This paper is concerned with two aspects of the theory of measures on compact totally ordered spaces (the topology is to be the order topology). In Section 2, we clarify a recent construction of Sapounakis [11, 12] and, in so doing, we are able to say a little more about it. It should be added here that Sapounakis had other ends in view. To be precise, let I be the closed unit interval [0, 1] and let λ be Lebesgue measure on I. We shall construct another totally ordered set Ĩ which is compact in its order topology, a continuous increasing surjection τ : Ĩ → I with the property that card τ−1(t) = 2 for all t ∈ ]0,1[ (these brackets denote the open interval), and a measure on Ĩ such that τ() = λ. Then the following theorem holds.

The method of the large sieve has played a very important role in number theory. It turns out that estimates of exponential sums are of basic importance for large sieve inequalities. Let

The prototype of isoperimetric problems is to minimize the surface area of a convex body with given volume. The minimal body is naturally the suitable ball. The solution to this problem in the planar case was already known to the ancient Greeks. In the higher dimensional cases, the first proofs were provided with the help of Steiner's symmetrization method towards the end of the last century. Important later contributors are, among others, Minkowski, Blaschke, Hadwiger. By their work, the optimality of the ball has been also verified for a much wider class of sets (see [14]).

We show that smooth-supported multiplicative functions $f$ are well distributed in arithmetic progressions $a_{1}a_{2}^{-1}\;(\text{mod}~q)$ on average over moduli $q\leqslant x^{3/5-\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}}$ with $(q,a_{1}a_{2})=1$.

If K is a convex body in d and 1≤k≤d − 1, we define Pk(K) to be the Minkowski sum or Minkowski average of all the projections of K onto k-dimensional subspaces of d. The operator Pd − 1, was first introduced by Schneider, who showed that, if Pd − 1(K) = cK, then K is a ball. More recently, Spriestersbach showed that, if Pd − 1(K) = cK then K = M. In addition, she gave stability versions of this result and Schneider's. We will describe further injectivity results for the operators Pk. In particular, we will show that Pk is injective if k≤d/2 and that P2 is injective in all dimensions except d = 14, where it is not injective.

In a recent paper Northcott [3] introduced the notion of the reduction number of a one-dimensional local ring, and demonstrated its importance in the theory of abstract dilatations. In the present paper we define the reduction number of an ideal which is primary for the maximal ideal of a one-dimensional local ring, and show that under certain necessary and sufficient conditions the reduction numbers can take only a finite number of values.

We present simple constructions of spaces which are countably K -determined, Čech analytic and not K-analytic. We prove that the statement “every uncountable K-analytic space contains an uncountable compact subset” is equivalent to b > ω, extending a result of the first author.

This paper studies the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions of the following problem:

Also δ(x) = dist(x, ∂Ω), a ∈ Lp and λ < 0 is a real parameter. By using the direct method of the calculus of variations, Ekeland's Variational Principle and an idea of G. Tarantello, it is proved that problem (*) has at least two positive weak solutions if λ is small enough.

Recently, Szczepariski [11] has constructed examples of aspherical manifolds with the ℚ-homology of a sphere. More precisely, if k is a commutative ring of characteristic zero containing , the following theorem holds.

Two results are proved involving the quantitative illumination parameter B(d) of the unit ball of a d-dimensional normed space introduced by Bezdek (1992). The first is that B(d) = O(2dd2 log d). The second involves Steiner minimal trees. Let v(d) be the maximum degree of a vertex, and s(d) that of a Steiner point, in a Steiner minimal tree in a d-dimensional normed space, where both maxima are over all norms. Morgan (1992) conjectured that s(d) ≤ 2d, and Cieslik (1990) conjectured that v(d) ≤ 2(2d − 1). It is proved that s(d) ≤ v(d) ≤ B(d) which, combined with the above estimate of B(d), improves the previously best known upper bound v(d) < 3d.

It is shown that a convex body is determined uniquely among all convex bodies by the volumes of its projections onto all hyperplanes through the origin if and only if it is a parallelotope.

One of the most fruitful results from Minkowski’s geometric viewpoint on number theory is his so-called first fundamental theorem. It provides an optimal upper bound for the volume of a $0$ -symmetric convex body whose only interior lattice point is the origin. Minkowski also obtained a discrete analog by proving optimal upper bounds on the number of lattice points in the boundary of such convex bodies. Whereas the volume inequality has been generalized to any number of interior lattice points already by van der Corput in the 1930s, a corresponding result for the discrete case remained to be proven. Our main contribution is a corresponding optimal relation between the number of boundary and interior lattice points of a $0$ -symmetric convex body. The proof relies on a congruence argument and a difference set estimate from additive combinatorics.

The aim of the paper is to establish estimates in weighted Sobolev spaces for the solutions of the Dirichlet problems on snowflake domains, as well as uniform estimates for the solutions of the Dirichlet problems on pre-fractal approximating domains.

The question, whether a given element of a C*-algebra has an image of rank one in some faithful representation, was studied in [3]. Such elements were characterised there by the property of being “single” (as defined below). As was pointed out in [3], Section 5, this criterion fails for general Banach algebras and the purpose of this paper is to provide a stronger condition giving the required representation property for any semi-simple Banach algebra.
