It is shown that a convex body K tiles Ed by translation if, and only if, K is a centrally symmetric d-polytope with centrally symmetric facets, such that every belt of K (consisting of those of its facets which contain a translate of a given (d – 2)-face) has four or six facets. One consequence of the proof of this result is that, if K tiles Ed by translation, then K admits a face-to-face, and hence a lattice tiling.

In a recent paper I. J. Schoenberg [1] considered relations

where the av are rational integers and the ζv are roots of unity. We may in (1) replace all negative coefficients av by −av replacing at the same time ζv by −ζv so that we may, if it is convenient, assume that all av are positive. If we do this and arrange the ζr so that their arguments do not decrease with v then (1) can, as suggested by Schoenberg (oral communication) be interpreted as a convex polygon with integral sides whose angles are rational when measured in degrees. Accordingly we shall call a relation (1) a polygon if all av are non-negative. We shall call a polygon (1) k-sided if all av are positive. The polygon is called degenerate if two of the ζv are equal. Schoenberg calls these polygons polar rational polygons (abbreviated prp) because the vectors composing them have rational coordinates in their polar representations. Schoenberg showed that every prp can be obtained as a linear combination with integral positive or negative coefficients of regular p-gons where p is a prime.

The purpose of this note is to bring into attention an apparently forgotten result of C. M. Petty: a convex body has minimal surface area among its affine transformations of the same volume if, and only if, its area measure is isotropic. We obtain sharp affine inequalities which demonstrate the fact that this “surface isotropic” position is a natural framework for the study of hyperplane projections of convex bodies.

An orbitope is the convex hull of an orbit of a compact group acting linearly on a vector space. These highly symmetric convex bodies lie at the crossroads of several fields, including convex geometry, algebraic geometry, and optimization. We present a self-contained theory of orbitopes, with particular emphasis on instances arising from the groups SO(n) and O(n); these include Schur–Horn orbitopes, tautological orbitopes, Carathéodory orbitopes, Veronese orbitopes, and Grassmann orbitopes. We study their face lattices, algebraic boundaries, and representations as spectrahedra or projected spectrahedra.

It is well known that a first approximation to the flow of a viscous liquid in the neighbourhood of a boundary with a corner may be obtained by solving the linearized equations of momentum neglecting the inertia terms. This has been done by Dean and Montagnon [1] for the plane steady flow near a corner formed by two inclined planes. The following is a similar analysis of the modes by which a liquid can form a free surface starting at the edge of a rigid boundary. The formulation differs from that of Dean and Montagnon mainly in that the angle at which the free surface is formed is in the first place unspecified and has to be determined from the analysis.

This paper provides an overview of interpolation of Banach and Hilbert spaces, with a focus on establishing when equivalence of norms is in fact equality of norms in the key results of the theory. (In brief, our conclusion for the Hilbert space case is that, with the right normalizations, all the key results hold with equality of norms.) In the final section we apply the Hilbert space results to the Sobolev spaces $H^{s}({\rm\Omega})$ and $\widetilde{H}^{s}({\rm\Omega})$, for $s\in \mathbb{R}$ and an open ${\rm\Omega}\subset \mathbb{R}^{n}$. We exhibit examples in one and two dimensions of sets ${\rm\Omega}$ for which these scales of Sobolev spaces are not interpolation scales. In the cases where they are interpolation scales (in particular, if ${\rm\Omega}$ is Lipschitz) we exhibit examples that show that, in general, the interpolation norm does not coincide with the intrinsic Sobolev norm and, in fact, the ratio of these two norms can be arbitrarily large.

The indentation produced by an axially symmetrical punch bearing on the plane surface of an elastic half-space has been considered by Harding and Sneddon [1], who used Hankel transforms and a well-known pair of dual integral equations, and for the case of a spherical punch they took the indenting surface to be part of the approximating paraboloid of revolution. Chong [2], also using these dual integral equations has treated the case of a symmetrical punch of polynomial form and considers a two-termed expansion for a spherical punch. More recently, Payne [3] has given the exact solution for a spherical punch using either oblate spheroidal coordinates or toroidal coordinates.

Let K, K′ be two centrally symmetric convex bodies in En, with their centres at the origin o. Let Vr denote the r-dimensional volume function. A problem of H. Busemann and C. M. Petty [1], see also, H. Busemann [2] asks:—

“If, for each (n − 1)-dimensional subspace L of En,

does it follow that

If n = 2 or, if K is an ellipsoid, then Busemann [3] shows that it does follow. However we will show that, at least for n ≥ 12, the result does not hold for general centrally symmetric convex bodies K, even if K′ is an ellipsoid. We do not construct the counter example explicitly; instead we use a probabilistic argument to establish its existence.

As a consequence of the methods developed in the earlier papers of this series [1, 2, 3], an effective algorithm has recently been established for solving many Diophantine equations in two unknowns (see [4,5,6,7]). The algorithm leads to an explicit bound for the size of all the solutions, and, in principle therefore, it enables any specific equation of the type considered to be fully resolved by a finite amount of computation. On examining the various estimates occurring in the course of the exposition, however, it at once became apparent that the computation would involve a very large number of operations and would scarcely be practicable even with a modern machine. It was clear, on the other hand, that a modified version of the fundamental inequality involving the logarithms of algebraic numbers would much facilitate the computational work, and it was in the light of this observation that the researches discussed herein were begun. The object has been to obtain a theorem of an essentially practical nature which may be found useful in application to a wide variety of different problems. The result which we shall establish is neither the most precise nor the most general that can be obtained in this direction, but it would seem to be the most serviceable of its kind, and it would apparently make feasible many calculations which would otherwise have seemed quite out of the question.

It is well known that an indefinite quadratic form with integral coefficients in 5 or more variables always represents zero properly, and this has raised the problem of proving a similar result for forms of higher degree, namely that such a form, of degree r, represents zero properly if the number of variables exceeds some number depending only on r. For a form of odd degree, no condition corresponding to indefiniteness is needed, but for a form of even degree (4 or more) some even stronger condition must be required.

It is well-known and easy to prove that the maximal line segments on the boundary of a convex domain in the plane are countable. T. J. McMinn [1] has shown that the end-points of the unit vectors drawn from the origin in the directions of the line segments lying on the surface of a convex body in 3-dimensional Euclidean space E3 form a set of σ-finite linear Hausdorff measure on the 2-dimensional surface of the unit ball. A. S. Besicovitch [2] has given a simpler proof of McMinn's result. W. D. Pepe, in a paper to appear in the Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., has extended the result to E4. In this paper we generalize McMinn's result to En by use of Besicovitch's method, proving:

THEOREM 1. If K is a convex body in En, the set S, of end-points of the vectors drawn from origin in the directions of the line segments lying on the surface of K, is a set of σ-finite (n − 2)-dimensional Hausdorff measure on the (n − 1)-dimensional surface of the unit ball.

Packing measures have been introduced to complement the theory of Hausdorff measures in [13,14]. (For a new treatment see also [10, Chapter 5]. While Hausdorff measures are intimately connected to upper density estimates (see, e.g., [5,2.10.18]), the importance of packing measures stems from their connection to lower density estimates.

This paper is concerned with the solution of the following interesting geometrical problem. For what set of n points on the sphere is the sum of all Euclidean distances between points maximal, and what is the maximum?

Our starting point is the following surprising “invariance principle” due to K. B. Stolarsky: The sum of the distances between points plus the quadratic average of a discrepancy type quantity is constant. Thus the sum of distances is maximized by a well distributed set of points. We now introduce some notation to make the statement more precise.

The problem of estimating the fractional dimension of sets of continued fractions emerged in late twenties in papers by Jarnik [6, 7] and Besicovitch [1] and since then has been addressed by a number of authors (see [2, 4, 5, 8, 9]). In previous papers [1, 2], the authors have solved the Stokes flow problem for certain axially symmetric bodies, with the velocity at infinity uniform and parallel to the axis of symmetry. Each of the bodies considered possessed the property that the meridional section intercepted a segment of the axis of symmetry. In the present paper this assumption is removed; in addition, we shall consider the particular case of the Stokes flow about a torus.

In many investigations into the properties of convex bodies, authors have made use of distance functions ρ(K1K2) which give a measure of the “nearness” of two convex bodies K1 and K2. Sometimes they have introduced new functions to deal with particular problems. The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast the properties of four of these functions, namely all those (so far as we are aware) which occur in the literature and have the property that they are metrics on the set of all convex bodies of some given dimension.
