The baryon mass content (i.e. stellar and gas mass) of dark matter halos in the early Universe depends on both global factors – for example, ionising ultraviolet (UV) radiation background – and local factors – for example, star formation efficiency and assembly history. We use a lightweight semi-analytical model to investigate how both local and global factors impact the halo baryon mass content at redshifts of $z\geq 5$. Our model incorporates a time delay between when stars form and when they produce feedback of $0\leq t^d/\mathrm{Myr} \leq 30$, which can drive bursts of star formation, and a mass and redshift-dependent UV background, which captures the influence of cosmological reionisation on gas accretion onto halos. We use statistically representative halo assembly histories and assume that the cosmological gas accretion rate is proportional to the halo mass accretion rate. Delayed ($t^d$>0) feedback leads to oscillations in gas mass with cosmic time, behaviour that cannot be captured with instantaneous feedback ($t^d$=0). Highly efficient star formation drives stronger oscillations, while strong feedback impacts when oscillations occur; in contrast, inefficient star formation and weak feedback produce similar long-term behaviour to that observed in instantaneous feedback models. If the delayed feedback timescale is too long, a halo retains its gas reservoir but the feedback suppresses star formation. Our model predicts that lower mass systems (halo masses $m_\mathrm{h} \leq 10^7 \mathrm{M}_\odot$) at $z \leq 10$ should be strongly gas deficient ($m_\mathrm{g}\rightarrow 0$), whereas higher mass systems retain their gas reservoirs because they are sufficiently massive to continue accreting gas through cosmological reionisation. Interestingly, in higher mass halos, the median $m_\star/(m_\star+m_\mathrm{g}) \simeq 0.01-0.05$, but is a factor of 3–5 smaller when feedback is delayed. Our model does not include seed supermassive black hole feedback, which is necessary to explain massive quenched galaxies in the early Universe.

This study builds upon our prior work to further explore and unravel the effects of saturated thermal conduction within a viscous resistive MHD framework on the intricate transport mechanisms of angular momentum and energy in disc-jet systems. We conducted a series of 2.5-dimensional non-relativistic time-dependent numerical simulations using the PLUTO code. Employing a saturation parameter spanning [0.002-0.01], our results are consistent with previous investigations that omitted consideration of thermal conduction, affirming the established understanding that kinetic torque plays a predominant role in governing the total accretion angular momentum, surpassing the magnetic contribution within the disc. At the initial time steps of our calculations, we find that thermal conduction enhances this kinetic contribution, while concurrently diminishing the effect of magnetic contribution. In contrast to the prevailing influence of kinetic torque within the disc, we also assert the magnetic torque as the primary contributor to the total ejection angular momentum. We further unveil that doubling the saturation parameter leads to bolstering of approximately $23.7\%$ in the integral dominance of magnetic torque compared to kinetic torque within the jet. Our findings reveal that doubling the effect of thermal conduction improves the integral total accretion power by approximately 2%, thereby slightly amplifying the energy content within the system and increasing overall energy output. We underscore that as the local energy dissipation within the disc intensifies, the significance of the enthalpy accretion flux increases at the expense of the jet power. We reveal that increasing the saturation parameter mitigates enthalpy accumulation within the disc, and further restricts the jet’s energy extraction from the disc. This limitation is determined in our analysis through the decrease in the integral ratio between the bipolar jet and liberated power of approximately $13.8\%$, for twice the strength of the saturation parameter. We identify the Poynting flux as the primary contributor to total jet power, with thermal conduction exerting minimal influence on magnetic contributions. Additionally, we emphasise the integration of jet enthalpy as another significant factor in determining overall jet power, highlighting a distinct correlation between the rise in saturation parameter and heightened enthalpy contribution. Moreover, we observe the promotion of Poynting flux over kinetic flux at advanced time steps of our simulations, a trend supported by the presence of thermal conduction, which demonstrates an integral increase of approximately $11.2\%$ when considering a doubling of the saturation parameter.

Ram-pressure stripping (RPS) is a process known to remove gas from satellite galaxies. Recent observational studies have found an increased ratio of active galactic nuclei (AGN) among the population of RPS galaxies compared to regular galaxies in the field. To test whether ram pressure (RP) can trigger an AGN, we perform a suite of hydrodynamical wind-tunnel simulations of a massive (Mstar = 1011 Mȯ) galaxy, with inclusion of star formation, stellar feedback and high resolution up to 39 pc. We find that RP increases the inflow of gas to the galaxy centre, which in turn can result in the enhanced BH accretion, as measured by the Bondi-Hoyle model. We also estimate pressure of outflows from our accretion rates and show that AGN feedback would play an important role on the early stages of stripping, while RP itself is not so strong.

Recent studies of Galactic evolution revealed that the dynamics of the stellar component might be one of the key factors when considering galactic habitability. We run an N-body simulation model of the Milky Way, which we evolve for 10 Gyr, to study the secular evolution of stellar orbits and the resulting galactic habitability related properties, i.e., the density of the stellar component and close stellar encounters. The results indicate that radial migrations are not negligible, even in a simple axisymmetric model with mild levels of dynamical heating, and that the net outward diffusion of the stellar component can populate galactic outskirts with habitable systems. Habitable environment is also likely even at sub-Solar galactocentric radii, because the rate of close encounters should not significantly degrade habitability. Stars that evolve from non-circular to stable nearly circular orbits typically migrate outwards, settling down in a broad Solar neighbourhood. The region between $R \approx 3$ kpc and $R \approx 12$ kpc represents the zone of radial mixing, which can blur the boundaries of the Galactic Habitable Zone (GHZ), as it has been conventionally understood. The present-day stable population of the stars in the Solar neighbourhood originates from this radial mixing zone, with most of the stars coming from the inner regions. The Solar system can be considered as a typical Milky Way habitable system because it migrated outwards from the metal-rich inner regions of the Disk and has a circular orbit in the present epoch. We conclude that the boundaries of the GHZ cannot be sharply confined for a given epoch because of the mixing caused by the stellar migrations and secular evolution of stellar orbits.

In this work, we present a methodology and a corresponding code-base for constructing mock integral field spectrograph (IFS) observations of simulated galaxies in a consistent and reproducible way. Such methods are necessary to improve the collaboration and comparison of observation and theory results, and accelerate our understanding of how the kinematics of galaxies evolve over time. This code, SimSpin, is an open-source package written in R, but also with an API interface such that the code can be interacted with in any coding language. Documentation and individual examples can be found at the open-source website connected to the online repository. SimSpin is already being utilised by international IFS collaborations, including SAMI and MAGPI, for generating comparable data sets from a diverse suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations.

Asymmetric emission of gravitational waves during mergers of black holes (BHs) produces a recoil kick, which can set a newly formed BH on a bound orbit around the centre of its host galaxy, or even completely eject it. To study this population of recoiling BHs we extract properties of galaxies with merging BHs from Illustris TNG300 simulation and then employ both analytical and numerical techniques to model unresolved process of BH recoil. This comparative analysis between analytical and numerical models shows that, on cosmological scales, numerically modelled recoiling BHs have a higher escape probability and predict a greater number of offset active galactic nuclei (AGN). BH escaped probability $>$40% is expected in 25$\%$ of merger remnants in numerical models, compared to 8$\%$ in analytical models. At the same time, the predicted number of offset AGN at separations ${>}5$ kpc changes from 58$\%$ for numerical models to 3$\%$ for analytical models. Since BH ejections in major merger remnants occur in non-virialised systems, static analytical models cannot provide an accurate description. Thus we argue that numerical models should be used to estimate the expected number density of escaped BHs and offset AGN.

Close galaxy flybys, interactions during which two galaxies inter-penetrate, are frequent and can significantly affect the evolution of individual galaxies. Equal-mass flybys are extremely rare and almost exclusively distant, while frequent flybys have mass ratios $q=0.1$ or lower, with a secondary galaxy penetrating deep into the primary. This can result in comparable strengths of interaction between the two classes of flybys and lead to essentially the same effects. To demonstrate this, emphasise and explore the role of the impact parameter further, we performed a series of N-body simulations of typical flybys with varying relative impact parameters $b/R_{\mathrm{vir},1}$ ranging from $0.114$ to $0.272$ of the virial radius of the primary galaxy. Two-armed spirals form during flybys, with radii of origin correlated with the impact parameter and strengths well approximated with an inverted S-curve. The impact parameter does not affect the shape of induced spirals, and the lifetimes of a distinguished spiral structure appear to be constant, $T_\mathrm{LF} \sim 2$ Gyr. Bars, with strengths anti-correlated with the impact parameter, form after the encounter is over in simulations with $b/R_{\mathrm{vir},1} \leq 0.178$ and interaction strengths $S\geq0.076$, but they are short-lived except for the stronger interactions with $S\geq0.129$. We showcase an occurrence of multiple structures (ring-like, double bar) that survives for an exceptionally long time in one of the simulations. Effects on the pre-existing bar instability, that develops much later, are diverse: from an acceleration of bar formation, little to no effect, to even bar suppression. There is no uniform correlation between these effects and the impact parameter, as they are secondary effects, happening later in a post-flyby stage. Classical bulges are resilient to flyby interactions, while dark matter halos can significantly spin up in the amount anti-correlated with the impact parameter. There is an offset angle between the angular momentum vector of the dark matter halo and that of a disc, and it correlates linearly with the impact parameter. Thus, flybys remain an important pathway for structural evolution within galaxies in the local Universe.

Pulsar wind nebulae (PWN) are fascinating systems and archetypal sources for high-energy astrophysics in general. Due to their vicinity, brightness, to the fact that they shine at multi-wavelengths, and especially to their long-living emission at gamma rays, modelling their properties is particularly important for the correct interpretation of the visible Galaxy. A complication in this respect is the variety of properties and morphologies they show at different ages. Here, we discuss the differences among the evolutionary phases of PWN, how they have been modeled in the past and what progresses have been recently made. We approach the discussion from a phenomenological, theoretical (especially numerical) and observational point of view, with particular attention to the most recent results and open questions about the physics of such intriguing sources.

Thanks to forthcoming large-scale surveys, a tremendous number of strong lenses will be discovered in the coming years. The gain in accuracy on H0 from such a large population of lensed quasars is a key question for the future of time-delay cosmography. In such context, lensed systems will have to be modeled in an automated way, with models that are sufficiently generic to apply to every lens. I explore the biases that may arise from unaccounted-for azimuthal structures in mass models. The non-modeled twists in lensing galaxies are expected to bias the shear inference but not H0. Disregarded ellipticity gradients, boxyness and discyness may impact the cosmological inference on a lens-by-lens basis. Nevertheless, the diversity of azimuthal mass profile in lenses balances the bias at a population level and the H0 inference can thus benefits from such large surveys.

Over the last two decades, strong gravitational lensing has emerged as a potential method for studying the nature and distribution of dark matter on sub-galactic scales. In addition to the main lens substructure, line-of-sight dark matter haloes contribute greatly to the subtle perturbations of lensed images. Line-of-sight haloes, unlike dark matter subhaloes, imprint distinct anisotropic and quadrupole signatures in the maps that depict the divergence and curl of the effective deflection field, respectively, giving rise to quadrupole moments of the image-plane averaged two-point correlation function of these maps. In terms of central density evolution and dark matter halo distribution, the shapes and amplitudes of the two-point function multipoles alter dramatically in the presence of warm dark matter and self-interacting dark matter. This method, in conjunction with upcoming large-scale surveys, provides the prospect of improving the constraints on dark matter at a critical time in strong gravitational lensing research.

HD34445 is a system that consists of a star and six planets. In some previous work, we investigated the dynamical stability of the system by means of numerical simulations. Here, we explore the system further by carrying out additional numerical experiments. A total of 100000 simulations confirm previous findings of the stability status of the system at the 1σ and 99% c.i. level. We find that only 2.7% of the systems with parameters varied within 1σ from the mean were unstable, while that percentage rose to about 28% for systems with parameter values taken within the 99% c.i. These preliminary results are presented and discussed herein.

In the final phase of terrestrial planet formation, planetary embryos and planetesimals are the building blocks for the growth of rocky planets. In this investigation, we study the dynamical behaviour of a circumstellar disk in an inclined binary star system. The disk consists of 2000 planetesimals and 25 embryos and is distributed between 1 and 4 au around the primary star. To compute the gravitational interaction of the whole system, we use our recently developed GPU N-body code GANBISS. GANBISS treats all collision as perfect merging and delivers the impact parameters that will be used to distinguish between different collision outcomes.

MHD avalanches involve small, narrowly localized instabilities spreading across neighbouring areas in a magnetic field. Cumulatively, many small events release vast amounts of stored energy. Straight cylindrical flux tubes are easily modelled, between two parallel planes, and can support such an avalanche: one unstable flux tube causes instability to proliferate, via magnetic reconnection, and then an ongoing chain of like events. True coronal loops, however, are visibly curved, between footpoints on the same solar surface. With 3D MHD simulations, we verify the viability of MHD avalanches in the more physically realistic, curved geometry of a coronal arcade. MHD avalanches thus amplify instability across strong solar magnetic fields and disturb wide regions of plasma. Contrasting with the behaviour of straight cylindrical models, a modified ideal MHD kink mode occurs, more readily and preferentially upwards in the new, curved geometry. Instability spreads over a region far wider than the original flux tubes and than their footpoints. Consequently, sustained heating is produced in a series of ‘nanoflares’ collectively contributing substantially to coronal heating. Overwhelmingly, viscous heating dominates, generated in shocks and jets produced by individual small events. Reconnection is not the greatest contributor to heating, but is rather the facilitator of those processes that are. Localized and impulsive, heating shows no strong spatial preference, except a modest bias away from footpoints, towards the loop’s apex. Remarkable evidence emerges of ‘campfire’ like events, with simultaneous, reconnection-induced nanoflares at separate sites along coronal strands, akin to recent results from Solar Orbiter. Effects of physically realistic plasma parameters, and the implications for thermodynamic models, with energetic transport, are discussed.

In this contribution, we explore the question on the formation of multiple massive stellar systems via disk fragmentation with the help of the highest-resolution simulations to date of a fragmenting disk in the context of massive star formation. The simulations start from a collapsing cloud of 200 solar masses, followed by the formation of an accretion disk that develops spiral arms and fragments. Due to the high resolution of our grid, we are able to self-consistently form the fragments without the need for a subgrid module such as sink particles. We track the formed fragments into the first stages of companion formation, which allows us to give an estimate of the multiplicity of the final system due to disk fragmentation. We find in total around ∼6 fragments, some at orbits of ∼ 1000 au, and some close (possibly spectroscopic) companions.

Expanding nebulae are produced by mass loss from stars, especially during late stages of evolution. We describe the algorithms and methods implemented in the radiation-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code PION for highly scalable simulations using static mesh-refinement. We present results from 3D MHD simulations of bow shocks around runaway massive stars, and of the expansion of a fast wind from a Wolf-Rayet star into the slow wind from a previous red supergiant phase of evolution. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will be the largest radio astronomy observatory ever built, providing unprecedented sensitivity over a very broad frequency band from 50 MHz to 15.3 GHz. The SKA’s low frequency component (SKA-Low), which will observe in the 50–350 MHz band, will be built at the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO) in Western Australia. It will consist of 512 stations each composed of 256 dual-polarised antennas, and the sensitivity of an individual station is pivotal to the performance of the entire SKA-Low telescope. The answer to the question in the title is, it depends. The sensitivity of a low frequency array, such as an SKA-Low station, depends strongly on the pointing direction of the digitally formed station beam and the local sidereal time (LST), and is different for the two orthogonal polarisations of the antennas. The accurate prediction of the SKA-Low sensitivity in an arbitrary direction in the sky is crucial for future observation planning. Here, we present a sensitivity calculator for the SKA-Low radio telescope, using a database of pre-computed sensitivity values for two realisations of an SKA-Low station architecture. One realisation uses the log-periodic antennas selected for SKA-Low. The second uses a known benchmark, in the form of the bowtie dipoles of the Murchison Widefield Array. Prototype stations of both types were deployed at the MRO in 2019, and since then have been collecting commissioning and verification data. These data were used to measure the sensitivity of the stations at several frequencies and over at least 24 h intervals, and were compared to the predictions described in this paper. The sensitivity values stored in the SQLite database were pre-computed for the X, Y, and Stokes I polarisations in 10 MHz frequency steps, $\scriptsize{1/2}$ hour LST intervals, and $5^\circ$ resolution in pointing directions. The database allows users to quickly and easily estimate the sensitivity of SKA-Low for arbitrary observing parameters (your favourite object) using interactive web-based or command line interfaces. The sensitivity can be calculated using publicly available web interface (http://sensitivity.skalow.link) or a command line python package (https://github.com/marcinsokolowski/station_beam), which can also be used to calculate the sensitivity for arbitrary pointing directions, frequencies, and times without interpolations.

In this work, we investigate the formation and early evolution phase of X-shaped radio galaxies using the Back-flow model. We show how the X-like winged morphology evolves over time in a tri-axial ambient medium, naturally. At this early stage of formation, we demonstrated that both the pair of jet lobes are actively pushing the ambient material out of their path of propagation, forming (X-ray) cavities that are surrounded by a shocked shell (X-ray bright rims) of swept materials. We also noticed how turbulent the wing is in comparison to the active lobe, generating sites of random shocks, indicating that the wings are not passively evolving structures. This study demonstrated that the ambiguous morphology observed in jets is also imprinted over the ambient medium, providing an alternative perspective in understanding the underlying physical process causing such ambiguities. Finally, we indicate that shearing instabilities cause mixing of ambient material at the shearing interface.

We re-evaluate the outer edge of orbital stability for possible exomoons orbiting the radial velocity planet discovered in the HD 23079 system. In this system, a solar-type star hosts a Jupiter-mass planet in a nearly circular orbit in the outer stellar habitable zone. The outer stability limit of exomoons is deduced using N-body and tidal migration simulations considering a large range of initial conditions, encompassing both prograde and retrograde orbits. In particular, we extend previous works by evaluating many values in the satellite mean anomaly to identify and exclude regions of quasi-stability. Future observations of this system can make use of our results through a scale factor relative to the currently measured minimum mass. Using a constant time lag tidal model (Hut 1981), we find that plausible tidal interactions within the system are insufficient to induce significant outward migration toward the theoretical stability limit. While current technologies are incapable of detecting exomoons in this system, we comment on the detectability of putative moons through Doppler monitoring within direct imaging observations in view of future research capacities.

The intense extreme ultraviolet radiation heats the upper atmosphere of close-in exoplanets and drives the atmospheric escape. The escaping process determines the planetary evolution of close-in planets. The mass loss rate depends on the UV flux at the planet. We introduce the relevant physical quantities which describe the dominant physics in the atmosphere. We find that the equilibrium temperature and the characteristic temperature determine whether the system becomes energy-limited or recombination-limited. We classify the observed close-in planets using the physical conditions. We also find that many of the Lyman-α absorptions detected planets receive intenser flux than the critical flux which can be determined from physical conditions. Our classification method can quantitatively reveal whether the EUV is not strong enough to drive the outflow or the Lyman- α absorption is not detected for some reason (e.g. stellar wind confinement). We also discuss the thermo-chemical structure of hydrodynamic simulations with the relevant physics.

In the title of this Symposium: “The rise and fall of star formation in galaxies”, the “falling” stage is mostly represented by so-called Green Valley galaxies. In this phase, quenching mechanisms operate, concerning the evolution from star formation towards quiescence. Therefore, GV galaxies are ideal laboratories to test cosmological simulations. This contribution focuses on the application of a novel, dust-independent, definition of the GV, to two of the most recent simulations: EAGLE and Illustris-TNG. We present some of the results, concerning the excess fraction of quenched galaxies in simulations, with respect to observational data from SDSS. We suggest possible causes for the mismatch.
