The present study reports experiments of water droplets impacting on ice or on a cold metal substrate, with the aim of understanding the effects of liquid solidification or substrate melting on the impingement process. Both liquid and substrate temperatures are varied, as well as the height of fall of the droplet. The dimensionless maximum spreading diameter, $\beta _m$, is found to increase with both temperatures as well as with the impact velocity. Here $\beta _m$ is reduced when liquid solidification, which enhances dissipation, is present, whereas fusion, i.e. substrate melting, favours the spreading of the impacting droplet. These observations are rationalized by extending an existing model of effective viscosity, in which phase change alters the size and shape of the developing viscous boundary layer, thereby modifying the value of $\beta _m$. The use of this correction allows us to adapt a scaling recently developed in the context of isothermal drop impacts to propose a law giving the maximum diameter of an impacting water droplet in the presence of melting or solidification. Finally, additional experiments of dimethyl sulfoxide drop impacts onto a cold brass substrate have been performed and are also captured by the proposed modelling, generalizing our results to other fluids.

Motivated by contradicting or insufficient information regarding the large-scale flow dynamics around surface-mounted finite-height square prisms of small aspect ratio, the present study investigates the dominant vortex shedding and low-frequency dynamics around a surface-mounted cube. These flow modes were obtained from the spectral proper orthogonal decomposition of large-eddy simulation results, at a Reynolds number of $\textit {Re}=1\times 10^4$ and two different types of boundary layer: a thin and laminar boundary layer with thickness $\delta /D=0.2$ and a thick and turbulent boundary layer with $\delta /D=0.8$. The main antisymmetric mode pair revealed a new flow pattern with the alternate shedding of streamwise flow structures, indicating a transition from the half-loops of taller prisms to only streamwise strands (i.e. no vertical core) for smaller aspect ratio. The formation process of the streamwise structures is due to a reorientation of the vorticity of the arch vortex in the streamwise direction characteristic of the shed structures. The low-frequency drift mode affected the length of the recirculation region, the strength of vortex shedding, and the near-wall flow field and pressure distribution on the cube's faces, leading to low-frequency variations in the fluctuating drag and normal force coefficients. These large-scale flow dynamics were similar for both boundary layers, but minor differences were identified, related mostly to the occurrence of flow attachment and the formation of a headband vortex for the thicker boundary layer.

The preference for particles to accumulate at specific regions in the near-wall part is a widely observed phenomenon in wall-bounded turbulence. Unlike small particles more frequently found in low-speed streaks, finite-size particles can accumulate in either low-speed or high-speed streaks. However, mechanisms and influencing factors leading to the different preferential concentration locations still need to be clarified. The present study conducts particle-resolved direct numerical simulations of particle-laden turbulent channel flows to provide a better understanding of this seemingly puzzling behaviour of preferential accumulation. These simulations cover different particle-to-fluid density ratios, particle volume fractions, particle sizes and degrees of sedimentation intensity. We find that the large particle size is the crucial factor that results in particles accumulating in high-speed streaks. Large particles not only are difficult to be conveyed by the quasi-streamwise vortices to low-speed streaks but also can escape from the near-wall region before moving spanwisely out from high-speed streaks. The sedimentation effect allows particles to gather closer to the channel wall and stay longer in the near-wall regions, reinforcing the sweeping mechanism of quasi-streamwise vortices that transport particles from high- to low-speed streaks. As a result, sedimenting particles tend to accumulate in the low-speed streaks.

The orientational dynamics of a spherical magnetic particle in linear shear flow subjected to an oscillating magnetic field in the flow plane is analysed in the viscous limit. The shear is in the $X$–$Y$ plane, the magnetic field is in the $X$ direction and the vorticity is perpendicular to the flow in the $Z$ direction. The relevant dimensionless groups are $\omega ^\ast$, the ratio of the frequency of the magnetic field and the strain rate, and $\varSigma$, the ratio of the magnetic and hydrodynamic torques. As $\varSigma$ is decreased, there is a transition from in-plane rotation, where the rotation is in the flow ($X$–$Y$) plane, to out-of-plane rotation, where the orientation vector is not necessarily in the $X$–$Y$ plane and the dynamics depends on the initial orientation. The particle rotation is phase-locked for in-plane rotation with discrete odd rotation number (number of rotations in one period of magnetic field oscillation), while the orbits are quasi-periodic with non-integer rotation number for out-of-plane rotation. For $\varSigma \gg 1$, regions of odd rotation number $n_o$ are bound by the lines $8 (n_o-1) \varSigma \omega ^\ast = 1$ and $8 (n_o+1) \varSigma \omega ^\ast = 1$, and there are discontinuous changes in the rotation number and mean and root-mean-square torque at these lines. For $\varSigma \ll 1$, the domains of in-plane rotation of finite width in the $\omega ^\ast$–$\varSigma$ plane extend into downward cusps at $\omega ^\ast = {1}/{2 n_o}$. The orbits are quasi-periodic between these domains, where the rotation is out of plane.

A rotating disk is the canonical experiment for measuring surface reaction rates in geochemical and electrochemical systems. Using the similarity solution for laminar flow around an infinite disk, the mass transfer coefficient can be simply related to the intrinsic reaction rate at the surface. However, measurements of mass transfer rates use a finite-size disk within a larger container of solution; here the flow is no longer strictly laminar, but there must always be some recirculation. Our interest was initially in the assumption of a uniform radial concentration field, how this breaks down near the perimeter of the disk, and what effect that might have on the measured mass transfer rates. However, our numerical simulations suggest that the flow around a finite-size disk becomes time dependent at Reynolds number ($Re$) below 1000, which is much smaller than the typical values in mass-transfer measurements (${Re} \sim 10^4$). We observe the formation of coherent structures in the flow, which suggest a non-uniform mass transfer at the disk surface. The rotating-disk flow follows a similar sequence of instabilities to the Taylor–Couette flow: a centrifugal instability leading an axisymmetric, time-invariant flow, followed by a Hopf bifurcation to a time-periodic flow. To minimise the possibility that our results are a numerical artefact, we have also simulated the instability in the stationary boundary layer of a rotor–stator flow, comparing with self-similar solutions at low ${Re}$ and with spectral methods near the critical Reynolds number.

We examine Lagrangian transport by a nonlinearly evolving vertical mode-1 internal tide in non-uniform stratification. In a companion paper (Sutherland & Dhaliwal, J. Fluid Mech., 2022, in press) it was shown that a parent internal tide can excite successive superharmonics that superimpose to form a solitary wave train. Despite this transformation, here we show that the collective forcing by the parent wave and superharmonics is effectively steady in time. Thus we derive relatively simple formulae for the Stokes drift and induced Eulerian flow associated with the waves under the assumption that the parent waves and superharmonics are long compared with the fluid depth. In all cases, the Stokes drift exhibits a mixed mode-1 and mode-2 vertical structure with the flow being in the waveward direction at the surface. If the background rotation is non-negligible, the vertical structure of the induced Eulerian flow is equal and opposite to that of the Stokes drift. This flow periodically increases and decreases at the inertial frequency with maximum magnitude twice that of the Stokes drift. When superimposed with the Stokes drift, the Lagrangian flow at the surface periodically changes from positive to negative over one inertial period. If the background rotation is zero, the induced Eulerian flow evolves non-negligibly in time and space for horizontally modulated waves: the depth below the surface of the positive Lagrangian flow becomes shallower ahead of the peak of the amplitude envelope and becomes deeper in the lee of the peak. These predictions are well-captured by fully nonlinear numerical simulations.

We study how channel width variations influence the dynamics of free-surface granular flows. For this purpose, we extend a continuum model framework to granular flows passing through channels that narrow or widen. Our theory uses a linearized approximation to an established dense granular flow rheology and a Coulomb friction law to model interaction between flow and sidewalls. We test the theoretical predictions using two novel 40 cm-diameter drums (convex and concave) filled halfway with 2 mm diameter particles rotated at rates in which the shear layer remains shallow and dense. We apply particle tracking velocimetry to enable quantitative comparisons between experimental data and theoretical predictions. We find that our experimental kinematics and energy profiles largely agree with the theoretical predictions. In general, flows through narrowing channels are faster and deeper than flows through widening channels. The influence of width variations grows with increasing flow speed, and the form of the rate dependence changes fundamentally as the regime changes from one in which kinetic energy is dissipated locally to one in which it is advected downstream. For both regimes, theoretical scaling analysis leads us to experimentally validated power laws, in which the exponent depends on the flow regime, and the multiplicative coefficient depends on channel geometry alone. Finally, we discuss how the differences between theoretical predictions and experimental data may be useful for improving our understanding of flows through non-uniform channels.

The evaporation process in porous media typically experiences three main periods, among which the first period, named the constant rate period (CRP), performs most efficiently in removing liquid. We aim to prolong the CRP to very low degrees of saturation (S) and increase its evaporation rate by playing with heterogeneity in wettability and pore size. First, we show that a porous medium with a smaller contact angle at the surface and increasing contact angle towards the inside generally dries out faster compared with that with uniform contact angle. Second, a constant contact angle porous medium with smaller/larger pores in the surface/inside part dries out faster than a medium with uniform pore size. The underlying mechanism is the occurrence of a capillary pressure jump at the border between the two layers accompanied by enhanced capillary pumping, increasing/maintaining the interfacial area in the surface pores. Harnessing the potential of this mechanism, we propose an optimized strategy by combining two heterogeneity effects: increasing contact angle and pore size towards the inside. This strategy is found to be robust both for multilayer and larger systems. In this case, a small drying front first penetrates fast towards the inside and then expands, followed by a horizontal drying front moving back layer by layer to the surface. Quantitatively, compared with evaporation from a homogeneously porous medium with uniform contact angle where CRP stops at $S=0.64$, our optimized design can extend the CRP down to $S=0.12$, and decrease five-fold the drying time needed to reach $S=0.05$.

A low-order vortex model has been developed for analysing the unsteady aerodynamics of airfoils. The model employs an infinitely thin vortex sheet in place of the attached boundary layer and a sheet of point vortices for the shed shear layer. The strength and direction of the vortex sheet shed at the airfoil trailing edge are determined by an unsteady Kutta condition. The roll-up of the ambient shear layer is represented by a unique point vortex, which is consistently fed circulation by the last point vortex of the free vortex sheet. The model's dimensionality is reduced by using three tuning parameters to balance representational accuracy and computational efficiency. The performance of the model is evaluated through experiments involving impulsively started and heaving and pitching airfoils. The model accurately captures the dynamics of the development and evolution of the shed vortical structure while requiring minimal computational resources. The validity of the model is confirmed through comparison with experimental force measurements and a baseline unsteady panel method that does not transfer circulation in the free vortex sheet.

The curvature instability of thin vortex rings is a parametric instability discovered from short-wavelength analysis by Hattori & Fukumoto (Phys. Fluids, vol. 15, 2003, pp. 3151–3163). A full-wavelength analysis using normal modes then followed in Fukumoto & Hattori (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 526, 2005, pp. 77–115). The present work extends these results to the case with different densities inside and outside the vortex core in the presence of surface tension. The maximum growth rate and the instability half-bandwidth are calculated from the dispersion relation given by the resonance between two Kelvin waves of $m$ and $m+1$, where $m$ is the azimuthal wavenumber. The result shows that vortex rings are unstable to resonant waves in the presence of density and surface tension. The curvature instability for the principal modes is enhanced by density variations in the small axial wavenumber regime, while the asymptote for short wavelengths is close to the constant density case. The effect of surface tension is marginal. The growth rates of non-principal modes are also examined, and long waves are most unstable.

The theory of transient growth describes how linear mechanisms can cause temporary amplification of disturbances even when the linearized system is asymptotically stable as defined by its eigenvalues. This growth is traditionally quantified by finding the initial disturbance that generates the maximum response at the peak time of its evolution. However, this can vastly overstate the growth of a real disturbance. In this paper, we introduce a statistical perspective on transient growth that models statistics of the energy amplification of the disturbances. We derive a formula for the mean energy amplification and spatial correlation of the growing disturbance in terms of the spatial correlation of the initial disturbance. The eigendecomposition of the correlation provides the most prevalent structures, which are the statistical analogue of the standard left singular vectors of the evolution operator. We also derive accurate confidence bounds on the growth by approximating the probability density function of the energy. Applying our analysis to Poiseuille flow yields a number of observations. First, the mean energy amplification is often drastically smaller than the maximum. In these cases, it is exceedingly unlikely to achieve near-optimal growth due to the exponential behaviour observed in the probability density function. Second, the characteristic length scale of the initial disturbances has a significant impact on the expected growth, with large-scale initial disturbances growing orders of magnitude more than small-scale ones. Finally, while the optimal growth scales quadratically with Reynolds number, the mean energy amplification scales only linearly for certain reasonable choices of the initial correlation.

In this paper, we investigate an old classical free streamline problem, namely, the two-dimensional re-entrant jet cavity flow past an obstacle. It is well known that for the re-entrant jet model, the direction of the jet is a free parameter that can be specified arbitrarily. To fix this uncertainty, we make a complementary conjecture: the direction should be chosen so that the mean kinetic energy of the remote part of the jet is minimal. Considering cavity flows over an oblique flat plate as an example, we show numerically that the direction is almost opposite to the incident flow. In addition, we present an analytical confirmation of this conclusion that is independent of the obstacle shape. Further, considering again the oblique flat plate as an example, we give an answer to the following question: What happens when the angle of attack tends to zero and the cavity number is finite? We demonstrate that for the limiting configurations, the re-entrant jet vanishes, and the limit is a free-surface flow with a symmetric bubble above the plate and two stagnation points on the lower side of the plate. For this limit we construct a simple exact analytical solution.

Biological microorganisms and artificial micro-swimmers often locomote in heterogeneous viscous environments consisting of networks of obstacles embedded into viscous fluid media. In this work, we use the squirmer model and present a numerical investigation of the effects of shape on swimming in a heterogeneous medium. Specifically, we analyse the microorganism's propulsion speed as well as its energetic cost and swimming efficiency. The analysis allows us to probe the general characteristics of swimming in a heterogeneous viscous environment in comparison with the case of a purely viscous fluid. We found that a spheroidal microorganism always propels faster, expends less energy and is more efficient than a spherical microorganism in either a homogeneous fluid or a heterogeneous medium. Moreover, we determined that above a critical eccentricity, a spheroidal microorganism in a heterogeneous medium can swim faster than a spherical microorganism in a homogeneous fluid. Based on an analysis of the forces acting on the squirmer, we offer an explanation for the decrease in the squirmer's speed observed in heterogeneous media compared with homogeneous fluids.

A variational principle is proposed to derive the governing equations for the problem of ocean wave interactions with a floating ice shelf, where the ice shelf is modelled by the full linear equations of elasticity and has an Archimedean draught. The variational principle is used to form a thin-plate approximation for the ice shelf, which includes water–ice coupling at the shelf front and extensional waves in the shelf, in contrast to the benchmark thin-plate approximation for ocean wave interactions with an ice shelf. The thin-plate approximation is combined with a single-mode approximation in the water, where the vertical motion is constrained to the eigenfunction that supports propagating waves. The new terms in the approximation are shown to have a major impact on predictions of ice shelf strains for wave periods in the swell regime.

Flow between axially rotating concentric cylinders is well known to exhibit rich dynamics. Hence, Taylor instabilities have been studied, both experimentally and theoretically, for many years. Although usually studied in the abstract, such geometries arise in a range of practical situations including drilling, when a drilling fluid flow enters a well via a pipe that is the centre body and returns via the annulus between the pipe and the borehole wall. In drilling, the centre body rotates and the annular flow contains rock cuttings. Here, we report the development of an Eulerian-Eulerian solver, based on OpenFOAM, that solves for this cuttings transport problem in the presence of both gravity and Taylor vortices. To check the reliability of the solver, we conduct a set of experiments spanning a wide range of complex flow regimes. We show that the model successfully predicts, in all regimes, the observed complex redistribution of particulates. However, for suspension flows under viscously dominated conditions, high particle concentrations and in rectilinear flow, particle pressure and normal stress differences are sufficient to capture particle migration. Results show that in more complex flows exemplified by the Taylor–Couette flow studied here, more realistic predictions of non-Brownian particle migration require inclusion of forces arising through the relative velocity of the two phases including lift forces originating both from inertia and particle rotation.
