Phase change materials (PCMs) are getting increasing interest due to their capacity to absorb, store and release heat energy. Their effectiveness is characterized by quantities of absorbed/released heat energy, expressed as enthalpy. Specifically, the larger is the enthalpy, the more efficient thermoregulation effect is achieved. With this in mind, PCMs can be used in the manufacture of thermally regulated clothing in order to minimize heat strain and simultaneously improve thermal comfort. Moreover, such materials also modify their infrared radiation emission during phase transition, thus they can be envisioned to exploit thermal shielding applications. The aim of the present research was to investigate the infrared emissivity of textiles composed by cotton yarns with dispersed PCMs. The organic microcapsules of phase change materials, having different binding to the fibre mechanisms, were padded onto the fabric surface by pad-dry-cure method. The thermal properties and stabilities were measured using differential scanning calorimetry, while infrared emissivity was characterized using infrared thermographic technique. The obtained experimental results show a dynamic tuning of IR emissivity during heating/cooling process which can be correlated to the type and properties (enthalpy of fusion) of the corresponding PCM.

This study seeks to understand the low temperature reactions of the salt phase that occur during the vitrification of Hanford Low Activity Waste (LAW). Salts (such as nitrates, sulfates, carbonates, halides, etc.) play a key role in these low temperature reactions as they sequentially melt, decompose, and volatilize during batch-to-glass conversion. To further understand these complex processes, simplified LAW melts containing oxyanion salts (sodium salts of carbonate, sulfate, and/or nitrate) and early melting glass formers (boric acid) have been evaluated using thermal analysis, infrared absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Results from this study indicate that the volatilization behavior of particular salts is influenced by the presence or absence of other salts. NaNO3 volatilization is decreased by the presence of Na2SO4. The addition of either Na2SO4 or NaNO3 to the system may enhance the volatilization of Na2CO3. In all cases, Na2SO4 was retained after melting and was often found to be in two different crystalline phases upon quenching.

Using palladium for hydrogen storage requires palladium (Pd) particles exhibiting specific parameters, including surface area, particle size, and particle shape, with increased interest in palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs). In order to routinely monitor the synthesis of these particles a spectroscopic method is being developed using infrared (IR), Raman, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. By monitoring the production of Pd NPs, the growth of the NPs can be controlled to ensure quality of the product to match the desired finished particle specifications. For the reaction presented, the conversion of the intermediate tetraamminepalladium(II) chloride (PTC) to diamminepalladium(II) chloride (PDC) can influence the Pd NPs properties. This study is first being developed in lab bench scale quantities to allow ultimate control of the Pd NPs.

In this study, biological hydroxyapatite (HAp) was synthesized from catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) bones. First, the as-received catfish bones were de-proteinized in open air, and then converted to HAp by a solid state heat treatment method at a temperature of 900 °C for a holding time of 2 h in a muffle furnace. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that HAp with high crystallinity of 99.9% was formed matching the structural properties of flouro-apatite with crystallite sizes of approximately 37.1 nm. The morphology of the HAp prepared showed irregularly shaped particles and revealed the appearance of open pores with a less agglomerated structure and a Ca/P ratio of about 1.58. The specific mechanical properties: hardness, compressive strength and fracture toughness of the catfish derived scaffolds were recorded as 480 MPa, 1.92 MPa, and 5.72 Mpa.m1/2, respectively. The fracture toughness of the HAp derived scaffolds suggests that the produced biomaterial is promising for biomedical applications. These findings are useful for the production and application of the HAp powders prepared from catfish bones, and further suggests a possible low-cost route for producing inexpensive ceramics using natural catfish bones.

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a primary sensor for autonomous vehicles to recognize surroundings. It detects near-infrared (NIR) light pulses, typically at 905nm, which is emitted and reflected by surrounding objects. Here, the fact of the matter is that conventional black or dark-tone cars with extremely low NIR reflection are hard to be detected by LiDAR and endanger the future highway. In this work, we propose to use platelet-shaped effect pigments with visible absorption and NIR reflectivity. Copper(Ⅱ) oxide and Silicon dioxide multilayer are theoretically investigated with different numbers of layers and thicknesses. The optimized structures appear various dark-tone colors with high NIR-reflectivity over 90%.

Propagating inhomogeneous electromagnetic waves called surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can be excited by free-space beams on corrugated conducting surfaces at resonance angles determined by corrugation period, permittivity, and optical frequency. SPPs are coupled to and co-propagate with surface charge displacements. Complete electrical isolation of individual conducting corrugations prevents the charge displacement necessary to sustain an SPP, such that excitation resonances of traveling SPPs are absent. However, SPPs can be excited via electric induction if a smooth conducting surface exists below and nearby the isolated conducting corrugations. The dependence of SPP excitation resonances on that separation is experimentally investigated here at long-wave infrared wavelengths. We find that excitation resonances for traveling SPPs broaden and disappear as the dielectric’s physical thickness is increased beyond ~1% of the free-space wavelength. The resonance line width increases with refractive index and optical thickness of the dielectric.

Fibronectin (FN) is a mediator molecule, which can connect cell receptors to the extracellular matrix (ECM) in tissues. This function is highly desirable for biomaterial surfaces in order to support cell adhesion. Controlling the fibronectin adsorption profile on substrates is challenging because of possible conformational changes after deposition, or due to displacement by secondary proteins from the culture medium. Here, we aim to develop a method to realize self-stabilized ECM glycoprotein layers with preserved native secondary structure on substrates. Our concept is the assembly of FN layers at the air-water (A-W) interface by spreading FN solution as droplets on the interface and transfer of the layer by the Langmuir-Schäfer (LS) method onto a substrate. It is hypothesized that 2D confinement and high local concentration at A-W interface supports FN self-interlinking to form cohesive films. Rising surface pressure with time, plateauing at 10.5 mN·m-1 (after 10 hrs), indicated that FN was self-assembling at the A-W interface. In situ polarization-modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy of the layer revealed that FN maintained its native anti-parallel β-sheet structure after adsorption at the A-W interface. FN self-interlinking and elasticity was shown by the increase in elastic modulus and loss modulus with time using interfacial rheology. A network-like structure of FN films formed at the A-W interface was confirmed by atomic force microscopy after LS transfer onto Si-wafer. FN films consisted of native, globular FN molecules self-stabilized by intermolecular interactions at the A-W interface. Therefore, the facile FN self-stabilized network-like films with native anti-parallel β-sheet structure produced here, could serve as stable ECM protein coatings to enhance cell attachment on in vitro cell culture substrates and planar implant materials.

The configurations associated with the dissociative adsorption of water on a variety of low-coordinated sites of MgO(100) surfaces, including corners, steps, MgO vacancies, and kinks on 〈010〉 steps, have been studied and assigned by combining infrared spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Three kinds of MgO powders were examined: powders of very high specific surface area prepared by chemical vapor synthesis and well-defined cubic smoke particles obtained by combustion in either 20:80 or 60:40 O2:Ar mixtures, the latter one involving less defects and smaller particles. It appears that an imperative requirement to obtain a precise characterization of the reactive behavior of defects is to keep the samples in ultra–high vacuum conditions and to control the water partial pressure finely.

We have investigated the adsorption and dissociation of water and its co-adsorption with CO on atomically defined cobalt oxide nanoislands on Pt(111). The CoO islands were prepared under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions by reactive deposition of Co metal in oxygen atmosphere. The island structure was characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), showing that the nanoislands consist of a CoO bilayer and are regularly shaped with island edges that are mainly terminated by Co2+ ions. D2O was dosed in UHV onto the CoO islands on Pt(111) after pre-saturation with CO. D2O dissociation was monitored in situ by isothermal and temperature programmed infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). Isotopic exchange experiments were performed with H2O, D2O, and D218O to elucidate the nature of the hydroxyl groups. Three principal types of OD species are identified: (i) isolated OD at the edges of the CoO islands (Co-OeD), (ii) OD groups within larger hydroxylated areas on the CoO islands (Co-OcD), and (iii) isolated OD groups on the CoO terraces (Co-OtD). At 400 K, water adsorbs dissociatively on the CoO islands and forms isolated hydroxyl species (Co-OeD) at the island edges only. At room temperature (300 K), the coverage of hydroxyl groups increases rapidly, in line with the water-assisted hydroxylation reaction suggested previously. Adsorption experiments with D218O suggest that two equivalent groups are formed from one water molecule after dissociation at island edges, leading to the formation of larger hydroxylated areas on the CoO islands (Co-OcD) and, in addition, isolated OD species on the CoO terraces (Co-OtD). While the initial step of D2O dissociation is facile, the formation of larger hydroxylated areas is a slow and irreversible process. At 200 K, the formation of hydroxylated areas is accompanied by the co-adsorption of molecular water. The hydroxyl groups on the CoO islands are shown to interact with the CO preadsorbed on the CoO/Pt(111) model system. In particular, we observe a new CO species, stabilized by OD groups on the CoO islands, which adsorbs much stronger than CO on the OD-free CoO surface.

The degradation of organic molecules in an aqueous medium using heterogeneous photocatalysis depends on the chemical composition and concentration of the organic compound, the crystalline and morphological nature of the photocatalyst, the pH of the dye dilution, and the reaction temperature. Since photocatalytic degradation is a process that occurs on the surface of the catalytic material, it is desirable to induce maximum adsorption of the organic compound. One strategy to achieve this is to functionalize the surface of the catalyst to retain the molecule of interest. In this work, we studied the interaction of acid orange 7 (AO7) with commercial TiO2-anatase powder catalyst, and with a catalyst synthesized in house using titanium tetrachloride and ethanolamine (TiO2-et). Our results indicate that there is no adsorption of the AO7 dye on the TiO2-et particles. The infrared spectrum of the TiO2-et particles is presented.

Reactions of alkali salts (nitrates, sulfates, carbonates, halides, borates) play a key role in the low temperature feed conversion occurring at the cold cap during processing of Hanford Low Activity Waste (LAW) glass melters. An alkali salt phase can sometimes form, and preferentially incorporate radionuclides of Cs, Cl, I, and Tc. During melting of the slurry feed, some of the feed components sequentially break down with increasing temperature to form gases (i.e., nitrates ➔ NOx, carbonates ➔ CO2, and boric acid ➔ H2O) or partially volatilize (halides). Sulfate, however, tends not to volatilize but has limited solubility in the final borosilicate glass waste form. To improve understanding of these low temperature processes and their composition dependencies, a scoping study was undertaken to synthesize salt systems that remain amorphous at room temperature, thus facilitating structural study. Melts of equimolar ratios of K2SO4-ZnSO4 (a known ionic glass-forming system) with added nitrates, halides, or carbonates, were melted and quenched. Some of the materials formed single phase glasses and some underwent crystallization upon quenching. Characterization of these quenched materials by thermal analysis, infrared absorption, and diffraction was performed. Addition of other anions to the sulfate base glass resulted in a distortion of the sulfate tetrahedron, as evidenced by infrared absorption. Carbonates strongly promoted crystallization, mostly of carbonate phases. Nitrates promoted crystallization of ZnO, and the nitrate volatilized with some incorporating into the glass. Halides tended to incorporate into the glass, but the small (F) and large (I) halogens promoted crystallization of sulfate-containing crystals, while moderate sized (Cl) halogens produced single-phase ionic glasses.

We propose a method for precision control of the temporal pulse shape in 808 nm emission from Er-doped fluoroindate glasses. Previously, authors have reported the model based controller design, in which the controller varies and controls the pump rate in real time through the pump power. In model-based design, the performance of the resultant controller depends on the accuracy of the mathematical model used to represent the device in the design process. In this paper a more robust control scheme using model-free approach is presented. Specifically, the controller design is independent of the mathematical model and hence any modeling error has no effect on the device performance. This robustness against modeling error is critical for control purposes in optical materials where various up-conversion parameters are unknown or hard to determine with certainty.

This manuscript aims at synthesizing Al2O3-de-ionized water nanofluid and constructing a practical design of self-cooling device that does not require any external power input. Crystalline phase of powder was confirmed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) showed the various functional groups and absorption bands and average particle size was calculated to be 58.608 nm by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) annealed at 900K. Experimental investigations were carried out to determine the effect of volume fraction of Al2O3 nanoparticles in the nanofluid on the rate of heat transfer from heat load to heat sink. Temperature of heat load was taken as 80° C. According to our results, cooling by 15°C, 13°C and 12°C was attained when volume fraction of nanoparticles was 1.5%, 1% and 0.5% respectively. The thermal conductivity was also measured and found to be increasing with the concentration of nanoparticles in nanofluid. Hence, indicating the use of nanofluids with suitable concentration in various cooling applications.

Polyethylene is one of the most produced materials in the world—is it a blessing or a curse? This article makes the case for the former by highlighting a range of emerging applications of polyethylene in energy and sustainability, including passive cooling of electronics and wearables, water treatment and harvesting, and even ocean cleanup from plastic waste debris.

Usually, when the word “polyethylene” is mentioned in the context of discussing sustainability issues, a good chance the message is that “the current level of environmental plastic pollution is unsustainable.” Polyethylene does indeed comprise a large volume of plastic waste, but only because it is used in so many different products, which eventually reach the end of their lifetime and end up on the landfills and in the ocean. There is, however, a good reason—actually, many good reasons—why polyethylene is one of the most produced materials in the world, and this review discusses various useful applications stemming from the unique material properties of polyethylene. Some of the emerging applications of polyethylene hold high promise for sustainable energy generation from renewable sources and for sustainable management of planetary energy and water resources. Light weight and corrosion resistance of polyethylene, combined with its unique infrared transparency and heat transfer properties, which can be engineered to span between the near-perfect insulation and metal-like conduction, are at the core of new technological applications of a not-so-old material.

In this work, the synthesis of starch-clay nanocomposites was carried out. For this purpose, natural starch was extracted from rice grains and it was characterized by structural and spectrophotometric techniques. Afterwards, it was used as the polymer matrix for the synthesis of nanocomposites crosslinked with different agents: glycerol, citric acid (CA) and sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP). As a reinforcement phase, a natural Mexican clay from the Montmorillonite-type (Mt), was employed, which was modified with a cationic surfactant, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA-Br), in order to exchange cations, present in the interlaminar spaces of the raw clay mineral with those of the cationic surfactant; thus, changing its nature from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. Characterization, of both natural and organo-modified clays, was carried out by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), to determine the change in morphology between these two minerals; X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), to obtain the crystalline structure of the organo-modified clay and that of the raw clay mineral (Mt). Also, the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was employed to determine materials spectra, and their thermal stability was evaluated by means of the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). On the other hand, the synthesis of these nanocomposites was performed using different crosslinking agents, glycerol, CA or STMP, in order to identify the effect of them into the final properties of these materials.

We report on photo-induced magnetic effect and infrared (IR) spectroscopic behavior of colossal magnetorestive manganite La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) with rare earth co-doping (Er3+ and Yb3) at room temperature. X-ray diffraction shows that a structural phase transformation from rhombohedral to hexagonal with increasing Er and Yb concentrations. Photo-induced magnetoresistance showed that Er3+ and Yb+3 ions have significant influence on the magnetic and electrical ordering of LSMO under the influence of UV light. The optical excitation also shows an enhancement in the magnetotransport properties of LSMO.

Polysulfone (Pfu) films were modified by grafting poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by the oxidative pre-irradiation technique. To achieve this modification, some parameters were modified such as the radiation dose, the concentration of PVA, the temperature and the reaction time. It was found that the grafted films with 12% presented a greater grafting percentage (0.86%). The modified films were characterized by means of the contact angle, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques.

Hydrogenated microcrystalline Silicon-Germanium (μc-SiGe:H) thin films were deposited using the Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) technique from a gas mixture of SiH4, GeH4, H2 and Ar at a substrate temperature of 200 ° C. The films were deposited at a pressure of 1.5 Torr, while the RF power was varied in the range of 20 W to 35 W. Structural, optical and electrical characterization was performed in the films, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was performed in order to analyze the hydrogen bonding of silicon and germanium, while Raman spectroscopy was used in order to analyze the crystallinity of the films. Through the optical and electrical characterization of the films, parameters such as the optical band gap (Eg) and the activation energy (EA) were obtained, respectively. The conductivity of the films changed up two to orders of magnitude from dark conditions to illumination AM 1.5. Finally, the correlation between deposition RF power and the film properties is presented.

In this study, the synthesis of a clay-polymer composite was carried out by the in-situ polymerization method of two biopolymers, Alginate-Chitosan (Alg-Chit), with the intercalation of an organo-modified clay, for the removal of bromophenol blue dye (BP-Dye). For this purpose, a natural Montmorillonite clay from Mexico was modified with a cationic surfactant, in order to exchange the cations of the clay galleries with those of the surfactant, and to change its nature from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. Moreover, the synthesis of the copolymer was carried out using different ratios between both biopolymers. Once the copolymer was obtained, it was characterized through FTIR technique. On the other hand, the modified clay was used to obtain the polymer-clay composites using a ratio of 2%-wt of the homopolymer, and the obtained material was characterized with the same technique. Finally, a contact test was carried out by preparing a solution of BP-Dye at a concentration of 5 mg/L, with and without initial pH adjustment, for 1 h, in a bath at controlled room temperature and constant stirring (100 rpm). After this time, phases were separated, and the quantification of the dye was carried out by UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Biogenic minerals are widely studied materials for their particular properties derived from their hierarchical structure, using building blocks with sizes spanning several orders of magnitude. These special features can be assessed with different analytical tools, and it is important to know their capabilities and limitations. In order to determine the hierarchical structure of the shells, the nacre and prismatic layers of two marine animals were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Based on these assessments, we found that the combination of these three techniques is useful to describe each structure level, and to explain some of the unique properties observed in these natural materials.
