In this note new proofs will be given for two inequalities on polynomials due to N. I. Feldman [1] and A. 0. Gelfond [2], respectively; these inequalities are of importance in the theory of transcendental numbers. While the original proofs by the two authors are quite unconnected, we shall deduce both results from the same source, viz. from Jensen's integral formula in the theory of analytic functions.

Although there is an extensive literature dealing with the location of characteristic roots of matrices, the problem of estimating the maximum distance between two characteristic roots of a given matrix does not appear to have attracted much attention. In the present note we shall be concerned with this problem.

Let K be a convex compact body with nonempty interior in the d-dimensional Euclidean space Rd and let x1, …, xn be random points in K, independently and uniformly distributed. Define Kn = conv {x1, …, xn}. Our main concern in this paper will be the behaviour of the deviation of vol Kn from vol K as a function of n, more precisely, the expectation of the random variable vol (K\Kn). We denote this expectation by E (K, n).

In the stream-line motion of fluid in a curved pipe the primary motion along the line of the pipe is accompanied by a secondary motion in the plane of the cross-section. The secondary motion decreases the rate of flow produced by a given pressure gradient and causes an outward movement of the region where the primary motion is greatest. It is difficult to deduce these consequences from the exact equations of motion, but it is easy to do so if it is assumed that the actual secondary motion is replaced by a uniform stream; conditions in the central part of the section mainly determines the motion and here the secondary motion is approximately a uniform stream. The appropriate velocity of the stream can be determined from the relation that has been found experimentally between the rate of flow in a curved pipe and the pressure gradient.

Görtler vortices are thought to be the cause of transition in many fluid flows of practical importance. In this paper a review of the different stages of vortex growth is given. In the linear regime nonparallel effects completely govern this growth and parallel flow theories do not capture the essential features of the development of the vortices. A detailed comparison between the parallel and nonparallel theories is given and it is shown that at small vortex wavelengths the parallel flow theories have some validity; otherwise nonparallel effects are dominant. New results for the receptivity problem for Gortler vortices are given; in particular vortices induced by free-stream perturbations impinging on the leading edge of the wall are considered. It is found that the most dangerous mode of this type can be isolated and its neutral curve is determined. This curve agrees very closely with the available experimental data. A discussion of the different regimes of growth of nonlinear vortices is also given. Again it is shown that, unless the vortex wavelength is small, nonparallel effects are dominant. Some new results for nonlinear vortices of O(l) wavelengths are given and compared with experimental observations. The agreement between theory and experiment is shown to be excellent up to the point where unsteady effects become important. For small wavelength vortices the nonlinear regime is of particular interest since a strongly nonlinear theory can be developed there. Here the vortices can be large enough to drive the mean state which then adjusts itself to make all modes neutral. The breakdown of this nonlinear state into a three-dimensional time dependent flow is also discussed.

The best known result on distance sets is due to Steinhaus [11], namely, that, if E ⊂ ℝn is measurable with positive n-dimensional Lebesgue measure, then D(E) contains an interval [0, ε) for some ε > 0. A number of variations of this have been examined, see Falconer [6, p. 108] and the references cited therein.

1. The purpose of this paper is to give simple proofs for some recent versions of Linnik's large sieve, and some applications.

The first theme of the large sieve is that an arbitrary set of Z integers in an interval of length N must be well distributed among most of the residue classes modulo p, for most small primes p, unless Z is small compared with N. Following improvements on Linnik's original result [1] by Rényi [2] and by Roth [3], Bombieri [4] recently proved the following inequality: Denote by Z(a, p) the number of integers in the set which are congruent to a modulo p.

We work throughout in n-dimensional Euclidean space. It has been clear, since the publication of [1], that it should be possible to obtain quite good upper bounds for the number of spherical caps of chord 2 required to cover the surface of a sphere of radius R > 1, and for the number of spheres of radius 1 required to cover a sphere of radius R > 1. But it is not quite simple to organize the necessary calculations to give estimates which are manageable, and which are as good as the method allows for all R > 1. The following results seem to be a reasonable compromise between precision and simplicity; but, for reasons we will give later, they are not completely satisfactory.

Consider a set of n points lying in a square of side 1. Verblunsky has shown that, if n is sufficiently large, there is some path through all n points whose length does not exceed (2·8n)1/2+2. L. Fejes Tóth has drawn attention to the case when the n points consist of all points of a regular hexagonal lattice lying in the unit square, in which case the length of the shortest path is easily seen to be asymptotically equal to

One of the most beautiful and important results in geometric convexity is Hadwiger's characterization theorem for the quermassintegrals. Hadwiger's theorem classifies all continuous rigid motion invariant valuations on convex bodies as consisting of the linear span of the quermassintegrals (or, equivalently, of the intrinsic volumes) [4]. Hadwiger's characterization leads to effortless proofs of numerous results in integral geometry, including various kinematic formulas [7, 9] and the mean projection formulas for convex bodies [10]. Hadwiger's result also provides a connection between rigid motion invariant set functions and symmetric polynomials [1, 7].

Divisorial ideals arose in the investigations of Van der Waerden, Artin, and Krull in the 1930's and were called v-ideals by Krull [9; 118]. The concept has played an important role in the development of multiplicative ideal theory.

Let $\mathcal {O} \subset \mathbb {R}^d$ be a bounded domain of class $C^{1,1}$. In the Hilbert space $L_2(\mathcal {O};\mathbb {C}^n)$, we consider a matrix elliptic second order differential operator $\mathcal {A}_{D,\varepsilon }$ with the Dirichlet boundary condition. Here $\varepsilon \gt 0$ is the small parameter. The coefficients of the operator are periodic and depend on $\mathbf {x}/\varepsilon $. There are no regularity assumptions on the coefficients. A sharp order operator error estimate $\|\mathcal {A}_{D,\varepsilon }^{-1} - (\mathcal {A}_D^0)^{-1} \|_{L_2 \to L_2} \leq C \varepsilon $ is obtained. Here $\mathcal {A}^0_D$is the effective operator with constant coefficients and with the Dirichlet boundary condition.

Two spheres of different radii are approaching each other with equal and opposite velocities, the fluid flow around them being at low Reynolds number. The forces on the spheres can be calculated when they are very close by applying an asymptotic analysis — usually called lubrication theory — to the flow in the gap between the spheres. If the non-dimensional gap width is ε, the force is calculated here correct to O(ε In ε) for all ratios of the two spheres' radii. The analysis can be combined with earlier numerical calculations to find all the constants in the asymptotic expansion correct to O(ε).

We continue the study of approximate subdifferentials initiated in [3], this time for functions on arbitrary locally convex spaces. The complexity of the infinite dimensional theory is in particular determined by the fact that various approaches and definitions which are equivalent in the finite dimensional situation are, in general, no longer equivalent if the space is infinite dimensional.

1. Introduction. Let I0 be a closed rectangle in Euclidean n-space, and let ℬ be the field of Borel subsets of I0. Let ℱ be the space of completely additive set functions F, having a finite real value F(E) for each E of ℬ, and left undefined for sets E not in ℬ. In recent work, we used Hausdorff measures in an attempt to analyze the set functions F of ℱ. If h(t) is a monotonic increasing continuous function of t with h(0) = 0, a measure h-m(E) is generated by the method first defined by Hausdorff [2].

This theoretical work shows formally that unsteady interactive boundary layers can break up within a finite time by encountering a nonlinear localized singularity. The theory is an extension of, and is guided to a large extent by, Brotherton-Ratcliffe and Smith's (1987) work on a special case. Two major types of singularity are proposed, a “moderate” type yielding a singular pressure gradient and a “severe” type associated with a pressure discontinuity. Each type produces a singular response in the skin friction in the case of wall-bounded flows. The present finite-time singularity applies to any unsteady interactive flow, e.g., incompressible or compressible boundary layers, internal flows, wakes, in two or three dimensions; and the singularity and its associated change in flow structure have numerous repercussions, which are discussed, physically and theoretically, concerning boundary-layer transition in particular.
