Works by O’Grady allow to associate with a two-dimensional Gushel–Mukai (GM) variety, which is a K3 surface, a double Eisenbud–Popescu–Walter (EPW) sextic. We characterize the $K3$ surfaces whose associated double EPW sextic is smooth. As a consequence, we are able to produce symplectic actions on some families of smooth double EPW sextics which are hyper-Kähler manifolds.
We also provide bounds for the automorphism group of GM varieties in dimension 2 and higher.
We give a vanishing and classification result for holomorphic differential forms on smooth projective models of the moduli spaces of pointed K3 surfaces. We prove that there is no nonzero holomorphic k-form for $0<k<10$ and for even $k>19$. In the remaining cases, we give an isomorphism between the space of holomorphic k-forms with that of vector-valued modular forms ($10\leq k \leq 18$) or scalar-valued cusp forms (odd $k\geq 19$) for the modular group. These results are in fact proved in the generality of lattice-polarisation.
In this article, we study quasimaps to moduli spaces of sheaves on a $K3$ surface S. We construct a surjective cosection of the obstruction theory of moduli spaces of $\epsilon $-stable quasimaps. We then establish reduced wall-crossing formulas which relate the reduced Gromov–Witten theory of moduli spaces of sheaves on S and the reduced Donaldson–Thomas theory of $S\times C$, where C is a nodal curve. As applications, we prove the Hilbert-schemes part of the Igusa cusp form conjecture; higher-rank/rank-one Donaldson–Thomas correspondence with relative insertions on $S\times C$, if $g(C)\leq 1$; Donaldson–Thomas/Pandharipande–Thomas correspondence with relative insertions on $S\times \mathbb {P}^1$.
We construct a collection of families of higher Chow cycles of type $(2,1)$ on a two-dimensional family of Kummer surfaces, and prove that for a very general member, they generate a subgroup of rank $\ge 18$ in the indecomposable part of the higher Chow group. Construction of the cycles uses a finite group action on the family, and the proof of their linear independence uses Picard–Fuchs differential operators.
We prove that any hyper-Kähler sixfold $K$ of generalized Kummer type has a naturally associated manifold $Y_K$ of $\mathrm {K}3^{[3]}$ type. It is obtained as crepant resolution of the quotient of $K$ by a group of symplectic involutions acting trivially on its second cohomology. When $K$ is projective, the variety $Y_K$ is birational to a moduli space of stable sheaves on a uniquely determined projective $\mathrm {K}3$ surface $S_K$. As an application of this construction we show that the Kuga–Satake correspondence is algebraic for the K3 surfaces $S_K$, producing infinitely many new families of $\mathrm {K}3$ surfaces of general Picard rank $16$ satisfying the Kuga–Satake Hodge conjecture.
We study families of rational curves on irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a sufficiently ample linear system on a holomorphic symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$-type to contain a uniruled divisor covered by rational curves of primitive class. In particular, for any fixed $n$, we show that there are only finitely many polarization types of holomorphic symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$-type that do not contain such a uniruled divisor. As an application, we provide a generalization of a result due to Beauville–Voisin on the Chow group of $0$-cycles on such varieties.
For an algebraic K3 surface with complex multiplication (CM), algebraic fibres of the associated twistor space away from the equator are again of CM type. In this paper, we show that algebraic fibres corresponding to points at the same altitude of the twistor base ${S^2} \simeq \mathbb{P}_\mathbb{C}^1$ share the same CM endomorphism field. Moreover, we determine all the admissible Picard numbers of the twistor fibres.
In this work, we study the Humbert-Edge curves of type 5, defined as a complete intersection of four diagonal quadrics in ${\mathbb{P}}^5$. We characterize them using Kummer surfaces, and using the geometry of these surfaces, we construct some vanishing thetanulls on such curves. In addition, we describe an argument to give an isomorphism between the moduli space of Humbert-Edge curves of type 5 and the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus 2, and we show how this argument can be generalized to state an isomorphism between the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g=\frac{n-1}{2}$ and the moduli space of Humbert-Edge curves of type $n\geq 5$ where $n$ is an odd number.
We give a complete classification of finite subgroups of automorphisms of K3 surfaces up to deformation. The classification is in terms of Hodge theoretic data associated to certain conjugacy classes of finite subgroups of the orthogonal group of the K3 lattice. The moduli theory of K3 surfaces, in particular the surjectivity of the period map and the strong Torelli theorem allow us to interpret this datum geometrically. Our approach is computer aided and involves Hermitian lattices over number fields.
Let
$(S,L)$
be a general polarised Enriques surface, with L not numerically 2-divisible. We prove the existence of regular components of all Severi varieties of irreducible nodal curves in the linear system
$|L|$
, that is, for any number of nodes
$\delta =0, \ldots , p_a(L)-1$
. This solves a classical open problem and gives a positive answer to a recent conjecture of Pandharipande–Schmitt, under the additional condition of non-2-divisibility.
We prove that every element of order 2 in the Brauer group of a complex Kummer surface X descends to an Enriques quotient of X. In generic cases, this gives a bijection between the set ${\mathcal Enr}(X)$ of Enriques quotients of X up to isomorphism and the set of Brauer classes of X of order 2. For some K3 surfaces of Picard rank $20,$ we prove that the fibers of ${\mathcal Enr}(X)\to \mathrm {{Br}}(X)[2]$ above the nonzero points have the same cardinality.
Given a K3 surface X over a number field K with potentially good reduction everywhere, we prove that the set of primes of K where the geometric Picard rank jumps is infinite. As a corollary, we prove that either
$X_{\overline {K}}$
has infinitely many rational curves or X has infinitely many unirational specialisations.
Our result on Picard ranks is a special case of more general results on exceptional classes for K3 type motives associated to GSpin Shimura varieties. These general results have several other applications. For instance, we prove that an abelian surface over a number field K with potentially good reduction everywhere is isogenous to a product of elliptic curves modulo infinitely many primes of K.
In characteristic
$0$
, symplectic automorphisms of K3 surfaces (i.e., automorphisms preserving the global
$2$
-form) and non-symplectic ones behave differently. In this paper, we consider the actions of the group schemes
$\mu _{n}$
on K3 surfaces (possibly with rational double point [RDP] singularities) in characteristic p, where n may be divisible by p. We introduce the notion of symplecticness of such actions, and we show that symplectic
$\mu _{n}$
-actions have similar properties, such as possible orders, fixed loci, and quotients, to symplectic automorphisms of order n in characteristic
$0$
. We also study local
$\mu _n$
-actions on RDPs.
We introduce a holomorphic torsion invariant of log-Enriques surfaces of index two with cyclic quotient singularities of type
$\frac {1}{4}(1,1)$
. The moduli space of such log-Enriques surfaces with k singular points is a modular variety of orthogonal type associated with a unimodular lattice of signature
$(2,10-k)$
. We prove that the invariant, viewed as a function of the modular variety, is given by the Petersson norm of an explicit Borcherds product. We note that this torsion invariant is essentially the BCOV invariant in the complex dimension
$2$
. As a consequence, the BCOV invariant in this case is not a birational invariant, unlike the Calabi-Yau case.
O’Grady’s generalised Franchetta conjecture (GFC) is concerned with codimension 2 algebraic cycles on universal polarised K3 surfaces. In [4], this conjecture has been studied in the Betti cohomology groups. Following a suggestion of Voisin, we investigate this problem in the Deligne-Beilinson (DB) cohomology groups. In this paper, we develop the theory of Deligne-Beilinson cohomology groups on (smooth) Deligne-Mumford stacks. Using the automorphic cohomology group and Noether-Lefschetz theory, we compute the 4th DB-cohomology group of universal oriented polarised K3 surfaces with at worst an
$A_1$
-singularity and show that GFC for such family holds in DB-cohomology. In particular, this confirms O’Grady’s original conjecture in DB cohomology.
We call a packing of hyperspheres in n dimensions an Apollonian sphere packing if the spheres intersect tangentially or not at all; they fill the n-dimensional Euclidean space; and every sphere in the packing is a member of a cluster of
$n+2$
mutually tangent spheres (and a few more properties described herein). In this paper, we describe an Apollonian packing in eight dimensions that naturally arises from the study of generic nodal Enriques surfaces. The
$E_7$
,
$E_8$
and Reye lattices play roles. We use the packing to generate an Apollonian packing in nine dimensions, and a cross section in seven dimensions that is weakly Apollonian. Maxwell described all three packings but seemed unaware that they are Apollonian. The packings in seven and eight dimensions are different than those found in an earlier paper. In passing, we give a sufficient condition for a Coxeter graph to generate mutually tangent spheres and use this to identify an Apollonian sphere packing in three dimensions that is not the Soddy sphere packing.
We study triple covers of K3 surfaces, following Miranda (1985, American Journal of Mathematics 107, 1123–1158). We relate the geometry of the covering surfaces with the properties of both the branch locus and the Tschirnhausen vector bundle. In particular, we classify Galois triple covers computing numerical invariants of the covering surface and of its minimal model. We provide examples of non-Galois triple covers, both in the case in which the Tschirnhausen bundle splits into the sum of two line bundles and in the case in which it is an indecomposable rank 2 vector bundle. We provide a criterion to construct rank 2 vector bundles on a K3 surface S which determine a non-Galois triple cover of S. The examples presented are in any admissible Kodaira dimension, and in particular, we provide the constructions of irregular covers of K3 surfaces and of surfaces with geometrical genus equal to 2 whose transcendental Hodge structure splits in the sum of two Hodge structures of K3 type.
We prove that if X is a complex projective K3 surface and
$g>0$
, then there exist infinitely many families of curves of geometric genus g on X with maximal, i.e., g-dimensional, variation in moduli. In particular, every K3 surface contains a curve of geometric genus 1 which moves in a nonisotrivial family. This implies a conjecture of Huybrechts on constant cycle curves and gives an algebro-geometric proof of a theorem of Kobayashi that a K3 surface has no global symmetric differential forms.
We describe a method to show that certain elliptic surfaces do not admit purely inseparable multisections (equivalently, that genus 1 curves over function fields admit no points over the perfect closure of the base field) and use it to show that any non-Jacobian elliptic structure on a very general supersingular K3 surface has no purely inseparable multisections. We also describe specific examples of genus 1 fibrations on supersingular K3 surfaces without purely inseparable multisections.
We use Noether–Lefschetz theory to study the reduced Gromov–Witten invariants of a holomorphic-symplectic variety of
$K3^{[n]}$
-type. This yields strong evidence for a new conjectural formula that expresses Gromov–Witten invariants of this geometry for arbitrary classes in terms of primitive classes. The formula generalizes an earlier conjecture by Pandharipande and the author for K3 surfaces. Using Gromov–Witten techniques, we also determine the generating series of Noether–Lefschetz numbers of a general pencil of Debarre–Voisin varieties. This reproves and extends a result of Debarre, Han, O’Grady and Voisin on Hassett–Looijenga–Shah (HLS) divisors on the moduli space of Debarre–Voisin fourfolds.
