We consider numbers and sizes of independent sets in graphs with minimum degree at least d. In particular, we investigate which of these graphs yield the maximum numbers of independent sets of different sizes, and which yield the largest random independent sets. We establish a strengthened form of a conjecture of Galvin concerning the first of these topics.

A partial Steiner (n,r,l)-system is an r-uniform hypergraph on n vertices in which every set of l vertices is contained in at most one edge. A partial Steiner (n,r,l)-system is complete if every set of l vertices is contained in exactly one edge. In a hypergraph , the independence number α() denotes the maximum size of a set of vertices in containing no edge. In this article we prove the following. Given integers r,l such that r ≥ 2l − 1 ≥ 3, we prove that there exists a partial Steiner (n,r,l)-system such that

We prove results about the Lp-almost-periodicity of convolutions. One of these follows from a simple but rather general lemma about approximating a sum of functions in Lp, and gives a very short proof of a theorem of Green that if A and B are subsets of {1,. . .,N} of sizes αN and βN then A+B contains an arithmetic progression of length at least

The discrete cube {0, 1}d is a fundamental combinatorial structure. A subcube of {0, 1}d is a subset of 2k of its points formed by fixing k coordinates and allowing the remaining d − k to vary freely. This paper is concerned with patterns of intersections among subcubes of the discrete cube. Two sample questions along these lines are as follows: given a family of subcubes in which no r + 1 of them have non-empty intersection, how many pairwise intersections can we have? How many subcubes can we have if among them there are no k which have non-empty intersection and no l which are pairwise disjoint?

These questions are naturally expressed using intersection graphs. The intersection graph of a family of sets has one vertex for each set in the family with two vertices being adjacent if the corresponding subsets intersect. Let $\I(n,d)$ be the set of all n vertex graphs which can be represented as the intersection graphs of subcubes in {0, 1}d. With this notation our first question above asks for the largest number of edges in a Kr+1-free graph in $\I(n,d)$. As such it is a Turán-type problem. We answer this question asymptotically for some ranges of r and d. More precisely we show that if $(k+1)2^{\lfloor\frac{d}{k+1}\rfloor}<n\leq k2^{\lfloor\frac{d}{k}\rfloor}$ for some integer k ≥ 2 then the maximum edge density is $\bigl(1-\frac{1}{k}-o(1)\bigr)$ provided that n is not too close to the lower limit of the range.

The second question can be thought of as a Ramsey-type problem. The maximum such n can be defined in the same way as the usual Ramsey number but only considering graphs which are in $\I(n,d)$. We give bounds for this maximum n mainly concentrating on the case that l is fixed, and make some comparisons with the usual Ramsey number.

One of the first graph-theoretical problems to be given serious attention (in the 1950s) was the decision whether a given integer sequence is equal to the degree sequence of a simple graph (or graphical, for short). One method to solve this problem is the greedy algorithm of Havel and Hakimi, which is based on the swap operation. Another, closely related question is to find a sequence of swap operations to transform one graphical realization into another of the same degree sequence. This latter problem has received particular attention in the context of rapidly mixing Markov chain approaches to uniform sampling of all possible realizations of a given degree sequence. (This becomes a matter of interest in the context of the study of large social networks, for example.) Previously there were only crude upper bounds on the shortest possible length of such swap sequences between two realizations. In this paper we develop formulae (Gallai-type identities) for the swap-distances of any two realizations of simple undirected or directed degree sequences. These identities considerably improve the known upper bounds on the swap-distances.

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a set of connected graphs. A graph G is said to be $\mathcal{H}$-free if G does not contain any element of $\mathcal{H}$ as an induced subgraph. Let $\mathcal{F}_{k}(\mathcal{H})$ be the set of k-connected $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs. When we study the relationship between forbidden subgraphs and a certain graph property, we often allow a finite exceptional set of graphs. But if the symmetric difference of $\mathcal{F}_{k}(\mathcal{H}_{1})$ and $\mathcal{F}_{k}(\mathcal{H}_{2})$ is finite and we allow a finite number of exceptions, no graph property can distinguish them. Motivated by this observation, we study when we obtain a finite symmetric difference. In this paper, our main aim is the following. If $|\mathcal{H}|\leq 3$ and the symmetric difference of $\mathcal{F}_{1}(\{H\})$ and $\mathcal{F}_{1}(\mathcal{H})$ is finite, then either $H\in \mathcal{H}$ or $|\mathcal{H}|=3$ and H=C3. Furthermore, we prove that if the symmetric difference of $\mathcal{F}_{k}(\{H_{1}\})$ and $\mathcal{F}_{k}(\{H_{2}\})$ is finite, then H1=H2.

A colouring of a graph G is called distinguishing if its stabilizer in Aut G is trivial. It has been conjectured that, if every automorphism of a locally finite graph moves infinitely many vertices, then there is a distinguishing 2-colouring. We study properties of random 2-colourings of locally finite graphs and show that the stabilizer of such a colouring is almost surely nowhere dense in Aut G and a null set with respect to the Haar measure on the automorphism group. We also investigate random 2-colourings in several classes of locally finite graphs where the existence of a distinguishing 2-colouring has already been established. It turns out that in all of these cases a random 2-colouring is almost surely distinguishing.

This work studies the typical behaviour of random integer-valued Lipschitz functions on expander graphs with sufficiently good expansion. We consider two families of functions: M-Lipschitz functions (functions which change by at most M along edges) and integer-homomorphisms (functions which change by exactly 1 along edges). We prove that such functions typically exhibit very small fluctuations. For instance, we show that a uniformly chosen M-Lipschitz function takes only M+1 values on most of the graph, with a double exponential decay for the probability of taking other values.

A graph is called universal for a given graph class (or, equivalently, -universal) if it contains a copy of every graph in as a subgraph. The construction of sparse universal graphs for various classes has received a considerable amount of attention. There is particular interest in tight -universal graphs, that is, graphs whose number of vertices is equal to the largest number of vertices in a graph from . Arguably, the most studied case is that when is some class of trees. In this work, we are interested in (n,Δ), the class of all n-vertex trees with maximum degree at most Δ. We show that every n-vertex graph satisfying certain natural expansion properties is (n,Δ)-universal. Our methods also apply to the case when Δ is some function of n. Since random graphs are known to be good expanders, our result implies, in particular, that there exists a positive constant c such that the random graph G(n,cn−1/3log2n) is asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) universal for (n,O(1)). Moreover, a corresponding result holds for the random regular graph of degree cn2/3log2n. Another interesting consequence is the existence of locally sparse n-vertex (n,Δ)-universal graphs. For example, we show that one can (randomly) construct n-vertex (n,O(1))-universal graphs with clique number at most five. This complements the construction of Bhatt, Chung, Leighton and Rosenberg (1989), whose (n,Δ)-universal graphs with merely O(n) edges contain large cliques of size Ω(Δ). Finally, we show that random graphs are robustly (n,Δ)-universal in the context of the Maker–Breaker tree-universality game.

Böttcher, Schacht and Taraz (Math. Ann., 2009) gave a condition on the minimum degree of a graph G on n vertices that ensures G contains every r-chromatic graph H on n vertices of bounded degree and of bandwidth o(n), thereby proving a conjecture of Bollobás and Komlós (Combin. Probab. Comput., 1999). We strengthen this result in the case when H is bipartite. Indeed, we give an essentially best-possible condition on the degree sequence of a graph G on n vertices that forces G to contain every bipartite graph H on n vertices of bounded degree and of bandwidth o(n). This also implies an Ore-type result. In fact, we prove a much stronger result where the condition on G is relaxed to a certain robust expansion property. Our result also confirms the bipartite case of a conjecture of Balogh, Kostochka and Treglown concerning the degree sequence of a graph which forces a perfect H-packing.

A perfect Kt-matching in a graph G is a spanning subgraph consisting of vertex-disjoint copies of Kt. A classic theorem of Hajnal and Szemerédi states that if G is a graph of order n with minimum degree δ(G) ≥ (t − 1)n/t and t|n, then G contains a perfect Kt-matching. Let G be a t-partite graph with vertex classes V1, …, Vt each of size n. We show that, for any γ > 0, if every vertex x ∈ Vi is joined to at least $\bigl ((t-1)/t + \gamma \bigr )n$ vertices of Vj for each j ≠ i, then G contains a perfect Kt-matching, provided n is large enough. Thus, we verify a conjecture of Fischer [6] asymptotically. Furthermore, we consider a generalization to hypergraphs in terms of the codegree.

A property of finite graphs is called non-deterministically testable if it has a ‘certificate’ such that once the certificate is specified, its correctness can be verified by random local testing. In this paper we study certificates that consist of one or more unary and/or binary relations on the nodes, in the case of dense graphs. Using the theory of graph limits, we prove that non-deterministically testable properties are also deterministically testable.

Erdős asked in 1962 about the value of f(n,k,l), the minimum number of k-cliques in a graph with order n and independence number less than l. The case (k,l)=(3,3) was solved by Lorden. Here we solve the problem (for all large n) for (3,l) with 4 ≤ l ≤ 7 and (k,3) with 4 ≤ k ≤ 7. Independently, Das, Huang, Ma, Naves and Sudakov resolved the cases (k,l)=(3,4) and (4,3).

Given a set $A\subset\mathbb{Z}_{N}$, we say that a function $f\colon A \to \mathbb{Z}_{N}$ is a Freiman homomorphism if f(a)+f(b)=f(c)+f(d) whenever a,b,c,d ∈ A satisfy a+b=c+d. This notion was introduced by Freiman in the 1970s, and plays an important role in the field of additive combinatorics. We say that A is linear if the only Freiman homomorphisms are functions of the form f(x) = ax+b.

Suppose the elements of A are chosen independently at random, each with probability p. We shall look at the following question: For which values of p=p(N) is A linear with high probability as N → ∞? We show that if p=(2logN − ω(N))1/3N−2/3, where ω(N) → ∞ as N → ∞, then A is not linear with high probability, whereas if p=N−1/2+ε for any ε>0 then A is linear with high probability.

We consider the problem of sums of dilates in groups of prime order. It is well known that sets with small density and small sumset in p behave like integer sets. Thus, given A ⊂ p of sufficiently small density, it is straightforward to show that

We show that any n-vertex complete graph with edges coloured with three colours contains a set of at most four vertices such that the number of the neighbours of these vertices in one of the colours is at least 2n/3. The previous best value, proved by Erdős, Faudree, Gould, Gyárfás, Rousseau and Schelp in 1989, is 22. It is conjectured that three vertices suffice.

We study the number of edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles one can guarantee in a sufficiently large graph G on n vertices with minimum degree δ=(1/2+α)n. For any constant α>0, we give an optimal answer in the following sense: let regeven(n,δ) denote the degree of the largest even-regular spanning subgraph one can guarantee in a graph on n vertices with minimum degree δ. Then the number of edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles we find equals regeven(n,δ)/2. The value of regeven(n,δ) is known for infinitely many values of n and δ. We also extend our results to graphs G of minimum degree δ ≥ n/2, unless G is close to the extremal constructions for Dirac's theorem. Our proof relies on a recent and very general result of Kühn and Osthus on Hamilton decomposition of robustly expanding regular graphs.

We study cross-graph charging schemes for graphs drawn in the plane. These are charging schemes where charge is moved across vertices of different graphs. Such methods have recently been used to obtain various properties of triangulations that are embedded in a fixed set of points in the plane. We generalize this method to obtain results for various other types of graphs that are embedded in the plane. Specifically, we obtain a new bound of O*(187.53N) (where the O*(⋅) notation hides polynomial factors) for the maximum number of crossing-free straight-edge graphs that can be embedded in any specific set of N points in the plane (improving upon the previous best upper bound 207.85N in Hoffmann, Schulz, Sharir, Sheffer, Tóth and Welzl [14]). We also derive upper bounds for numbers of several other types of plane graphs (such as connected and bi-connected plane graphs), and obtain various bounds on the expected vertex-degrees in graphs that are uniformly chosen from the set of all crossing-free straight-edge graphs that can be embedded in a specific point set.

We then apply the cross-graph charging-scheme method to graphs that allow certain types of crossings. Specifically, we consider graphs with no set of k pairwise crossing edges (more commonly known as k-quasi-planar graphs). For k=3 and k=4, we prove that, for any set S of N points in the plane, the number of graphs that have a straight-edge k-quasi-planar embedding over S is only exponential in N.

The mean weight of a cycle in an edge-weighted graph is the sum of the cycle's edge weights divided by the cycle's length. We study the minimum mean-weight cycle on the complete graph on n vertices, with random i.i.d. edge weights drawn from an exponential distribution with mean 1. We show that the probability of the min mean weight being at most c/n tends to a limiting function of c which is analytic for c ≤ 1/e, discontinuous at c = 1/e, and equal to 1 for c > 1/e. We further show that if the min mean weight is ≤ 1/(en), then the length of the relevant cycle is Θp(1) (i.e., it has a limiting probability distribution which does not scale with n), but that if the min mean weight is > 1/(en), then the relevant cycle almost always has mean weight (1 + o(1))/(en) and length at least (2/π2 − o (1)) log2n log log n.

We generalize Reimer's Inequality [6] (a.k.a. the BKR Inequality or the van den Berg–Kesten Conjecture [1]) to the setting of finite distributive lattices.
