We investigate the dynamics of an object towed over the surface of an initially flat, deformable layer. Using a combination of simple laboratory experiments and a theoretical model, we demonstrate that an inclined plate, pivoted so as to move up and down, may be towed steadily over a substrate at low speed, but become unstable to vertical oscillations above a threshold speed. That threshold depends upon the weight of the plate and the physical properties of the substrate, but arises whether the substrate is a viscous fluid, a viscoplastic fluid, or a granular medium. For the latter two materials, the unstable oscillations imprint a permanent rippled pattern on the layer, suggesting that the phenomenon of the ‘washboard road’ can arise from the passage of a single vehicle (i.e. the absolute instability of a flat bed). We argue that the mechanism behind the instability originates from the mound of material that is pushed forward ahead of the object: the extent of the mound determines the resultant force, whereas its growth is controlled by the object’s height relative to the undisturbed surface, allowing for an unstable coupling between the vertical motion and the substrate deformation.

We perform an experimental and theoretical study of the wave pattern generated by the leg strokes of water striders during a propulsion cycle. Using the synthetic schlieren method, we are able to measure the dynamic response of the free surface accurately. In order to match experimental conditions, we extend Bühler’s theory of impulsive forcing (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 573, 2007, pp. 211–236) to finite depth. We demonstrate the improved ability of this approach to reproduce the experimental findings, once the observed continuous forcing and hence non-zero temporal and spatial extent of the leg strokes is also taken into account.

The behaviour of converging spherical shock waves is considered using Whitham's theory of geometrical shock dynamics. An analysis of converging shocks whose initial shape takes the form of regular polyhedra is presented. The analysis of this problem is motivated by the earlier work on converging cylindrical shocks discussed in Schwendeman & Whitham (1987). In that paper, exact solutions were reported for converging polygonal shocks in which the initial shape re-forms repeatedly as the shock contracts. For the polyhedral case, the analysis is performed both analytically and numerically for an equivalent problem involving shock propagation in a converging channel with triangular cross-section. It is found that a repeating sequence of shock surfaces composed of nearly planar pieces develops, although the initial planar surface does not re-form, and that the increase in strength of the shock at each iterate in the sequence follows the same behaviour as for a converging spherical shock independent of the convergence angle of the channel. In this sense, the shocks are stable and the result is analogous to that found in the two-dimensional case. A numerical study of converging spherical shocks subject to smooth initial perturbations in strength shows a strong tendency to form surfaces composed of nearly planar pieces suggesting that the stability result is fairly general.

The wandering of a wing-tip vortex in free-stream turbulence was documented by analysis of multi-probe hot-wire measurements in a wind tunnel and flow visualisation and particle image velocimetry measurements in a water tunnel. An error-minimisation approach was applied to the hot-wire measurements to estimate the time history of the location of the vortex axis, whereas flow visualisation from two orthogonal views permitted the reconstruction of relatively long sections of the vortex axis. The amplitude of the wandering motion was found to scale with the turbulence intensity, the core radius and the vortex turnover time; this amplitude was insensitive to changes in the integral length and time scales of the turbulence. The period of the vortex wandering was distributed in the range between 1 and 10 vortex turnover times. The wavelength of wandering was distributed at a relatively long value, which scaled with the vortex turnover time. The velocity of vortex wandering depended on the vortex turnover time, but also contained an additional contribution that was consistent with motion induced by bending waves. The prevalence of the vortex turnover time as the scale for vortex wandering was interpreted as evidence that vortex-induced straining of the free-stream eddies bounds the interaction time between the two, thus limiting the time available for linear and angular momentum transfer.

A two-time-scale perturbation expansion is used to derive a cross-section-averaged convection–dispersion equation for the particle distribution in the flow of a concentrated suspension of neutrally buoyant, non-colloidal particles through a straight, circular tube. Since the cross-streamline motion of particles is governed by shear-induced migration, the Taylor-dispersion coefficient ${\mathscr{D}}_{eff} $ scales as ${U}^{\prime } {R}^{3} / {a}^{2} $, ${U}^{\prime } $, $R$ and $a$ being the characteristic velocity scale, the tube radius and the particle radius, respectively. Here ${\mathscr{D}}_{eff} $ is found to decrease monotonically with an increase in the particle concentration. The linear dependence of ${\mathscr{D}}_{eff} $ on ${U}^{\prime } $ implies that changes in the cross-section averaged axial concentration profile are dependent only on the total axial strain experienced by the suspension. This stipulates that the spatial evolution of a fluctuation in the concentration of particles in the flowing suspension, or the width of the mixing zone between two regions of different concentrations in the tube will be independent of the suspension velocity in the tube. A second interesting feature in particulate dispersion is that the effective velocity of the particulate phase is concentration-dependent, which, by itself (i.e. without considering Taylor dispersion), can produce either sharpening or relaxation of concentration gradients. In particular, shocks with positive concentration gradients along the flow direction can asymptotically evolve into time-independent distributions in an appropriately chosen frame of reference, and concentration pulses relax asymmetrically. These trends are contrasted with those expected from the classical problem of Taylor dispersion of a passive tracer in the same geometry. The results in this paper are especially relevant for suspension flows through microfluidic geometries, where the induction lengths for shear-induced migration are short.

The shear rheology of an emulsion of viscous drops in the presence of finite inertia is investigated using direct numerical simulation. In the absence of inertia, emulsions display a non-Newtonian rheology with positive first and negative second normal stress differences. However, recently it was discovered that a small amount of drop-level inertia alters their signs – the first normal stress difference becomes negative and the second one becomes positive, each in a small range of capillary numbers (Li & Sarkar, J. Rheol., vol. 49, 2005, pp. 1377–1394). Sign reversal was shown numerically and analytically, but only in the limit of a dilute emulsion where drop–drop interactions were neglected. Here, we compute the rheology of a density- and viscosity-matched emulsion, accounting for the interactions in the volume fraction range of 5 %–27 % and Reynolds number range of 0.1–10. The computed rheological properties (effective shear viscosity and first and second normal stress differences) in the Stokes limit match well with previous theoretical (Choi–Schowalter in the dilute limit) and simulated results (for concentrated systems) using the boundary element method. The two distinct components of the rheology arising from the interfacial stresses at the drop surface and the perturbative Reynolds stresses are investigated as functions of the drop Reynolds number, capillary number and volume fraction. The sign change is caused by the increasing drop inclination in the presence of inertia, which in turn directly affects the interfacial stresses. Increase of the volume fraction or capillary number increases the critical Reynolds number for sign reversals due to enhanced alignment of the drops with the flow directions. The effect of increasing the volume fraction on the rheology is explained by relating it to interactions and specifically to the contact pair-distribution function computed from the simulation. The excess stresses are seen to show an approximately linear behaviour with the Reynolds number in the range of 0.1–5, while with the capillary number and volume fraction, the variation is weakly quadratic.

We study the advection of a passive scalar by a vortex couple in the small-diffusion (i.e. large Péclet number, Pe) limit. The presence of weak diffusion enhances mixing within the couple and allows the gradual escape of the scalar from the couple into the surrounding flow. An averaging technique is applied to obtain an averaged diffusion equation for the concentration inside the dipole which agrees with earlier results of Rhines & Young for large times. At the outer edge of the dipole, a diffusive boundary layer of width O(Pe−½) forms; asymptotic matching to the interior of the dipole yields effective boundary conditions for the averaged diffusion equation. The analysis predicts that first the scalar is homogenized along the streamlines on a timescale O(Pe−$\frac{1}{3}$). The scalar then diffuses across the streamlines on the diffusive timescale, O(Pe). Scalar that diffuses into the boundary layer is swept to the rear stagnation point, and a finite proportion is expelled into the exterior flow. Expulsion occurs on the diffusive timescale at a rate governed by the lowest eigenvalue of the averaged diffusion equation for large times. A split-step particle method is developed and used to verify the asymptotic results. Finally, some speculations are made on the viscous decay of the dipole in which the vorticity plays a role analogous to the passive scalar.

This study presents findings from a first-of-its-kind measurement campaign that includes simultaneous measurements of the full velocity and vorticity vectors in both pipe and boundary layer flows under matched spatial resolution and Reynolds number conditions. Comparison of canonical turbulent flows offers insight into the role(s) played by features that are unique to one or the other. Pipe and zero pressure gradient boundary layer flows are often compared with the goal of elucidating the roles of geometry and a free boundary condition on turbulent wall flows. Prior experimental efforts towards this end have focused primarily on the streamwise component of velocity, while direct numerical simulations are at relatively low Reynolds numbers. In contrast, this study presents experimental measurements of all three components of both velocity and vorticity for friction Reynolds numbers $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}$ ranging from 5000 to 10 000. Differences in the two transverse Reynolds normal stresses are shown to exist throughout the log layer and wake layer at Reynolds numbers that exceed those of existing numerical data sets. The turbulence enstrophy profiles are also shown to exhibit differences spanning from the outer edge of the log layer to the outer flow boundary. Skewness and kurtosis profiles of the velocity and vorticity components imply the existence of a ‘quiescent core’ in pipe flow, as described by Kwon et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 751, 2014, pp. 228–254) for channel flow at lower $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}$, and characterize the extent of its influence in the pipe. Observed differences between statistical profiles of velocity and vorticity are then discussed in the context of a structural difference between free-stream intermittency in the boundary layer and ‘quiescent core’ intermittency in the pipe that is detectable to wall distances as small as 5 % of the layer thickness.

Whereas the flow of simple single-phase Newtonian fluids tends to become more complex as the characteristic length scale in the problem (and hence the Reynolds number) increases, for complex elastic fluids such as dilute polymer solutions the opposite holds true. Thus small-scale, so-called ‘microfluidic’ flows of complex fluids can exhibit rich dynamics in situations where the ‘equivalent’ flow of Newtonian fluids remains linear and predictable. In the recent study of Qin et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 864, 2019, R2) of the flow of a dilute polymeric fluid past a $50~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ cylinder (in a $100\times 60~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ channel), a novel 3-D holographic particle velocimetry technique reveals the underlying complexity of the flow, including inherent three-dimensionality and symmetry breaking as well as strong upstream propagation effects via elastic waves.

For wave loads on cylinders constituting a long but finite array in the presence of incident waves, variations in the magnitude of the load with the non-dimensional wavenumber exhibit interesting features. Towering spikes and nearby secondary peaks (troughs) associated with trapped modes have been studied extensively. Larger non-trapped regions other than these two are termed Region III in this study. Studies of Region III are rare. We find that fluctuations in Region III are regular; the horizontal distance between two adjacent local maximum/minimum points, termed fluctuation spacing, is constant and does not change with non-dimensional wavenumbers. Fluctuation spacing is related only to the total number of cylinders in the array, identification serial number of the cylinder concerned and wave incidence angle. Based on the interaction theory and constructive/destructive interference, we demonstrate that the fluctuation characteristics can be predicted using simple analytical formulae. The formulae for predicting fluctuation spacing and the abscissae of every peak and trough in Region III are proposed. We reveal the intrinsic mechanism of the fluctuation phenomenon. When the diffraction waves emitted from the cylinders at the ends of the array and the cylinder concerned interfere constructively/destructively, peaks/troughs are formed. The fluctuation phenomenon in Region III is related to solutions of inhomogeneous equations. By contrast, spikes and secondary peaks are associated with solutions of the eigenvalue problem. This study of Region III complements existing understanding of the characteristics of the magnitude of wave load. The engineering significances of the results are discussed as well.

The Boltzmann equation provides a rigorous theoretical framework to study dilute gas flows at arbitrary degrees of rarefaction. Asymptotic methods have been applied to steady flows, enabling the development of analytical formulae. For unsteady (oscillatory) flows, two important limits have been studied: (i) at low oscillation frequency and small mean free path, slip models have been derived; and (ii) at high oscillation frequency and large mean free path, the leading-order dynamics are free-molecular. In this article, the complementary case of small mean free path and high oscillation frequency is examined in detail. All walls are solid and of arbitrary smooth shape. We perform a matched asymptotic expansion of the unsteady linearized Boltzmann–BGK equation in the small parameter $\nu / \omega $, where $\nu $ is the collision frequency of gas particles and $\omega $ is the characteristic oscillation frequency of the flow. Critically, an algebraic expression is derived for the perturbed mass distribution function throughout the bulk of the gas away from any walls, at all orders in the frequency ratio $\nu / \omega $. This is supplemented by a boundary layer correction defined by a set of first-order differential equations. This system is solved explicitly and in complete generality. We thus provide analytical expressions up to first order in the frequency ratio, for the density, temperature, mean velocity and stress tensor of the gas, in terms of the temperature and mean velocity of the wall, and the applied body force. In stark contrast to other asymptotic regimes, these explicit formulae eliminate the need to solve a differential equation for a body of arbitrary geometry. To illustrate the utility of these results, we study the oscillatory thermal creep problem for which we find a tangential boundary layer flow arises at first order in the frequency ratio.

Turbulent flows behind two side-by-side square cylinders with three different gap ratios, namely, $L_{d}/T_{0}=4,$ 6 and 8 ($L_{d}$ is the separation distance between two cylinders and $T_{0}$ is the cylinder thickness) are investigated by using direct numerical simulations. Depending on the strength of the gap flow, the three cases can generally be characterized into two regimes, one being the weak gap flow regime and the other being the robust gap flow regime. The wake-interaction length scale can only be applied to characterize the spatial evolution of the dual-wake flow in the robust gap flow regime. And only in this regime can the so-called ‘extreme events’ (i.e. non-Gaussian velocity fluctuations with large flatness) be identified. For the case with $L_{d}/T_{0}=6$, two downstream locations, i.e. $X/T_{0}=6$ and 26, at which the turbulent flows are highly non-Gaussian distributed and approximately Gaussian distributed, respectively, are analysed in detail. A well-defined $-5/3$ energy spectrum can be found in the near-field region (i.e. $X/T_{0}=6$), where the turbulent flow is still developing and highly intermittent and Kolmogorov’s universal equilibrium hypothesis does not hold. We confirm that the approximate $-5/3$ power law in the high-frequency range is closely related to the occurrences of the extreme events. As the downstream distance increases, the velocity fluctuations gradually adopt a Gaussian distribution, corresponding to a decrease in the strength of the extreme events. Consequently, the range of the $-5/3$ power law narrows. In the upstream region (i.e. $X/T_{0}=6$), the second-order structure function exhibits a power-law exponent close to $1$, whereas in the far downstream region (i.e. $X/T_{0}=26$) the expected $2/3$ power-law exponent appears. The larger exponent at $X/T_{0}=6$ is related to the fact that fluid motions in the intermediate range can directly ‘feel’ the large-scale vortex shedding.

A model of skin-stabilized interfacial cavitation nuclei and their response to tensile and compressive stressing is presented. The model is evaluated in relation to experimental tensile strength results for water at rest at the bottom of an open water-filled container at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. These results are obtained by recording the initial growth of cavities generated by a short tensile pulse applied to the bottom of the container. It is found that the cavitation nuclei shift their tensile strength depending on their pressure history. Static pressurization for an extended period of time prior to testing is known to increase the tensile strength of water, but little information is available on how it is affected by compression pulses of short duration. This is addressed by imposing compression pulses of approximately 1 ms duration and a peak intensity of a few bar prior to the tension pulse. The observations are interpreted on the basis of the new model.

Pressure distribution and the effect of air injection in the separated flow over a spiked-hemisphere were investigated at a Mach number of 3·3, and Reynolds number around the transitional value. Pressure distribution along the spike as well as over the body was measured in the absence of injection. Air was injected into the separated flow at the spike tip and base and reattachment region through one or more orifices drilled normal to the surface, and the resulting flow patterns were observed using the schlieren technique. The results show that (i) the pressure variation along the spike is similar to a two-dimensional separated flow in the transition régime; and (ii) the mass injection at the spike tip has a strong destabilizing effect regardless of injection rate, while the injection from spike base and reattachment region can be either slightly stabilizing or destabilizing depending on the flow condition.
