A method for counting the solutions for Penrose–Fife-type phase field equations is derived. The method used is similar to that developed recently for obtaining a precise count for the number of solutions for the Cahn–Hilliard equation [9], and is based on the derivation of an extended system of Picard–Fuchs equations as well as on estimates obtained in [11]. The Penrose–Fife-type phase field equations represent a thermodynamically consistent model for phase separation of a conserved order parameter (typically concentration) in binary systems in which latent heat effects are important in the phase separation process.

The solutions of the differential equation Lny + p(×)y = 0, where Ln is a disconjugate operator, are classified according to their behaviour as × →∞. The solution space is decomposed into disjoint sets. We study the dominance properties of the solutions which belong to different sets.

Let R be a commutative ring with unit. We endow the categories of filtered complexes and of bicomplexes of R-modules, with cofibrantly generated model structures, where the class of weak equivalences is given by those morphisms inducing a quasi-isomorphism at a certain fixed stage of the associated spectral sequence. For filtered complexes, we relate the different model structures obtained, when we vary the stage of the spectral sequence, using the functors shift and décalage.

By means of several counterexamples, the impossibility to obtain an analogue of the Chen lower estimation for the total mean curvature of any compact submanifold in Euclidean space for the case of compact space-like submanifolds in Lorentz–Minkowski spacetime is shown. However, a lower estimation for the total mean curvature of a four-dimensional compact space-like submanifold that factors through the light cone of six-dimensional Lorentz–Minkowski spacetime is proved by using a technique completely different from Chen's original one. Moreover, the equality characterizes the totally umbilical four-dimensional round spheres in Lorentz–Minkowski spacetime. Finally, three applications are given. Among them, an extrinsic upper bound for the first non-trivial eigenvalue of the Laplacian of the induced metric on a four-dimensional compact space-like submanifold that factors through the light cone is proved.

In this paper, we deal with the nonlinear Schrödinger–Poisson system

where λ > 0, V and Q are radial functions, which can be vanishing or coercive at ∞. With assumptions on f just in a neighbourhood of the origin, existence and multiplicity of non-trivial radial solutions are obtained via variational methods. In particular, if f is sublinear and odd near the origin, we obtain infinitely many solutions of (SP)λ for any λ < 0.

The convergence and blow-up results are established for the evolution of non-simple closed curves in an area-preserving curvature flow. It is shown that the global solution starting from a locally convex curve converges to an m-fold circle if the enclosed algebraic area A0 is positive, and evolves into a point if A0 = 0.

By applying a general large-deviation theorem of Kifer and Ruelle's Smale space technique, some large-deviation estimates are proved for Axiom A endomorphisms.

It is now well established experimentally that when an atom is caused to emit radiation of frequency v by collision with an electron, the amount U of the kinetic energy of the electron which is absorbed by the atom is given by the equation

where h denotes Planck's quantum of Action : an electron whose kinetic energy before the encounter is less than hv is incapable of stimulating the atom to emit the radiation, and is merely repelled from the atom without any loss of energy.

The lavas of the Scottish Carboniferous are predominantly basaltic. True andesites and rhyolites are conspicuous by their absence, whilst trachytes and allied rocks are present in quite subordinate quantity. This association of basalt and trachyte is in accordance with the fact that the basalts have a slight alkaline cast, which is evidenced by an alkali content greater than that of the average basalt, and by the occasional presence of nepheline and analcite amongst their constituents. The transition from basalts to more acid types is accomplished, not by way of the andesites, but through the mugearites, volcanic rocks with chemical affinities to the essexites. All transitions from the more felspathic types of basalts, the Jedburgh and Markle types, can be traced through mugearites to trachytes or allied rocks.

We consider a class of second-order systems , with q(t) ∊ℝn, for which the potential energy V: ℝn\S→ℝ admits a (possibly unbounded) singular set S ⊂ℝn and has a unique absolute maximum at 0 ∈ℝn. Under some conditions on S and V, we prove the existence of several solutions homoclinic to 0.

Let $H_n$, $n\ge3$, be the space of all $n\times n$ Hermitian matrices. Assume that a map $\phi:H_n\to H_n$ preserves commutativity in both directions (no linearity or bijectivity of $\phi$ is assumed). Then $\phi$ is a unitary similarity transformation composed with a locally polynomial map possibly composed by the transposition. The same result holds for injective continuous maps on $H_n$ preserving commutativity in one direction only. We give counter-examples showing that these two theorems cannot be improved or extended to the infinite-dimensional case.

The global entropy solution to the radial motion of isothermal self-gravitating gases is studied. A transformation of variables is applied. The global approximate solutions are constructed by a generalized shock-capturing scheme. The source terms include an integral which is non-local and is carefully estimated. The uniform estimate of the approximate solutions is obtained. The convergence of the approximate solutions is proved by the compensated compactness method. The global existence of weak entropy solution with large $L^{\infty}$ initial data is established. The solution allows a possible vacuum state.

We study the existence and multiplicity of solutions for a parametric equation driven by the p-Laplacian operator on unbounded intervals. Precisely, by using a recent local minimum theorem we prove the existence of a non-trivial non-negative solution to an equation on the real line, without assuming any asymptotic condition either at 0 or at ∞ on the nonlinear term. As a special case, we note the existence of a non-trivial solution for the problem when the nonlinear term is sublinear at 0. Moreover, under a suitable superlinear growth at ∞ on the nonlinearity we prove a multiplicity result for such a problem.

The body-temperature of the following fishes, crustaceans, and echinoderms has been examined and compared with the temperature of the water in which they live:—Cod-fish (Gadus morrhua), ling (Molva vulgaris), torsk (Brosmius brosme), coal-fish or saithe (Gadus virens), haddock (Gadus œgelfinus), flounder (Pleuronectes flesus), smelt (Osmerus eperlanus), dog-fish (Scyllium catulus), shore crab (Carcinus mœnas), edible crab (Cancer pagurus), lobster (Homarus vulgaris), sea-urchin (Echinus esculentus), and starfish (Asterias rubens). The minimum, maximum, and mean temperature difference for each species are given in the following table:—

The excess of temperature is most evident in the larger specimens. This is well shown in the case of the coal-fish, where in the adult it was 0°·7 C., and in the great majority (11 out of 12) of the young of the first year, 0°·0 C. The body-weight and the conditions under which the fish are captured probably form the most important factors in determining the temperature difference.

In 14 codfish, where the rectal, blood, and muscle temperatures were recorded in the same individual, it was found to be highest in the muscle and lowest in the rectum, the mean temperature difference being 0°·46 C. for the muscle, 0°·41 C for the blood, and 0°·36 C. for the rectum.

We show that silting modules are closely related with localizations of rings. More precisely, every partial silting module gives rise to a localization at a set of maps between countably generated projective modules and, conversely, every universal localization, in the sense of Cohn and Schofield, arises in this way. To establish these results, we further explore the finite-type classification of tilting classes and we use the morphism category to translate silting modules into tilting objects. In particular, we prove that silting modules are of finite type.

Using a norm inequality for singular integral operators in pairs of weighted Lebesgue spaces we are able to prove existence and uniqueness results for solutions of nonlinear RiemannHilbert problems with non-compact Lipschitz continuous restriction curves.

The morphological characters of mammalian sperm cells taken from the ductuli efferentes differ only slightly from the sperm derived from the vas deferens. However, it is known that spermatozoa from the caput epididymis, when kept in physiological salt solution, quickly become immotile, whereas those from the cauda epididymis retain their motility for a long time (Moore, 1928). During the slow passage through the epididymis the spermatozoa undergo a physiological process of maturation, which is said to occur under the influence of the epithelium of the epididymis and to result in a lesser susceptibility on the part of the spermatozoa to extraneous influences (Braus and Redenz, 1924; Redenz, 1926; and Lanz, 1929). Other authors maintain that this maturation of the spermatozoon is not conditioned by environmental influences (Young, 1931). In any case the spermatozoa achieve full functional ability only after they have reached the cauda epididymis and the vas deferens. These are the spermatozoa which enter the female genital tract at copulation, and thus it follows that spermatozoa for artificial insemination in the mouse must be taken from the vas deferens and cauda epididymis.
