Der Begriff Ethik des Neuen Testaments bezeichnet nicht im philosophischen Sinn ein ethisches System als abstrahierende Reflexion ber Sittlichkeit, sondern den sachbezogenen, also nicht nur begrifflichen Zusam-menhang von ethischen uerungen und Vorstellungen, wie dieser aus den Schriften des Neuen Testaments zu erheben ist. Ethik des Neuen Testaments ist demnach eine systematisierende Darstellung, welche die situations-gebundenen ethischen Aussagen des Neuen Testaments zur Grundlage hat und an diese (als an die Ethik des N.T. im engeren Sinn) gewiesen bleibt.

Unsere Überlegungen gehen von der Voraussetzung aus, daß vor der Untersuchung der Diachronie eines Textes, vor dem Versuch also einen Text aus seinem geschichtlichen Werden zu verstehen, eine Beschreibung des Textes in seiner Synchronie zu erfolgen hat. Diese Voraussetzung wurde eigentlich bei der Textbehandlung immer schon gemacht, wenigstens da, wo man einen eher philologischen, der konkreten sprachlichen Gestalt des Textes zugewandten Schritt von einer den Bezug des Textes zur Geschichte im weitesten Sinn untersuchenden Perspektive unterschied. Dennoch hat es Sinn, diese Voraussetzung ausdrücklich zu formulieren, weil die Sprach-und Literaturwissenschaft heute mittels eines Stratifikationsmodells die verschiedenen Ebenen eines sprachlichen Gebildes deutlicher unterscheidet, und so einer synchronen Beschreibung eines Textes einen genaueren und vor allem geordneteren und nachprüfbaren Weg weist, als ihn die ältere Forschung ging. Weil sie häufig, von heute aus gesehen vorschnell von der Inhaltsebene eines Textes ausging, kam sie zu Textgliederungen, innerhalb derer die einzelnen Elemente in Spannung zueinander standen, und wertete diese Spannungen, in die Diachronie übergehend, als Anzeichen literar-kritischer Einschnitte bzw. traditionsgeschichtlicher Verwerfungen, und zwar auch in Fällen, wo eine eingehendere, die verschiedenen sprachlichen Ebenen berücksichtigende Beschreibung eines Textes in seiner Synchronie diese Spannungen als nichtexistent nachweisen kann.

Since it is generally agreed that the author of Luke–Acts was not an eye-witness of the life of Jesus or of the beginnings of the Christian church, the question of the sources he employed has always loomed large in critical studies of his work.2 In the case of the early chapters of Acts, Harnack may be taken as typical of the older approach, which was confident of being able to practise source-analysis and to assign material by chapter and verse to a ‘Jerusalem–Caesarea source’ and an ‘Antioch source’.3 Especially since the studies of Martin Dibelius, there has been a tendency on the part of many scholars to ascribe much more to the creative hand of Luke himself, above all in the speeches of Acts, which are held to have been freely composed by Luke in the manner of Greek and Roman historians.4

Since World War II a considerable number of New Testament scholars (many of them German) have come to the conclusion that Paul did not write II Thessalonians. Among these the names of Rudolf Bultmann, Günther Bornkamm, Willi Marxsen, and Helmut Koester come to mind. What is curious is that to date no single commentary has appeared in any major European language which interprets II Thessalonians as pseudonymous. C. Masson in the introduction to his commentary decides against Pauline authorship, but in the commentary itself interprets as though Paul were the author – an anomaly perhaps related to his view of pseudonymity. The forth-coming commentaries of Marxsen and Koester will therefore provide scholars with the first examples of exegesis of the letter as non-Pauline. Since the issue of authorship is evidently by no means settled, the present article examines the evidence for both positions and concludes with a discussion of pseudonymity in the ancient world.

It is now over twenty years since Alejandro Dez Macho announced his discovery of a complete text of the Palestinian Targum contained in the Codex Neofiti I of the Vatican Library. Even before the first volume of the editio princeps was published, the importance of Neofiti 1(N) and its marginal and interlinear glosses (Ngl) was apparent not only to specialists in the Aramaic language, Old Testament studies, and Jewish Literature of the Second Temple, Mishnaic and Talmudic times, but also to New Testament scholars. A particular feature of N which was bound to attract attention sooner or later is its frequent use of the formula Memra (utterance, word) of ahweh in the first chapter of Genesis in place of the Ἐlohim of the Massoretic Text, a feature encountered otherwise only in the Fragmentary Targum (FT). As we shall see presently, the exact significance of the term Memra was once a matter for keen scholarly debate, some asserting that it represented an entity separate from God, an intermediary between God and the created order, others roundly denying that it was any such thing, and regarding it only as a reverent means of avoiding pronunciation of the Holy and Ineffable Name. For reasons shortly to be described it was the latter opinion which finally prevailed and which is now generally accepted as established fact; but in the days before the scholarly debate on Memra was concluded it had been quite common for New Testament scholars to argue that, as an hypostasis and intermediary between God and the world, Memra had formed either the single antecedent, or one of the antecedents, to the Logos of the prologue of St John's Gospel. The presence of Memra in the text of N to Gen. i, and its frequent appearance in the Ngl, has led to renewed scholarly interest in the relationship of Memra to St John's Logos, so much so that A. Dez Macho, McNamara, and Domingo Muoz are all prepared to consider Memra a key concept in any discussion of St John's prologue. With the results of previous scholarship in mind, and in the light of new evidence, it would appear that the time is now right for a critical evaluation of these recent claims.

The reasonably clear picture of the Pharisees at the time of Jesus which we thought we had is now looking decidedly unclear. J. Bowker's work questions whether the Pharisees were the predecessors of the Rabbis, and J. Neusner's massive researches have shown how precarious are statements about the Pharisees before A.d. 70 when once critical techniques long used in Gospel criticism are employed on Rabbinic sources. It therefore seems appropriate to examine afresh the NT picture of the Pharisees, and in practice this means the Gospel picture, for elsewhere they are named once only, in Phil. iii. 5. I shall hope to show that this picture is strange and by no means uniform. We may conveniently attack the problem through Luke-Acts, partly because of the time-span involved, and partly because of the often noticed fact that Luke is rather less hostile to the Pharisees than the other evangelists are.

II Cor. ii. 9, 12 betont Paulus den Korinthern gegenüber, daß er von ihnen bisher keine finanzielle Unterstützung angenommen habe und dieses Verhalten beizubehalten gedenke. Dies ist eine merkwürdige Absicht, zumal er doch sonst durchaus bereit war, Unterstützung anzunehmen, ja sic geradezu erwartete (vgl. Phil. 4. 10 if.). Der Frage nach dem Verhalten des Paulus bezüglich der Annahme bzw. Ablehnung von Unterstützung durch seine Gemeinden soil im folgenden nachgegangen werden.

Das im vergangenen Jahr verstorbene Mitglied unserer Gesellschaft, der verehrte holländische Kollege Willem Cornelis van Unnik – mit meinem Lehrer Gerhard Delling in Halle verbunden durch das gemeinsame Projekt des Corpus Hellenisticum Novi Testamenti – hat es bei einer Gastvorlesung in Halle am 17. 11. 1966 als eine wichtige Aufgabe der Exegese beschrieben, ‘daß wir die Botschaft mit den Ohren eines Menschen des I. Jahrhunderts hören’ und dabei ‘dem Widerstand, den die christliche Predigt erregte, auf die Spur… kommen’. Man kann auch sagen, es gehe darum, das von Paulus gegebene Stichwort von der μωρία der Kreuzesbotschaft in den Ohren der ‘Heiden’ (I. Kor. 1. 23) mit dem seiner Zeit entsprechenden, also ‘synchronen’ Inhalt zu füllen. Wir dürfen den Prozeß der Ausbreitung des Evangeliums nicht ausschließlich von der Seite der Verkündigung und der Verkündigenden und ihrer Voraussetzungen her sehen, sondern müssen auch die andere Seite, die der Empfänger, in Betracht ziehen, etwa im Sinne der Fragestellung, die Wayne A. Meeks seinen soziologischen Erwägungen über die paulinischen Gemeinden zugrundelegt: ‘What was it like to become and to be an ordinary Christian in the first century?’ – wobei wir uns sofort dessen bewußt sein müssen, daß ‘this simplest of questions receives only vague and stammering replies’.

Les recherches ont été nombreuses, depuis le début de ce siècle, sur l'arrière-plan sémitique du Pater. La plupart des critiques se sont orientés vers un original araméen, dont ils ont cherché à retrouver la littéralité derrière les deux recensions de la ‘Prière du Seigneur’ qu'ont transmises Matthieu (Mt. 6. 9–13) et Luc (Lc. ii. 2–4). On peut citer en ce sens les chefs de file du mouvement: G. Dalman, C. F. Burney, M. Black, J. Jeremias.1 Mais ils ont eu des contradicteurs, surtout depuis que les textes de Qumrân ont introduit un fait nouveau dans l'enquête sur les langues parlées en Palestine au temps de Jésus. L'hypothèse d'un original hébraïque a notamment été soutenue par J. Carmignac, dont les Recherches sur le ‘Notre Père’ sont une somme rarement égalée.2 Les deux exposés de G. Dalman et de J. Carmignac sont comparables, en quelque sorte, pour l'érudition qu'ils déploient en faveur de leurs thèses respectives: celle d'un original araméen chez Dalman, celle d'un original hébraïque chez Carmignac. Naturellement, des deux cotés, les arguments d'ordre général sur la langue de Jésus et la langue de la prière dans le Judéo-christianisme primitif occupent une large place pour fonder la thèse choisie. Je les laisserai ici de côté, car leur examen m'entraînerait trop loin. J'admets provisoirement comme possible l'existence d'une annonce de l'Évangile et d'une prière chrétienne en araméen et en hébreu. Pour opérer un choix entre les deux possibilités dans le cas du Pater, il faut en effet combiner l'étude critique des sémitismes qui s'y rencontrent et celle du cadre culturel dans lequel la prédication évangélique fut effectuée. Je m'en tiens pour l'instant au premier point seul.

Daß basileia tou theou ‘der beherrschende Begriff der Verkündigung Jesu’ ist, darin sind sich die Neutestamentler einig. Einig auch darin, daß der Ausdruck nicht ein ‘Reich’ oder beherrschtes Gebiet meine, sondern vielmehr ‘Königsherrschaft’ als Abstraktum im Sinne von unbeschränkter herrscherlicher Machtausübung, ‘weder ein räumlicher noch ein statischer, vielmehr ein dynamischer Begriff’. Strittig bleibt das Maß von Gegenwärtigkeit einerseits, Zukünftigkeit andererseits, das Jesus mit der göttlichen basileia verbindet; eine Strittigkeit, die weitreichende Folgen für die Theologie der Gegenwart überhaupt hat, hangt doch für viele Theologen an der Klärung ebensosehr die Bestimmung der Rolle der Kirche in Zeit und Heilsgeschichte wie die Begründung für Prinzipien der Staatsethik und vieles andere.

Zu den Reliquien der altkirchlichen Literatur, die bis heute der Forschung Rätsel aufgeben, gehört das knappe Papyrusstück P.Oxy. 1. 5, dessen erste Edition B. P. Grenfell und A. S. Hunt zu verdanken ist:

Eine der drngendsten Aufgaben des Urchristentums bestand darin, dem Leiden und gewaltsamen Tode Jesu von Gott her einen Sinn abzugewinnen. Da Jesus, der Sohn Gottes und Messias, leiden mute, konnte dem Willen Gottes nicht zuwiderlaufen, soundern mute im Wort der Schrift des Alten Testaments bereits verankert sein. So wurden im Laufe der Zeit nicht nur Gesetz und Propheten (so etwa das vierte Gottesknechtslied Jes lii. 13 liii. 12), sondern auch die Psalmen dazu herangezogen, das Leiden des gerechten Gottesknechtes Jesus als von Gott gewollt verstndlich zu machen (vgl. Lk. xxiv. 27 mit xxiv. 44, wo die Psalmen ausdrcklich neben Gesetz und Propheten genannt werden). Eine besondere Bedeutung fiel dabei schon frh, d. h. schon im markinischen, wenn nicht vormarkinischen Passionsbericht, den Psalmen lxix (lxviii) und xxii (xxi) fr die theologische Deutung des Leidens Jesu zu. Doch gab es daneben auch andere Psalmen, in denen die Urkirche bereits prophetisch das Wort des leidenden Jesus vernahm. Zu ihnen zhlt Ps xlii (xli): Wie der Hirsch drstet nach Wasserquellen, zu dem nach der Auskunft der Alttestamentler Ps xliii (xlii) ursprnglich mit dazugehrte. Zusammen ergeben beide Psalmen drei Strophen von je sechs bzw. fnf Versen, die jeweils durch einen gleichlautenden Kehrvers abgeschlossen werden, dessen Anfang Eingang in die markinische Getsemaniperikope gefunden hat: ἵ , ( xli. 6, 12; xlii. 5) ἐ ἡ (Mk xiv. 34).

Ce mot, quoique trs utilis en linguistique, n'a pas encore reu dans ce domaine les conditions d'une dfinition precise. Dcrire suppose en effet deux donnes prliminaires: d'une part, la reconnaissance de l'objet dcrire comme une unit; d'autre part, a l'intrieur de cette unit, l'existence d'une autre unit, beaucoup plus petite, mais qui, associe un certain nombre de fois a elle-meme, compose la grande unit. La premiere unit, c'est Ia macrostructure; la seconde unit, c'est la microstructure. Dcrire, c'est toujours dcrire une macrostructure; la description d'une macrostructure consiste a partir de la microstructure pour retrouver la macrostructure.

Dans la conclusion de son ouvrage sur ‘La structure littéraire de l'épître aux Hébreux’, A. Vanhoye constate combien ‘l'étude de la structure s'est avérée…utile pour l'éxégèse de l'Epître’ et qu' ‘elle doit normalement contribuer…à la mise en valeur des richesses contenues dans le texte’ (p. 259). C'est en partageant ces convictions que nous voudrions répondre à une autre de ses constatations: ‘Tel ou tel détail de notre exposé demanderait un examen plus approfondi’ (ibid.). Il nous semble en effet que tel est le cas pour la parénèse qui est au centre de la première partie: ii. 1–4. Re-prendre l'étude de la structure littéraire de ces quatre versets ne saurait évidemment prétendre à plus qu'à préciser quelques ‘details’. Mais l'on sait assez maintenant comme tout et parties, ensemble et détails se tiennent dans cette épître. Et à notre tour, nous espérons que malgré ‘la minutie de certaines analyses’ le lecteur une fois encore ‘ne regrettera pas son effort’ (ibid.).

Il convient dés l'abord de dissiper tout malentendu. Notre discours ne veut être ni apologétique ni ésotérique. Il pourrait tout au plus être qualifié de pédagogique, mais son but principal est de nous inviter à un effort de reflexion. Notre recherche, dans le cadre proposé, ne peut être que limitée.

I Corinthians xiv. 20–25 has long posed several cruces interpretationis for commentators. The basic problems concern the relationship of the assertions made about tongues and prophecy in υ. 22 to the quotation of Isa. xxviii. 11–12 in υ. 21 and to the illustrations concerning tongues and prophecy in υυ. 23–5. As to the quotation, J. Ruef remarks that most commentators admit to the difficulty of seeing how it substantiates Paul's conclusion that tongues are meant as a sign for the unbeliever. Concerning the illustrations, both J. Héring and J. P. M. Sweet note that in the light of the assertions we would expect them to be the reverse of what they are. While tongues are asserted to be meant as a sign for unbelievers and prophecy for believers, the illustrations depict the negative effect of tongues upon unbelievers and the positive effect of prophecy not on believers but upon unbelievers. The second assertion (υ. 22b) in particular contradicts the second illustration (υυ. 24–5) in that it clearly states that ‘prophecy is meant as a sign not for unbelievers but for believers’. This is so if σημεĩον is taken in a positive sense. If, on the other hand, it is taken in a negative sense, the logical relation of this second illustration to the second assertion becomes ambiguous.

Ceux qui pratiquent les méthodes éprouvées de l'exégèse et ceux qui appliquent l'analyse structurale au Nouveau Testament ne peuvent plus s'ignorer. Ils travaillent sur les mêmes textes et ils s'intéressent à leur sens. Mais ils le font de points de vue différents. Le regard de la sémiotique structurale n'a rien d'exclusif et ne conteste pas la légitimité ni la nécessité du regard de la critique littéraire et historique et de l'herméneutique. Mais il a sa manière d'envisager le problème de la signification. Partout où il y a du sens, il cherche comment il se produit: comment, c'est-à-dire par quel dispositif interne, par quel réseau immanent de relations entrequelséléments. Cet objet de recherche distingue l'analyse sémiotique structurale de toute autre manière d'interroger les textes. Il devrait empêcher d'en faire une anti-exégèse, tout autant que de l'utiliser comme une servante de l'exégèse.

One of the thorniest questions in New Testament scholarship is the date of the composition of John's Apocalypse. Majority opinion now assigns that exotic book to the last decade of the first century A.D., ὸ , as Irenaeus says. But there are numerous problems with this date, and it is the contention of this study that the most natural date, the date indicated by the book itself and confirmed by outside sources, especially by the Roman historians of the early second century Tacitus, Suetonius and Plutarch is the period immediately following Nero's death in June of 68, that calamitous time known as the Year of the Four Emperors.
