We prove that if X is a complex projective K3 surface and $g>0$ , then there exist infinitely many families of curves of geometric genus g on X with maximal, i.e., g-dimensional, variation in moduli. In particular, every K3 surface contains a curve of geometric genus 1 which moves in a nonisotrivial family. This implies a conjecture of Huybrechts on constant cycle curves and gives an algebro-geometric proof of a theorem of Kobayashi that a K3 surface has no global symmetric differential forms.

We show that, for an arbitrary finite-dimensional quasi-reductive Lie superalgebra over ${\mathbb {C}}$ with a triangular decomposition and a character $\zeta $ of the nilpotent radical, the associated Backelin functor $\Gamma _\zeta $ sends Verma modules to standard Whittaker modules provided the latter exist. As a consequence, this gives a complete solution to the problem of determining the composition factors of the standard Whittaker modules in terms of composition factors of Verma modules in the category ${\mathcal {O}}$. In the case of the ortho-symplectic Lie superalgebras, we show that the Backelin functor $\Gamma _\zeta $ and its target category, respectively, categorify a q-symmetrizing map and the corresponding q-symmetrized Fock space associated with a quasi-split quantum symmetric pair of type $AIII$.

We construct, over any CM field, compatible systems of $l$-adic Galois representations that appear in the cohomology of algebraic varieties and have (for all $l$) algebraic monodromy groups equal to the exceptional group of type $E_{6}$.

Using the theory of cohomological invariants for algebraic stacks, we compute the Brauer group of the moduli stack of hyperelliptic curves ${\mathcal {H}}_g$ over any field of characteristic $0$. In positive characteristic, we compute the part of the Brauer group whose order is prime to the characteristic of the base field.

In 1999, Jacobson and Lehel conjectured that, for $k \geq 3$ , every k-regular Hamiltonian graph has cycles of $\Theta (n)$ many different lengths. This was further strengthened by Verstraëte, who asked whether the regularity can be replaced with the weaker condition that the minimum degree is at least $3$ . Despite attention from various researchers, until now, the best partial result towards both of these conjectures was a $\sqrt {n}$ lower bound on the number of cycle lengths. We resolve these conjectures asymptotically by showing that the number of cycle lengths is at least $n^{1-o(1)}$ .

We prove results about subshifts with linear (word) complexity, meaning that $\limsup \frac {p(n)}{n} < \infty $, where for every n, $p(n)$ is the number of n-letter words appearing in sequences in the subshift. Denoting this limsup by C, we show that when $C < \frac {4}{3}$, the subshift has discrete spectrum, that is, is measurably isomorphic to a rotation of a compact abelian group with Haar measure. We also give an example with $C = \frac {3}{2}$ which has a weak mixing measure. This partially answers an open question of Ferenczi, who asked whether $C = \frac {5}{3}$ was the minimum possible among such subshifts; our results show that the infimum in fact lies in $[\frac {4}{3}, \frac {3}{2}]$. All results are consequences of a general S-adic/substitutive structure proved when $C < \frac {4}{3}$.

In this paper, we study sample size thresholds for maximum likelihood estimation for tensor normal models. Given the model parameters and the number of samples, we determine whether, almost surely, (1) the likelihood function is bounded from above, (2) maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) exist, and (3) MLEs exist uniquely. We obtain a complete answer for both real and complex models. One consequence of our results is that almost sure boundedness of the log-likelihood function guarantees almost sure existence of an MLE. Our techniques are based on invariant theory and castling transforms.

In this paper, we prove a Clifford type inequality for the curve $X_{2,2,2,4}$, which is the intersection of a quartic and three general quadratics in $\mathbb {P}^5$. We thus prove a stronger Bogomolov–Gieseker inequality for characters of stable vector bundles and stable objects on Calabi–Yau complete intersection $X_{2,4}$. Applying the scheme proposed by Bayer, Bertram, Macrì, Stellari and Toda, we can construct an open subset of Bridgeland stability conditions on $X_{2,4}$.

We address primary decomposition conjectures for knot concordance groups, which predict direct sum decompositions into primary parts. We show that the smooth concordance group of topologically slice knots has a large subgroup for which the conjectures are true and there are infinitely many primary parts, each of which has infinite rank. This supports the conjectures for topologically slice knots. We also prove analogues for the associated graded groups of the bipolar filtration of topologically slice knots. Among ingredients of the proof, we use amenable $L^2$ -signatures, Ozsváth-Szabó d-invariants and Némethi’s result on Heegaard Floer homology of Seifert 3-manifolds. In an appendix, we present a general formulation of the notion of primary decomposition.

For families of smooth complex projective varieties, we show that normal functions arising from algebraically trivial cycle classes are algebraic and defined over the field of definition of the family. In particular, the zero loci of those functions are algebraic and defined over such a field of definition. This proves a conjecture of Charles.

We study smoothing of pencils of curves on surfaces with normal crossings. As a consequence we show that the canonical divisor of $\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,n}$ is not pseudoeffective in some range, implying that $\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{12,6}$, $\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{12,7}$, $\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{13,4}$ and $\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{14,3}$ are uniruled. We provide upper bounds for the Kodaira dimension of $\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{12,8}$ and $\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{16}$. We also show that the moduli space of $(4g+5)$-pointed hyperelliptic curves $\overline {\mathcal {H}}_{g,4g+5}$ is uniruled. Together with a recent result of Schwarz, this concludes the classification of moduli of pointed hyperelliptic curves with negative Kodaira dimension.

Aromatic B-series were introduced as an extension of standard Butcher-series for the study of volume-preserving integrators. It was proven with their help that the only volume-preserving B-series method is the exact flow of the differential equation. The question was raised whether there exists a volume-preserving integrator that can be expanded as an aromatic B-series. In this work, we introduce a new algebraic tool, called the aromatic bicomplex, similar to the variational bicomplex in variational calculus. We prove the exactness of this bicomplex and use it to describe explicitly the key object in the study of volume-preserving integrators: the aromatic forms of vanishing divergence. The analysis provides us with a handful of new tools to study aromatic B-series, gives insights on the process of integration by parts of trees, and allows to describe explicitly the aromatic B-series of a volume-preserving integrator. In particular, we conclude that an aromatic Runge–Kutta method cannot preserve volume.

Waldspurger’s formula gives an identity between the norm of a torus period and an $L$-function of the twist of an automorphic representation on GL(2). For any two Hecke characters of a fixed quadratic extension, one can consider the two torus periods coming from integrating one character against the automorphic induction of the other. Because the corresponding $L$-functions agree, (the norms of) these periods—which occur on different quaternion algebras—are closely related. In this paper, we give a direct proof of an explicit identity between the torus periods themselves.

In this note, we prove the logarithmic $p$-adic comparison theorem for open rigid analytic varieties. We prove that a smooth rigid analytic variety with a strict simple normal crossing divisor is locally $K(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B},1)$ (in a certain sense) with respect to $\mathbb{F}_{p}$-local systems and ramified coverings along the divisor. We follow Scholze’s method to produce a pro-version of the Faltings site and use this site to prove a primitive comparison theorem in our setting. After introducing period sheaves in our setting, we prove aforesaid comparison theorem.

We prove a version of Clifford’s theorem for metrized complexes. Namely, a metrized complex that carries a divisor of degree $2r$ and rank $r$ (for $0<r<g-1$) also carries a divisor of degree 2 and rank 1. We provide a structure theorem for hyperelliptic metrized complexes, and use it to classify divisors of degree bounded by the genus. We discuss a tropical version of Martens’ theorem for metric graphs.

In 2016, I solved a problem of de la Harpe from 2006: Is there a nondiscrete C$^{\ast }$-simple group? However the solution was not fully satisfactory, as the C$^{\ast }$-simple groups provided (and their operator algebras) are very close to discrete groups. All previously known examples are of this form. In this article I give yet another construction of nondiscrete C$^{\ast }$-simple groups. The statement in the title then follows. This in particular gives the first examples of nonelementary C$^{\ast }$-simple groups (in Wesolek’s sense).

We show that the mod p cohomology of a simple Shimura variety treated in Harris-Taylor’s book vanishes outside a certain nontrivial range after localizing at any non-Eisenstein ideal of the Hecke algebra. In cases of low dimensions, we show the vanishing outside the middle degree under a mild additional assumption.

We obtain a criterion for an analytic subset of a Euclidean space to contain points of differentiability of a typical Lipschitz function: namely, that it cannot be covered by countably many sets, each of which is closed and purely unrectifiable (has a zero-length intersection with every $C^1$ curve). Surprisingly, we establish that any set failing this criterion witnesses the opposite extreme of typical behaviour: in any such coverable set, a typical Lipschitz function is everywhere severely non-differentiable.

Faltings ringed topos, the keystone of Faltings’ approach to p-adic Hodge theory for a smooth variety over a local field, relies on the choice of an integral model, and its good properties depend on the (logarithmic) smoothness of this model. Inspired by Deligne’s approach to classical Hodge theory for singular varieties, we establish a cohomological descent result for the structural sheaf of Faltings topos, which makes it possible to extend Faltings’ approach to any integral model, that is, without any smoothness assumption. An essential ingredient of our proof is a variation of Bhatt–Scholze’s arc-descent of perfectoid rings.

One of the central questions in Ramsey theory asks how small the largest clique and independent set in a graph on N vertices can be. By the celebrated result of Erdős from 1947, a random graph on N vertices with edge probability $1/2$ contains no clique or independent set larger than $2\log _2 N$ , with high probability. Finding explicit constructions of graphs with similar Ramsey-type properties is a famous open problem. A natural approach is to construct such graphs using algebraic tools.

Say that an r-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal {H}$ is algebraic of complexity $(n,d,m)$ if the vertices of $\mathcal {H}$ are elements of $\mathbb {F}^{n}$ for some field $\mathbb {F}$ , and there exist m polynomials $f_1,\dots ,f_m:(\mathbb {F}^{n})^{r}\rightarrow \mathbb {F}$ of degree at most d such that the edges of $\mathcal {H}$ are determined by the zero-patterns of $f_1,\dots ,f_m$ . The aim of this paper is to show that if an algebraic graph (or hypergraph) of complexity $(n,d,m)$ has good Ramsey properties, then at least one of the parameters $n,d,m$ must be large.

In 2001, Rónyai, Babai and Ganapathy considered the bipartite variant of the Ramsey problem and proved that if G is an algebraic graph of complexity $(n,d,m)$ on N vertices, then either G or its complement contains a complete balanced bipartite graph of size $\Omega _{n,d,m}(N^{1/(n+1)})$ . We extend this result by showing that such G contains either a clique or an independent set of size $N^{\Omega (1/ndm)}$ and prove similar results for algebraic hypergraphs of constant complexity. We also obtain a polynomial regularity lemma for r-uniform algebraic hypergraphs that are defined by a single polynomial that might be of independent interest. Our proofs combine algebraic, geometric and combinatorial tools.
