The homogenisation of a linearly viscoelastic composite material is performed without any periodicity assumptions and with no restrictions on the initial data. A term of fading memory is evidenced in the expression of the homogenised stress tensor.

In this paper, the existence of at least three non-negative solutions to non-local boundary-value problems for second-order differential equations with deviating arguments α and ϛ is investigated. Sufficient conditions, which guarantee the existence of positive solutions, are obtained using the Avery–Peterson theorem. We discuss our problem for both advanced and delayed arguments. An example is added to illustrate the results.

The Schrödinger operator on the half-line with periodic background potential perturbed by a certain potential of Wigner—von Neumann type is considered. The asymptotics of generalized eigenvectors for λ ϵ ℂ+ and on the absolutely continuous spectrum is established. The Weyl—Titchmarsh-type formula for this operator is proven.

In this paper, we study the problem of the existence of solutions for a class of fractional semilinear evolution inclusions with non-convex right-hand side. We mainly focus on the existence of the extreme solution and the relationship of the solution sets between the original problem and the convexified problem. An example is provided to illustrate the application of the obtained theory.

In this paper, we show that the Hofer-Zehnder symplectic capacity of a two-dimensional manifold is same as the area of the manifold. Using this fact, we also get a result on the symplectic capacity of the cotangent bundle of the torus with its canonical symplectic form.

We deal with the optimal control of systems driven by differential inclusions with anti-periodic conditions in Banach spaces. The operators in the differential inclusions, describing the control system, all depend on control variables. By a solution of the control system we mean a ‘trajectory-control’ pair. We first prove that, for fixed control variables, the set of solutions is non-empty for the corresponding differential inclusion with anti-periodic conditions. We then show the functional-topological properties of the set of solutions. Finally, we investigate the existence of solutions to the optimal control problem. These abstract results can be used to study optimal control systems of evolutionary hemi-variational inequalities.

The paper deals with a multiple species Lotka–Volterra model with infinite distributed delays and feedback controls, for which we assume a weak form of diagonal dominance of the instantaneous negative intra-specific terms over the infinite delay effect in both the population variables and controls. General sufficient conditions for the existence and attractivity of a saturated equilibrium are established. When the saturated equilibrium is on the boundary of , sharper criteria for the extinction of all or part of the populations are given. While the literature usually treats the case of competitive systems only, here no restrictions on the signs of the intra- and inter-specific delayed terms are imposed. Moreover, our technique does not require the construction of Lyapunov functionals.

In this work, we study an elliptic problem involving an operator of mixed order with both local and nonlocal aspects, and in either the presence or the absence of a singular nonlinearity. We investigate existence or nonexistence properties, power- and exponential-type Sobolev regularity results, and the boundary behaviour of the weak solution, in the light of the interplay between the summability of the datum and the power exponent in singular nonlinearities.

An initial boundary value problem of Riemann type is solved for the nonlinear pseudoparabolic equation with two space variables

The complex function H is measurable on ℂ ×I × ℂ5, with I being an interval of the real line ℝ, Lipschitz continuous with respect to the last five variables, with the Lipschitz constant for the last variable being strictly less than one (ellipticity condition). No smallness assumption is needed in the argument.

In answer to two questions raised by W. N. Everitt, we show that, given p > l and any countably infinite set of isolated points on the positive λ-axis, there is a q(x) in Lp(0, ∞) for which the set of points constitutes the point-continuous spectrum associated with the equation y”(x) + {λ − q(x)}y(x) = 0 (0≦x<∞) and some homogeneous boundary condition at x = 0.

The aim of the paper is to study the asymptotic behaviour of the solution of a quasilinear elliptic equation of the form with a high-contrast discontinuous coefficient aε(x), where ε is the parameter characterizing the scale of the microstucture. The coefficient aε(x) is assumed to degenerate everywhere in the domain Ω except in a thin connected microstructure of asymptotically small measure. It is shown that the asymptotical behaviour of the solution uε as ε → 0 is described by a homogenized quasilinear equation with the coefficients calculated by local energetic characteristics of the domain Ω.

The roots of the equation zez = a are of importance in several theories. Various authors have studied certain of their properties over more than a century. Here we solve the equation, in the sense that we define the sequence {Zn} of roots and, except for a small, finite number of values of n, find a rapidly convergent series for Zn. The terms in this series are alternately real and purely imaginary and so the series is very convenient for calculation. For the few remaining roots, we give practicable methods of numerical calculation and supply an auxiliary table.

We deal with the large-time behaviour of scalar hyperbolic conservation laws with source terms

which are often called hyperbolic balance laws. Fan and Hale have proved existence of a global attractor for this equation with x ∈ S1. consists of spatially homogeneous equilibria, a large number of rotating waves and of heteroclinic orbits between these objects. In this paper, we solve the connection problem and show which equilibria and rotating waves are connected by a heteroclinic orbit. Apart from existence results, our approach via generalized characteristics also gives geometric information about the heteroclinic solutions, e.g. about the shock curves and their strength.

In a certain factor analysis model sampling formulae for maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters are found by inverting an augmented information matrix. The formulae were derived previously by other methods; but the techniques here employed may be of some general interest and applicable to other problems.

We make some remarks about rank-one convex and polyconvex functions on the set of all real n × n matrices that vanish on the subset Kn consisting of all conformal matrices and grow like a power function at infinity. We prove that every non-negative rank-one convex function that vanishes on Kn and grows below a power of degree n/2 must vanish identically. In odd dimensions n ≧ 3, we prove that every non-negative polyconvex function that vanishes on Kn must vanish identically if it grows below a power of degree n; while in even dimensions, such polyconvex functions can exist that also grow like a power of half-dimension degree.

For a system of semilinear elliptic partial differential equations with a small parameter, denned on a bounded multi-dimensional smooth domain, we show the existence of solutions with internal layers. The high-dimensionality of the domain gives rise to quite interesting an outlook in the analysis, dramatically different from that in one-dimensional settings. Our analysis indicates, in a certain situation, an occurrence of an infinite series of bifurcation phenomena accumulating as the small parameter goes to zero. We also present a related free boundary problem with a possible approach to its resolution.

We investigate various analytical and numerical techniques for the coupling of nonlinear hyperbolic systems and, in particular, we introduce an augmented formulation that allows for the modelling of the dynamics of interfaces between fluid flows. The main technical difficulty to be overcome lies in the possible resonance effect when wave speeds coincide and global hyperbolicity is lost. As a consequence, non-uniqueness of weak solutions is observed for the initial-value problem, and these solutions need to be supplemented with further admissibility conditions. This paper is devoted to investigating these issues in the setting of self-similar vanishing viscosity approximations to the Riemann problem for general hyperbolic systems. Following earlier works by Joseph, LeFloch and Tzavaras, we establish an existence theorem for the Riemann problem under fairly general structural assumptions on the nonlinear hyperbolic system and its regularization. Our main contribution consists of nonlinear wave interaction estimates for solutions that apply to resonant wave patterns.

In this paper, we analyse nonlocal equations in perforated domains. We consider nonlocal problems of the form $f(x) = \int \nolimits _{B} J(x-y) (u(y) - u(x)) {\rm d}y$ with x in a perforated domain $\Omega ^\epsilon \subset \Omega $. Here J is a nonsingular kernel. We think about $\Omega ^\epsilon $ as a fixed set Ω from where we have removed a subset that we call the holes. We deal both with the Neumann and Dirichlet conditions in the holes and assume a Dirichlet condition outside Ω. In the latter case we impose that u vanishes in the holes but integrate in the whole ℝN (B = ℝN) and in the former we just consider integrals in ℝN minus the holes ($B={\open R} ^N \setminus (\Omega \setminus \Omega ^\epsilon )$). Assuming weak convergence of the holes, specifically, under the assumption that the characteristic function of $\Omega ^\epsilon $ has a weak limit, $\chi _{\epsilon } \rightharpoonup {\cal X}$ weakly* in L∞(Ω), we analyse the limit as ε → 0 of the solutions to the nonlocal problems proving that there is a nonlocal limit problem. In the case in which the holes are periodically removed balls, we obtain that the critical radius is of the order of the size of the typical cell (that gives the period). In addition, in this periodic case, we also study the behaviour of these nonlocal problems when we rescale the kernel in order to approximate local PDE problems.

We link distinct concepts of geometric group theory and homotopy theory through underlying combinatorics. For a flag simplicial complex $K$, we specify a necessary and sufficient combinatorial condition for the commutator subgroup $RC_K'$ of a right-angled Coxeter group, viewed as the fundamental group of the real moment-angle complex $\mathcal {R}_K$, to be a one-relator group; and for the Pontryagin algebra $H_{*}(\Omega \mathcal {Z}_K)$ of the moment-angle complex to be a one-relator algebra. We also give a homological characterization of these properties. For $RC_K'$, it is given by a condition on the homology group $H_2(\mathcal {R}_K)$, whereas for $H_{*}(\Omega \mathcal {Z}_K)$ it is stated in terms of the bigrading of the homology groups of $\mathcal {Z}_K$.

We give an example of an indefinite weight Sturm-Liouville problem whose eigenfunctions form a Riesz basis under Dirichlet boundary conditions but not under anti-periodic boundary conditions.
