Thin clay films prepared from aqueous suspensions of the potassium or sodium salt of picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid) with Al-, Fe-, or Cu-saturated montmorillonite or with montmorillonite coated with hydrous oxides of Al, Fe, or Cu were examined in an air-dry condition by infrared (IR) techniques to elucidate possible modes of interaction between picloram and the mineral surfaces. Deuteration was used to confirm band assignments of picloram and its salts prior to interaction with montmorillonite. Picloram interactions with Al- and Fe-saturated montmorillonite and with montmorillonite coated with hydrous oxides of Al and Fe were concentration dependent. At high picloram concentrations similarities with the IR spectrum of potassium picloram indicated that much of the picloram was present in the salt form. As the concentration of picloram was reduced below that equivalent to 1 meq/g clay, the IR spectrum indicated the presence of the monomeric acid on the mineral surface. The spectrum of picloram on montmorillonite with a coating of copper hydrous oxide was similar to that of a Cu-picloram complex indicating coordination type bonding. The spectrum of picloram with Cu-saturated montmorillonite did not correspond to any of the other spectra of picloram examined. The interaction of picloram with montmorillonite coated with a hydrous oxide coating of Cu and with Cu-saturated montmorillonite were independent of picloram concentration in the range 2.20-0.44 meq/g clay.

Old man’s beard is a woody liana that has become an invasive weed in many areas of its introduction, through its vigorous spread and negative impacts on the tree hosts it climbs. Control techniques that improve precision and reduce non-target damage are increasingly preferred for weed control yet have not been compared in published research for use against old man’s beard. Field experiments in New Zealand were conducted to: (i) assess targeted herbicide techniques for control of this weed’s climbing stems when growing among trees and (ii) assess foliar herbicides for control of creeping stems in ruderal sites. For climbing stems, triclopyr in oil was applied around the circumference of woody stems near their base, which was compared with cutting the stems and applying concentrated glyphosate gel (45% ai) to each cut end. Herbicides were applied in autumn directly to individual stem bases of the weed, thereby protecting tree hosts and other non-target vegetation. The basal application of triclopyr to intact stems was highly effective (>95% mortality) with no damage to nearby trees noted. The glyphosate gel applications to cut stems were less effective (56% mortality by 2 yr after treatment). For creeping stems in grass-dominated ruderal sites, selective foliar herbicide sprays had not been previously juxtaposed to compare control of old man’s beard. Three selective sprays that do not damage existing grass cover were applied in autumn at their recommended rates: (i) metsulfuron; (ii) triclopyr; and (iii) a mixture of triclopyr, picloram, and aminopyralid. All herbicide treatments provided effective control, although metsulfuron had a negative effect on grass vigor, which might allow new establishment of old man’s beard seedlings by competitive release. These results provide effective options that reduce non-target damage for control of both climbing and creeping old man’s beard stems.

Rush skeletonweed is an invasive weed in the winter wheat–fallow production regions of the inland Pacific Northwest. The objectives of this study were to determine the dose response of rush skeletonweed to picloram applied in the fall or spring of the fallow year with either a broadcast or weed-sensing sprayer, and to evaluate injury and grain yield in the subsequent winter wheat crop from these fallow treatments. Field studies were conducted between 2019 and 2022. Fall treatments were applied at one site in 2019, and one site in 2020. Spring treatments were applied at two sites in 2021. Four picloram herbicide rates (0, 140, 280, and 560 g ae ha−1), were applied with either a weed-sensing precision applicator or with a standard broadcast spray applicator. Rush skeletonweed densities in the wheat crop following fall-applied treatments declined with increasing picloram rates at both sites. Treatments applied with the weed-sensing sprayer achieved similar efficacy to broadcast treatments with an average of 37% and 26% of the broadcast rate applied. Spring-applied broadcast treatments resulted in reduced rush skeletonweed densities in wheat with increasing picloram rates. Picloram rate had no apparent effect on rush skeletonweed density when applied in the spring with a weed-sensing sprayer; however, the weed-sensing sprayer applied just 16% and 9% of the broadcast rate. Winter wheat grain yields were not reduced by fall picloram applications. Grain yields were not reduced by spring applications of picloram with the weed-sensing sprayer; however, grain yields were reduced by spring broadcast applications of picloram at both locations, and grain yields declined as the picloram rate increased. Applying picloram in the fall of the fallow phase with a weed-sensing sprayer provides effective and economical control of rush skeletonweed with a low risk for crop injury and yield loss in the following winter wheat crop.

Rush skeletonweed is an invasive weed in winter wheat (WW)/summer fallow (SF) rotations in the low to intermediate rainfall areas of the inland Pacific Northwest. Standard weed control practices are not effective, resulting in additional SF tillage or herbicide applications. The objective of this field research was to identify herbicide treatments that control rush skeletonweed during the SF phase of the WW/SF rotation. Trials were conducted near LaCrosse, WA, in 2017–2019 and 2018–2020, and near Hay, WA, in 2018–2020. The LaCrosse 2017–2019 trial was in tilled SF; the other two trials were in no-till SF. Fall postharvest applications in October included clopyralid, clopyralid plus 2,4-D, clopyralid plus 2,4-D plus chlorsulfuron plus metsulfuron, aminopyralid, picloram, and glyphosate plus 2,4-D. Spring treatments of clopyralid, aminopyralid, and glyphosate were applied to rush skeletonweed rosettes. Summer treatments of 2,4-D were applied when rush skeletonweed initiated bolting. Plant density was monitored through the SF phase in all plots. Picloram provided complete control of rush skeletonweed through June at all three locations. Fall-applied clopyralid, clopyralid plus 2,4-D, and clopyralid followed by 2,4-D in summer reduced rush skeletonweed through June at the two LaCrosse sites but were ineffective at Hay. In August, just prior to WW seeding, the greatest reductions in rush skeletonweed density were achieved with picloram and fall-applied clopyralid at the two LaCrosse sites. No treatments provided effective control into August at Hay. Wheat yield in the next crop compared to the nontreated control was reduced only at one LaCrosse site by a spring-applied aminopyralid treatment, otherwise no other reductions were found. Long-term control of rush skeletonweed in WW/SF may be achieved by a combination of fall application of picloram, after wheat harvest, followed by an effective burn-down treatment in August prior to WW seeding.

The pyridine carboxylic acid (PCA) herbicide family can exhibit differential activity within and among plant species, despite molecular resemblances. Aminocyclopyrachlor (AMCP), a pyrimidine carboxylic acid, is a recently discovered compound with similar use patterns to those of the PCA family; however, relative activity among PCAs and AMCP is not well understood. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify relative activity among aminopyralid, picloram, clopyralid, triclopyr, and AMCP in canola, squash, and okra using dose-response whole-plant bioassays. Clopyralid was less active than all other herbicides in all species and did not fit dose-response models. Aminopyralid and picloram performed similarly in squash (ED50 = 21.1 and 23.3 g ae ha−1, respectively). Aminopyralid was 3.8 times and 1.7 times more active than picloram in canola (ED50 = 60.3 and 227.7 g ha−1, respectively) and okra (ED50 = 10.3 and 17.3 g ha−1, respectively). Triclopyr (ED50 = 37.3 g ha−1) was more active than AMCP (ED50 = 112.9 g ha−1) and picloram in canola. Aminocyclopyrachlor (ED50 = 6.6 g ha−1) and triclopyr (ED50 = 7.8 g ha−1) were more active in squash than aminopyralid and picloram. In okra, AMCP (ED50 = 14.6 g ha−1) and aminopyralid (ED50 = 10.3 g ha−1) performed similarly but were more active than triclopyr (ED50 = 88.2 g ha−1). Herbicidal activity among AMCP and PCAs was vastly different despite molecular similarities that could be due to variable target-site sensitivity among species.

PRE and POST herbicide options were evaluated to control perilla mint, a potentially deadly plant for livestock. The germination requirements of seed from weedy populations were also investigated to better understand and predict emergence timing. POST applications of aminocyclopyrachlor blends, glyphosate, picloram+2,4-D, aminopyralid+2,4-D, and 2,4-D alone provided superior control of perilla mint when applied in the early reproductive growth stage. Picloram+2,4-D and aminocyclopyrachlor+chlorsulfuron also provided soil residual activity and the most effective PRE control followed by pendimethalin and aminopyralid+2,4-D. Seed from weedy populations tend to germinate in a range of night/day soil temperatures from 10–15 C to 25–30 C. Therefore, application and activation of the most effective PRE treatments should be made before these temperatures occur in areas where weedy perilla mint populations are found.

A 2,4-D-resistant tall waterhemp population (FS) from Nebraska was evaluated for resistance to other TIR1 auxin receptor herbicides and to herbicides having alternative mechanisms of action using greenhouse bioassays and genetic markers. Atrazine, imazethapyr, lactofen, mesotrione, glufosinate, and glyphosate were applied in a single-dose bioassay, and tissue was collected from marked plants for genetic analysis. The FS population was not injured by atrazine or by imazethapyr. Approximately 50% of the plants survived lactofen and were actively growing 28 d after treatment. The population was susceptible to mesotrione, glufosinate, and glyphosate. Ametryn, chlorimuron-ethyl, 2,4-D, aminocyclopyraclor, aminopyralid, and picloram were applied in dose–response studies. The FS population was sensitive to ametryn, and the Ser-264-Gly substitution in the D1 protein was not detected, suggesting the lack of response to atrazine is not due to a target-site mutation. The FS population exhibited less than 50% injury to chlorimuron-ethyl at application rates 20 times the labeled use rate. The Ser-653-Asn acetolactate synthase (ALS) substitution, which confers resistance to imidazolinone herbicides, was present in the FS population. However, this does not explain the lack of response to the sulfonylurea herbicide, chlorimuron-ethyl. Sequencing of a portion of the PPX2L gene did not show the ΔG210 mutation that confers resistance to protoporphyrinogen oxidase–inhibiting herbicides, suggesting that other factors were responsible for waterhemp survival after lactofen application. The FS population was confirmed to be at least 30-fold resistant to 2,4-D relative to the susceptible populations. In addition, it was at least 3-fold less sensitive to aminopyralid and picloram, two other TIR1 auxin receptor herbicides, than the 2,4-D-susceptible populations were. These data indicated that the FS population contains both target and non–target site mechanisms conferring resistance to herbicides spanning at least three mechanisms of action: TIR1 auxin receptors, ALS inhibitors, and photosystem II inhibitors.

Sixteen applications of imazapyr and other herbicides were made to field bindweed from 1982 to 1986. Control with imazapyr was 89% or more 1 yr after treatment at 0.14 kg ai ha-1 when plants were growing vigorously at application. Only 1 of 16 applications of imazapyr at 0.56 kg ha-1 controlled less than 90% regardless of plant vigor. Control at 0.56 kg ha-1 was usually superior to that obtained with dicamba at 1.1 and 2.2 kg ae ha-1, and 2,4-D at 1.1 kg ae ha-1, as well as combinations of picloram with either 2,4-D or dicamba. All herbicides were less effective when applied to field bindweed with poor vigor. Winter wheat planted in the fall up to 122 days after application was injured 20 to 88% by imazapyr at 0.14 kg ha-1. Sorghum planted the next spring was injured 15% or less by imazapyr at 0.14 and 0.28 kg ha-1.

Field experiments were conducted in 1986 and 1987 to determine the efficacy of various herbicides applied in the spring or fall for redvine population reductions. Spring applications of dicamba and picloram reduced redvine populations 4 mo after application. These treatments also reduced soybean density. A sequential spring followed by fall application of dicamba reduced redvine stem counts 32 to 45% the following year. Spring or spring followed by fall applications of clopyralid and hexazinone were not effective in reducing redvine populations. A fall application of clopyralid, dicamba, Dowco 433, glyphosate, or imazapyr reduced redvine regrowth 78 to 97% the following year. Dicamba at 2.2 kg ae ha-1, 3.4 kg ae ha-1 glyphosate, and 0.28 kg ai ha-1 imazapyr increased soybean yield the following year because of reduced redvine competition and lack of herbicide injury. Redvine populations were unaffected by fall applications of fosamine, hexazinone, and picloram, or clomazone applied in the spring or in the fall followed by a sequential spring application. A sequential spring followed by fall treatment of 1.1 + 1.1 kg ha-1 dicamba or 0.14 + 0.14 kg ae ha-1 clopyralid reduced trumpetcreeper population 49 to 58% the following year.

Mortality of potted huisache seedlings averaged 87 to 100% 18 weeks after picloram or clopyralid was applied with a model carpeted roller at concentrations as low as 7.5 g ae/L. A 1:1 mixture of picloram and clopyralid was equally effective. Triclopyr was effective only when applied to small seedlings in the spring, and an ester was more effective than an amine formulation. A 1:1 mixture of clopyralid and triclopyr ester was intermediate in effectiveness between the two herbicides applied alone. Adding surfactant increased canopy reduction and plant mortality (P = 0.1 to 0.01), especially at lower herbicide concentrations.

Honey mesquite [Prosopis glandulosa (Torr.) ♯ PRCJG] was treated with several herbicides and herbicide combinations primarily on the Texas Post Oak Savannah over a 4-yr period. Sprays of glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine], picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid), 2,4,5-T [(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy)acetic acid], and triclopyr {[(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl)oxy] acetic acid} generally caused a high degree of canopy reduction in the fall of the year the spraying was done. However, sprays of clopyralid (3,6-dichloro-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid) and picloram were the most effective herbicides for killing honey mesquite 1 yr after application. At 1.1 kg ai/ha, clopyralid killed 70 to 95% and picloram killed 20 to 65% of plants 3 yr or older. Picloram plus 2,4,5-T was intermediate in effectiveness. Sprays of 2,4,5-T and triclopyr killed some plants. Picloram and tebuthiuron {N-[5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]-N,N′-dimethylurea} pellets killed few if any honey mesquite. Hexazinone [3-cyclohexyl-6-(dimethylamino)-1-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione] boluses killed no more than 37% of the honey mesquite at rates up to 4.5 kg ai/ha. Herbicides sometimes killed more honey mesquite with sprouts 2 or 3 yr old than at 1 yr old.

Four experiments (three in Macedonia, Greece and one in Holtville, CA) were conducted in 1988 and 1989 to evaluate foliar applications of picloram, glyphosate alone and with adjuvant, and triclopyr for the control of established silverleaf nightshade. Silverleaf nightshade control was determined by comparing stem population at the time of herbicide application to stem population 6 to 11 mo after application. Picloram, averaged over rate and location, controlled silverleaf nightshade consistently, restricting regrowth to less than 5%. Silverleaf nightshade control with glyphosate alone or with adjuvant varied with location, regrowth ranged from 0 to 69%. Regrowth of silverleaf nightshade treated with triclopyr approached that of the untreated control.

Foliage-only, soil-only, and foliage plus soil applications of picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid), clopyralid (3,6-dichloro-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid), chlorsulfuron {2-chloro-N-[[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)amino]carbonyl]benzenesulfonamide}, and metsulfuron {2-[[[[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl]benzoic acid} were used to determine the contribution of soil spray deposit to the control of Canada thistle [Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. ♯ CIRAR] under greenhouse conditions. Herbicide reaching the soil contributed significantly to the suppression of secondary shoot growth, particularly when pots were watered from above. In subirrigated pots, the herbicides showed activity if they were sprayed on moist soil, but not if they were sprayed on dry soil. These results suggest that it is important to shield the soil during postemergence applications of herbicides in greenhouse experiments in order to avoid overestimating foliar activity.

Dicamba, 2,4-D, picloram, and commercially available premixes of glyphosate plus 2,4-D or glyphosate plus dicamba were evaluated alone and in combination for field bindweed control in a winter wheat-fallow system in Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Montana. Approximately one year after application, herbicide mixtures containing picloram at 0.14 or 0.28 kg ai ha-1 provided the best control. In five of seven locations, the control provided by picloram in herbicide mixtures was greater than the control provided by glyphosate plus 2,4-D, 2,4-D, or dicamba when these products were mixed with picloram. Glyphosate plus 2,4-D or glyphosate plus dicamba premixes, or 2,4-D added to dicamba were less effective for long-term control of field bindweed than mixtures containing 0.14 kg ai ha-1 or more of picloram. Under drought conditions in Kansas in 1988, picloram did not control field bindweed as well as in Colorado, Wyoming, or Montana where rainfall was normal.

Field studies were established to evaluate several herbicides for buckbrush control in tall fescue pastures. Buckbrush was controlled most consistently by 2,4-D amine or low volatile ester, or package-mixes of 2,4-D plus dicamba or triclopyr. Two consecutive years of herbicide application was more effective for reducing buckbrush stem populations than one application.

Field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L.) was controlled most effectively when glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] was applied as a foliar spray to blooming field bindweed. This control resulted in significant yield increases of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Earlier growth stage treatments were less effective. Dicamba (3,6-dichloro-o-anisic acid), used similarly, controlled field bindweed but caused injury to the following wheat crop. Preharvest treatments of glyphosate in wheat aided harvesting operations and controlled the perennial field bindweed through the summer. Several dinitroaniline herbicides applied as a subsurface layer (SSL), controlled field bindweed for more than 8 months after treatment. However, these treatments caused visible injury and affected the yield of the first crop of wheat but had little effect on a second crop. Dicamba applied SSL at lower rates resulted in excellent field bindweed control.

Honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa Torr. # PRCJG) was treated with four herbicides at 1.1 kg ae/ha at 14 dates from April 30 through September 23 over a 2-yr period. Overall, clopyralid (3,6-dichloro-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid) was the most effective herbicide, killing 80% or more of the honey mesquite at most dates. Picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid), triclopyr {[(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl)oxy] acetic acid}, and 2,4,5-T [(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] were less effective than clopyralid. Honey mesquite control was correlated with Julian day of year sprayed, 15 plant, 11 environmental, and 8 herbicide concentration variables. Most effective control was negatively correlated with Julian day of year sprayed and new xylem ring thickness. Control was positively correlated with total daily apparent photosynthesis, upward methylene blue dye movement in the xylem, and herbicide concentration in the xylem 3 days after spraying. The only environmental variable of 11 measured that was significantly correlated with honey mesquite control was soil water and that was only with picloram. The concentration of herbicide in the stem was highest for clopyralid, followed by picloram, and then by 2,4,5-T and triclopyr, which were about equal. Variables most useful in regression equations for predicting control with herbicides were total daily apparent photosynthesis and rate of upward movement of methylene blue dye. Variables most incorporated into regression equations relating honey mesquite control with herbicide content were herbicide concentrations in the xylem 3 or 30 days after treatment.

Several labeled herbicide treatments reduced winter wheat height and grain yield when applied at different growth stages in 1984 and 1985. Yield reductions were related to reduced spike production. Wheat height and yield generally were greatest when herbicides were applied at Zadoks' Stage 29 and lowest at Stage 13. Herbicide treatments did not affect wheat kernels per spike, kernel weight, volume weight, or germination either year. However, most herbicide treatments either increased or decreased seed protein content, depending on the year.

The Spurgia esulae gall midge was introduced in North Dakota in 1986 as a biocontrol agent for leafy spurge. Spurgia esulae causes stem tip galls thereby decreasing seed production and it has been most successful near wooded areas. However, a second control method is needed to reduce the leafy spurge infestation and prevent spread from roots. Imazethapyr, 2,4-D, or picloram application did reduce the number of S. esulae galls but not the number of larvae per gall. Long-term S. esulae population was not affected by herbicide application. The integration of herbicides with S. esulae would prevent leaf spurge spread from a wooded area and would reduce seed production within an area where herbicides generally cannot be used.

Quinclorac is a systemic herbicide registered to control annual grass and broadleaf weeds in rice. Field research was conducted to determine the most effective quinclorac treatment for leafy spurge control. Leafy spurge control 12 mo after treatment (MAT) averaged 38 and 77% when quinclorac was applied at 0.56 and 1.7 kg ae/ha, respectively. Quinclorac applied with the crop-oil-based adjuvant Scoil provided similar leafy spurge control compared to quinclorac applied alone. Quinclorac plus Scoil applied with picloram provided better leafy spurge control than quinclorac plus Scoil alone. The optimum date for fall treatment with quinclorac is broad. Quinclorac at 1.1 kg/ha plus Scoil at 2.3 L/ha applied on September 1, September 15, October 1, and October 15 provided similar leafy spurge control and averaged 56% 12 MAT.
