British fishes, Antonogadus macrophthalmus (Günther), a southern boreal species and Onogadus argentatus (Reinhardt), a northern boreal species (Wheeler, 1969; Russell, 1976). The identity of adult A. macrophthalmus is, however, still in confusion. It is not clearly known if it is a different species from A. megalokynodon Kolombotovic (a species which occurs in the Mediterranean and adjacent Atlantic waters), since both of them are considered as synonyms of G. biscayensis (Collett) (Bini, 1970; Tortonese, 1970; Svetovidov, 1973). Cohen & Russo (1979) have since relegated Onogadus and Antonogadus to synonyms of Gaidropsaurus, though the exact number of species is uncertain.

The higher taxonomic structure of the meiofaunal community was investigated in three eastern Mediterranean lagoons, an open (Vassova), a semi-closed (Piges) and a closed lagoon (Alykes Kitrous). In total, 22 stations representing characteristic features in each lagoon were sampled. Stations were found to support a maximum of 19 meiofaunal taxa with densities ranging from 1 to 10,000 individuals per 10 cm2. Nematodes were dominant at all sites (30–97%) except at the hypersaline sites, where ciliates outnumbered all metazoan meiofaunal taxa (53–77%). Uni- and multivariate analyses were applied to study the community structure. The number of taxa and the meiofaunal density showed strong spatial differences in all three lagoons; however, the main source of variation occurred between the semi-closed and closed lagoons. Both the meiofaunal composition and density were significantly less at the hypersaline sites which had salinity above 100 psu. The meiofaunal distribution pattern was shown to be controlled by abiotic factors, in particular vertical stratification of salinity, bottom water currents and oxygen availability at the bottom water–sediment interface. However, the distribution of feeding resources (e.g. cyanobacteria, phytodetritus) was also found to play a key role in structuring meiofaunal communities.

Calliopaea bellula, a sacoglossan opisthobranch, was recently found in the Ria Formosa, a coastal lagoon in southern Portugal feeding upon eggs of the cephalaspidean opisthobranch Haminoea orbignyana, the second most abundant gastropod inhabiting the sea grass habitats in the lagoon. The feeding behaviour of C. bellula is described together with photographic images of this process. Egg-masses of other common opisthobranch species collected in the Ria Formosa were also offered, but they were always rejected. This is the first known case of predation on eggs of H. orbignyana.

Determining optimal temperature and salinity for marine organisms is a challenge for marine ecologists because not every species can be easily maintained in the laboratory for testing the influence of environmental parameters. To find a simple method to estimate the optimal temperature and salinity for marine organisms based on survey data, a reciprocal quadratic yield-density model was used for determining the optimal temperature or salinity from abundance data for six pelagic Chaetognatha species. The data for the modelling were collected in four surveys in the East China Sea (23°30′–33°N 118°30′–128°E) from 1997 to 2000. According to both survey data and results from the models, we analysed qualitatively and quantitatively the ecological characteristics of those species. Estimated optimal temperatures and salinities are 17.3°C and 14.1‰ for Sagitta nagae, 20.3°C and 13.8‰ for S. bedoti, 24.9°C and 32.9‰ for S. enflata, 22.5°C and 16.5‰ for S. ferox, 24.5°C and 34.1‰ for S. pacifica and 17.3°C and 14.1‰ for S. pulchra, respectively. Three ecological groups were evident in the East China Sea: the neritic, warm temperate water species (S. nagae); the neritic, warm water species (S. pulchra, S. ferox and S. bedoti); and the oceanic, warm water species (S. enflata and S. pacifica). Our results validate that the model is applicable for describing the relationship between chaetognaths abundance and temperature or salinity.

Size frequency distribution, catch per unit effort (CPUE) and biomass of blue swimming crab Portunus segnis were studied in the northern Persian Gulf. A total of 1689 male and 1824 female crabs were collected by swept area method on a monthly basis from May 2010 to September 2012. The populations of male and female crabs were dominated by adult crabs (carapace width >100 mm) from December to May. The juvenile crabs were dominant from June to October and the averages of CPUE did uptrend from June to October. The CPUE increased in full moon and the highest value was observed in shallow coastal areas below 10 m and significantly decreased as depth increased. The maximum CPUE was recorded at 415 and 450 engine powers and the vessel speeds of about 2.5 and 2.8 knots. The monthly biomass estimations showed an upward trend from June to October within the study period, so that the maximum biomass was 110 tonnes in October 2011. Given the CPUE trend and biomass estimation, the results of the present study suggest that October is the optimum time as open fishery season for blue swimming crab in the northern Persian Gulf and the highest CPUE is achievable in shallow coastal areas at less than 10 m depth.

The sponge genus Strongylodesma is reviewed and redefined, and now accommodates eight closely related species. The type species of Strongylodesma Lévi is redescribed and an additional two new species are described from the Indo-Pacific: S. novaecaledoniae sp. nov. and S. tongaensis sp. nov. Several specimens previously identified as species of Batzella (Poecilosclerida: Chondropsidae) have been re-assigned to Strongylodesma, as the new species S. purpureus sp. nov. and S. nigra sp. nov. With the description here of new species from the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Atlantic, the biogeographical distribution of Strongylodesma now appears to be generally tropical with a subtropical South African component, whereas previously it was only known from South Africa. Although species of Strongylodesma have not previously been recorded from the intermediate locations (Western Indian Ocean, South-east Asia, central west Pacific, and New Zealand), re-evaluation here will facilitate more readily the recognition of taxa in these intermediate regions, if they exist, in the future. The species are not widespread, except perhaps along the south-east coast of South Africa, and where they occur they are not abundant. Species occur over a wide depth range, from the intertidal in Tsitsikamma, South Africa, to 140 m in the Caribbean.

Anyone who has examined the so-called “protective” spines of the various Zoæa larvæ must have been struck by their great tendency to develop in one straight line, parallel to the long axis of the body. Among the Macrura this is the case in the Zooæ of Peneus, in the larva attributed by Claus to Hippolyte, and in the Galatheidé. In the Brachyura the same result is attained in a slightly different way.

Oersted in 1843 gave a brief description of Dodecaceria concharum collected from the Kattegat. This was inadequate for identifying the species. Caullery and Mesnil in 1898 described three forms of Dodecaceria (A, B and C) but they were uncertain which form Oersted described. Dehorne in 1933 described D caulleryi (now D. fimbriata), which reproduce asexually, and Form B of Caullery and Mesnil. By default Form B became D. concharum the parthenogenetic species Form A of Caullery and Mesnil. Gibson and Heppell in 1995 in an attempt to consolidate these names deposited new types for the two species at the Cambers Street Museum in Edinburgh.

Studies of cyanobacterial bloom dynamics show that the highest biomass accumulation of Nodularia spumigena is observed in the shallowest area of the Gulf of Gdańsk in summer. In the same region and time, the highest fish abundance is observed. Mostly young individuals of gobies, small sandeel, flounder, three-spine stickleback and young herring occur. In this work we compare how toxic blooms of cyanobacteria influence the number and structure of fish communities in a coastal zone. The results obtained in our study were rather unexpected. More fish species were caught and the biomass of fish was higher during a bloom than in a month following the sampling (no bloom).

Acetabularia (Dasycladaceae: Chlorophyta) is a giant unicellular marine alga possessing a single nucleus but several millions of chloroplasts and mitochondria. It presents a polar growth and a peculiar morphological differentiation, comprising the development of a branched rhizoid at its basal end, where the nucleus is located, and the formation of several seriated whorls and then a reproductive cap at the apex of the stalk. Acetabularia is particularly useful in many fields of cellular and molecular biology. Recent work and current ideas on its developmental biology are summarized and discussed.

The assemblage structure of harpacticoid copepods inhabiting the soft sediments of littoral and sublittoral areas of Cat Ba archipelago (South China Sea) is analysed. Three basic types of harpacticoid taxocenes were observed in the upper sublittoral. Main dominant species of taxocenes were Amphiascoides sp., Stenhelia latioperculata, Paramphiascella sp., Phyllopodopsyllus sp., Tisbe sp.1 and Amphiascoides sp. In addition, the main characteristics of harpacticoid species composition in littoral rock pools are described. A comparative analysis of shallow-water harpacticoid communities from different biotopes of the tropical region is presented, and shows that harpacticoid diversity and abundance are lowest in muddy sediments. Highest diversity and abundance are found in washed sands and silty sands with detritus. In general, the structure of muddy bottom communities is the most homogeneous throughout the tropics. Mangrove forests have no significant influence on harpacticoid taxocene structure. Harpacticoid associations of washed sands and silty sands with detritus demonstrate greater diversity and are region-specific.

Long-term studies in the abyssal north-east Atlantic (1989–2005) have revealed large-scale changes in the benthic ecosystem and especially in some megafaunal invertebrate taxa over the period 1996–2002, termed the ‘Amperima Event’. Holothurians dominated the megafaunal samples. Temporal patterns in the abundance of holothurians showed a wide spectrum of responses, possibly related to the feeding and reproductive characteristics of the various species. One of the holothurians, the synallactid Paroriza prouhoi, is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, providing a distinct comparison with dioecious reproductive patterns more typical of deep-sea holothurian species. The reproductive biology and abundance/biomass patterns of P. prouhoi were investigated over the period 1989–2005. Paroriza prouhoi produces oocytes with a maximum diameter of ~370 µm. It has asynchronous patterns of gametogenesis both at the individual and population levels. Mean oocyte diameter and the ratio between previtellogenic and vitellogenic oocytes showed no significant differences between the periods prior to and after the Amperima Event. There were no significant differences in abundance or biomass over the time series. We conclude that the energy investment into gamete production by this hermaphrodite did not change over the 16 years examined. It is hypothesized that the feeding characteristics of P. prouhoi lead to a slow, steady and consistent production of gametes despite large-scale changes in organic matter supply to the seabed evident at the time series locality.

Here we describe habitat use and the grazing effects of the sea urchin Tetrapygus niger and the gastropod Tegula atra in the low intertidal zone of a rocky shore in central Peru (Ancón bay: 11°46′S 77°12′W), where these two species were documented as coexisting with no evidence of habitat segregation between them. Gut content and isotopic analyses revealed differences between their diets: T. atra consumes mainly microalgae while Tetrapygus niger consumed also benthic macroalgae. Individual grazing effects were evaluated with inclusion/exclusion experiments. Tetrapygus niger prevented the colonization of the substrate by sessile organisms, including the dominant mussel Semimytilus algosus, while Tegula atra reduced the abundance of microalgae and green ephemeral macroalgae during early succession, but these effects were overwhelmed by the rapid increase in cover of S. algosus. We suggest that Tetrapygus niger plays a key role in this low intertidal community. Through directly limiting mussels to monopolize the substratum, T. niger can reduce the diversity of mussel associated species; conversely, through controlling primary space holders, T. niger can also benefit other grazers that live on bare substrate by maintaining a suitable area for feeding or living.

The specific humoral immune response of sea bream, Sparus aurata (L.), against Vibrio anguillarum O1 and Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida (Phdp) after immunization with commercial and experimental bacterins was analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. Specific anti-V. anguillarum O1 and anti-Phdp levels provoked by the adjuvanted commercial vaccine reached higher levels in comparison to the aqueous commercial and experimental bacterins. Infection of vaccinated fish with V. anguillarum O1 bacterial cells acted as a boost of the humoral immune response, except for the sera of the group vaccinated with the adjuvanted vaccine. Infection with Phdp acted as a boost of the humoral immune response mainly for the group vaccinated with a monovalent Phdp bacterin and to a lesser degree for the group vaccinated with the aqueous commercial vaccine. Western blot analysis of the sera against V. anguillarum O1 whole cell antigens revealed strong reactions to only a few antigens below 54 kD and above 15 kD and weak reactions to other antigens. Similar reactions were observed from the sera isolated from the controls. Western blot analysis of the sera against Phdp whole cell antigens revealed strong reactions to only a handful of antigens below 20.7 and below 6.4 kD. Sera from the control group, as in the case of V. anguillarum O1, reacted with Phdp whole cell antigens. No differences regarding antigen reactions between monovalent and bivalent formulations were noted, in contrast to the adjuvanted and aqueous bacterins.

This study constitutes a first attempt to investigate sex differences in osmoregulatory capacity and metabolic responses in relation to hyper- and hypo-osmoregulation in the intertidal euryhaline crab Uca tangeri. Adult male and female specimens from Cadiz Bay, Spain (36°23′–37′N 6°8′–15′W), were acclimated to three different environmental salinities (12, 33 and 55 psu) during 7 days, and several parameters were assessed in haemolymph (osmolality, glucose, amino acids, triglycerides and lactate) as well as in metabolic key organs (hepatopancreas, anterior and posterior gills: glycogen, free glucose, amino acids and triglycerides). Specimens from both sex exhibited high and similar hyper- and hypo-osmoregulatory capacities. However, metabolite levels were differentially affected upon acclimation to low and high salinity in several metabolic organs and haemolymph of male and females: (i) glycogen in gills, (ii) free glucose in gills and hepatopancreas, (iii) amino acids in hepatopancreas, (iv) triglycerides in haemolymph, hepatopancreas and posterior gills, and (v) lactate in haemolymph. The results suggest the occurrence of differential metabolic adjustments upon hyper- and hypo-osmoregulation related to sex in the intertidal euryhaline crab U. tangeri.

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are abundant in many coastal ecosystems, including the coastal Everglades. Understanding spatial and temporal variation in their abundance and group sizes is important for estimating their potential ecological importance and predicting how environmental changes (e.g. ecosystem restoration) might impact their populations. From August 2010 to June 2012, we completed a total of 67 belt transects covering a total of 2650 linear km and an area of 1232 km2. Dolphin densities varied spatially and temporally. The highest densities of dolphins were found in coastal oceans and inland bays and were lowest in rivers. Use of rivers, however, increased during the dry season while densities in other habitats remained similar across seasons. Dolphins appeared to prefer portions of bays close to mangrove-covered islands over open waters. A resighting rate of 63.6% of individuals across the 2-year study suggests that at least a portion of the population is probably resident within study regions over long time periods. The largest groups (mean 6.28, range 1–31) were found in open waters and bays despite apparently low predation pressure. Indeed, shark bite scars – likely the result of unsuccessful predation attempts – were conclusively observed on only 1% of individuals. Although further studies are warranted, the high densities of dolphins suggest that they are an important upper trophic level predator in the coastal Everglades, but their ecological importance probably varies in space and time.

Two new species of free-living marine nematodes, Litinium dispariseta sp. nov. and Wieseria minor sp. nov. are described from an abyssal plain with a water depth of 4117–5035 m near the Southern Kyushu-Palau Ridge in the tropical Western Pacific Ocean. Litinium dispariseta sp. nov. is characterized by having distinct inner labial setae two times longer than the outer labial setae, wrench-like amphideal foveas, a single preanal midventral supplementary seta and a short cylindrical tail with bluntly rounded tip. It differs from congeners by its distinctly long inner labial setae relative to the outer labial setae (two times longer vs shorter or equal in length) and peculiar wrench-like amphideal foveas (vs horseshoe shaped or ovoid with round to oval anterior aperture). Wieseria minor sp. nov. has a clavate tail, a character found only in the four congeners W. glandulosa (Kreis, 1929), W. longiseta (Allgén, 1947), W. clavata Gerlach, 1956 and W. inaequalis Gerlach, 1956. However, Wieseria minor sp. nov. differs from these congeners by its much smaller body size (1045 µm vs 2120–3125 µm) and oblong amphideal foveas with double contour (vs a single oblong or ovoid loop). An emended diagnosis for Wieseria and pictorial keys for Litinium and Wieseria are provided.
