Cellular membranes are elastic lipid bilayers that contain a variety of proteins, including ion channels, receptors and scaffolding proteins. These proteins are known to diffuse in the plane of the membrane and to influence the bending of the membrane. Experiments have shown that lipid flow in the plane of the membrane is closely coupled with the diffusion of proteins. Thus, there is a need for a comprehensive framework that accounts for the interplay between these processes. Here, we present a theory for the coupled in-plane viscous flow of lipids, diffusion of transmembrane proteins and elastic deformation of lipid bilayers. The proteins in the membrane are modelled such that they influence membrane bending by inducing a spontaneous curvature. We formulate the free energy of the membrane with a Helfrich-like curvature elastic energy density function modified to account for the chemical potential energy of proteins. We derive the conservation laws and equations of motion for this system. Finally, we present results from dimensional analysis and numerical simulations and demonstrate the effect of coupled transport processes in governing the dynamics of membrane bending and protein diffusion.

Spontaneous capillary imbibition is a classical problem in interfacial fluid dynamics with a broad range of applications, from microfluidics to agriculture. Here we study the duration of the cross-over between an initial linear growth of the imbibition front to the diffusive-like growth limit of Washburn's law. We show that local-resistance sources, such as the inertial resistance and the friction caused by the advancing meniscus, always limit the motion of an imbibing front. Both effects give rise to a cross-over of the growth exponent between the linear and the diffusive-like regimes. We show how this cross-over is much longer than previously thought – even longer than the time it takes the liquid to fill the porous medium. Such slowly slowing-down dynamics is likely to cause similar long cross-over phenomena in processes governed by wetting.

We consider the interactions of internal tides (ITs) with a dynamic, rotational and heterogeneous ocean, and spatially varying topography. The IT fields are expanded using vertical modal basis functions, whose amplitudes vary horizontally and temporally. We obtain the evolution equations of modal amplitudes and energy including simultaneous three-way interactions with the mean flow, buoyancy and topography. We apply these equations to a set of idealized and two realistic data-assimilative primitive equation simulations. These simulations reveal that significant interactions of ITs with the background fields occur at topographic features and strong currents, in particular when the scales of the background and ITs are similar. In local hot spots, the new three-way interaction terms, when compared to the total modal conversion, are found to reach up to 10 %–30 % at steep topography and approximately 50 % in the Gulf Stream. We provide a dimensional analysis to guide the diagnosis of such strong interactions. When IT interactions are with a large-scale barotropic current (without topographic effects), our modal energy equation reduces to the conservation of modal wave action under a Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin consideration. We further derive analytical solutions of the modulation of wavenumber and energy of an IT propagating into a collinear current. For ITs propagating along the flow direction, the wavelength is stretched and the amplitude is reduced, with the degree of modulation determined by $|\,f/\omega _0|$, the ratio of inertial to tidal frequencies. For ITs propagating opposite to the flow direction, a critical value of $|\,f/\omega _0|$ exists, below and above which the waves show remarkably different behaviours. The critical opposing current speed which triggers the wave focusing/blocking phenomenon is obtained and its implication for the propagation and dissipation of ITs is discussed.

This paper investigates flow past a backward-facing step (BFS) in a duct at Reynolds number $Re = 5080$ based on step height, mean inflow velocity and fluid kinematic viscosity. The flow configuration matches a combustion experiment conducted by Pitz and Daily in 1983. High-resolution velocity fields are obtained in OpenFOAM by direct numerical simulation, and the flow field analysed by Lagrangian approaches. Trajectories of fluid particles in areas of interest are obtained by high-order numerical integration, and used to compute finite-time Lyapunov exponents (FTLEs) and polar rotation angles. Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs) are extracted using geodesic theory, including hyperbolic LCSs and elliptic LCSs. We use complementary qualitative and quantitative LCS analyses to uncover the underlying flow structures. Notably, we find that a flow pathway in which fluid particles rarely diverge from adjacent particles is opened and closed by FTLE ridges determined by the periodic shedding of vortices from the BFS. Two dominant vortices with significant Lagrangian coherence, generated respectively by the separated boundary layer and shear layer, are self-sustaining and of comparable strength. Hyperbolic repelling LCSs act as transport barriers between the pathway and cores of the coherent vortices, thus playing a major part in the fluid entrainment process. Interactions between these different geometric regions partitioned by LCSs lead to intrinsic complexity in the BFS flow.

Despite its pivotal role in the classic theory of turbulent line plumes, there has been no consensus on the value of the entrainment coefficient $\alpha$ suitable for a pure plume. Reported measurements vary by 100 %, from $\alpha =0.1$ to $\alpha =0.2$, hindering the predictive capabilities of plume theory. Following our theoretical developments, measurements of plume entrainment using a new approach and a rigorous assessment of reported values for $\alpha$, we conclude that ${\alpha =0.11\pm 15\,\%}$ should be adopted as the consensus value. Our theoretical framework demonstrates how $\alpha$ is determined from underlying plume measurements, and places an emphasis on the link between measurement uncertainty and uncertainty in $\alpha$. This framework inspired our experimental design, intentionally conceived to precisely determine $\alpha$. From measurements of the plume scalar width and the entrainment velocity outside the plume, we determine that $\alpha =0.108\pm 2\,\%$ ($95\,\%$ confidence interval). Complementing our experiments is an evaluation of the historical data which, after we explain why some reported values of $\alpha$ are erroneous, supports the range $0.095\lesssim \alpha \lesssim 0.13$. The proposed consensus value thus represents both our precisely determined value and the variation in the published data. The significance of a consensus value for $\alpha$ can be summarised as follows: (i) it enhances confidence in the application of plume theory to practical situations and (ii) it permits more detailed comparison of entrainment between pure line plumes and related turbulent flows, including forced and lazy line plumes and wall plumes.

Modulation of fluid temperature fluctuations by particles due to thermal interaction in homogeneous isotropic turbulence is studied. For simplicity, only thermal coupling between the fluid and particles is considered, and momentum coupling is neglected. Application of the statistical theory used in cloud turbulence research leads to the prediction that modulation of the intensity of fluid temperature fluctuations by particles is expressed as a function of the Damköhler number, which is defined as the ratio of the turbulence large-eddy turnover time to the fluid thermal relaxation time. Direct numerical simulations are conducted for two-way thermal coupling between the fluid temperature field and point particles in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The simulation results are shown to agree well with the theoretical predictions.

We investigate the intermittency of the coupling behaviour in screeching twin round supersonic jets at low Mach numbers across a range of nozzle spacings. Application of proper orthogonal decomposition combined with time-frequency wavelet analysis and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition shows that intermittency can manifest in twin jets as either a competition between the two symmetries, or the jets uncoupling and recoupling. The time scales on which symmetry switching occurs can vary strongly, ranging from $O(10^2)$ to $O(10^3)$ screech cycles. A transition from one symmetry to another is accompanied by a slight change in the screech frequency ranging from 0.30 % to 0.63 %. It was observed that complete uncoupling occurred only at the largest nozzle spacing of $s/D=6$ and at Mach numbers close to modal staging. When the jets are uncoupled they screech at slightly different frequencies, with a disparity of approximately 0.6 %. The coupling is particularly intermittent in the transition from the A1 to A2 branch, where the A2 mode is first observed, and tends toward steady coupling with increasing Mach number.

Large-eddy simulation (LES) of a wind- and wave-forced water column based on the Craik–Leibovich (C–L) vortex force is used to understand the structure of small-scale Langmuir circulation (LC) and associated Langmuir turbulence. The LES also serves to understand the role of the turbulence in determining molecular diffusive scalar flux from a scalar-saturated air side to the water side and the turbulent vertical scalar flux in the water side. Previous laboratory experiments have revealed that small-scale LC beneath an initially quiescent air–water interface appears shortly after the initiation of wind-driven gravity–capillary waves and provides the laminar–turbulent transition in wind speeds between 3 and $6~\text{m}~\text{s}^{-1}$. The LES reveals Langmuir turbulence characterized by multiple scales ranging from small bursting eddies at the surface that coalesce to give rise to larger (centimetre-scale) LC over time. It is observed that the smaller scales account for the bulk of the near-surface turbulent vertical scalar flux. Although the contribution of the larger (centimetre-scale) LC to the near-surface turbulent flux increases over time as these scales emerge and become more coherent, the contribution of the smaller scales remains dominant. The growing LC scales lead to increased vertical scalar transport at depths below the interface and thus greater scalar transfer efficiency. Simulations were performed with a fixed wind stress corresponding to a $5~\text{m}~\text{s}^{-1}$ wind speed but with different wave parameters (wavelength and amplitude) in the C–L vortex force. It is observed that longer wavelengths lead to more coherent, larger centimetre-scale LC providing greater contribution to the turbulent vertical scalar flux away from the surface. In all cases, the molecular diffusive scalar flux at the water surface relaxes to the same statistically steady value after transition to Langmuir turbulence occurs, despite the different wave parameters in the C–L vortex force across the simulations. This implies that the small-scale turbulence intensity and the molecular diffusive scalar flux at the surface scale with the wind shear and not with the wave parameters. Furthermore, it is seen that the Langmuir (wave) forcing (provided by the C–L vortex force) is necessary to trigger the turbulence that induces elevated molecular diffusive scalar flux at the water surface relative to wind-driven flow without wave forcing.

In the present study, turbulent particle-laden boundary layer combustion over a flat plate is investigated using direct numerical simulation (DNS). A two-way coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian point particle method is used for the solid phase. The effects of particle Stokes numbers, mass loadings and chemical reactions on the interactions between particles and boundary layer turbulence in the near-wall region are explored. It was found that particle heat transfer is dominant over wall heat transfer in the reacting case with heavy particles and large mass loadings, resulting in a lower fluid temperature. Particle accumulation due to the turbophoresis effect in the near-wall region is observed, which is more prominent in the cases with a large Stokes number. The turbophoresis effect is examined via the magnitude of streamwise vorticity $\varOmega _x$. It is shown that $\varOmega _x$ is attenuated by heavy particles, and the attenuation increases with increasing mass loadings. Therefore, particle wall–accumulation is less prominent in the cases with large mass loadings. Compared with the non-reacting cases, the distribution of particles is more inhomogeneous for the reacting cases, where the particles move faster due to intense reactions with increasing wall-normal distance. Finally, the flow topologies and the Reynolds stress anisotropy are examined to understand turbulence modulation by combustion and particles. It was suggested that light particles augment the vortex-dominant topologies, whereas heavy particles have an opposite effect. The anisotropy mapping of the Reynolds stress shows that the flows become more one-dimensional in the near-wall region for the cases with combustion and/or large mass loadings.

The motion of a rigid sphere in ambient simple shear flow of a Newtonian fluid between infinite parallel walls is calculated via the lattice Boltzmann method for various particle Reynolds numbers, ${\textit {Re}}_p=Ga^2/\nu$, where $G$ is the velocity gradient of the shear; $a$ is the particle radius; and $\nu$ is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. For a neutrally buoyant sphere, there exists a critical ${\textit {Re}}_p$ below which the hydrodynamic lift force has a single zero crossing, driving the particle to an equilibrium position at the centre of the channel. Above the critical ${\textit {Re}}_p$, the equilibrium position of the sphere undergoes a supercritical pitchfork bifurcation; inertial lift creates three equilibrium positions: an unstable equilibrium position at the centre and two stable equilibria equidistant from the centre. The critical ${\textit {Re}}_p$ occurs below the transition to unsteady flow, and increases with increasing particle confinement ratio, $\kappa =a/H$, where $H$ is the channel height. The equilibrium position of a non-neutrally buoyant sphere shifts toward a confining wall of the channel, in a manner that is dependent on the orientation, i.e. horizontal or vertical, of the channel. In both channel alignments, the gravitational force breaks the symmetry of the particle dynamics about the centreline of the channel, resulting in an imperfect bifurcation above a critical ${\textit {Re}}_p$. However, a sufficiently strong gravitational force will break the bifurcation and produce a single off-centre equilibrium position. We finally consider a neutrally buoyant sphere under the cessation or reversal of shear flow.

In this study, the length scaling for the boundary layer separation induced by two incident shock waves is experimentally and analytically investigated. The experiments are performed in a Mach 2.73 flow. A double-wedge shock generator with two deflection angles ($\alpha _1$ and $\alpha _2$) is employed to generate two incident shock waves. Two deflection angle combinations with an identical total deflection angle are adopted: ($\alpha _1 = 7^\circ$, $\alpha _2 = 5^\circ$) and ($\alpha _1 = 5^\circ$, $\alpha _2 = 7^\circ$). For each deflection angle combination, the flow features of the dual-incident shock wave–turbulent boundary layer interactions (dual-ISWTBLIs) under five shock wave distance conditions are examined via schlieren photography, wall-pressure measurements and surface oil-flow visualisation. The experimental results show that the separation point moves downstream with increasing shock wave distance ($d$). For the dual-ISWTBLIs exhibiting a coupling separation state, the upstream interaction length ($L_{int}$) of the separation region approximately linearly decreases with increasing $d$, and the decrease rate of $L_{int}$ with $d$ increases with the second deflection angle under the condition of an identical total deflection angle. Based on control volume analysis of mass and momentum conservations, the relation between $L_{int}$ and $d$ is analytically determined to be approximately linear for the dual-ISWTBLIs with a coupling separation region, and the slope of the linear relation obtained analytically agrees well with that obtained experimentally. Furthermore, a prediction method for $L_{int}$ of the dual-ISWTBLIs with a coupling separation region is proposed, and the relative error of the predicted $L_{int}$ in comparison with the experimental result is $\sim$10 %.

The flow in a spherical cavity on a curved round pipe is a canonical flow that describes well the flow inside a sidewall aneurysm on an intracranial artery. Intracranial aneurysms are often treated with a flow-diverting stent (FDS), a low-porosity metal mesh that covers the entrance to the cavity, to reduce blood flow into the aneurysm sac and exclude it from mechanical stresses imposed by the blood flow. Successful treatment is highly dependent on the degree of reduction of flow inside the cavity, and the resulting altered fluid mechanics inside the aneurysm following treatment. Using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry, we characterize the fluid mechanics in a canonical configuration representative of an intracranial aneurysm treated with a FDS: a spherical cavity on the side of a curved round pipe covered with a metal mesh formed by an actual medical FDS. This porous mesh coverage is the focus of Part 2 of the paper, characterizing the effects of parent vessel $Re$, $De$ and pulsatility, $Wo$, on the fluid dynamics, compared with the canonical configuration with no impediments to flow into the cavity that is described in Part 1 (Chassagne et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 915, 2021, A123). Coverage with a FDS markedly reduces the flow $Re$ in the aneurysmal cavity, creating a viscous-dominated flow environment despite the parent vessel $Re>100$. Under steady flow conditions, the topology that forms inside the cavity is shown to be a function of the parent vessel $De$. At low values of $De$, flow enters the cavity at the leading edge and remains attached to the wall before exiting at the trailing edge, a novel behaviour that was not found under any conditions of the high-$Re$, unimpeded cavity flow described in Part 1. Under these conditions, flow in the cavity co-rotates with the direction of the free-stream flow, similar to Stokes flow in a cavity. As $De$ increases, the flow along the leading edge begins to separate, and the recirculation zone grows with increasing $De$, until, above $De \approx 180$, the flow inside the cavity is fully recirculating, counter-rotating with respect to the free-stream flow. Under pulsatile flow conditions, the vortex inside the cavity progresses through the same cycle – switching from attached and co-rotating with the free-stream flow at the beginning of the cycle (low velocity and positive acceleration) to separated and counter-rotating as $De$ reaches a critical value. The location of separation within the harmonic cycle is shown to be a function of both $De$ and $Wo$. The values of aneurysmal cavity $Re$ based on both the average velocity and the circulation inside the cavity are shown to increase with increasing values of $De$, while $Wo$ is shown to have little influence on the time-averaged metrics. As $De$ increases, the strength of the secondary flow in the parent vessel grows, due to the inertial instability in the curved pipe, and the flow rate entering the cavity increases. Thus, the effectiveness of FDS treatment to exclude the aneurysmal cavity from the haemodynamic stresses is compromised for aneurysms located on high-curvature arteries, i.e. vessels with high $De$, and this can be a fluid mechanics criterion to guide treatment selection.

This study experimentally investigates reacting jets in cross-flow (RJICF), considering flame/shear layer offset, momentum flux ratio ($J$) and density ratio ($S$) effects. These results demonstrate that non-reacting JICF and RJICF can exhibit very similar or completely different dynamics and controlling physics, depending upon streamwise and radial flame location. Consistent with prior measurements of Getsinger et al. (Exp. Fluids, vol. 53 (3), 2012, pp. 783–801), spatial amplification rates of shear layer vortex (SLV) structures increased with decreasing $S$ for non-reacting cases. Similar $S$ dependencies exist for reacting cases in which the flame lay outside the jet shear layer, whose flow topology is also quite similar to non-reacting cases, albeit with reduced SLV growth rates. However, although the reacting cases have lower growth rates, these SLV structures ultimately reach approximately the same peak strength as in the non-reacting cases. Finally, the SLV decay rate in both non-reacting and reacting cases was found to similarly scale inversely with the initial SLV growth rate. As such, primarily inertial mechanisms govern SLV growth and decay for reacting cases where the flame lies outside the shear layer. In contrast, very different behaviour is exhibited by reacting cases where the flame lies inside the shear layer, where the locally increased viscosity exerts significant influences. In these reacting cases, SLV roll-up is completely suppressed and the entire jet column undulates over a long length scale relative to the jet diameter. As such, the relative roles of inertial and viscous mechanisms in controlling combustion influences on the SLV dynamics, changes markedly with shear layer–flame offset.

The structure of the steady boundary layer in the airflow over young wind waves is studied in detail using extensive data accumulated in our laboratory as well as in additional laboratory facilities and in field measurements. Following the approach adopted in studies of turbulent flow over solid rough surfaces, the coupling between the spatial evolution of wind waves and wind velocity profiles over the water is analysed. The roughness of the moving water surface under wind is not constant; wind waves that constitute the roughness elements are unsteady, random and three-dimensional. The effective water surface roughness increases with airflow velocity as well as with downstream distance. Nevertheless, the existence of wall similarity as observed in a flow over solid surfaces is demonstrated; a fully rough boundary layer is obtained for young wind waves at diverse operational conditions. This approach enables quantitative study of the coupling between the airflow and local wind wave characteristics.

This paper provides a comprehensive explanation for the lift force acting on a freely deformable bubble rising in a linear shear flow and examines how the lift force scales with the undisturbed shear rate in cases governed by different lift force mechanisms. Four distinct flow mechanisms are identified from previous studies, and the associated bubble-induced vorticity dynamics are outlined. We provide a theoretical framework to qualitatively explain the lift force acting on a bubble in terms of moments of the bubble-induced vorticity. We support our theoretical framework with three-dimensional multiphase direct numerical simulations to illustrate how the vorticity dynamics associated with the four mechanisms generate the lift force. These findings provide a comprehensive explanation for the behaviour of the lift force in a wide range of relevant governing parameters. Additionally, our simulation results show how differently the lift force scales with the shear rate, depending on the dominating lift force mechanism. These results indicate that the shear rate should, in general, be accounted for in highly viscous flows (low Galilei numbers) or at significant bubble deformations (moderate-to-high Eötvös numbers) when modelling the lift force coefficient.
