Previous studies (e.g Rogers et al., 1985; Estell and Gaylean, 1985) have shown that addition of sodium (Na) as NaHCO3 or NaCl to conserved feeds increases rumen pH, fluid dilution rate, digestibility of dietary nutrients and rumen cellulolysis. Little research has involved the effect of Na supplementation on cattle fed fresh herbage.

The objective of the present experiment was to examine the effects of 0 (Nil), 32 (Low), 66 (Medium) and 96 (High) Kg Na ha-1 yr-1 applied as fertilizer to zero-grazed perennial ryegrass pasture, on rumen digestion and feed and water intakes.

Six experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of a feed supplement on the performance of grazing Belgian Blue double-muscled (BBDM) heifers with an initial weight and age of 195 ± 43 kg and 190 ± 52 days. Treatments included were: Exp. 1: supplementation with beet pulp (BP): 2 kg/day per head v.ad libitum intake; Exp. 2: supplementation ad libitum with BP v. a mixture of BP and soybean meal (SBM; BP/SBM ratio of 80/20; FW (fresh weight) basis); Exp. 3: supplementation with 4 kg/day per head of a mixture of BP/SBM (80/20; FW basis) v. BP/formaldehyde-treated SBM (BP/FSBM); Exp. 4: supplementation with 4 kg/day per head of a mixture with a similar protein content (125 g DVE per kg dry matter (DM)), consisting of 80/20 BP/SBM v. 92/8 BP/FSBM; Exp. 5: supplementation with 3 kg/day per head of a mixture of BP/SBM (80/20; FW basis) v. BP/DDGS (dried distillers grains and solubles; 70/30, FW basis); and Exp. 6: supplementation with 3 kg/day per head of 80/20 BP/SBM v. maize silage (MS) and SBM, on the basis of a similar protein concentration in the DM as the 80/20 BP/SBM supplement, and fed at a similar amount of DM as in the BP/SBM group. Supplementing BP ad libitum did not affect daily gain (0.54 v. 0.48 kg) and partial feed conversion (3.62 kg on average) compared with 2 kg/day. Supplying SBM besides BP increased growth rate compared with BP (0.87 v. 0.62 kg/day; P < 0.001), but partial feed conversion was similar. Supplying FSBM did not affect growth rate and partial feed conversion (P > 0.10), but blood urea levels were reduced by FSBM (P < 0.05). DDGS tended to increase growth rate (0.77 v. 0.59 kg/day; P < 0.10) compared with BP/SBM, without effect on partial feed conversion. Replacing BP by MS did not affect daily gain, but partial feed conversion tended to be higher (3.21 v. 3.60 kg/kg body weight (BW) gain; P = 0.062). Increasing the supplement (80/20 BP/SBM) level from 3 to 4 kg daily, corresponding to 1.02% and 1.18% of the mean BW, respectively, resulted in a tendency (P = 0.121) for an increased growth rate. Grazing BBDM heifers of <1 year of age necessitate extra protein besides an energy supplement to improve their performance. DDGS can replace SBM and BP can be replaced by MS.

Recent studies have shown that piglets, growing pigs and sows can perform well on diets containing substantial proportions of plain sugar beet pulp (SBP) (Bulman et al., 1989; Low et al., 1990; Close et al., 1990). SBP contains c. 600 g non-starch polysaccharides (NSP)/kg which, unlike starch, cannot be digested by the hosts’ enzymes but must be fermented by the gut microflora to yield VFA for subsequent use as an energy source by the animal.

The objective of this study was to determine the degree to which 32-day-old piglets, growing pigs of various ages, and mature sows can ferment the NSP content of diets containing varying proportions of SBP.

The environmental or polluting aspects of nitrogen in relation to livestock farms are gaseous losses to the atmosphere, nitrate leaching into water supplies and the eutrophication of surface waters. Gaseous losses of ammonia by volatilisation from organic materials and denitrification losses from soil as nitrogen and nitrous oxide have been at various times implicated in acid rain, photochemical smogs and effects on the ozone layer although the latter is now largely discounted. Nitrate leached from soil may pass rapidly into surface waters where it can affect quality for drinking or encourage algal blooms. Over porous strata nitrate may take many years to percolate downwards so as to pollute groundwater supplies. Restrictions may face livestock farmers in the arable areas of eastern England to restrict nitrate leaching from their land.

We conducted an experiment to determine whether early-life social learning of feeding site selection in lambs was sex-specific. Sixteen ewes and their new born lambs were used in a controlled experiment. Eight ewe–lamb pairs included a male lamb and the remaining eight a female lamb. All pairs were individually exposed to an experimental arena containing a safe and unsafe artificial feeding site (SFS, UFS) each consisting of nine bowls which contained either ground Bermuda grass hay (SFS) or ground alfalfa hay (UFS). The bowls in UFS were surrounded by bright orange traffic cones (visual cues). Half the ewes were trained with controlled electric shock to avoid UFS. Thus, pairs were randomly assigned to: (1) shock aversion training (SAT) to mothers of male lambs (MS); (2) SAT to mothers of female lambs (FS); (3) no aversion training (NAT, control) to mothers of male lambs (MC); and (4) NAT (control) to mothers of female lambs (FC). None of the lambs were subjected to SAT. During training, testing, extinction, and retraining ewe–lamb pairs were exposed to the arena together. Ewes were then removed from the experiment and two additional extinction phases were conducted with weaned lambs alone. Fear conditioning elicited UFS avoidance of both the trained ewes (means±s.e.m. % times observed in UFS during testing phase: FC=95.3±1.70; MC=94.4±4.87; FS=1.6±1.63; MS=0 ±0; P<0.01) and their naïve lambs (FC=83.8±6.07%; MC=76.6±6.56%; FS=30.4±7.90%; MS=33.9±9.23%; P<0.01). UFS avoidance in lambs occurred regardless of sex and tended to persist after weaning (% times observed in UFS during 1st post-weaning extinction phase: FC=92.6±4.50%; MC=89.8±6.09%; FS=45.1±10.57%; MS=43.5±10.42%; P=0.06). Fear conditioning in mothers appeared to alter sex-related differences in mother–infant behavioral synchrony by increasing and decreasing feeding synchrony of male and female lambs, respectively (FC: r=0.52, P<0.01; MC: r=−0.02, P=0.86; FS: r=0.14, P=0.26; MS: r=0.46, P<0.01). During the extinction phase mothers of ram lambs were observed feeding more often (FC=85.0±2.33%; MC=92.7±1.45%; FS=47.3±8.81%; MS=72±5.68%; P=0.02) and standing less often than ewes with daughters (FC=7.3±2.40%; MC=2.7±0.83%; FS=39.3±9.04%; MS=18.0±5.29%; P=0.06). This study suggests that social conditioning at an early age could be a viable tool to induce learning of feeding site avoidance in female and male lambs alike.

Effects of partial substitution of barley grain and soybean meal with fleabane (FB) Conyza bonariensis on growth performances and body compositions of 24 male local Awassi lambs were studied. All lambs were male with an average BW of 20.3 kg (s.d. = 2.0 kg) at the beginning of the experiment. Animals were randomly divided into four groups of six lambs each. Lambs in each group received individually their cereal–soybean-based total mixed rations with levels of FB: 0, 50, 100 and 150 g/kg dry matter (DM) diet, which replaced similar values of barley and soybean meal. All rations were isonitrogenous and isocaloric. The fattening experiment lasted 9 weeks, after which all lambs were slaughtered. The composition of nutrients in the C. bonariensis were 89.6%, 15.0%, 28.0%, 30.0% and 10% for organic matter, CP, NDF, ADF and lignin, respectively. At the end of the experiment, lambs fed 100 and 150 g FB/kg DM diets gained more weight (P < 0.05) than those fed the control and 50 g FB/kg DM diets. The DM intake was lower in lambs fed the highest level of FB compared with intakes of lambs in other treatments. Diet content of FB had significant effect (P < 0.05) on weights of empty body, carcass, gut and external (hide, head and feet) among all animals. However, FB had no effects on lambs’ thoracic organs (lungs and heart) and liver. Muscle, bone, omental and mesenteric fat, subcutaneous, intermuscular, pelvic and kidney fat weights (g/kg empty BW) were not affected by FB feeding. Carcass fat was decreased (P < 0.05) by the increase of FB. Total body fat was the same in all animals of the experiment.

Heart rate, ventilation measurements and gas exchange were studied in seven Hinterwaelder (Bos taurus) (494 (s.e. 16) kg) and five zebu (Bos indicusj oxen (516 (s.e. 60) kg), while the animals were standing, walking and pulling different loads. During standing, the heart rate, respiration rate, ventilation volume per min, total carbon dioxide production, total oxygen consumption and oxygen consumption per heart beat were lower in the zebu group than in the Hinterwaelder group (P < 0·05). The higher values for the Hinterwaelder were probably due to their higher metabolic rate, because of their younger age, higher level of feeding and better quality diet. The adaptation of gas exchange to higher work loads was achieved mainly by higher ventilation volumes. The composition of the expired air changed minimally. At similar levels of draught power output, the total energy expenditure minus energy expenditure of walking of the zebu oxen was lower than that of the Hinterwaelder oxen (P < 0·02). On the other hand at similar levels of heat production, the heart rate and ventilation volume per min did not differ significantly between the two breeds (P > 0·05). In spite of the differences in environment, feeding level and draught efficiency, the physiological adaptations made by the two breeds in response to work were similar.

There was no evidence from three experiments with 60, 600 and 400 Welsh Mountain ewes producing mostly single lambs that housing, tested as an extreme form of shelter, was of benefit to reproductive performance. This was so when the ewes were kept indoors throughout the whole of the winter, or only at mating or during late pregnancy. Also, housing during early lactation did not lead to improved lamb growth rate.

Housing at lambing was associated in two experiments with reductions in perinatal lamb mortality from 5·1% to 3·1% and from 7·2% to 5·9%, though the differences were not significant.

Flushing had no significant effect on conception rate or reproductive performance, but the data were in accord with the view that when applied to ewes in moderately thin condition it leads to reduced barrenness and some increase in twinning.

Lactation records of Jersey cattle on Jersey Island are recorded within National Milk Records of England and Wales (NMR). Since it is a closed breed population, it is not possible to amalgamate these data with Jerseys recorded in the United Kingdom (UK). Presently genetic evaluations of Jersey Island bulls are carried out using heifer records with a modification of the model used in the UK to account for the smaller herd sizes. Cows are not evaluated.

The objective of this study was to analyse Jersey Island data in order to estimate genetic parameters and establish genetic trends after evaluating all bulls and cows using an Individual Animal Model (LAM).

Thirty-six individually penned lambs (mean live weight 32·4 (s.d. 2·27) kg) were offered maize silagead libitumand one of three concentrate mixes, two of which contained extracted rapeseed meal (control and HR) and the other fish meal (FM). The concentrates were given according to live weight and in sufficient quantities to provide proportionately about 0·4 of the dry matter (DM) intake of the lambs. The dietary concentrations of nitrogen (N) g/kg DM were 22·4, 27·4 and 27·5 and of rumen undegradable N 6·6, 7·3 and 11·6 for the control, HR and FM diets respectively.

Both the HR and FM diets depressed maize silage intakes compared with the control during the first 21 days (P < 0·05) and lambs given the FM diet continued to have lower intakes than control lambs (P < 0·05) throughout the experiment. The live-weight gain of HR lambs was considerably depressed in comparison with the control and FM lambs during the first 21 days of the experiment (P < 0·05). Overall HR lambs gained weight more slowly than control and FM lambs up to 45 kg live weight but the difference was not statistically significant. Food conversion ratio was better for FM than HR (P < 0·01). There were no treatment differences in wool growth.

The results obtained provide little evidence that fish meal had any beneficial effects upon lamb growth compared with the control diet except a possible increase in the efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization.

In a population of 268 yearling bulls, those carcasses graded as U−, U0 or U+ for beef carcass conformation (n = 240) and those graded as 2−, 20 or 2+ for beef carcass fatness (n = 213) were selected to study the efficiency of carcass weight, carcass dimensions and instrumental colour of latissimus dorsi, rectusabdominis and subcutaneous fat, to discriminate among these carcass grades, in a population of high-muscled and very lean carcasses from young bulls. The increase in conformation grade meant an increase in carcass weight and perimeter of the leg. Classifiers use attributes characterizing muscular development and carcass profiles from a general impression of the whole carcass. There were no significant differences for carcass weight or carcass dimensions, among the carcasses classified according to the three fat classes. The a* and b* coordinate values for the latissimus dorsi muscle were observed to decrease significantly as the carcass conformation score increased (P < 0.05). However, muscle and subcutaneous fat of fatter carcasses showed higher a*, b* colour coordinates and chroma (C*) values than leaner carcasses. The CIE (Commission International de l’Éclairage) L*, a* and b* colour coordinate measurements taken on the carcasses 45 min post mortem varied significantly from the readings taken after hanging for 24 h (P < 0,001). The higher a* and b* values on the carcasses chilled for 24 h could be caused by oxygenation of both subcutaneous fat, and latissimusdorsi and rectusabdominis muscles in the time elapsing after slaughter and after carcass exposition to circulating air in the cooler for 24 h. Lightness of the latissimus dorsi muscle underwent a decrease, compared with an increase in the rectusabdominis muscle. Hardening of the subcutaneous fat during cold storage may exert an influence on the decrease in lightness observed. These differences in carcass colour during chilling storage would suggest that the relationship between carcass colour and conformation grades was higher shortly after slaughter. Both L* colour coordinate of fat colour (P < 0.01) and a*, b* and C* colour coordinates of latissimus dorsi muscle (P < 0.05) were related to conformation classification. Colour was more efficient to differentiate conformation than fat cover classes. Sixty-two percent of carcasses were correctly classified for conformation by colour differences but only 37% of carcasses were correctly classified for fatness by colour.

Six castrated male sheep were used to measure the apparent digestibility of fodder beet roots when included at two concentrations (610 and 490 glkg) in a feeding regimen in which the only other component was a standard complete diet of known digestibility. Mean digestibility coefficients for organic matter and gross energy for the beet were calculated to be 0·962 and 0·953 respectively. Digestible and metabolizable energy values (MJIkg DM) were calculated to be 16·0 and 13·1 respectively.

The data were collected from seven dairy farms in India on Sahiwal × Friesian crosses over a period of 30 years (1937–1966). There were nine distinct genetic groups (grades); Sahiwal, 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4 and 7/8 Friesian and Indian Friesians (animals having 15/16 or more Friesian blood).

Least-square analysis of variance was run to examine the effects of grades, farms, periods, seasons, and breed of sire on body weights at birth, 19 weeks, 12 months and 3 years. The effects due to grades, farms and periods were significant for all the traits. The effects due to season and breed of sire were significant for all traits except for weight at 3 years.

The least-square constants showed that, with increase in Friesian inheritance, birth weight increased considerably, while the increase in body weights at 19 weeks, 12 months and 3 years was only marked up to the 1/2-Friesian group.

Milk quotas have resulted in a reduction in dairy cow numbers between 1983 and 1987 which represents a loss of almost 250,000 calves for beef rearing. Increasing slaughter weights is one way to make up for some of the consequent shortfall in beef production. However slaughter weights will not increase unless it is profitable to the producer.

MLC investigations are showing that differences in performance within a group of finishing cattle means that there is extra profit in keeping faster growers longer than average. Table 1 shows slaughter weights of a group of Charolais cross male suckled calves at different ranges of daily gain. Optimised slaughter weights for each sub-group and the extra gross margin after interest which should have accrued if they had been sold at the optimised weights are also given. Within the group the fastest growing bulls should have been kept longest and would have shown the biggest increase in margins.

The fact that laying hens prefer to lay in a nest is not evidence in itself that a suitable nest-site is necessary for the hens’ well-being. Stronger evidence would be found if hens were prepared to pay some cost to use a nest-site. The objective of this study is to quantify the strength of individual hens’ nesting motivation in terms of meaningful measures such as overcoming aversive obstacles, work or time.

To investigate the motivation to gain access to a nestbox, hens were floor housed in groups of four in a pen containing food and water. Access to a nesting pen containing two nestboxes, could be restricted using a number of obstacles such as a narrow gap, a water bath and a swing door. Between trials hens were singly housed in wire-floored cages containing a perch and a nestbox. Results indicate that hens made less entries of longer duration to the nesting pen (Means + s.e in Figures 1 and 3) on treatment days with an obstacle than on control days without an obstacle. There was little disruption of use of the nest box (Figures 2 and 4). Hens that were due to lay made more visits on both control (C Egg) and treatment (T Egg) days (Figure 1), which may indicate greater motivation to explore the whole pen before oviposition.

Ultrasonic probe data were available on 199 crossbred pigs (98 females, 101 barrows). These animals were probed at approximately 30, 50, 70, 100 and 120 kg live weight with two probing instruments (Krautkramer USM2, Combison 310) at three sites along the back. The measurements were examined as predictors of the proportion of valuable cuts (part dissection) and estimated lean concentration (at 100 and 120 kg live weight).

The standard deviations for proportion of valuable cuts (after correcting for sex effects) were 24·8, 26·7, 23·4, 27·1 and 29·4 g/kg at 30, 50, 70, 100 and 120 kg. Residual s.d. for predicting proportion of valuable cuts from live weight and ultrasonic probes (Combison, quotient fat to muscle area) were 190, 20·9, 19·3, 213 and 19·6. For the USM2, the residual s.d.s were 19·2, 26·3, 19·9, 25·1 and 24·6. Thus the Combison probe provided a better prediction of proportion of valuable cuts. The standard deviations of estimated lean concentration as determined by a Fat-O-Meater reflectance probe were 28·9 and 39·3 at 100 and 120 kg live weight. The residual s.d.s from live weight and ultrasonic measurements were 15·4 and 19·2 for the Combison probe and 21·5 and 20·5 for the USM2 probe. If the estimated lean concentration is accepted as a selection objective the value of ultrasonic probes as criteria in selection indices will increase.

This study was designed to test whether Mucuna pruriens, a natural source of l-dihydroxyphenylalanine (l-DOPA, a dopamine precursor) feeding, can influence development and reproductive conditions in the high food value bird, Japanese quail, Coturnix coturnix japonica. Experiments were performed in both male and female Japanese quail. One-week-old quail chicks were divided into three groups of 36 birds each. Group I was provided with normal diet and served as control. Group II was provided with food mixed with l-DOPA (50 mg/15 g food) and Group III was provided with food mixed with M. pruriens seed powder (480 g/kg food). At the age of 3 weeks (when birds were sexually distinguished) Group I was divided into two sub-groups IA (male) and IB (female) of six birds each. Similarly, Groups II and III were sub-divided into IIA (male), IIB (female) and IIIA (male), IIIB (female), respectively, of six birds each. Observations were made up to the age of 5 weeks. Male experimental groups (IIA and IIIA) showed significantly increased testicular activity, cloacal gland volume, body weight (BW), plasma testosterone and LH level in comparison to control (IA). Similarly female experimental groups (IIB and IIIB) showed significantly greater weight of reproductive organs (uterus, ovary, oviduct and ovarian follicle), BW, egg weight and size and number of follicles. On the other hand, plasma prolactin level was significantly low in comparison to control (IB). Results suggest that M. pruriens is a rich natural source of l-DOPA and the development and reproduction in Japanese quail might be associated with the dopaminergic system of the brain.

Golden hamsters of one common laboratory strain had a high incidence of hydrocephalus internus. When a severity score of hydrocephalus was used, a major autosomal recessive locus could be identified. However, when a binary score (hydrocephalus, no hydrocephalus) was used, no such major locus could be detected and results of test matings were not consistent with Mendelian inheritance. Golden hamsters with severe forms of hydrocephalus had a dorsally compressed and ventrally intact hippocampus. Implications for the behavior and well-being of affected hamsters are unknown but researchers using this strain should be aware of the likely presence of hydrocephalus.

Sows kept outdoors are traditionally fed a compound diet, in the form of a-large biscuit, which is spread on the ground over a wide area to try to minimise bullying. They can be kept in several separate groups, divided by electric fencing, each group containing sows at a similar stage of pregnancy. The use of a computer controlled feeder would allow the sows to be kept as one dynamic group and allow food intake to be controlled on an individual or group basis. Also, normal pelleted food can be used in such a machine. Bulky feeds are playing an increasing role in the diet of outdoor sows, and it was decided to investigate the use of an electronically controlled feeder to supply a compound feed to balance grazed fodder beet.
