The integral energy method has been used to study the nonlinear interactions of the large-scale coherent structure in a spatially developing round jet. The streamwise development of a jet is obtained in terms of the mean flow shear-layer momentum thickness, the wave-mode kinetic energy and the wave-mode phase angle. With the energy method, a system of partial differential equations is reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations. The nonlinear differential equations are solved with initial conditions which are given at the nozzle exit. It is shown that the initial wave-mode energy densities as well as the initial phase angles play a significant role in the streamwise evolution of the large-scale coherent wave modes and the mean flow.

In the two-dimensional sedimentation process beneath an inclined wall, the mixture of the participate and liquid phases is separated from the wall by a boundary layer of the clear liquid. This paper contains a simple mathematical model giving waves on the interface between the clear liquid and the mixture. These waves are caused by a discontinuity in the gradient of the tangential velocity of the clear liquid, across the interface. In the limiting case of small concentration of the particulate phase in the mixture, the model gives a dispersive wave running upward along the interface in the direction of the flow in the boundary layer. The effect of finite concentration is to introduce a damping.

In this paper, we consider nearshore rotational currents directly forced by unsteady multidirectional wave breaking. Scaling relationships, simplified analytical solutions, and asymptotic limits are developed for the maximum forced cross-shore and longshore velocities. In all cases, forced longshore velocities are considerably larger than cross-shore velocities. On longshore-uniform beaches, strong fluctuating velocities are found for (i) large waves; (ii) strong directional spreading; and (iii) short peak wave periods. When topographic inhomogeneities control longshore scales of wave breaking, overall scaling changes and the largest fluctuating velocities are found for ($a$) large waves; ($b$) long wave periods; and ($c$) topographic features that vary quickly in the longshore direction. The ratio of fluctuating rotational velocities to mean longshore current does not depend on the wave height or period, but instead on the bottom friction, slope, deep water wave angle, and details of the wave spectrum.

The effect of a uniform and parallel magnetic field upon the stability of a free shear layer of an electrically conducting fluid is investigated. The equations of the velocity and the magnetic disturbances are solved numerically and it is shown that the flow is stabilized with increasing magnetic field. When the magnetic field is expressed in terms of the parameter N (= M2/R2), where M is the Hartmann number and R is the Reynolds number, the lowest critical Reynolds number is caused by the two-dimensional disturbances. So long as 0 [les ] N [les ] 0·0092 the flow is unstable at all R. For 0·0092 < N [les ] 0·0233 the flow is unstable at 0 < R < Ruc where Ruc decreases as N increases. For 0·0233 < N < 0·0295 the flow is unstable at Rlc < R < Ruc where Rlc increases with N. Lastly for N > 0·0295 the flow is stable at all R. When the magnetic field is measured by M, the lowest critical Reynolds number is still due to the two-dimensional disturbances provided 0 [les ] M [les ] 0·52, and Rc is given by the corresponding Rlc. For M > 0·52, Rc is expressed as Rc = 5·8M, and the responsible disturbance is the three-dimensional one which propagates at angle cos−1(0·52/M) to the direction of the basic flow.

Laminar helically-symmetric gravity-driven thin-film flow down a helically-wound channel of rectangular cross-section is considered. We extend the work of Stokes et al. (Phys. Fluids, vol. 25 (8), 2013, 083103) and Lee et al. (Phys. Fluids, vol. 26 (4), 2014, 043302) to channels with arbitrary curvature and torsion or, equivalently, arbitrary curvature and slope. We use a non-orthogonal coordinate system and, remarkably, find an exact steady-state solution. We find that the free-surface shape and flow have a complicated dependence on the curvature, slope and flux down the channel. Moderate to large channel slope has a significant effect on the flow in the region of the channel near the inside wall, particularly when the curvature of the channel is large. This work has application to flow in static spiral particle separators used in mineral processing.

Since supersonic test facilities have tunnel noise that strongly influences boundary layer transition experiments, the determination of tunnel noise is of great significance to properly evaluate and interpret experimental results. The composition of tunnel noise, which consists of acoustic, entropy and vorticity modes, highly influences the boundary layer receptivity. The measurement of the separate modes is a major goal of ongoing research. In this study, the properties of stagnation point probes for a newly developed modal decomposition method for tunnel noise are investigated by direct numerical simulation. Pressure and heat flux responses of a stagnation point probe to various entropy and acoustic mode input functions are analysed to investigate how tunnel noise is perceived by corresponding sensor types. The interaction of the incident mode and the shock wave upstream of the probe is analysed and the resulting wave pattern in the subsonic region between shock wave and probe is evidenced. It is found that pure incident acoustic or entropy modes cause acoustic and entropy waves downstream of the shock wave whose strengths differ depending on the incident mode. The resulting wave pattern downstream of the shock wave is determined by postshock acoustic waves propagating bidirectionally between shock wave and probe. Formulating a model equation linking pressure and heat flux fluctuations to the initially caused postshock acoustic and entropy wave, a criterion for the applicability of stagnation point probes measuring pressure and heat flux fluctuations in the new modal decomposition method can be deduced: to distinguish between the incident mode types based on their pressure and heat flux signal the perception of initially generated entropy waves downstream of the shock wave by the heat flux sensor is crucial. The transfer function between entropy waves and heat flux is shown to have low pass filter characteristics and the cutoff Strouhal number could be estimated by control theory. The analysis of the frequency response to continuous incident waves corroborated this cutoff Strouhal number.

The generation of internal waves in a submarine rectangular trench by normally incident surface waves has been investigated through laboratory experiments and theory. A linear model was developed for small-amplitude, simple harmonic wave motions. In this model, the fluid outside the trench is homogeneous, and the fluid in the trench is composed of two homogeneous layers of different densities separated by a transition region of linear density variation; viscous dissipation is treated based on the assumption of a laminar boundary layer. In the experiments, the stratification in the trench was created using fresh water and salt water, and a scanning laser beam and detector system was used to measure the amplitude of internal waves. The study shows that, when the frequency of the surface waves corresponds to the natural frequency of internal waves, the amplitude of internal waves becomes large compared to the amplitude of surface waves. The natural frequency of oscillation of internal waves decreases as the thickness of the density interface increases and the depth of the lower fluid decreases. Two distinct classes of internal waves were observed, namely, standing internal waves when the lower fluid was deep, and travelling internal waves when the lower fluid was shallow. The linear model predicted the response curve for internal waves quite well in all the cases investigated. It was also found that the internal waves were strongly damped when the depth of the lower fluid was small compared to the wavelength of internal waves.

A thermally stratified internal hydraulic jump in a fresh water ambient, which has a temperature equal to or greater than 4 °C, is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The thermal jump solutions obtained using a nonlinear buoyancy function are compared with the density jump solutions obtained using a linear buoyancy function. The study reveals considerable difference between thermal and density jump behaviour in a range of temperature above 4 °C. The error of treating a thermal jump as a density jump is found to increase with Froude number and temperature difference and decrease with ambient temperature. Thermal jump-experiments are conducted at ambient water temperatures of 4 °C and 16 °C. The two sets of experiments have identical Froude number, Reynolds number and temperature difference. Experimental observations compare favourably with the thermal jump theory. The analysis of temperature fluctuations suggests that ambient temperature is also modifying the internal mixing characteristics of thermal jumps.

Solutions for inviscid rotating flow over a right circular cylinder of finite height are studied, and comparisons are made to quasi-geostrophic solutions. To study the combined effects of finite topography and the variation of the Coriolis parameter with latitude a steady inviscid model is used. The analytical solution consists of one part which is similar to the quasi-geostrophic solution that is driven by the potential vorticity anomaly over the topography, and another, similar to the solution of potential flow around a cylinder, that is driven by the matching conditions on the edge of the topography. When the characteristic Rossby wave speed is much larger than the background flow velocity, the transport over the topography is enhanced as the streamlines follow lines of constant background potential vorticity. For eastward flow, the Rossby wave drag can be very much larger than that predicted by quasi-geostrophic theory. The combined effects of finite height topography and time-dependence are studied in the inviscid initial value problem on the f-plane using the method of contour dynamics. The method is modified to handle finite topography. When the topography takes up most of the layer depth, a stable oscillation exists with all of the fluid which originates over the topography rotating around the topography. When the Rossby number is order one, a steady trapped vortex solution similar to the one described by Johnson (1978) may be reached.

Arnol'd's second stability theorem is proved for arbitrary perturbations of the potential vorticity field δq and the circulation(s) δγ. The formal stability condition is essentially the same as that for δγ ≡ 0, which is much easier to obtain. Similarly, the condition obtained assuming $\overline{\delta q} \equiv 0$ (the overbar denoting a horizontal average) is found to be also valid for $\overline{\delta q} \not\equiv 0$. It is argued that a Lyapunov functional that is extreme only on the sheet of constant Casimirs (and other integrals of motion) also proves stability for perturbations off the sheet, even though its second variation may not be sign definite for general perturbations. This conjecture is illustrated by means of a very simple mechanical problem: a point particle subject to the action of a central force. For the case of Phillips’ problem in a periodic channel, formal stability conditions on the isovortical sheet coincide with the criteria obtained from normal modes analysis.

Buoyant displacement flows of two miscible fluids in rectangular channels are studied, theoretically and experimentally. The scenario considered involves the displacement of a fluid by a slightly heavier one at nearly horizontal channel inclinations, where inertial effects are weak and laminar stratified flows may be expected. In the theoretical part, a lubrication approximation model is developed to simplify the displacement flow governing equations and furnish a semi-analytical solution for the heavy and light fluid flux functions. Three key dimensionless parameters govern the fluid flow motion, i.e. a buoyancy number, the viscosity ratio and the channel cross-section aspect ratio. When these parameters are specified, the reduced model can deliver the interface propagation in time, leading and trailing front heights, shapes and speeds, cross-sectional velocity fields, etc. In addition, the model can be exploited to provide various classifications such as single or multiple fronts as well as main displacement flow regimes at long times such as no sustained backflows, stationary interface flows and sustained backflows. Focusing on the variation of the buoyancy number, a large number of iso-viscous displacement experiments are performed in a square duct and the results are compared with those of the lubrication model. Qualitative displacement flow features observed in the theory and experiments are in good agreement, in particular, in terms of the main displacement flow regimes. The quantitative comparisons are also reasonable for small and moderate imposed displacement flow velocities. However, at large flow rates, a deviation of the experimental results from the model results is observed, which may be due to the presence of non-negligible inertial effects.

We consider the instantaneous release of a finite volume of fluid in a porous medium saturated with a second, immiscible fluid of different density. The resulting two-phase gravity current exhibits a rich array of behaviours due to both the residual trapping of fluid as the current recedes and the differing effects of surface tension between advancing and receding regions of the current. We develop a framework for the evolution of such a current with particular focus on the large-scale implications of the form of the constitutive relation between residual trapping and initial saturation. Pore-scale hysteresis within the current is represented by families of scanning curves relating capillary pressure and relative permeability to saturation. In the resulting vertically integrated model, all capillary effects are incorporated within specially defined saturation and flux functions specific to each region. In the long-time limit, when the height of the current and the saturations within it are low, the saturation and flux functions can be approximated by mathematically convenient power laws. If the trapping model is approximately linear at low saturations, the equations admit a similarity solution for the propagation rate and height profile of the late-time gravity current. We also solve the governing partial differential equation numerically for the nonlinear Land’s trapping model, which is commonly used in studies of two-phase flows. Our investigation suggests that for trapping relations for which the proportion of trapped to initial fluid saturation increases and tends to unity as the initial saturation decreases, both of which are properties of Land’s model, a gravity current slows and eventually stops. This trapping behaviour has important applications, for example to the ultimate distance contaminants or stored carbon dioxide may travel in the subsurface.

In this experimental study, we investigate the interaction of gravity–capillary solitary waves generated by two surface pressure sources moving side by side at constant speed. The nonlinear response of a water surface to a single source moving at a speed just below the minimum phase speed of linear gravity–capillary waves in deep water ($c_{min}\approx 23~\text{cm}~\text{s}^{-1}$) consists of periodic generation of pairs of three-dimensional solitary waves (or lumps) in a V-shaped pattern downstream of the source. In the reference frame of the laboratory, these unsteady lumps propagate in a direction oblique to the motion of the source. In the present experiments, the strengths of the two sources are adjusted to produce nearly identical responses and the free-surface deformations are visualized using photography-based techniques. The first lumps generated by the two sources move in intersecting directions that make a half-angle of approximately $15^{\circ }$ and collide in the centreplane between the sources. A steep depression is formed during the collision, but this depression quickly decreases in amplitude while radiating small-amplitude radial waves. After the collision, a quasi-stable pattern is formed with several rows of localized depressions that are qualitatively similar to lumps but exhibit periodic amplitude oscillations, similar to a breather. The shape of the wave pattern and the period of oscillations depend strongly on the distance between the sources.

This study considers the interaction of two identical solid axisymmetric bodies (of diameter $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}d$ and thickness $h$) freely falling in a fluid at rest. We determine the domains of existence of the different interaction behaviour of the two bodies (i.e. attraction, repulsion and indifference) as a function of their initial relative position. We then investigate in detail the case of bodies falling in tandem, for both rectilinear and periodic paths, and the associated attraction behaviour. For all the Reynolds numbers and aspect ratios of the bodies ($\chi = d/h$) investigated, the trailing body catches up with the leading body. We provide a quantitative description of the kinematics leading to the regrouping of the bodies and analyse its relationship with the wake of the leading body. In the case of rectilinear paths, a dynamical model that takes into account the axial evolution of the wake of the leading body is proposed to reproduce the acceleration observed for the trailing body until a vertical separation distance between the bodies of 1.5 diameters. In parallel, direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the flow about two fixed bodies in tandem in an oncoming flow are carried out, providing a good estimation of the motion of the bodies for separation distances larger than 5 diameters. For periodic paths, the kinematics leading to the regrouping of the bodies is slower than for rectilinear paths. However, in this case, the interaction also leads to significant changes in the characteristics of the oscillatory motion and is strongly dependent on the aspect ratio of the bodies. To explain the observed differences, we consider the effect of the transverse inhomogeneity of the wake of the leading body on the oscillatory motion of the trailing disk.

The effect of scalar-field (temperature) boundary conditions on the inertial-convective-range scaling exponents of the high-order passive scalar structure functions is studied in the turbulent, heated wake downstream of a circular cylinder. The temperature field is generated two ways: using (i) a heating element embedded within the cylinder that generates the hydrodynamic wake (thus creating a heated cylinder) and (ii) a mandoline (an array of fine, heated wires) installed downstream of the cylinder. The hydrodynamic field is independent of the scalar-field boundary conditions/injection methods, and the same in both flows. Using the two heat injection mechanisms outlined above, the inertial-convective-range scaling exponents of the high-order passive scalar structure functions were measured. It is observed that the different scalar-field boundary conditions yield significantly different scaling exponents (with the magnitude of the difference increasing with structure function order). Moreover, the exponents obtained from the mandoline experiment are smaller than the analogous exponents from the heated cylinder experiment (both of which exhibit a significant departure from the Kolmogorov prediction). Since the observed deviation from the Kolmogorov $n/ 3$ prediction arises due to the effects of internal intermittency, the typical interpretation of this result would be that the scalar field downstream of the mandoline is more internally intermittent than that generated by the heated cylinder. However, additional measures of internal intermittency (namely the inertial-convective-range scaling exponents of the mixed, sixth-order, velocity–temperature structure functions and the non-centred autocorrelations of the dissipation rate of scalar variance) suggest that both scalar fields possess similar levels of internal intermittency – a distinctly different conclusion. Examination of the normalized high-order moments reveals that the smaller scaling exponents (of the high-order passive scalar structure functions) obtained for the mandoline experiment arise due to the smaller thermal integral length scale of the flow (i.e. the narrower inertial-convective subrange) and are not solely the result of a more intermittent scalar field. The difference in the passive scalar structure function scaling exponents can therefore be interpreted as an artifact of the different, finite Péclet numbers of the flows under consideration – an effect that is notably less prominent in the other measures of internal intermittency.

We examine nonlinear geostrophic adjustment in a rapidly rotating (small Rossby number Ro) stably neutrally stratified (SNS) fluid consisting of a stratified upper layer with $N>f$ ($N$ is the buoyancy frequency, $f$ the Coriolis parameter) and a homogeneous lower layer, the density and other fields being continuous at the interface between the layers. The angular speed of rotation is non-parallel to gravity; the traditional and hydrostatic approximations are not used. The wave spectrum in the model consists of internal and gyroscopic waves. During the adjustment an arbitrary long-wave perturbation is split in a unique way into slow quasi-geostrophic (QG) and fast ageostrophic components with typical time scales $(Ro\, f)^{-1}$ and $f^{-1}$, respectively. The QG flow is governed by two coupled nonlinear equations of conservation of QG potential vorticity (PV) in the layers. The fast component is a sum of internal waves and inertial oscillations (long gyroscopic waves) confined to the homogeneous layer and modulated by an amplitude depending on coordinates and slow time. On times $t\sim (\, f\, Ro)^{-1}$ the slow component is not influenced by the fast one but the inertial oscillations amplitude is coupled to the QG flow and obeys an equation practically coinciding with that in the barotropic case (Reznik, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 743, 2014, pp. 585–605). A non-stationary boundary layer with large vertical gradients of horizontal velocity develops in the stratified layer near the interface to prevent penetration of the inertial oscillations into the stratified fluid; an analogous weaker boundary layer arises near the upper rigid lid. At large times the internal waves gradually decay because of dispersion and the resulting motion consists of the slow QG component and inertial oscillations confined to the barotropic lower layer.

Steady two-dimensional nonlinear flexural–gravity hydraulic falls past a submerged obstruction on the bottom of a channel are considered. The fluid is assumed to be ideal and is covered above by a thin ice plate. Cosserat theory is used to model the sheet of ice as a thin elastic shell, and boundary integral equation techniques are then employed to find critical flow solutions. By utilising a second obstruction, solutions with a train of waves trapped between two obstructions are investigated.

The incompressible impulsive time scale for inviscid liquid sloshing in open rigid containers suddenly put into motion is defined as the intermediate time scale in between the acoustic time scale and the gravitational time scale. Surge and sway boundary-value problems for incompressible impulsive sloshing in some realistic container shapes are solved analytically to the leading order in a small-time expansion. A solution is provided for two types of horizontal cylinders: a triangular cylindrical wedge and a half-filled circular cylinder. The surface velocity and the hydrodynamic force with its corresponding virtual fluid mass are calculated. The cases of constant impulsive velocity and constant impulsive acceleration are linked by transformation equations. Flows with waterline singularities are discussed, being leading-order outer flows in terms of matched asymptotic expansions.
