The relation ≪ (is a homomorphic image of) between (linear) order types has properties similar to those of the better known relation ≤ (is embeddable in). For example, the order type η of the rationals not only embeds every countable order type but also maps homomorphically onto . If is scattered, then can be embedded in (ω* + ω)α for some α < ω1. In that case, is also a homomorphic image of (ω* + ω)α [Lan 2]. If is uncountable, then for some uncountable ordinal α, α ≪, α* ≪, or η ≪. Proofs of these facts are much the same for ≤ and ≪.

The main theorem of [Lav 1] implies that the embedding relation better-quasiorders the set of countable order types. Our main theorem (§3) states the analogous result for the homomorphism relation. As a consequence, if 0, 1, … is an infinite sequence of countable order types, then there are i, j, i < j, such that i, is a homomorphic image of j. We observed in [Lan 1] that if this is true, then for each countable order type there is a sentence of Lω1ω such that if is a countable order type, then satisfies if and only if is a homomorphic image of . In fact, the motivation for the work leading to this paper came from this observation.

On the negative side, it is pointed out (§3) that our theorem cannot be extended as far as that of [Lav 1].

Fields of characteristic zero with several commuting derivations can be treated as fields equipped with a space of derivations that is closed under the Lie bracket. The existentially closed instances of such structures can then be given a coordinate-free characterization in terms of differential forms. The main tool for doing this is a generalization of the Frobenius Theorem of differential geometry.

Let be a countable saturated structure, and assume that D(v) is a strongly minimal formula (without parameter) such that is the algebraic closure of D(). We will prove the two following theorems:

Theorem 1. If G is a subgroup of Aut() of countable index, there exists a finite set A in such that every A-strong automorphism is in G.

Theorem 2. Assume that G is a normal subgroup of Aut() containing an element g such that for all n there exists X ⊆ D() such that Dim(g(X)/X) > n. Then every strong automorphism is in G.

This paper constitutes a short report on the proof theory which developed in the course of an investigation of Essenin-Volpin's foundational studies (see his paper in Infinitistic methods.) The Infinitistic methods paper is primarily concerned with proving the consistency of ZF. His arguments employ some very unusual ideas, especially that of the possibility of different length natural number series. The modal setting which he uses for these ideas and which is really all important is not reflected in the present paper. Only a simple representation of this idea is considered, namely, the use of *N, the nonstandard natural numbers, together with N, the standard natural numbers, to play the roles of a “long” and a “short” number series.

It will be useful to make a few general remarks before beginning on the technical details. These remarks are especially directed towards those people who have read Essenin-Volpin's work, the above-mentioned paper in particular and the one appearing in the proceedings of the 1968 Conference on Intuitionism and Proof Theory at Buffalo, New York.

I want to draw a comparison between the ultra-intuitionistic position of Essenin-Volpin on the one hand with the intuitionistic and realistic positions on the foundations of mathematics on the other hand. Intuitionism makes a transition from the traditional mathematical position (realism) that the rules of mathematical reasoning must be constructed so as to preserve truth (as known by an omniscient being about “the real world” of abstract mathematical objects) to the position that the rules of mathematical reasoning must be in accord with the process of knowing (performed by the “ideal mathematician” or “creative subject”) about the world of mental constructions. Ultra-intuitionism deepens and extends this transition to the position that the fundamental rules of mathematical reasoning must be in accord with processes of knowing accessible to human beings.

Unfoldable cardinals are preserved by fast function forcing and the Laver-like preparations that fast functions support. These iterations show, by set-forcing over any model of ZFC, that any given unfoldable cardinal κ can be made indestructible by the forcing to add any number of Cohen subsets to κ.

In this paper we present two calculi for intuitionistic logic. The first one. IG, is characterized by the fact that every proof-search terminates and termination is reached without jeopardizing the subformula property. As to the second one, SIC, proof-search terminates, the subformula property is preserved and moreover proof-search is performed without any recourse to metarules, in particular there is no need to back-track. As a consequence, proof-search in the calculus SIC is accomplished by a single tree as in classical logic.

Every complete first order theory has a corresponding complete theory in continuous logic, called the randomization theory. It has two sorts, a sort for random elements of models of the first order theory, and a sort for events. In this paper we establish connections between properties of countable models of a first order theory and corresponding properties of separable models of the randomization theory. We show that the randomization theory has a prime model if and only if the first order theory has a prime model. And the randomization theory has the same number of separable homogeneous models as the first order theory has countable homogeneous models. We also show that when T has at most countably many countable models, each separable model of TR is uniquely characterized by a probability density function on the set of isomorphism types of countable models of T. This yields an analogue for randomizations of the results of Baldwin and Lachlan on countable models of ω1-categorical first order theories.

We consider the problem of recognizing important properties of logical calculi and find complexity bounds for some decidable properties. For a given logical system L, a property P of logical calculi is called decidable over L if there is an algorithm which for any finite set Ax of new axiom schemes decides whether the calculus L + Ax has the property P or not. In [11] the complexity of tabularity, pre-tabularity. and interpolation problems over the intuitionistic logic Int and over modal logic S4 was studied, also we found the complexity of amalgamation problems in varieties of Heyting algebras and closure algebras.

In the present paper we deal with positive calculi. We prove NP-completeness of tabularity, DP-hardness of pretabularity and PSPACE-completeness of interpolation problem over Int+. In addition to above-mentioned properties, we consider Beth's definability properties. Also we improve some complexity bounds for properties of superintuitionistic calculi.

A remarkable result of Henson and Ross [HR] states that if a function whose graph is Souslin in the product of two hyperfinite sets in an ℵ1 saturated nonstandard universe possesses a certain nice property (capacity) then there exists an internal subfunction of the given one possessing the same property. In particular, they prove that every 1-1 Souslin function preserves any internal counting measure, and show that every two internal sets A and B with ∣A∣/∣B∣ ≈ 1 are Borel bijective. As a supplement to the last-mentioned result of Henson and Ross, Keisler, Kunen, Miller and Leth showed [KKML] that two internal sets A and B are bijective by a countably determined bijection if and only if ∣A∣/∣B∣ is finite and not infinitesimal.

In this paper we first show that injective Borel functions map Borel sets into Borel sets, a fact well known in classical descriptive set theory. Then, we extend the result of Henson and Ross concerning the Borel bijectivity of internal sets whose quotient of cardinalities is infinitely closed to 1. We prove that two Borel sets, to which we may assign a counting measure not equal to 0 or ∞, are Borel bijective if and only if they have the same counting measure ≠0, ∞. This, together with the similar characterization for Souslin and measurable countably determined sets, extends the above-mentioned results from [HR] and [KKML].

An r.e. set A is nowhere simple if for every r.e. set We such that We − A is infinite, there is an infinite r.e. set W such that W ⊆ We − A. The definition of nowhere simple sets is due to R. Shore in [4]. In [4], Shore studied various properties of nowhere simple sets and showed that they could be used to give an elegant and simple proof of the fact that every nontrivial class of r.e. sets C closed under recursive isomorphisms is an automorphism base for , the lattice of r.e. sets modulo finite sets, (that is, an automorphism α of is completely determined by its action on C; see Theorem 8 of [4]). Shore also defined the notion of effectively nowhere simple sets.

Definition. An r.e. set A is effectively nowhere simple if there is a recursive function f such that for every i, Wf(i) ⊆ Wi − A and Wf(i) is infinite iff Wi − A is infinite. f is called a witness function for A.

Other than to produce examples of effectively nowhere simple sets and nowhere simple sets that are not effectively nowhere simple, Shore did not concern himself with the properties of effectively nowhere simple sets since he felt that effectively nowhere simple sets were unlikely to be lattice invariant in either E, the lattice of r.e. sets, or in .

In [5], Kleene extended previous notions of computations to objects of higher finite type in the maximal type-structure of functionals given by:

Tp(0) = N = the natural numbers,

Tp(n + 1) = NTp(n) = the set of total maps from Tp(n) to N.

He gave nine schemata, S1–S9, for describing algorithms for computations from a finite list of functionals, and indices to denote these algorithms. It is generally agreed that S1-S9 give a natural concept of computations in higher types.

The type-structure of countable functions, Ct(n) for n ϵ N, was first developed by Kleene [6] and Kreisel [7]. It arises from the notions of ‘constructivity’, and has been extensively studied as a domain for higher type recursion theory. Each countable functional is globally described by a countable amount of information coded in its associate, and it is determined locally by a finite amount of information about its argument. The countable functionals are well summarised in Normann [9], and treated in detail in Normann [8].

The purpose of this paper is to discuss a generalisation of the countable functionals, which we shall call the countably based functions, Cb(n) for n ϵ N. It is suggested by the notions of ‘predicativity’, in which we view N as a completed totality, and build higher types on it in a constructive manner. So we shall allow quantification over N and include application of 2E in our schemata. Each functional is determined locally by a countable amount of information about its argument, and so is globally described by a continuum of information coded in its associate, which will now be a type-2 object. This generalisation, obtained via associates, was proposed by Wainer, and seems to reflect topological properties of the countable functionals.

Elementary Recursive Nonstandard Analysis, in short ERNA, is a constructive system of nonstandard analysis with a PRA consistency proof, proposed around 1995 by Patrick Suppes and Richard Sommer. Recently, the author showed the consistency of ERNA with several transfer principles and proved results of nonstandard analysis in the resulting theories (see [12] and [13]). Here, we show that Weak König's lemma (WKL) and many of its equivalent formulations over RCA0 from Reverse Mathematics (see [21] and [22]) can be ‘pushed down’ into the weak theory ERNA, while preserving the equivalences, but at the price of replacing equality with equality ‘up to infinitesimals’. It turns out that ERNA plays the role of RCA0 and that transfer for universal formulas corresponds to WKL.

A new method of “minimal” readability is proposed and applied to show that the definable functions of Heyting arithmetic (HA)—functions f such that HA ⊢ ∀x∃!yA(x, y) ⇒ for all m, A(m, f(m)) is true, where A(x, y) may be an arbitrary formula of ℒ(HA) with only x,y free—are precisely the provably recursive functions of the classical Peano arithmetic (PA), i.e., the < ε0-recursive functions. It is proved that, for prenex sentences provable in HA, Skolem functions may always be chosen to be < ε0-recursive. The method is extended to intuitionistic finite-type arithmetic, , and elementary analysis. Generalized forms of Kreisel's characterization of the provably recursive functions of PA and of the no-counterexample-interpretation for PA are consequently derived.

In this paper, we analyze structures of Zermelo degrees via a list of four degree theoretic questions (see §2) in various fine structure extender models, or under large cardinal assumptions. In particular we give a detailed analysis of the structures of Zermelo degrees in the Mitchell model for ω many measurable cardinals. It turns out that there is a profound correlation between the complexity of the degree structures at countable cofinality singular cardinals and the large cardinal strength of the relevant cardinals. The analysis applies to general degree notions, Zermelo degree is merely the author’s choice for illustrating the idea.

I0(λ) is the assertion that there is an elementary embedding j : L(Vλ+1) → L(Vλ+1) with critical point < λ. We show that under I0(λ), the structure of Zermelo degrees at λ is very complicated: it has incomparable degrees, is not dense, satisfies Posner–Robinson theorem etc. In addition, we show that I0 together with a mild condition on the critical point of the embedding implies that the degree determinacy for Zermelo degrees at λ is false in L(Vλ+1). The key tool in this paper is a generic absoluteness theorem in the theory of I0, from which we obtain an analogue of Perfect Set Theorem for “projective” subsets of Vλ+1, and the Posner–Robinson follows as a corollary. Perfect Set Theorem and Posner–Robinson provide evidences supporting the analogy between $$AD$$ over L(ℝ) and I0 over L(Vλ+1), while the failure of degree determinacy is one for disanalogy. Furthermore, we conjecture that the failure of degree determinacy for Zermelo degrees at any uncountable cardinal is a theorem of $$ZFC$$.

We associate with any abstract logic L a family F(L) consisting, intuitively, of the limit ultrapowers which are complete extensions in the sense of L.

For every countably generated [ω, ω]-compact logic L, our main applications are:

(i) Elementary classes of L can be characterized in terms of ≡L only.

(ii) If and are countable models of a countable superstable theory without the finite cover property, then .

(iii) There exists the “largest” logic M such that complete extensions in the sense of M and L are the same; moreover M is still [ω, ω]-compact and satisfies an interpolation property stronger than unrelativized ⊿-closure.

(iv) If L = Lωω(Qx), then cf(ωx) > ω and λω < ωx, for all λ < ωx.

We also prove that no proper extension of Lωω generated by monadic quantifiers is compact. This strengthens a theorem of Makowsky and Shelah. We solve a problem of Makowsky concerning Lκλ-compact cardinals. We partially solve a problem of Makowsky and Shelah concerning the union of compact logics.

In this paper, we introduce the systems ns-ACA0 and ns-WKL0 of non-standard second-order arithmetic in which we can formalize non-standard arguments in ACA0 and WKL0, respectively. Then, we give direct transformations from non-standard proofs in ns-ACA0 or ns-WKL0 into proofs in ACA0 or WKL0.

We introduce the notion of infinitary interpretation of structures. In general, an interpretation between structures induces a continuous homomorphism between their automorphism groups, and furthermore, it induces a functor between the categories of copies of each structure. We show that for the case of infinitary interpretation the reversals are also true: every Baire-measurable homomorphism between the automorphism groups of two countable structures is induced by an infinitary interpretation, and every Baire-measurable functor between the set of copies of two countable structures is induced by an infinitary interpretation. Furthermore, we show that the complexities are maintained in the sense that if the functor is ${\bf{\Delta }}_\alpha ^0$, then the interpretation that induces it is ${\rm{\Delta }}_\alpha ^{in}$ up to ${\bf{\Delta }}_\alpha ^0$ equivalence.

We characterize Morita equivalence of theories in the sense of Johnstone in terms of a new syntactic notion of a common definitional extension developed by Barrett and Halvorson for cartesian, regular, coherent, geometric and first-order theories. This provides a purely syntactic characterization of the relation between two theories that have equivalent categories of models naturally in any Grothendieck topos.

The theory of valued difference fields (K, σ, υ,) depends on how the valuation υ interacts with the automorphism σ. Two special cases have already been worked out - the isometric case, where υ(σ(x)) = υ(x) for all x Є K, has been worked out by Luc Belair, Angus Macintyre and Thomas Scanlon; and the contractive case, where υ(σ(x)) > nυ(x) for all x Є K× with υ(x) > 0 and n Є ℕ, has been worked out by Salih Azgin. In this paper we deal with a more general version, the multiplicative case, where υ(σ(x)) = ρ · υ(x), where ρ (> 0) is interpreted as an element of a real-closed field. We give an axiomatization and prove a relative quantifier elimination theorem for this theory.
