Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) of a turbulent boundary layer at ${\mathit{Re}}_{\theta } $ of 9800 are identified in a plane parallel to the wall at ${y}^{+ } = 50$. Three-component high-speed stereo particle image velocimetry measurements on a two-dimensional rectangular plane are used for the analysis. The velocity field is extended in the streamwise direction, using Taylor’s frozen field hypothesis. A computational approach utilizing the variational theory of hyperbolic Lagrangian coherent structures is applied to the domain and trajectories are computed using the extended field. The method identified both attracting and repelling Lagrangian coherent structures. There are no apparent differences in distribution of size, orientation and location of attracting and repelling structures. Hyperbolic behaviour appeared in the fluid at and around points of intersection between the attracting and repelling Lagrangian coherent structures. The network of curves identifying distinct regions of coherent flow patterns is displayed in observed relationship between the arrangement of Lagrangian coherent structures and various Eulerian fields.

We investigate the hovering dynamics of rigid bodies with up-down asymmetry placed in oscillating background flows. Recent experiments on inanimate pyramid-shaped objects in oscillating flows with zero mean component demonstrate that the resulting aerodynamic forces are sufficient to keep the object aloft. The mechanisms responsible for this lift production are fundamentally unsteady and depend on the shed vorticity. Here, we consider a model system of a two-dimensional flyer and compute the unsteady, two-way coupling between the flyer and the surrounding fluid in the context of the vortex sheet model. We examine in detail the flow properties (frequency and speed) required for hovering and their dependence on the flyer’s characteristics (mass and geometry). We find that, at low oscillation frequencies, a flyer of a fixed mass and shape requires a constant amount of flow acceleration to hover, irrespective of the frequency and speed of the oscillating flow. Meanwhile, at high oscillation frequencies, the flow speed required to hover is constant. In either case, the aerodynamic requirements to hover (flow acceleration or flow speed) are an intrinsic property of the flyer itself. This physical insight could potentially have significant implications on the design of unmanned air vehicles as well as on understanding active hovering of live organisms that can manipulate their flapping motion to favour a larger oscillation amplitude or frequency.

The interaction of pure capillary waves with boundaries that constrain the contact line are of interest for problems involving liquids contained by minimal solid contact for applications in low gravity and at small scales in normal gravity. Time-harmonic capillary waves on a liquid cylinder axially incident on and scattered by an infinitesimal concentric barrier are considered theoretically in the inviscid limit. The barrier is taken to be infinitesimally small in the sense that its immersed depth is of the order of the amplitude of contact-line motion. Edge conditions on the barrier that are investigated include a pinned contact line and a moving contact line by an effective-slip model, assuming that contact-line velocity is proportional to the deviation of the contact angle from equilibrium multiplied by a slip coefficient. The incident waves are taken to be those with wavelengths short enough to be stable on the liquid cylinder. Scattering and dissipation by the contact line are determined as a function of wavenumber and slip coefficient. Zero transmission is approached in the long-wave limit. The short-wave limit agrees with established results for the scattering of planar gravity–capillary waves on a deep liquid by a surface-piercing vertical barrier in the limit of zero barrier depth and zero gravity. We find that contact-line dissipation at the barrier is a maximum for incident waves whose phase speed is of the order of the slip coefficient, which is interpreted as an effect of impedance matching. Transmission past an infinitesimal barrier is found to be low over all parameter space, illustrating the importance of contact-line constraints.

This work describes experiments in which a stably stratified salt solution is subjected to steady lateral temperature gradients. The criteria for the onset of layered convection are observed to agree with previously published stability analysis. Convective layers formed in this way are found to be statically unstable; they always merge two into one to form a new system. This process continues until the density jump at the solute interface between layers is larger than the density deficit produced by the side wall heating/cooling. The eventual stable system develops into well-mixed convective layers separated by sharp solute interfaces. The conditions for any subsequent layer intermixing and its effect on the lateral heat transfer across the slot, are also described.

This paper considers the structure and linear stability of two-dimensional hollow vortex equilibria. Equilibrium solutions for a single hollow vortex in linear and nonlinear straining flows are derived in analytical form using free streamline theory. The linear stability properties of this solution class are then determined numerically and a new type of resonance-induced displacement instability is identified. It is found to be a consequence of the fact that one of the shape distortion modes of a circular hollow vortex has the same frequency as one of the modes corresponding to displacement of the vortex centroid. The instability is observed in the case of an isolated hollow vortex situated in straining flow of order three. We also revisit the hollow vortex row solution due to Baker, Saffman & Sheffield (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 74, 1976, p. 1469), and since it is currently lacking in the literature, we present a full linear stability analysis of this solution using Floquet analysis.

Separation of a supersonic boundary layer near a compression ramp is considered in the limit of large Reynolds numbers and for Mach numbers $O(1)$. When the ramp angle is small, the motion may be described by the well-known triple-deck theory describing viscous–inviscid interactions. For small values of the scaled ramp angle, steady stable solutions can be obtained. However, it is shown that when a recirculation zone is present and the ramp angle is sufficiently large, the flow in the recirculation zone is susceptible to convective instabilities when perturbations are introduced there. At still larger values of the scaled ramp angle, an absolute instability is shown to occur that leads to a violent local breakdown of the boundary layer. The calculated results are shown to be consistent with a theoretical criterion that is the necessary and sufficient condition for the onset of instability.

The effect of surface tension on the onset of convection in horizontal double-diffusive layer was studied both experimentally and by linear stability analysis. The experiments were conducted in a rectangular tank with base dimension of 25×13 cm and 5 cm in height. A stable solute (NaCl) stratification was first established in the tank, and then a vertical temperature gradient was imposed. Vertical temperature and concentration profiles were measured using a thermocouple and a conductivity probe and the flow patterns were visualized by a schlieren system. Two types of experiments were carried out which illustrate the effect of surface tension on the onset of convection. In the rigid–rigid experiments, when the critical thermal Rayleigh number, RT, is reached, large double-diffusive plumes were seen simultaneously to rise from the heated bottom and descend from the cooled top. In the rigid–free experiments, owing to surface tension effects, the first instability onset was of the Marangoni type. Well-organized small plumes were seen to emerge and persist close to the top free surface at a relatively small RTM (where subscript M denotes ‘Marangoni’). At larger RTt > RTM (where subscript t denotes ‘top’) these plumes evolved into larger double-diffusive plumes. The onset of double-diffusive instability at the bottom region occurred at a still higher RTb > RTt (where subscript b denotes ‘bottom‘). A series of stability experiments was conducted for a layer with an initial top concentration of 2 wt% and different concentration gradients. The stability map shows that in the rigid–free case the early Marangoni instability in the top region reduces significantly the critical RT for the onset of double-diffusive convection. Compared with the rigid–rigid case, the critical RT in the top region is reduced by about 60% and in the bottom region by about 30%. The results of the linear stability analysis, which takes into account both surface tension and double-diffusive effects, are in general agreement with the experiments. The analysis is then applied to study the stability characteristics of such a layer as gravity is reduced to microgravity level. Results show that even at 10 −4g0, where g0 is the gravity at sea level, the double-diffusive effect is of equal importance to the Marangoni effect.

We study the breakup of confined fluid threads at low flow rates to understand instability mechanisms. To determine the critical conditions between the earlier quasi-stable necking stage and the later unstable collapse stage, simulations and experiments are designed to operate at an extremely low flow rate. The critical mean radii at the neck centres are identified by the stop-flow method for elementary microfluidic configurations. Two distinct origins of capillary instabilities are revealed for different confinement situations. One is the gradient of capillary pressure induced by the confinements of geometry and external flow, whereas the other is the competition between the capillary pressure and internal pressure determined by the confinements.

We have observed two novel manifestations of the Weissenberg effect in viscoelastic liquids which are set into motion by the rotation of a circular rod. In the first experiment we floated a layer of STP on water. The STP climbs up the rod into the air and down the rod into the water. The ‘down-climb’ is much larger than the ‘up-climb’, their ratio being roughly the square root of the density difference (STP-air)/ (water–STP). The magnification of the down-climb may be regarded as normal-stress amplification. [dagger] The magnitudes of the up- and down-climbs are simultaneously in good agreement with the predictions of a theory of rod climbing when the angular frequency of the rod is small. In the second experiment, we set the rod into torsional oscillations. When the amplitude of the oscillation is small, the fluid climbs the rod; the climb is divided into an axisymmetric steady mean part and an oscillating part (Joseph 1976b; Beavers 1976). The mean axisymmetric climb dominates the total climb at low frequencies. At a higher critical speed the axisymmetric climbing bubble loses its stability to another time-periodic motion with the same period but with a ‘flower’ pattern displaying a certain integral number of petals.

The selection and placement of actuators and sensors to control compressible viscous flows is addressed by developing a novel methodology based upon the eigensystem structural sensitivity of the linearized evolution operator appropriate for linear feedback control. Forward and adjoint global modes are used to construct a space of possible perturbations to the linearized operator, which yields a small optimization problem for selecting the parameters that best achieve the control objective, including where they should be placed. The method is demonstrated by informing actuation to suppress amplification of the instabilities in boundary layer separation in a high-subsonic diffuser. Complete stabilization is observed in the separated shear layer for short downstream distances at modest Reynolds number. Higher Reynolds numbers and longer distances are expected to be more challenging to stabilize; here the control informed by the procedure still substantively suppresses amplification of instabilities. It is also demonstrated that more complex actuator–sensor selections may not yield superior controllers.

We investigate the dynamics of a swimming microorganism inside a surfactant-laden drop for axisymmetric configurations under the assumptions of small Reynolds number and small surface Péclet number $(Pe_{s})$. Expanding the variables in $Pe_{s}$, we solve the Stokes equations for the concentric configuration using Lamb’s general solution, while the dynamic equation for the stream function is solved in the bipolar coordinates for the eccentric configurations. For a two-mode squirmer inside a drop, the surfactant redistribution can either increase or decrease the magnitude of swimmer and drop velocities, depending on the value of the eccentricity. This was explained by analysing the influence of surfactant redistribution on the thrust and drag forces acting on the swimmer and the drop. The far-field representation of a surfactant-covered drop enclosing a pusher swimmer at its centre is a puller; the strength of this far field is reduced due to the surfactant redistribution. The advection of surfactant on the drop surface leads to a time-averaged propulsion of the drop and the time-reversible swimmer that it engulfs, thereby causing them to escape from the constraints of the scallop theorem. We quantified the range of parameters for which an eccentrically stable configuration can be achieved for a two-mode squirmer inside a clean drop. The surfactant redistribution shifts this eccentrically stable position towards the top surface of the drop, although this shift is small.

The influence of a non-monotonic viscosity–concentration relationship on miscible displacements in porous media is studied for radial source flows and the quarter five-spot configuration. Based on linear stability results, a parametric study is presented that demonstrates the dependence of the dispersion relations on both the Péclet number and the parameters of the viscosity profile. The stability analysis suggests that any displacement can become unstable provided only that the Péclet number is sufficiently high. In contrast to rectilinear flows, for a given end-point viscosity ratio an increase of the maximum viscosity generally has a destabilizing effect on the flow. The physical mechanisms behind this behaviour are examined by inspecting the eigensolutions to the linear stability problem. Nonlinear simulations of quarter five-spot displacements, which for small times correspond to radial source flows, confirm the linear stability results. Surprisingly, displacements characterized by the largest instability growth rates, and consequently by vigorous viscous fingering, lead to the highest breakthrough recoveries, which can even exceed that of a unit mobility ratio flow. It can be concluded that, for non-monotonic viscosity profiles, the interaction of viscous fingers with the base-flow vorticity can result in improved recovery rates.

Simulations of homogeneously sheared turbulence (HST) are conducted until a universal self-similar state is established at the long non-dimensional time $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}t=20$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ is the shear rate. The simulations are enabled by a new robust and discretely conservative algorithm. The method solves the governing equations in physical space using the so-called shear-periodic boundary conditions. Convection by the mean homogeneous shear flow is treated implicitly in a split step approach. An iterative Crank–Nicolson time integrator is chosen for robustness and stability. The numerical strategy captures without distortion the Kelvin modes, rotating waves that are fundamental to homogeneously sheared flows and are at the core of rapid distortion theory. Three direct numerical simulations of HST with the initial Taylor scale Reynolds number $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}0}=29$ and shear numbers of $S_{0}^{\ast }=\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}q^{2}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}=3$, 15 and 27 are performed on a $2048\times 1024\times 1024$ grid. Here, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}$ is the dissipation rate and $1/2q^{2}$ is the turbulent kinetic energy. The long integration time considered allows the establishment of a self-similar state observed in experiments but often absent from simulations conducted over shorter times. The asymptotic state appears to be universal with a long time production to dissipation rate ${\mathcal{P}}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}\sim 1.5$ and shear number $S^{\ast }\sim 10$ in agreement with experiments. While the small scales exhibit strong anisotropy increasing with initial shear number, the skewness of the transverse velocity derivative decreases with increasing Reynolds number.

The hybrid Euler–Lagrange (HEL) description of fluid mechanics, pioneered largely by Andrews & McIntyre (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 89, 1978, pp. 609–646), has had to face the fact, in common with all Lagrangian descriptions of fluid motion, that the variables used do not describe conditions at the coordinate x, upon which they depend, but conditions elsewhere at some displaced position xL(x, t) = x + ξ(x, t), generally dependent on time t. To address this issue, we employ ‘Lie dragging’ techniques of general tensor calculus to extend a method introduced by Moffatt (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 166, 1986, pp. 359–378) in the fluid dynamic context, whereby the point x is dragged to xL(x, t) by a ‘fictitious steady flow’ η*(x, t) in a unit of ‘fictitious time’. Whereas ξ(x, t) is a Lagrangian concept intimately linked to the location xL(x, t), the ‘dragging velocity’ η*(x, t) has an essentially Eulerian character, because it describes the fictitious velocity at x itself. For the case of constant-density fluids, we show, using solenoidal η*(x, t) instead of solenoidal ξ(x, t), how the HEL theory can be cast into Eulerian form. A useful aspect of this Eulerian development is that the mean flow itself remains solenoidal, a feature that traditional HEL theories lack. Our method realizes the objective sought by Holm (Physica D, vol. 170, 2002, pp. 253–286) in his derivation of the Navier–Stokes–α equation, which is the basis of one of the methods currently employed to represent the sub-grid scales in large-eddy simulations. His derivation, based on expansion to second order in ξ, contained an error which, when corrected, implied a violation of Kelvin's theorem on the constancy of circulation in inviscid incompressible fluid. We show that this is rectified when the expansion is in η* rather than ξ, Kelvin's theorem then being satisfied to all orders for which the expansion converges. We discuss the implications of our approach using η* for the Navier–Stokes–α theory.

We examine the motion of a high-pressure aqueous solution, through a low-permeability fracture, towards a low-pressure well. As the liquid decompresses in the fractures it expands, and for sufficiently high initial temperature the liquid reaches the boiling point. A vaporization front then develops, so that vapour issues from the well. As the fluid evaporates near the well, the salt concentration of the residual fluid increases. If the salt concentration increases beyond the saturation limit, then the evaporation leads to precipitation of salt in the fracture. We find a new family of self-similar solutions to describe the boiling and precipitation in a single idealized fracture, which at long times remains approximately isothermal owing to the cross-fracture heat transfer. The solutions describe the mass of salt that precipitates as a function of the initial salt concentration, the reservoir temperature and pressure, and the well pressure. In fact, this family of self-similar solutions is multi-valued: we identify a liquid-advection-dominated regime, in which the boiling front advances slowly and the fracture porosity decreases significantly, and a boiling-dominated regime, in which the boiling front advances more rapidly, and less precipitate forms at each point in the fracture. As the pressure difference between the well and the far field reservoir increases, these solutions converge, and eventually coincide. Beyond this critical point, there is no similarity solution, since the advective flux of salt from the far-field would produce more precipitate than can be taken up in the fracture adjacent to the boiling front. Instead, the rock will become fully sealed through precipitation, thereby suppressing flow into the well. We extend the model to show that an analogous result also occurs within an extensive porous layer. However in that case, the system is not isothermal; instead, the heat flux is supplied in the direction of flow, while the cross-flow heat flux is small. We discuss the relevance of the work to the natural venting of steam in high-temperature geothermal systems.

In this paper, the regular reflection (RR) to Mach reflection (MR) transition of asymmetric shock waves is theoretically studied by employing the classical two- and three-shock theories. Computations are conducted to evaluate the effects of expansion fans, which are inherent flow structures in asymmetric reflection of shock waves, on the RR → MR transition. Comparison shows good agreement among the theoretical, numerical and experimental results. Some discrepancies between experiment and theory reported in previous studies are also explained based on the present theoretical analysis. The advanced RR → MR transition triggered by a transverse wave is also discussed for the interaction of a hypersonic flow and a double-wedge-like geometry.

The stability of a horizontal boundary layer flow on a vertical wall in a viscous stably stratified fluid is considered in this work. A temporal stability analysis is performed for a tanh velocity profile as a function of the Reynolds number $Re=UL/{\it\nu}$ and the Froude number $F=U/(LN)$ where $U$ is the main stream velocity, $L$ the boundary layer thickness, $N$ the buoyancy frequency and ${\it\nu}$ the kinematic viscosity. The diffusion of density is neglected. The boundary layer flow is found to be unstable with respect to two instabilities. The first one is the classical viscous instability which gives rise to Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) waves. We demonstrate that, even in the presence of stratification, the most unstable TS wave remains two-dimensional and therefore independent of the Froude number. The other instability is three-dimensional, inviscid in nature and associated with the stratification. It corresponds to the so-called radiative instability. We show that this instability appears first for $Re\geqslant Re_{c}^{(r)}\approx 1995$ for a Froude number close to 1.5 whereas the viscous instability develops for $Re\geqslant Re_{c}^{(v)}\approx 3980$. For large Reynolds numbers, the radiative instability is also shown to exhibit a much larger growth rate than the viscous instability in a large Froude number interval. We argue that this instability could develop in experimental facilities as well as in geophysical situations encountered in ocean and atmosphere.

We develop a set of equations to explore the behaviour of cooling elastic-plated gravity currents for constant influx conditions. In particular, we introduce a temperature-dependent viscosity to couple the flow thermal structure with the velocity field. We show that this coupling results in important deviations from the isoviscous case. In particular, the bending and gravity asymptotic regimes, characteristic of the isoviscous case, both split into three different thermal phases: a first ‘hot’ isoviscous phase, a second phase where the spreading rate drastically decreases and the flow thickens and a third ‘cold’ isoviscous phase. The viscosity that controls the spreading rate differs in both asymptotic regimes; it is the average viscosity of a small peeling region at the current tip in the bending regime and the average flow viscosity in the gravity regime. In both regimes, we characterize the evolution of the thermal anomaly and determine the time scale of the phase changes in terms of the Péclet number and of the viscosity contrast. Finally, we show that the evolution with bending and gravity can result in six different evolution scenarios depending on the combination of dimensionless numbers considered. We provide a phase diagram which summarizes them as a function of the flow Péclet number and viscosity contrast.
