Reliable mechanical weed control requires knowledge of the achievable levels of weed control and crop damage when using certain implements in specific conditions. Quantitative methods that use weed, crop, soil, and cultivator characteristics to predict weed control and crop damage need to be developed. To that end, the relative susceptibility of weeds and crop plants to mechanical weeding and the selective ability of cultivators need to be quantified separately. The method presented in this study uses measured plant anchorage forces to quantify crop and weed sensitivity to being uprooted by a weed harrow and predicts the relationship between weed and crop uprooting by mechanical weeding. Uprooting and anchorage force of young perennial ryegrass and garden cress plants were measured in laboratory harrowing experiments on sandy soil. A nonlinear equation was introduced to describe the relationship between weed uprooting and crop uprooting. The parameters representing the selective potential of the actual crop–weed condition (K pot) and the implement selective ability (K cult) did not depend on crop uprooting. The relationship between potential weed and crop uprooting that could theoretically be obtained by a perfectly selective implement (i.e., pulling each plant with equal force) was calculated from plant anchorage force distributions measured before harrowing. The observed uprooting percentages achieved by harrowing were lower than the potential uprooting percentages. With K cult accounting for imperfect weeder selective ability, prediction accuracy was satisfactory. Field validation is required to confirm whether this method improves comparison and prediction of weeding performance of different weeding implements in different crop–weed situations.

Fluazifop-butyl {(±) butyl 2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid}, haloxyfop-methyl {methyl-2-[4-[[3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid}, and sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)-butyl]-5-[2-ethylthio)propyl-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one}exhibited soil herbicidal activity to annual grass species in greenhouse and field experiments. Control of forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. ‘Rox Orange’] with all three herbicides was greater when seeds were planted at or near the soil surface than when planted 2, 4, or 6 cm deep. Imbibition of the herbicides by forage sorghum and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seeds did not reduce germination at concentrations of 10-3 M or lower, but forage sorghum seedling survival and vigor were reduced by herbicide concentrations as low as 10-7 M. Fluazifop-butyl, haloxyfop-methyl, and sethoxydim were more phytotoxic when applied to the root zone than the shoot zone. Haloxyfop-methyl exhibited the longest soil residual control in the field followed by fluazifop-butyl and sethoxydim. Haloxyfop-methyl and fluazifop-butyl controlled simulated shattercane [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. ♯3 SORVU] in soybeans with preemergence and early postemergence applications, whereas control from similar applications of sethoxydim was limited and variable.

A study was conducted to examine the effects of residence time and temperature on atrazine extractability and degradation in a sediment generated from Emporia sandy loam soil submerged under a water column. Sediments amended with 2.8 μg of atrazine were incubated at two temperatures (5 and 24 C), sampled at 0, 14, 28, 112, 168, 252, and 336 d, and then sequentially extracted once with 80 ml 0.01 M CaCl2 aqueous solution, three times with 25 ml of methanol/water mixture (4:1, v/v), and three times with 25 ml of methanol/water/formic acid (20:5:1, v/v pH 3.2) for a total of seven times. Extracts were analyzed for atrazine and metabolites using reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The rate of bound residue formation was greater at 24 than at 5 C. About 30 and 60% of the 14C was bound (nonextractable) to sediments at 5 and 24 C, respectively. Water was less effective in extracting 14C residues from sediments incubated at 24 C than at 5 C. Acidification of the methanol/water mixture with formic acid during the last extraction step improved the removal of hydroxyatrazine from sediment. Atrazine degraded primarily to hydroxyatrazine (HA) and to a lesser extent to deethylatrazine (DEA). Although no DEA was found, HA at 43 μg kg−1 of sediment was detected 112 d after treatment at 5 C, indicating that chemical degradation could occur at a low temperature if sediments are incubated for extended periods of time. At 24 C, HA was found within 28 d and reached the maximum level at day 252. The results suggested that HA is the major metabolite of atrazine in the sediment; a significant fraction of the residue was unavailable for extraction, and this unextractable portion increased with residence time.

Root buds of leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L. # EPHES) were found to be quiescent during most of the growing season due to correlative inhibition rather than innate dormancy. Excised root buds taken from plants that were fully flowering showed reduced elongation, indicating a period of innate dormancy. This innate dormancy could be eliminated by chilling plants for 8 days at 4 C. Root buds from plants showing late summer regrowth were no longer innately dormant. IAA (indole-3-acetic acid) and NAA (1-napthaleneacetic acid) completely inhibited the growth of excised leafy spurge root buds at concentrations of 10−3 and 10−5 M, respectively. A significant increase in root bud elongation was produced by 1 mM TIBA (2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid) applied to stem and root tissue. These data provide further evidence for the involvement of IAA in correlative control of root bud growth in leafy spurge.

An experiment was conducted at two locations in Georgia and one location in North Carolina during 1994 and 1995 to evaluate weed management systems utilizing pyrithiobac applied preemergence (PRE) in conventional-tillage bromoxynil-resistant cotton. Weed management systems evaluated included different combinations of pyrithiobac PRE, bromoxynil or bromoxynil plus MSMA applied early postemergence (EPOST), bromoxynil applied postemergence (POST), and cyanazine plus MSMA applied late postemergence-directed (LAYBY). Pyrithiobac PRE improved control of Florida beggarweed, pitted morningglory, prickly sida, sicklepod, and spurred anoda compared with systems that did not include pyrithiobac PRE. Averaged across locations, pyrithiobac PRE increased cotton lint yields 330 kg ha−1. Bromoxynil applied EPOST or POST increased weed control and cotton lint yield. Bromoxynil EPOST, POST, or EPOST plus POST did not control sicklepod. The addition of MSMA to bromoxynil EPOST improved sicklepod control. Two applications of bromoxynil controlled more pitted morningglory and sicklepod than one application. Control of all dicotyledonous weeds was increased by cyanazine plus MSMA LAYBY, and this treatment increased yields at all locations. Cotton was not injured by pyrithiobac PRE or by bromoxynil applied EPOST or POST, but temporary visual injury was observed with EPOST treatments of MSMA.

Greenhouse studies were initiated to determine the duration of time after herbicide treatment required to render johnsongrass physiologically noncompetitive. Nicosulfuron, imazapic, clethodim, and glyphosate were applied to rhizomatous johnsongrass at 35, 70, 140, and 840 g ai ha−1, respectively. Net carbon assimilation, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll meter readings, and maximum (dark adapted) efficiency of photosystem II were measured. Net carbon assimilation (A N) was assumed to be the best indicator of johnsongrass competitiveness. Johnsongrass was considered to be physiologically noncompetitive when A N declined below 50% of that of nontreated check. From these data, it was concluded that glyphosate rendered johnsongrass noncompetitive most readily, 4.3 d after treatment, whereas no differences were detected between nicosulfuron, imazapic, or clethodim throughout the experiment. Stomatal conductance (g s) was highly correlated to A N and was determined to be an adequate substitute for A N when determining johnsongrass competitiveness. It was concluded that chlorophyll meter readings and photosystem II efficiency were poor indicators of johnsongrass competitiveness.

The effects of several crop rotations and herbicide programs on populations of goosegrass, stinkgrass, large crabgrass, smooth crabgrass, fall panicum, and yellow nutsedge were investigated at two sites from 1991 to 1994. Crop rotations were continuous corn, continuous soybean, corn–soybean, and corn–tomato–soybean. Herbicide programs were the split-plots and included continuous use of acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibitor herbicides, continuous use of non–ALS-inhibitor herbicides, annual rotations between ALS- and non–ALS-inhibitor herbicides, combinations of ALS- and non–ALS-inhibitor herbicides in the same year, and no herbicide. Grass and yellow nutsedge densities generally were affected by an interaction between crop rotations and herbicide programs by 1994. Goosegrass densities in 1994 were highest from the continuous use of ALS-inhibitor herbicides in the corn–tomato–soybean rotation and were generally high in 1994 in the continuous corn and corn–tomato–soybean rotations. Stinkgrass densities were highest by 1994 where imazethapyr was applied alone for four consecutive years. Stinkgrass densities were also high where imazethapyr was applied in combination with butylate for 4 yr and at Site 2 (designated Northampton) where imazaquin plus nicosulfuron was applied for 4 yr. Herbicide programs did not produce shifts in large crabgrass densities, except that densities were highest where butylate plus atrazine was applied for 4 yr. Smooth crabgrass was present in significant densities at Site 1 (designated Accomac) only where imazaquin plus nicosulfuron was used for 4 yr or at Northampton from continuous ALS-inhibitor programs. Fall panicum densities were highest by 1994 where the combination of butylate plus atrazine was applied continuously for 4 yr. Yellow nutsedge control was lowest and densities were highest at Northampton where the combination of fomesafen plus fluazifop-P plus fenoxaprop was applied continuously for 4 yr. Yellow nutsedge densities by 1994 at Northampton were also high where these herbicides were applied with imazaquin for 4 yr or where these herbicides were applied in rotation with imazaquin plus nicosulfuron or butylate plus atrazine.

A system for controlling yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) in soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] which involved preplanting tillage, late planting, herbicides, and cultivation was evaluated in 1969 and 1970. In Illinois on a Drummer silty clay loam, S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate (EPTC) and S-ethyl diisobutylthiocarbamate (butylate), incorporated in the soil before planting, gave good and fair control of yellow nutsedge, respectively, but both injured soybeans initially. S-propyl dipropylthiocarbamate (vernolate), also incorporated before planting, controlled yellow nutsedge as well as EPTC did, and resulted in less injury to soybeans. Soybean yields were not reduced by any of the thiocarbamate treatments. Incorporation of 2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide (alachlor) or 2-chloro-N-isopropylacetanilide (propachlor), just before planting, controlled at least 90% of the yellow nutsedge in both years, whereas preemergence applications were only moderately successful and dependent on rainfall. In field microplots, alachlor and vernolate provided only fair control of yellow nutsedge when applied to the soil surface, but they both controlled 95% of the yellow nutsedge when incorporated 7.6 cm. In greenhouse studies on selective control of yellow nutsedge in soybeans, alachlor exhibited a wider margin of safety to soybeans than did vernolate.

The metabolism of the herbicide 14C-glufosinate (GA) was studied in excised shoots and leaves of 20 weed and nonweed species; GA was fed through the xylem. After 24 or 48 h of incubation, the plant material was examined for phytotoxic symptoms, analyzed by autoradiography, and extracted. The extract was cleaned up and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. GA and its metabolites were identified by cochromatography with authentic 14C-labelled reference compounds. 14C-GA was rapidly absorbed by the excised plant parts. Most of the radioactivity (91.3 to 99.7%) in the shoots and leaves was extractable. The main metabolite observed with all species was 3-(hydroxymethylphosphinyl)propionic acid (MPP); lower amounts of 2-hydroxy-4-(hydroxymethylphosphinyl)butanoic acid (MHB) were also found in 14 species. Metabolic rates of GA varied considerably ranging between 13.1 and 2,836.5 ng GA h−1 mg−1 protein. The species with the highest rates of metabolism of GA were Galium verum (2,836.5 ng GA h−1 mg−1 protein), Lythrum hyssopifolia (846.0 ng GA h−1 mg−1 protein), and Digitalis purpurea (494.8 ng GA h−1 mg−1 protein). The mean value across all species was 275.9 ng GA h−1 mg−1 protein.

Norflurazon [4-chloro-5-(methylamino)-2-(α,α,α-trifluoro-m-tolyl)-3(2H)-pyridazinone] decreased the total chlorophyll content and the chlorophyll a/b ratio of nine plant species. Grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.], wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L. ♯3 CASOB) were the most susceptible plants, and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) was the most tolerant. The soil properties most closely correlated with norflurazon activity were organic matter content and clay component, not clay content. A high treatment rate was necessary for effective control of plant growth in soil high in organic matter content and high in montmorillonite or vermiculite. Approximately twice as much norflurazon was required to reduce chlorophyll content 50% when applied to the soil preplant incorporated as was required when applied preemergence.

Prodiamine is a mitotic inhibiting herbicide regularly used to control annual bluegrass PRE. A population of annual bluegrass not controlled by prodiamine at 1,120 g a.i. ha−1 was identified on a golf course in Alcoa, TN, in 2012. A whole-plant hydroponics bioassay was used to screen this biotype for prodiamine resistance (PR) compared with a known susceptible population (SS). Multitiller (i.e., > 4 tillers) PR and SS annual bluegrass plants were established in hydroponic culture and exposed to 0, 0.001, 0.01, 0.10, 1.0, and 10.0 mM prodiamine. Exposure to prodiamine at 0.001 mM reduced root growth of the SS biotype to 26% of the nontreated check (i.e., 0 mM prodiamine) but had no effect on the PR biotype. When exposed to 10 mM prodiamine, root growth of the PR biotype was reduced to 24% of the nontreated check compared with 9% for the SS biotype. I 50 values for the PR and SS biotypes were 0.04 and 2.8 × 10−6 mM prodiamine, respectively. The PR biotype measured lower in plant height and leaf width than the SS population. In field trials, prodiamine at 560, 840, 1,120, and 1,400 g ha−1 only controlled the PR biotype 0 to 22%. PRE applications of the cellulose biosynthesis inhibitor indaziflam at 35, 52.5, and 70 g a.i. ha−1 controlled this PR biotype 70 to 97%. This marks the second instance of annual bluegrass developing resistance to prodiamine in Tennessee during the past 5 yr. Future research should evaluate indaziflam efficacy for control of other prodiamine-resistant biotypes of annual bluegrass as well as annual bluegrass biotypes resistant to herbicidal inhibitors of 5-enolpyruvylshikimic acid-3-phosphate synthase, acetolactate synthase, and photosystem II.

We conducted a greenhouse study to examine the effects of different habitat conditions and environmental resources on the growth rates of crimson fountaingrass, an invasive, alien, perennial grass in South Africa. To help understand the factors promoting the spread of this emergent alien grass, we investigated the effects of temperature regimes, nutrient and moisture addition, and soil type on seedling growth rates and biomass allocation. Our results suggest that crimson fountaingrass seedlings do not tolerate drought because they died within 1 mo without water. Additional nutrients and extra water increased seedling growth rates throughout the study period. Higher temperatures with extra moisture increased seedling growth rates and the development of belowground biomass throughout the study period. This study demonstrates the importance of available environmental resources and their interaction with some habitat conditions in promoting crimson fountaingrass growth. We suggest that soil moisture and nutrient availability are critical factors affecting successful establishment of crimson fountaingrass in arid environments. Managers should target seedlings for removal following precipitation and in areas of nutrient enrichment, such as near rivers and at road–river crossings.

Field plot experiments were conducted to examine the interactions between tall fescue grass (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), musk thistle (Carduus nutans L. = thoermeri Weinmann # CRUNU), and two thistle weevils Trichosirocalus horridus (Panzer) and Rhinocyllus conicus Froelich. Restriction of musk thistle growth was greatest when the weevils were allowed to feed on the musk thistles competing with tall fescue. Significant reductions were found in total musk thistle seeds per plant, root weight, flower buds per plant, stem dry weight, seeds per head, root crown diameter, stem height, rosette diameter, and head diameter. Seed weight and viability were not reduced. Of the three stress factors (tall fescue and the two Carduus thistle weevils), tall fescue had the greatest impact. When musk thistle seeds were planted in 1-yr-old tall fescue, germination was low. Seeds that germinated did not grow more than four Leaves and none of the thistles developed to the reproductive stage. A 1-year-old tall fescue stand effectively prevented musk thistle reproduction. Thus, tall fescue helped suppress musk thistle growth more quickly than the use of Carduus thistle weevils alone without competitive vegetation. Dry weight of tall fescue grass was lower in musk thistle-infested plots than in the thistle-free plots.

Twenty-eight commercial soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivars of maturity classes V through VIII were evaluated for differences in response to metribuzin [4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazin-5(4H)-one] 0.125 ppm w/w in hydroponic culture. Top dry weight (TDW) of treated ‘FFR 666’ soybeans equaled that of the cultivar check and five other cultivars were not significantly different (P = 5%). ‘Semmes' was most sensitive to the herbicide with TDW 40% of cultivar check. ‘Tracy’ and ‘Coker 156’ were not significantly different (P = 5%) from Semmes. The other cultivars tested were intermediate in response to metribuzin.

Greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine effects of watering frequency, drought stress, and a combination of watering frequency and glyphosate on growth of field bindweed. Watering daily, twice weekly, or weekly to field capacity affected field bindweed grown from seed differently than plants grown from root runner segments. Shoot and root dry matter of plants grown from seed increased when plants were watered frequently but dry matter allocated to root runners did not change when plants were watered less frequently. Plants grown from root runner segments increased their shoot and root runner dry matter when watered frequently, but root dry matter was not affected by watering frequency. Plants grown from seed had highest regrowth when watered weekly and plants grown from root runner segments had higher regrowth when watered daily. Drought reduced survival rate and dry matter of surviving plants. Frequency of watering and whether plants began from seeds or root runner segments influenced glyphosate action on field bindweed. No regrowth was observed 6 months after 1.5 kg ai/ha of glyphosate was applied to plants that had been grown for 8 weeks under three different watering frequencies.

The plant characteristics which makes ‘Hybelle’ cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.) relatively tolerant while ‘Rio Verde’ is susceptible to the toxic action of 2,4-dichlorophenyl-p-nitrophenyl ether (nitrofen) were investigated. No differences between ‘Hybelle’ and ‘Rio Verde’ were found in growth rates, light or dark germination, or stomata density. Little xylem or phloem translocation of nitrofen-14C occurred. Disruption and removal of the cuticle of ‘Hybelle’ increased its susceptibility to nitrofen while ‘Rio Verde’ with more than normal wax deposition was tolerant. Plants with less cuticle were more susceptible, regardless of cultivar. ‘Hybelle’ had more wax per unit surface than ‘Rio Verde’ and wax deposition increased with leaf age. Both cultivars were equally tolerant to nitrofen when 6 weeks old. ‘Rio Verde’ leaves absorbed nitrofen-14C twice as fast as ‘Hybelle’ leaves. The results show that the mechanism of intraspecific selectivity of cabbage to nitrofen is dependent on the amount of cuticular wax on the leaves at the time of nitrofen application.

To understand persistence strategies of meadow and western salsify, ecophysiological characteristics of their seed germination were studied. Anaerobiosis (immersion in deoxygenated water) induced secondary dormancy in seeds of both species. Dormancy could be induced in 86% of meadow salsify seeds and in 65% of western salsify seeds by a 1-d anaerobiosis treatment. The induced dormancy was gradually released during storage of air-dried secondary dormant meadow salsify seeds, and the rate of this release was influenced by storage temperature; 30 C was more effective than 10 or 20 C in releasing secondary dormancy. These results suggest that the two species may rely on induced dormancy as an option in their persistence strategy. The optimum temperature for germination of nondormant seeds of both species was 15 C. Maximum germination percentages for both species were established within 4 to 6 d of incubation at 15 C and within 14 to 28 d of incubation at 25 C. Nondormant seeds did not germinate below 10 or above 30 C. Stratification (at 5 C for 2 to 10 wk) stimulated germination of secondary dormant seeds of meadow salsify. This stratification requirement can be important in preventing germination of dormant salsify seeds in the fall, thereby avoiding high seedling mortality in the winter. Light (red and far-red) had no effect on germination of seeds in secondary dormancy. In a separate study, seeds of both species were planted in pots at depths of 2 to 14 cm and seedling emergence was observed. Maximum emergence occurred when seeds were buried 2 cm deep. Seeds planted 8 cm or deeper germinated but did not emerge.

Preemergence control of itchgrass in sugarcane with nonincorporated pendimethalin and prodiamine increased as rate for each herbicide increased from 2.2 to 3.4 kg ai ha-1. Itchgrass control at 3.4 kg ha-1 was similar for both herbicides, ranging from 78 to 94% (86% mean) for pendimethalin in six field experiments and 83 to 91% (86% mean) for prodiamine in three experiments. Incorporated trifluralin at 2.2 kg ha-1, the standard, gave 99% mean control of itchgrass. None of the nonincorporated treatments with pendimethalin or prodiamine consistently prevented a decrease in the sugarcane stalk population at harvest. Asulam applied postemergence at 3.7 kg ae ha-1 controlled itchgrass that survived the preemergence herbicides, and sugarcane stalk populations were maintained. Preemergence control of johnsongrass with nonincorporated treatments of pendimethalin or prodiamine at 2.8 kg ha-1, in a mixture with atrazine at 2.2 kg ai ha-1, ranged from 86 to 95% (89% mean) for pendimethalin and 80 to 95% (88% mean) for prodiamine. Metribuzin at 2.2 kg ha-1, the standard, gave 97% mean control of johnsongrass. Mixtures of pendimethalin with metribuzin or terbacil generally gave more effective control of johnsongrass than mixtures with atrazine. When used in conjunction with other herbicides, nonincorporated pendimethalin and prodiamine were effective alternatives to soil-incorporated treatments for weed control in sugarcane.

The effects of interference between soybeans and common cocklebur were investigated. Common cocklebur interference reduced soybean growth at each of four sample dates during the growing season. The area of interference surrounding individual common cocklebur plants within the soybean row fluctuated over time with respect to intensity and spatial distribution. Soybean growth was significantly reduced up to 10 cm away from individual cocklebur plants at 6 weeks after planting (WAP), 30 cm at 8 WAP, 20 to 30 cm at 10 WAP, and 40 cm at 12 WAP. The maximum possible distance of cocklebur influence, determined by regression analysis, also varied during the growing season. When areas of interference from adjacent cocklebur plants overlapped, the cumulative influence was found to be additive, especially late in the growing season. Soybean interference caused a 50 to 90% reduction in the size of common cocklebur plants grown within the soybean row compared to plants grown without interference. At harvest, soybean yield was reduced up to 40 to 50 cm within the row from individual cocklebur plants. The maximum distance of interference on one side of individual cocklebur plants was 75 cm. One cocklebur plant reduced soybean yield 16.0% within 1.5 m of soybean row as the result of full-season interference. Interference of common cocklebur plants spaced 60 cm apart within the row overlapped and caused an additive reduction in soybean seed yield. Across all cocklebur treatments, there was a consistent ratio of approximately 1 kg/ha loss in soybean seed yield for each 4 kg/ha of cocklebur herbage produced.

There is little evidence that herbicides from agronomic or industrial usage are reaching or accumulating in our water supplies in amounts to cause a pollution problem. Fish tolerance to weed killers varies with their size and species as well as with differences in the aquatic site. There may be variation to different forms of the active ingredient. Other components in a formulation may be more toxic than the herbicide itself. Therefore, the LD50 of different formulations should be determined. In addition, the manner and other circumstances involving application of a herbicide may change its toxicity to water inhabitants. Our current knowledge of the effects of herbicides on fish, plankton, and other water inhabitants indicate that harmful effects with our present herbicides, when such exist, are only temporary. Available evidence suggests there is no biological magnification problem with herbicides.
