Let denote the class of finite-dimensional Lie algebras L (over a fixed, but arbitrary, field F) all of whose maximal subalgebras have codimension 1 in L. In (2) Barnes proved that the solvable algebras in are precisely the supersolvable ones. The purpose of this paper is to extend this result and to give a characterisation of all of the algebras in . Throughout we shall place no restrictions on the underlying field of the Lie algebra.

In [2], R. Arthan and S. Bullett pose the problem of representing generators of the complex bordism ring MU* by manifolds which are totally normally split; i.e. whose stable normal bundles are split into a sum of complex line bundles. This has recently been solved by Ochanine and Schwartz [8] who use a mixture of J-theory and surgery theory to establish several results, including the following.

In a recent paper [2], D. Colton has given a new proof for the strong maximum principle with regard to the heat equation ut = Δu. His proof depends on the analyticity (in x) of solutions. For this reason it does not carry over to the equation

or to more general equations. But in order to tread mildly nonlinear equations such asut = Δu + f(u) which are important in many applications, it is essential to have the strong maximum principle at least for equation (*). It should also be said that this proof uses nontrivial facts about the heat equation.

It is easy to see (cf. Theorem 1 below) that the centrality of all the nilpotent elements of a given associative ring implies the centrality of every idempotent element; and (Theorem 7) these two properties are in fact equivalent in any regular ring. We establish in this note various conditions, some necessary and some sufficient, for the centrality of nilpotent or idempotent elements in the wider class of π-regular rings (in Theorems 1, 2, 3 and 4 the rings in question are not even required to be π-regular).

After preliminary results and definitions in Section 1, we show in Section 2 that any finite regular semigroup is saturated, in the sense of Howie and Isbell [8] (that is, the dominion of a finite regular semigroup U in a strictly containing semigroup S is never S). This is equivalent of course to showing that in the category of semigroups any epi from a finite regular semigroup is in fact onto. Note for inverse semigroups the stronger result, that any inverse semigroup is absolutely closed [11, Theorem VII. 2.14] or [8, Theorem 2.3]. Further, any inverse semigroup is in fact an amalgamation base in the class of semigroups [10], in the sense of [5]. These stronger results are known to be false for finite regular semigroups [8, Theorem 2.9] and [5, Theorem 25]. Whether or not every regular semigroup is saturated is an open problem.

Using results from Ramanujan's lost notebook, Zudilin recently gave an insightful proof of a radial limit result of Folsom et al. for mock theta functions. Here we see that Mortenson's previous work on the dual nature of Appell–Lerch sums and partial theta functions and on constructing bilateral q-series with mixed mock modular behaviour is well suited for such radial limits. We present five more radial limit results, which follow from mixed mock modular bilateral q-hypergeometric series. We also obtain the mixed mock modular bilateral series for a universal mock theta function of Gordon and McIntosh. The later bilateral series can be used to compute radial limits for many classical second-, sixth-, eighth- and tenth-order mock theta functions.

We show that spaces of Colombeau generalized functions with smooth parameter dependence are isomorphic to those with continuous parametrization. Based on this result we initiate a systematic study of algebraic properties of the ring of generalized numbers in this unified setting. In particular, we investigate the ring and order structure of and establish some properties of its ideals.

A non-commutative multivariable analogue of Parrott’s generalization of the Sz.-Nagy–Foia\c{s} commutant lifting theorem is obtained. This yields Tomita-type commutant results and interpolation theorems (e.g. Sarason, Nevanlinna–Pick, Carathéodory) for $F_n^\infty\,\bar{\otimes}\,\M$, the weakly-closed algebra generated by the spatial tensor product of the non-commutative analytic Toeplitz algebra $F_n^\infty$ and an arbitrary von Neumann algebra $\M$. In particular, we obtain interpolation theorems for bounded analytic functions from the open unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$ into a von Neumann algebra.

A variant of the non-commutative Poisson transform is used to extend the von Neumann inequality to tensor algebras, and to provide a generalization of the functional calculus for contractive sequences of operators on Hilbert spaces. Commutative versions of these results are also considered.

Finite groups which are products of pairwise totally permutable subgroups are studied in this paper. The -residual, -projectors and -normalizers in such groups are obtained from the corresponding subgroups of the factor subgroups under suitable hypotheses.

This paper is a sequel to previous papers (1, 2, 3) on the solution of axisymmetric potential problems for circular disks and spherical caps by means of integral equations and applies the methods developed in these papers to the electrostatic potential problem for a perfectly conducting thin spherical cap or circular disk between two infinite earthed conducting planes.

Throughout this paper A denotes an operator function, holomorphic on a deletedneighborhood of a complex number λo, with values in the space ℒ(X,Y) of boundedlinear operators between two complex Banach spaces X and Y. In his survey article(7), I. C. Gohberg has defined for such an arbitrary operator function A the algebraic multiplicity RM(A;λo) and the reduced algebraic multiplicity RM(A;λo) of A at λo. In earlier papers (e.g., (8, 16)) these notions have been defined and studied for morerestricted classes of operator functions. In (8) Gohberg and Sigal treated the case when A is finite-meromorphic at λo, A(λ) is bijective for λ in some deleted neighbor-hood of λo and the constant term A0 in the Laurent expansion of A at λo is aFredholm operator. In studying the cohomology of the symmetric groups and its applications in topology one is led to certain questions concerning the representation rings of special subgroups of . In this note we calculate the Chern classes of the regular representation of (Z/p)n where p is a fixed odd prime in terms of certain modular invariants first described by L. E. Dickson in 1911. In a later paper [9] we apply these results to study the odd primary torsion in the PL cobordism ring. Some indications of this application are given in Sections 10–12 where we apply the result above to obtain information about the cohomology of . After circulation of this note in preprint form we learned that H. Mui [10], has also proved Theorem 6.2.

The result obtained by Lars Gårding, who uses the Cayley operator upon a symmetric matrix, is of considerable interest. The operator Ω = |∂/∂xij|, which is obtained on replacing the n2 elements of a determinant |xij by their corresponding differential operators and forming the corresponding n-rowed determinant, is fundamental in the classical invariant theory. After the initial discovery in 1845 by Cayley further progress was made forty years later by Capelli who considered the minors and linear combinations (polarized forms) of minors of the same order belonging to the whole determinant Ω: but in all this investigation the n2 elements xij were regarded as independent variables. The apparently special case, undertaken by Gårding when xij = xji and the matrix [xij] is symmetric, is essentially a new departure: and it is significant to have learnt from Professor A. C. Aitken in March this year 1946, that he too was finding the symmetrical matrix operator [∂/∂xij] of importance and has already written on the matter.

Semiclassical limits of generic multi-parameter quantized coordinate rings A=q(kn) of affine spaces are constructed and related to A, for k an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and q a multiplicatively antisymmetric matrix whose entries generate a torsion-free subgroup of k×. A semiclassical limit of A is a Poisson algebra structure on the corresponding classical coordinate ring R=(kn), and results of Oh, Park, Shin and the authors are used to construct homeomorphisms from the Poisson-prime and Poisson-primitive spectra of R onto the prime and primitive spectra of~A. The Poisson-primitive spectrum of R is then identified with the space of symplectic cores in kn in the sense of Brown and Gordon, and an example is presented (over ℂ) for which the Poisson-primitive spectrum of R is not homeomorphic to the space of symplectic leaves in kn. Finally, these results are extended from quantum affine spaces to quantum affine toric varieties.
