This paper describes sharp inequalities for the trace of Sobolev functions on the boundary of a bounded region Ω ⊂ ℝN. The inequalities bound (semi-)norms of the boundary trace by certain norms of the function, its gradient on the region and by two specific constants κρ and κΩ associated with the domain and a weight function, respectively. These inequalities are sharp in that there exist functions for which equality holds. Explicit inequalities in some special cases when the region is a ball, or the region between two balls, are evaluated.

A monotone iteration scheme for the solution of the initial boundary problems associated with a system of semilinear parabolic differential equations has been developed that does not require the nonlinearities to be quasimonotone. The class of equations to which this scheme applies includes physical models that describe combustion processes involving Arrhenius reaction terms.

We consider the formally self-adjoint 2mth-order elliptic differential operator in ℝn given by where lt is an operator of order t, and establish conditions under which the operator on is essentially self-adjoint in L2. A feature is that the major conditions have to be imposed only in an increasing sequence of annular regions surrounding the origin.

In 1900 von Ihering directed attention to the presence in certain Lamellibranchs of a special muscle lying in the posterior portion of the ventral mantle edge, close to the inner end of the inhalent siphon. This muscle consisted of two strands, each running diagonally from an origin on one valve to be inserted on the other, and crossing one another in the mid-ventral line so as to form a muscular apparatus with the appearance of a St Andrew's cross. He regarded this cruciform muscle as a specially differentiated group of fibres belonging to the pallial edge, acting as an accessory adductor muscle, a point of view in which he has been followed by all subsequent observers. To this von Ihering added the speculation that it had been by some similar process of specialisation of marginal pallial muscle fibres that the two other true adductor muscles of Lamellibranchs had originated.

We study equilibrium surfaces for an energy which is a linear combination of the area and a second term which measures the bending and twisting of the boundary. Specifically, the twisting energy is given by the twisting of the Darboux frame. This energy is a modification of the Euler–Plateau functional considered by Giomi and Mahadevan (2012, Proc. R. Soc. A 468, 1851–1864), and a natural special case of the Kirchhoff–Plateau energy considered by Biria and Fried (2014, Proc. R. Soc. A 470, 20140368; 2015, Int. J. Eng. Sci. 94, 86–102).

The present paper deals with non-real eigenvalues of singular indefinite Sturm–Liouville problems with limit-circle type endpoints. A priori bounds and the existence of non-real eigenvalues of the problem associated with a special separated boundary condition are obtained.

We study the balanced Allen–Cahn problem in a singular perturbation setting. We are interested in the behaviour of clusters of layers, i.e. a family of solutions uε(x) with an increasing number of layers as ε → 0. In particular, we give a characterization of cluster of layers with asymptotically positive length by means of a limit energy function and, conversely, for a given admissible pattern, i.e. for a given a limit energy function, we construct a family of solutions with the corresponding behaviour.

We prove that there exists a complete system of eigenvectors of the eigenvalue problem

for self-adjoint operators Tr and Vrs on separable Hilbert spaces Hr. It is assumed that

(i) the operators Tr have discrete spectrum;

(ii) the operators Vrs are bounded and commute for each r;

(iii) the operators Vrs have the definite sign factor property.

This theorem generalizes and improves a result of Cordes for two-parameter problems. The proof of the theorem depends on an approximation of the given eigenvalue problem by simpler problems, a technique which is related to Atkinson's proof of his expansion theorem.

We study the behaviour of solutions u = um of ut, + (um)x = 0 for t > 0, x ∊ R, u(x, 0) = u0(x), u0 ≧0, u0 ∊ L1(R) as m → ∞. This is a singular perturbation problem about m = ∞ if u0 > 1 on a set of positive measure. It is shown that the limit exists and satisfies the stationary equation

We study an initial-boundary value problem of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of a cylinder $\Pi =\{x=(x_{h}, x_3)\ \vert \vert x_{h} \vert \gt 1\}$, subject to the slip boundary condition. We construct unique global solutions for axisymmetric initial data $u_0\in L^{3}\cap L^{2}(\Pi )$ satisfying the decay condition of the swirl component $ru^{\theta }_{0}\in L^{\infty }(\Pi )$.

In this paper, we deal with the nonlinear Schrödinger–Poisson system

where λ > 0, V and Q are radial functions, which can be vanishing or coercive at ∞. With assumptions on f just in a neighbourhood of the origin, existence and multiplicity of non-trivial radial solutions are obtained via variational methods. In particular, if f is sublinear and odd near the origin, we obtain infinitely many solutions of (SP)λ for any λ < 0.

The harmonic mapping problem asks when there exists a harmonic homeomorphism between two given domains. It arises in the theory of minimal surfaces and in the calculus of variations, specifically in hyperelasticity theory. We investigate this problem for doubly connected domains in the plane, where it already presents a considerable challenge and leads to several interesting open questions.

We use programmes for the Todd-Coxeter coset enumeration algorithm and the modified Todd-Coxeter coset enumeration algorithm to investigate a class of generalised Fibonacci groups. In particular we use these techniques to discover a finite non-metacyclic Fibonacci group and to study its structure.

By applying a general large-deviation theorem of Kifer and Ruelle's Smale space technique, some large-deviation estimates are proved for Axiom A endomorphisms.

Following on the current observations made during 1908 in Loch Ness by the author and Mr W. Watson, a few observations were made in Loch Garry (Ness basin) during August and September 1909. Mr Macdonald, Fort Augustus, again assisted in the work. The Loch Ness observations showed that the currents in the loch were very confused, but certain general conclusions were drawn; e.g. (1) that when a lake has become stratified and the temperature discontinuity has appeared, the return current is nearly always found above the discontinuity; (2) that towards the windward end of the loch the return current may take place close to the surface; (3) that slow-currents are to be found below the discontinuity, and with the same direction as the surface current. All these conclusions are borne out by the Loch Garry observations, and some additional information has been obtained.

In this paper we study a problem in multilinear algebra which consists of finding small values of a certain quotientμ/α. Here μ is the minimal eigenvalue of a positive definite operator determinant Δ of the type introduced by F. V. Atkinson, and α is the minimum of the quadratic form corresponding to Δ with respect to all decomposable tensors of unit norm. Our results are connected with earlier results of P. Binding.

We study space-like hypersurfaces with functionally bounded mean curvature in Lorentzian warped products , where F is a (non-compact) complete Riemannian manifold whose universal covering is parabolic. In particular, we provide several rigidity results under appropriate mathematical and physical assumptions. As an application, several Calabi–Bernstein-type results are obtained which widely extend the previous ones in this setting.

We study the heat flow projected on a manifold M ⊂ L2(Ω). This manifold is defined by the condition that the integrals ∫Ωuk (t,x) dx, k = 1,…,N, are constants of motion. We show that solutions to this problem converge to a steady state as time tends to +∞. We use in an essential way a variant of the Łojasiewicz inequality.
