We consider finite simple graphs. Given a graph H and a positive integer $n,$ the Turán number of H for the order $n,$ denoted $\mathrm {ex}(n,H),$ is the maximum size of a graph of order n not containing H as a subgraph. Erdős asked: ‘For which graphs H is it true that every graph on n vertices and $\mathrm {ex}(n,H)+1$ edges contains at least two H’s? Perhaps this is always true.’ We solve this problem in the negative by proving that for every integer $k\ge 4$ there exists a graph H of order k and at least two orders n such that there exists a graph of order n and size $\mathrm {ex}(n,H)+1$ which contains exactly one copy of $H.$ Denote by $C_4$ the $4$ -cycle. We also prove that for every integer n with $6\le n\le 11$ there exists a graph of order n and size $\mathrm {ex}(n,C_4)+1$ which contains exactly one copy of $C_4,$ but, for $n=12$ or $n=13,$ the minimum number of copies of $C_4$ in a graph of order n and size $\mathrm {ex}(n,C_4)+1$ is two.

Let $p=3n+1$ be a prime with $n\in \mathbb {N}=\{0,1,2,\ldots \}$ and let $g\in \mathbb {Z}$ be a primitive root modulo p. Let $0<a_1<\cdots <a_n<p$ be all the cubic residues modulo p in the interval $(0,p)$ . Then clearly the sequence $a_1 \bmod p,\, a_2 \bmod p,\ldots , a_n \bmod p$ is a permutation of the sequence $g^3 \bmod p,\,g^6 \bmod p,\ldots , g^{3n} \bmod p$ . We determine the sign of this permutation.

Merca [‘Congruence identities involving sums of odd divisors function’, Proc. Rom. Acad. Ser. A Math. Phys. Tech. Sci. Inf. Sci.22(2) (2021), 119–125] posed three conjectures on congruences for specific convolutions of a sum of odd divisor functions with a generating function for generalised m-gonal numbers. Extending Merca’s work, we complete the proof of these conjectures.

Let $f(x)\in \mathbb {Z}[x]$ be a nonconstant polynomial. Let $n\ge 1, k\ge 2$ and c be integers. An integer a is called an f-exunit in the ring $\mathbb {Z}_n$ of residue classes modulo n if $\gcd (f(a),n)=1$ . We use the principle of cross-classification to derive an explicit formula for the number ${\mathcal N}_{k,f,c}(n)$ of solutions $(x_1,\ldots ,x_k)$ of the congruence $x_1+\cdots +x_k\equiv c\pmod n$ with all $x_i$ being f-exunits in the ring $\mathbb {Z}_n$ . This extends a recent result of Anand et al. [‘On a question of f-exunits in $\mathbb {Z}/{n\mathbb {Z}}$ ’, Arch. Math. (Basel)116 (2021), 403–409]. We derive a more explicit formula for ${\mathcal N}_{k,f,c}(n)$ when $f(x)$ is linear or quadratic.

Let $\mathcal {P}_s(n)$ denote the nth s-gonal number. We consider the equation

for integers $n,s,y$ and m. All solutions to this equation are known for $m>2$ and $s \in \{3,5,6,8,20 \}$ . We consider the case $s=10$ , that of decagonal numbers. Using a descent argument and the modular method, we prove that the only decagonal number greater than 1 expressible as a perfect mth power with $m>1$ is $\mathcal {P}_{10}(3) = 3^3$ .

Using a method due to Rieger [‘Remark on a paper of Stux concerning squarefree numbers in non-linear sequences’, Pacific J. Math.78(1) (1978), 241–242], we prove that the Piatetski-Shapiro sequence defined by $\{\lfloor n^c \rfloor : n\in \mathbb {N}\}$ contains infinitely many consecutive square-free integers whenever $1<c<3/2$ .

Cogdell et al. [‘Evaluating the Mahler measure of linear forms via Kronecker limit formulas on complex projective space’, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. (2021), to appear] developed infinite series representations for the logarithmic Mahler measure of a complex linear form with four or more variables. We establish the case of three variables by bounding an integral with integrand involving the random walk probability density $a\int _0^\infty tJ_0(at) \prod _{m=0}^2 J_0(r_m t)\,dt$ , where $J_0$ is the order-zero Bessel function of the first kind and a and $r_m$ are positive real numbers. To facilitate our proof we develop an alternative description of the integral’s asymptotic behaviour at its known points of divergence. As a computational aid for numerical experiments, an algorithm to calculate these series is presented in the appendix.

Motivated by a famous question of Lehmer about the Mahler measure, we study and solve its analytic analogue.

Let R be a ring with identity of characteristic two and G a nontrivial torsion group. We show that if the units in the group ring $RG$ are all trivial, then G must be cyclic of order two or three. We also consider the case where R is a commutative ring with identity of odd prime characteristic and G is a nontrivial locally finite group. We show that in this case, if the units in $RG$ are all trivial, then G must be cyclic of order two. These results improve on a result of Herman et al. [‘Trivial units for group rings with G-adapted coefficient rings’, Canad. Math. Bull.48(1) (2005), 80–89].

We show that every graded ideal of a Leavitt path algebra is graded isomorphic to a Leavitt path algebra. It is known that a graded ideal I of a Leavitt path algebra is isomorphic to the Leavitt path algebra of a graph, known as the generalised hedgehog graph, which is defined based on certain sets of vertices uniquely determined by I. However, this isomorphism may not be graded. We show that replacing the short ‘spines’ of the generalised hedgehog graph with possibly fewer, but then necessarily longer spines, we obtain a graph (which we call the porcupine graph) whose Leavitt path algebra is graded isomorphic to I. Our proof can be adapted to show that, for every closed gauge-invariant ideal J of a graph $C^*$ -algebra, there is a gauge-invariant $*$ -isomorphism mapping the graph $C^*$ -algebra of the porcupine graph of J onto $J.$

We introduce ‘generalised higher-rank k-graphs’ as a class of categories equipped with a notion of size. They extend not only higher-rank k-graphs, but also the Levi categories introduced by the first author as a categorical setting for graphs of groups. We prove that examples of generalised higher-rank k-graphs can be constructed using Zappa–Szép products of groupoids and higher-rank graphs.

Similarly to the Frobenius–Schur indicator of irreducible characters, we consider higher Frobenius–Schur indicators $\nu _{p^n}(\chi ) = |G|^{-1} \sum _{g \in G} \chi (g^{p^n})$ for primes p and $n \in \mathbb {N}$ , where G is a finite group and $\chi $ is a generalised character of G. These invariants give answers to interesting questions in representation theory. In particular, we give several characterisations of groups via higher Frobenius–Schur indicators.

In this paper, we study the structure of finite groups $G=AB$ which are a weakly mutually $sn$ -permutable product of the subgroups A and B, that is, A permutes with every subnormal subgroup of B containing $A \cap B$ and B permutes with every subnormal subgroup of A containing $A \cap B$ . We obtain generalisations of known results on mutually $sn$ -permutable products.

A subgroup H of a group G is said to be contranormal in G if the normal closure of H in G is equal to G. In this paper, we consider groups whose nonmodular subgroups (of infinite rank) are contranormal.

We establish a family of q-supercongruences modulo the cube of a cyclotomic polynomial for truncated basic hypergeometric series. This confirms a weaker form of a conjecture of the present authors. Our proof employs a very-well-poised Karlsson–Minton type summation due to Gasper, together with the ‘creative microscoping’ method introduced by the first author in recent joint work with Zudilin.

Generalising the concept of injectivity, we study the notion of $\varphi $ -injectivity for dual Banach algebras. It provides a framework for studying $\varphi $ -amenability of enveloping dual Banach algebras.

We expand upon work from many hands on the decomposition of nuclear maps. Such maps can be characterised by their ability to be approximately written as the composition of maps to and from matrices. Under certain conditions (such as quasidiagonality), we can find a decomposition whose maps behave nicely, by preserving multiplication up to an arbitrary degree of accuracy and being constructed from order-zero maps (as in the definition of nuclear dimension). We investigate these conditions and relate them to a W*-analogue.

Many bundle gerbes are either infinite-dimensional, or finite-dimensional but built using submersions that are far from being fibre bundles. Murray and Stevenson [‘A note on bundle gerbes and infinite-dimensionality’, J. Aust. Math. Soc.90(1) (2011), 81–92] proved that gerbes on simply-connected manifolds, built from finite-dimensional fibre bundles with connected fibres, always have a torsion $DD$ -class. I prove an analogous result for a wide class of gerbes built from principal bundles, relaxing the requirements on the fundamental group of the base and the connected components of the fibre, allowing both to be nontrivial. This has consequences for possible models for basic gerbes, the classification of crossed modules of finite-dimensional Lie groups, the coefficient Lie-2-algebras for higher gauge theory on principal 2-bundles and finite-dimensional twists of topological K-theory.
