We obtain a criterion for an analytic subset of a Euclidean space to contain points of differentiability of a typical Lipschitz function: namely, that it cannot be covered by countably many sets, each of which is closed and purely unrectifiable (has a zero-length intersection with every $C^1$ curve). Surprisingly, we establish that any set failing this criterion witnesses the opposite extreme of typical behaviour: in any such coverable set, a typical Lipschitz function is everywhere severely non-differentiable.

One of the central questions in Ramsey theory asks how small the largest clique and independent set in a graph on N vertices can be. By the celebrated result of Erdős from 1947, a random graph on N vertices with edge probability $1/2$ contains no clique or independent set larger than $2\log _2 N$ , with high probability. Finding explicit constructions of graphs with similar Ramsey-type properties is a famous open problem. A natural approach is to construct such graphs using algebraic tools.

Say that an r-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal {H}$ is algebraic of complexity $(n,d,m)$ if the vertices of $\mathcal {H}$ are elements of $\mathbb {F}^{n}$ for some field $\mathbb {F}$ , and there exist m polynomials $f_1,\dots ,f_m:(\mathbb {F}^{n})^{r}\rightarrow \mathbb {F}$ of degree at most d such that the edges of $\mathcal {H}$ are determined by the zero-patterns of $f_1,\dots ,f_m$ . The aim of this paper is to show that if an algebraic graph (or hypergraph) of complexity $(n,d,m)$ has good Ramsey properties, then at least one of the parameters $n,d,m$ must be large.

In 2001, Rónyai, Babai and Ganapathy considered the bipartite variant of the Ramsey problem and proved that if G is an algebraic graph of complexity $(n,d,m)$ on N vertices, then either G or its complement contains a complete balanced bipartite graph of size $\Omega _{n,d,m}(N^{1/(n+1)})$ . We extend this result by showing that such G contains either a clique or an independent set of size $N^{\Omega (1/ndm)}$ and prove similar results for algebraic hypergraphs of constant complexity. We also obtain a polynomial regularity lemma for r-uniform algebraic hypergraphs that are defined by a single polynomial that might be of independent interest. Our proofs combine algebraic, geometric and combinatorial tools.

Consider a reductive linear algebraic group G acting linearly on a polynomial ring S over an infinite field; key examples are the general linear group, the symplectic group, the orthogonal group, and the special linear group, with the classical representations as in Weyl’s book: For the general linear group, consider a direct sum of copies of the standard representation and copies of the dual; in the other cases, take copies of the standard representation. The invariant rings in the respective cases are determinantal rings, rings defined by Pfaffians of alternating matrices, symmetric determinantal rings and the Plücker coordinate rings of Grassmannians; these are the classical invariant rings of the title, with $S^G\subseteq S$ being the natural embedding.

Over a field of characteristic zero, a reductive group is linearly reductive, and it follows that the invariant ring $S^G$ is a pure subring of S, equivalently, $S^G$ is a direct summand of S as an $S^G$-module. Over fields of positive characteristic, reductive groups are typically no longer linearly reductive. We determine, in the positive characteristic case, precisely when the inclusion $S^G\subseteq S$ is pure. It turns out that if $S^G\subseteq S$ is pure, then either the invariant ring $S^G$ is regular or the group G is linearly reductive.

We prove that the coherent cohomology of a proper morphism of noetherian schemes can be made arbitrarily $p$-divisible by passage to proper covers (for a fixed prime $p$). Under some extra conditions, we also show that $p$-torsion can be killed by passage to proper covers. These results are motivated by the desire to understand rational singularities in mixed characteristic, and have applications in $p$-adic Hodge theory.

We develop a theory of parabolic induction and restriction functors relating modules over Coulomb branch algebras, in the sense of Braverman-Finkelberg-Nakajima. Our functors generalize Bezrukavnikov-Etingof’s induction and restriction functors for Cherednik algebras, but their definition uses different tools.

After this general definition, we focus on quiver gauge theories attached to a quiver $\Gamma $. The induction and restriction functors allow us to define a categorical action of the corresponding symmetric Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak {g}_{\Gamma }$ on category $ \mathcal {O}$ for these Coulomb branch algebras. When $ \Gamma $ is of Dynkin type, the Coulomb branch algebras are truncated shifted Yangians and quantize generalized affine Grassmannian slices. Thus, we regard our action as a categorification of the geometric Satake correspondence.

To establish this categorical action, we define a new class of ‘flavoured’ KLRW algebras, which are similar to the diagrammatic algebras originally constructed by the second author for the purpose of tensor product categorification. We prove an equivalence between the category of Gelfand-Tsetlin modules over a Coulomb branch algebra and the modules over a flavoured KLRW algebra. This equivalence relates the categorical action by induction and restriction functors to the usual categorical action on modules over a KLRW algebra.

For each prime p, we show that there exist geometrically simple abelian varieties A over ${\mathbb Q}$ with . Specifically, for any prime $N\equiv 1 \ \pmod p$ , let $A_f$ be an optimal quotient of $J_0(N)$ with a rational point P of order p, and let $B = A_f/\langle P \rangle $ . Then the number of positive integers $d \leq X$ with is $ \gg X/\log X$ , where $\widehat B_d$ is the dual of the dth quadratic twist of B. We prove this more generally for abelian varieties of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_2$ -type with a p-isogeny satisfying a mild technical condition. In the special case of elliptic curves, we give stronger results, including many examples where for an explicit positive proportion of integers d.

In this article we prove the explicit Mordell Conjecture for large families of curves. In addition, we introduce a method, of easy application, to compute all rational points on curves of quite general shape and increasing genus. The method bases on some explicit and sharp estimates for the height of such rational points, and the bounds are small enough to successfully implement a computer search. As an evidence of the simplicity of its application, we present a variety of explicit examples and explain how to produce many others. In the appendix our method is compared in detail to the classical method of Manin–Demjanenko and the analysis of our explicit examples is carried to conclusion.

We study in $\mathbb {R}^{3+1}$ a system of nonlinearly coupled Klein-Gordon equations under the null condition, with (possibly vanishing) mass varying in the interval $[0, 1]$. Our goal is three-fold, which extends the results in the earlier work of [5, 3]: 1) we want to establish the global well-posedness result to the system that is uniform in terms of the mass parameter (i.e., the smallness of the initial data is independent of the mass parameter); 2) we want to obtain a unified pointwise decay result for the solution to the system, in the sense that the solution decays more like a wave component (independent of the mass parameter) in a certain range of time, while the solution decays as a Klein-Gordon component with a factor depending on the mass parameter in the other part of the time range; 3) the solution to the Klein-Gordon system converges to the solution to the corresponding wave system in a certain sense when the mass parameter goes to 0. In order to achieve these goals, we will rely on both the flat and hyperboloidal foliation of the spacetime and prove a mass-independent $L^2$–type energy estimate for the Klein-Gordon equations with possibly vanishing mass. In addition, the case of the Klein-Gordon equations with certain restricted large data is discussed.

We construct infinitely many compact, smooth 4-manifolds which are homotopy equivalent to $S^{2}$ but do not admit a spine (that is, a piecewise linear embedding of $S^{2}$ that realizes the homotopy equivalence). This is the remaining case in the existence problem for codimension-2 spines in simply connected manifolds. The obstruction comes from the Heegaard Floer $d$ invariants.

Let $G$ be a finite almost simple group. It is well known that $G$ can be generated by three elements, and in previous work we showed that 6 generators suffice for all maximal subgroups of $G$. In this paper, we consider subgroups at the next level of the subgroup lattice—the so-called second maximal subgroups. We prove that with the possible exception of some families of rank 1 groups of Lie type, the number of generators of every second maximal subgroup of $G$ is bounded by an absolute constant. We also show that such a bound holds without any exceptions if and only if there are only finitely many primes $r$ for which there is a prime power $q$ such that $(q^{r}-1)/(q-1)$ is prime. The latter statement is a formidable open problem in Number Theory. Applications to random generation and polynomial growth are also given.

A conic bundle is a contraction $X\to Z$ between normal varieties of relative dimension $1$ such that $-K_X$ is relatively ample. We prove a conjecture of Shokurov that predicts that if $X\to Z$ is a conic bundle such that X has canonical singularities and Z is $\mathbb {Q}$ -Gorenstein, then Z is always $\frac {1}{2}$ -lc, and the multiplicities of the fibres over codimension $1$ points are bounded from above by $2$ . Both values $\frac {1}{2}$ and $2$ are sharp. This is achieved by solving a more general conjecture of Shokurov on singularities of bases of lc-trivial fibrations of relative dimension $1$ with canonical singularities.

We prove that the sign of the Euler characteristic of arithmetic groups with the congruence subgroup property is determined by the profinite completion. In contrast, we construct examples showing that this is not true for the Euler characteristic itself and that the sign of the Euler characteristic is not profinite among general residually finite groups of type F. Our methods imply similar results for $\ell^2$ -torsion as well as a strong profiniteness statement for Novikov–Shubin invariants.

We identify the cohomology of the stable classifying space of homotopy automorphisms (relative to an embedded disk) of connected sums of ${\mathrm {S}^{k}} \times {\mathrm {S}^{l}}$, where $3 \le k < l \le 2k - 2$. The result is expressed in terms of Lie graph complex homology.

We introduce a holomorphic torsion invariant of log-Enriques surfaces of index two with cyclic quotient singularities of type $\frac {1}{4}(1,1)$ . The moduli space of such log-Enriques surfaces with k singular points is a modular variety of orthogonal type associated with a unimodular lattice of signature $(2,10-k)$ . We prove that the invariant, viewed as a function of the modular variety, is given by the Petersson norm of an explicit Borcherds product. We note that this torsion invariant is essentially the BCOV invariant in the complex dimension $2$ . As a consequence, the BCOV invariant in this case is not a birational invariant, unlike the Calabi-Yau case.

Let G be a connected reductive group, T a maximal torus of G, N the normalizer of T and $W=N/T$ the Weyl group of G. Let ${\mathfrak {g}}$ and ${\mathfrak {t}}$ be the Lie algebras of G and T. The affine variety $\mathfrak {car}={\mathfrak {t}}/\!/W$ of semisimple G-orbits of ${\mathfrak {g}}$ has a natural stratification

indexed by the set of G-conjugacy classes of Levi subgroups: the open stratum is the set of regular semisimple orbits and the closed stratum is the set of central orbits.

In [17], Rider considered the triangulated subcategory $D_{\mathrm {c}}^{\mathrm {b}}([{\mathfrak {g}}_{\mathrm {nil}}/G])^{\mathrm {Spr}}$ of $D_{\mathrm {c}}^{\mathrm {b}}([{\mathfrak {g}}_{\mathrm {nil}}/G])$ generated by the direct summand of the Springer sheaf. She proved that it is equivalent to the derived category of finitely generated dg modules over the smash product algebra ${\overline {\mathbb {Q}}_{\ell }}[W]\# H^{\bullet }_G(G/B)$ where $H^{\bullet }_G(G/B)$ is the G-equivariant cohomology of the flag variety. Notice that the later derived category is $D_{\mathrm {c}}^{\mathrm {b}}(\mathrm {B}(N))$ where $\mathrm {B}(N)=[\mathrm {Spec}(k)/N]$ is the classifying stack of N-torsors.

The aim of this paper is to understand geometrically and generalise Rider’s equivalence of categories: For each $\lambda $ we construct a cohomological correspondence inducing an equivalence of categories between $D_{\mathrm {c}}^{\mathrm {b}}([{\mathfrak {t}}_{\lambda }/N])$ and $D_{\mathrm {c}}^{\mathrm {b}}([{\mathfrak {g}}_{\lambda }/G])^{\mathrm {Spr}}$ .

We introduce a notion of complexity of diagrams (and, in particular, of objects and morphisms) in an arbitrary category, as well as a notion of complexity of functors between categories equipped with complexity functions. We discuss several examples of this new definition in categories of wide common interest such as finite sets, Boolean functions, topological spaces, vector spaces, semilinear and semialgebraic sets, graded algebras, affine and projective varieties and schemes, and modules over polynomial rings. We show that on one hand categorical complexity recovers in several settings classical notions of nonuniform computational complexity (such as circuit complexity), while on the other hand it has features that make it mathematically more natural. We also postulate that studying functor complexity is the categorical analog of classical questions in complexity theory about separating different complexity classes.

We prove that the rational cohomology group $H^{11}(\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,n})$ vanishes unless $g = 1$ and $n \geq 11$. We show furthermore that $H^k(\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,n})$ is pure Hodge–Tate for all even $k \leq 12$ and deduce that $\# \overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,n}(\mathbb {F}_q)$ is surprisingly well approximated by a polynomial in q. In addition, we use $H^{11}(\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{1,11})$ and its image under Gysin push-forward for tautological maps to produce many new examples of moduli spaces of stable curves with nonvanishing odd cohomology and nontautological algebraic cycle classes in Chow cohomology.

We prove three results concerning the existence of Bohr sets in threefold sumsets. More precisely, letting G be a countable discrete abelian group and $\phi _1, \phi _2, \phi _3: G \to G$ be commuting endomorphisms whose images have finite indices, we show that

1. (1) If $A \subset G$ has positive upper Banach density and $\phi _1 + \phi _2 + \phi _3 = 0$ , then $\phi _1(A) + \phi _2(A) + \phi _3(A)$ contains a Bohr set. This generalizes a theorem of Bergelson and Ruzsa in $\mathbb {Z}$ and a recent result of the first author.

2. (2) For any partition $G = \bigcup _{i=1}^r A_i$ , there exists an $i \in \{1, \ldots , r\}$ such that $\phi _1(A_i) + \phi _2(A_i) - \phi _2(A_i)$ contains a Bohr set. This generalizes a result of the second and third authors from $\mathbb {Z}$ to countable abelian groups.

3. (3) If $B, C \subset G$ have positive upper Banach density and $G = \bigcup _{i=1}^r A_i$ is a partition, $B + C + A_i$ contains a Bohr set for some $i \in \{1, \ldots , r\}$ . This is a strengthening of a theorem of Bergelson, Furstenberg and Weiss.

All results are quantitative in the sense that the radius and rank of the Bohr set obtained depends only on the indices $[G:\phi _j(G)]$ , the upper Banach density of A (in (1)), or the number of sets in the given partition (in (2) and (3)).

We show that there is a Borel graph on a standard Borel space of Borel chromatic number three that admits a Borel homomorphism to every analytic graph on a standard Borel space of Borel chromatic number at least three. Moreover, we characterize the Borel graphs on standard Borel spaces of vertex-degree at most two with this property and show that the analogous result for digraphs fails.
