We develop a set of equations to explore the behaviour of cooling elastic-plated gravity currents for constant influx conditions. In particular, we introduce a temperature-dependent viscosity to couple the flow thermal structure with the velocity field. We show that this coupling results in important deviations from the isoviscous case. In particular, the bending and gravity asymptotic regimes, characteristic of the isoviscous case, both split into three different thermal phases: a first ‘hot’ isoviscous phase, a second phase where the spreading rate drastically decreases and the flow thickens and a third ‘cold’ isoviscous phase. The viscosity that controls the spreading rate differs in both asymptotic regimes; it is the average viscosity of a small peeling region at the current tip in the bending regime and the average flow viscosity in the gravity regime. In both regimes, we characterize the evolution of the thermal anomaly and determine the time scale of the phase changes in terms of the Péclet number and of the viscosity contrast. Finally, we show that the evolution with bending and gravity can result in six different evolution scenarios depending on the combination of dimensionless numbers considered. We provide a phase diagram which summarizes them as a function of the flow Péclet number and viscosity contrast.

This study revisits the problem of the zonally symmetric instability on the equatorial $\beta$-plane. Rather than treating the classical problem of a steady basic flow, it treats a sequence of problems of increasing complexity in which the basic flow is oscillatory in time with a frequency $\omega_0$.

First, for the case of a homogeneous fluid, a time-oscillating barotropic shear forcing may excite a subharmonic parametric resonance of inertial oscillations. Because of the continuous distribution of inertial oscillation frequencies, this resonance occurs at critical inertial latitudes $y_c$ such that $\beta y_c {=}{\pm} {\omega_0}/2$. Next the effects of stratification, characterized by Brunt–Väisälä frequency $N$, are taken into account. It is shown analytically (in the asymptotic limit of a weak shear) that the forced temporal oscillation leads to an inertial-parametric instability, when a resonance condition between the basic flow frequency and the sum of two inertio-gravity free-mode frequencies is met. This inertial-parametric instability has a well-defined inviscid vertical scale selection favouring the high-vertical mode $m_c{\sim}7.45m_0$, where $m_0{=}{\beta N}/{\omega_0^2}$ is the equatorial vertical mode characteristic of frequency $\omega_0$. The viscous critical shear of inertial-parametric instability is lower than the steady inertial instability one.

Finally, this type of setting naturally arises when the basic flow is considered to be an equatorial wave, so the problem is recast with the nonlinear adjustment of the vertically sinusoidal basic state of a zonally symmetric mixed Rossby–gravity (MRG) wave. Initial-value numerical simulations show that the same inertial-parametric instability exists leading to a resonant subharmonic excitation of free modes with vertical scales 7 and 8 times smaller than the basic-state wave. A simplified dynamical model of the instability is introduced, demonstrating that the oscillatory nature of the shear with height for the MRG wave necessarily implies a resonance between distinct vertical modes, the most unstable ones being modes 7 and 8 for a large enough Froude number of the MRG wave. The nonlinear action of the instability is described in terms of angular momentum and potential vorticity changes: a significant mixing due to the breaking of the excited high vertical modes creates a vertically averaged westward flow at the equator and extra-equatorial eastward flows. The ideas exposed may play a part in explaining layering phenomena and the latitudinal structure of the zonal flow in the equatorial oceans below the thermocline.

The flow past circular cylinders of finite length, supported at one end and lying with their axes perpendicular to a uniform stream, has been investigated in a supersonic stream at Mach number 1.96 and also in a low-speed stream. In both stream it was found that the flow past the cylinders could be divided into three regions: (a) a central region, (b) that near the free end of the cylinder, and (c) that near the supported end. The locations of the second and third regions were found to be almost independent of the cylinder length-to-diameter ratio, provided that this exceeded 4, while the flow within and the extent of the first region were dependent on this ratio. Form-drag coefficients determined in the central region in the supersonic flow were in close agreement with the values determined at the same Mach number by other workers. In the low-speed flow the local form-drag coefficients were dependent on length-to-diameter ratio and were always less than that of an infinite-length cylinder at the same Reynolds number.

Continuum modelling of dense gas–solid flows strongly depends on the constitutive relations used, including the interphase drag force, particle phase stress and the boundary condition for particle–wall interactions. The lack of scale separation is usually claimed to cause the breakdown of the Navier–Stokes (NS) order continuum theory. In this study, computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method (CFD-DEM) simulations of bubbling, turbulent and fast fluidization of smooth, inelastic spheres were conducted to systematically analyse the valid range of NS theory. An entropy-based criterion $I_{s}$ and Knudsen numbers defined using different characteristic length scales ($Kn_{frac}$, $Kn_{gran}$ and $Kn_{vel}$) were quantified. It was found that (i) except at the centre of bubbles where the solid concentration is quite low, NS theory for discrete particles was valid for bubbling fluidization irrespective of the breakdown criterion. Even at the boundary of the bubbles, values of $I_{s}$ and $Kn$ were small; and (ii) the conclusion depended on the criterion used in turbulent and fast fluidization. If $Kn_{frac}$ was used, NS theory would be generally valid. If $I_{s}$ was chosen, NS theory would be still valid but with lower confidence. However, if $Kn_{vel}$ or $Kn_{gran}$ was selected, NS theory broke down. Because $I_{s}$ includes the non-equilibrium effects caused by the gradient of hydrodynamic fields and particle inelasticity, we may conclude that NS theory was valid for all tested cases. This means that the continuum description of discrete particles is not the main source of the breakdown of NS theory.

The propagation of wave disturbances in water of varying depth bounded above by ice sheets is discussed, accounting for gravity, compressibility and elasticity effects. Considering the more realistic scenario of elastic ice sheets reveals a continuous spectrum of acoustic–gravity modes that propagate even below the cutoff frequency of the rigid surface solution where surface (gravity) waves cannot exist. The balance between gravitational forces and oscillations in the ice sheet defines a new dimensionless quantity $\mathfrak{Ka}$. When the ice sheet is relatively thin and the prescribed frequency is relatively low ($\mathfrak{Ka}\ll 1$), the free-surface bottom-pressure solution is retrieved in full. However, thicker ice sheets or propagation of relatively higher frequency modes ($\mathfrak{Ka}\gg 1$) alter the solution fundamentally, which is reflected in an amplified asymmetric signature and different characteristics of the eigenvalues, such that the bottom pressure is amplified when acoustic–gravity waves are transmitted to shallower waters. To analyse these scenarios, an analytical solution and a depth-integrated equation are derived for the cases of constant and varying depths, respectively. Together, these are capable of modelling realistic ocean geometries and an inhomogeneous distribution of ice sheets.

The structure of the pressure and velocity fields in the air above mechanically generated water waves was investigated in order to evaluate their contribution to the transfer of momentum and energy from wind to water waves. The measurements were taken in a transformed Eulerian wave-following frame of reference, in a wind-wave research facility at Stanford University.

The organized component of the fluctuating static pressure at the channel roof was found to contain contributions from both the sound field and the reflected water wave. The acoustic contributions were accounted for by appropriately correcting the pressure amplitude and phase (relative to the wave) and its contribution to the momentum and energy exchange. The wave-induced pressure coefficient at the fundamental mode shows in general an exponential decay behaviour with height, but the rate of decay is different from that predicted by potential-flow theory. The wave-induced pressure phase relative to the wave remains fairly constant throughout the boundary layer, except when the ratio of the wave speed to the freestream velocity, c/Uδ0 = 0.78 and 0.68. This phase difference was found to be about 130° during active wave generation, with the pressure lagging the wave. The momentum and energy transfer rates supported by the waves were found to be dominated by the wave-induced pressure, but the transfer of the corresponding total quantities to both waves and currents may or may not be so dominated, depending on the ratio c/Uδ0. The direct contribution of the wave-induced Reynolds stresses to the transfer processes is negligible.

Acoustic microstreaming due to an oscillating microbubble, either coated or free, is analytically investigated. The detailed flow field is obtained and the closed streamlines of the ring vortex generated by microstreaming are plotted in both Eulerian and Lagrangian descriptions. Analytical expressions are found for the ring vortex showing that its length depends only on the separation of the microbubble from the wall and the dependence is linear. The circulation as a scalar measure of the vortex is computed quantitatively identifying its spatial location. The functional dependence of circulation on bubble separation and coating parameters is shown to be similar to that of the shear stress.

A stably stratified shear flow has the velocity profile V(1 - e−y/h) and the density profile log(ρ/ρ) = σ(1 − e−y/h) in 0 < y < ∞ and is bounded by the rigid plane y = 0. It is proved that small disturbances with respect to this basic flow are stable for all wavelengths and Richardson numbers. The eigenvalues for neutral disturbances (internal gravity waves) are enumerated. The results are applicable to the atmosphere and to an infinitely deep ocean.

Hairpin vortices are widely studied as an important structural aspect of wall turbulence. The present work describes, for the first time, nonlinear travelling wave solutions to the Navier–Stokes equations in the channel flow geometry – exact coherent states (ECS) – that display hairpin-like vortex structure. This solution family comes into existence at a saddle-node bifurcation at Reynolds number $Re=666$. At the bifurcation, the solution has a highly symmetric quasi-streamwise vortex structure similar to that reported for previously studied ECS. With increasing distance from the bifurcation, however, both the upper and lower branch solutions develop a vortical structure characteristic of hairpins: a spanwise-oriented ‘head’ near the channel centreplane where the mean shear vanishes connected to counter-rotating quasi-streamwise ‘legs’ that extend toward the channel wall. At $Re=1800$, the upper branch solution has mean and Reynolds shear-stress profiles that closely resemble those of turbulent mean profiles in the same domain.

The stability of a hypersonic boundary layer for a $5^{\circ }$ half-angle cone at the Caltech T5 high-enthalpy flow conditions was investigated using direct numerical simulations. For the ‘linear’ stability investigations, the boundary layer was perturbed by small axisymmetric disturbances with very small amplitudes, and for the nonlinear regime, three-dimensional pulse disturbances with larger amplitudes were introduced. The surprising result from these investigations was that the 3D wave packet undergoes strong spatial modulations, which we have not observed for other experimental conditions (e.g. the Purdue BAM6QT). This modulation was found to be directly due to the synchronization between second-mode wave components and vorticity/entropy modes. Furthermore, it was found that a synchronization with slow acoustic waves leads to a sudden and strong emission of acoustic waves deep into the free stream, which was observed for both a linear wave train and a 3D nonlinear wave packet. Therefore, it can be concluded that this is a linear mechanism that is not suppressed by nonlinear effects.

We consider the problem of formulating perturbative expansions of the conformation tensor, which is a positive definite tensor representing polymer deformation in viscoelastic flows. The classical approach does not explicitly take into account that the perturbed tensor must remain positive definite – a fact that has important physical implications, e.g. extensions and compressions are represented similarly to within a negative sign, when physically the former are unbounded and the latter are bounded from below. Mathematically, the classical approach assumes that the underlying geometry is Euclidean, and this assumption is not satisfied by the manifold of positive definite tensors. We provide an alternative formulation that retains the conveniences of classical perturbation methods used for generating linear and weakly nonlinear expansions, but also provides a clear physical interpretation and a mathematical basis for analysis. The approach is based on treating a perturbation as a sequence of successively smaller deformations of the polymer. Each deformation is modelled explicitly using geodesics on the manifold of positive definite tensors. Using geodesics, and associated geodesic distances, is the natural way to model perturbations to positive definite tensors because it is consistent with the manifold geometry. Approximations of the geodesics can then be used to reduce the total deformation to a series expansion in the small perturbation limit. We illustrate our approach using direct numerical simulations of the nonlinear evolution of Tollmien–Schlichting waves.

First, we review analytical and observational studies on third-order structure functions including velocity and buoyancy increments in rotating and stratified turbulence and discuss how these functions can be used in order to estimate the flux of energy through different scales in a turbulent cascade. In particular, we suggest that the negative third-order velocity–temperature–temperature structure function that was measured by Lindborg & Cho (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 85, 2000, p. 5663) using stratospheric aircraft data may be used in order to estimate the downscale flux of available potential energy (APE) through the mesoscales. Then, we calculate third-order structure functions from idealized simulations of forced stratified and rotating turbulence and compare with mesoscale results from the lower stratosphere. In the range of scales with a downscale energy cascade of kinetic energy (KE) and APE we find that the third-order structure functions display a negative linear dependence on separation distance $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}} r $, in agreement with observation and supporting the interpretation of the stratospheric data as evidence of a downscale energy cascade. The spectral flux of APE can be estimated from the relevant third-order structure function. However, while the sign of the spectral flux of KE is correctly predicted by using the longitudinal third-order structure functions, its magnitude is overestimated by a factor of two. We also evaluate the third-order velocity structure functions that are not parity invariant and therefore display a cyclonic–anticyclonic asymmetry. In agreement with the results from the stratosphere, we find that these functions have an approximate $ r^{2} $-dependence, with strong dominance of cyclonic motions.

If a sill-enclosed basin, connected to a large reservoir, is suddenly subjected to a de-stabilizing surface buoyancy flux, it will first mix vertically by turbulent convection before the resulting lateral buoyancy gradient generates a horizontal exchange flow across the sill. We present a study which examines the unsteady adjustment of such a basin under continued steady forcing. It is shown, through theoretical development and laboratory experimentation, that two consecutive unsteady regimes characterized by different dynamic balances are traversed as the flow approaches a steady state.

Once established the exchange flow is controlled at the sill crest where it is hydraulically critical. In the absence of a lateral contraction, the single control at the sill crest allows a range of submaximal exchange states with the flow at the sill being dependent not only on the forcing and geometrical parameters but also on mixing conditions within the basin which are, in turn, dependent on the sill exchange. The sill–basin system is therefore strongly coupled although it remains isolated from the external reservoir conditions by a region of internally supercritical flow. Results from the laboratory experiments are used to demonstrate the link between the forcing and the exchange flow at the sill. Steady-state measurements of the interior mean velocity and buoyancy fields are also compared with previous analytical models.

Recent numerical results on advection dynamics have shown that particles denser than the fluid can remain trapped indefinitely in a bounded region of an open fluid flow. Here, we investigate this counterintuitive phenomenon both numerically and analytically to establish the conditions under which the underlying particle-trapping attractors can form. We focus on a two-dimensional open flow composed of a pair of vortices and its specular image, which is a system we represent as a vortex pair plus a wall along the symmetry line. Considering particles that are much denser than the fluid, referred to as heavy particles, we show that two attractors form in the neighbourhood of the vortex pair provided that the particle Stokes number is smaller than a critical value of order unity. In the absence of the wall, the attractors are fixed points in the frame rotating with the vortex pair, and the boundaries of their basins of attraction are smooth. When the wall is present, the point attractors describe counter-rotating ellipses in this frame, with a period equal to half the period of one isolated vortex pair. The basin boundaries remain smooth if the distance from the vortex pair to the wall is large. However, these boundaries are shown to become fractal if the distance to the wall is smaller than a critical distance that scales with the inverse square root of the Stokes number. This transformation is related to the breakdown of a separatrix that gives rise to a heteroclinic tangle close to the vortices, which we describe using a Melnikov function. For an even smaller distance to the wall, we demonstrate that a second separatrix breaks down and a new heteroclinic tangle forms farther away from the vortices, at the boundary between the open and closed streamlines. Particles released in the open part of the flow can approach the attractors and be trapped permanently provided that they cross the two separatrices, which can occur under the effect of flow unsteadiness. Furthermore, the trapping of heavy particles from the open flow is shown to be robust to the presence of viscosity, noise and gravity. Navier–Stokes simulations for large flow Reynolds numbers show that viscosity does not destroy the attracting points until vortex merging takes place, while simulation of thermal noise shows that particle trapping persists for extended periods provided that the Péclet number is large. The presence of a gravitational field does not alter the permanent trapping by the attracting points if the settling velocities are not too large. For larger settling velocities, however, gravity can also give rise to a limit-cycle attractor next to the external separatrix and to a new form of trapping from the open flow that is not mediated by a heteroclinic tangle.

Experiments were conducted to determine the effectiveness of controlling vortex breakdown in a confined cylindrical vessel using a small rotating disk, which was flush-mounted into the opposite endwall to the rotating endwall driving the primary recirculating flow. The results show that the control disk, with relatively little power input, can modify the azimuthal and axial flow significantly, changing the entire flow structure in the cylinder. Co-rotation was found to precipitate vortex breakdown onset whereas counter-rotation delays it. Furthermore, for the Reynolds-number range over which breakdown normally exists, co-rotation increases the bubble radial and axial dimensions, while shifting the bubble in the upstream direction. By contrast, counter-rotation tends to reduce the size of the bubble, or completely suppress it, while shifting the bubble in the downstream direction. These effects are amplified substantially by the use of larger control disks and higher rotation ratios. A series of numerical simulations close to the onset Reynolds number reveals that the control disk acts to generate a rotation-rate-invariant local positive or negative azimuthal vorticity source away from the immediate vicinity of the control disk but upstream of breakdown. Advection of this source along streamlines modifies the strength of the azimuthal vorticity ring, which effectively controls whether the flow reverses on the axis, and thus, in turn, whether vortex breakdown occurs. The vorticity source generated by the control disk scales approximately linearly with rotation ratio and cubically with disk diameter; this allows the observed variation of the critical Reynolds number to be approximately predicted.

Direct numerical simulations of transitional flow in a rectangular duct of cross-sectional aspect ratio $A\equiv s/h=1$–9 ($s$ and $h$ being the duct half-span and half-height, respectively) have been performed in the Reynolds number range $\mathit{Re}\equiv u_{b}h/{\it\nu}=650$–1500 ($u_{b}$ and ${\it\nu}$ being the bulk velocity and the kinematic viscosity, respectively) in order to investigate the dependence on the aspect ratio of spatially localized turbulence structures. It was observed that the lowest Reynolds number $\mathit{Re}_{T}$, estimated in a specific way, for localized (transiently sustaining) turbulence decreases monotonically from $\mathit{Re}_{T}=730$ for $A=1$ (square duct) with increasing aspect ratio, and for $A=5$ it nearly attains a minimal value $\mathit{Re}_{T}\approx 670$ that is consistent with the onset Reynolds number of turbulent spots in a plane channel ($A=\infty$). Turbulent states consist of localized structures that undergo a fundamental change around $A=4$. At $\mathit{Re}=\mathit{Re}_{T}$ turbulence for $A=1$–$3$ is streamwise-localized similar to turbulent puffs in pipe flow, while for $A=5$–9 turbulence at $\mathit{Re}=\mathit{Re}_{T}$ is also localized in the spanwise direction, similar to turbulent spots in plane channel flow. This structural change in turbulent states at $\mathit{Re}=\mathit{Re}_{T}$ is attributed to the exclusion of turbulence from the vicinity of the duct sidewalls in the case of a wide duct with $A\gtrsim 4$: here the friction length on the sidewalls is so long that the size (around 100 times the friction length) of a self-sustaining minimal flow unit of streamwise vortices and streaks is larger than the duct height and, therefore, it cannot be accommodated.
