Smectite growth is of importance across various fields due to its abundance on the surface of both Earth and Mars. However, the impact of the crystallinity of initial materials on smectite growth processes remains poorly understood. In this study, the kinetic processes of smectite growth were examined via experimental synthesis of trioctahedral Mg-Ni saponites. Mg-Ni saponites were synthesized using mixed precursors, specifically end-member Mg-saponite and Ni-saponite, which exhibit different crystallinities. The crystal chemistry and morphology of samples were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy. The experimental results converge towards these main conclusions: (i) the formation of Mg-Ni saponite solid solutions are promoted when the precursors are small particles, whereas large-particle precursors limit their own dissolution and do not yield Mg-Ni saponite solid solutions under the experimental conditions; (ii) because Ni exhibits a greater stability within the saponite structure compared to Mg, the Mg-Ni-saponite solid solutions formed more easily from the mixture of Ni-saponite germs and well-crystallized Mg-saponite precursors than from the mixture of Mg-saponite germs and well-crystallized Ni-saponite precursors; (iii) the dissolution extent (DE) of precursor mixtures increases with longer synthesis time, higher synthesis temperature, and larger gap between synthesis temperature of precursors and of samples, and stabilizes once it reaches a certain value. Thus DE can be used to estimate the kinetics of Mg-Ni saponite crystallization from precursor mixtures. These results obtained from the experimental Mg-Ni saponite system are useful for predicting the evolution processes of smectite in natural systems.

The aim of this work was to investigate whether neoformed Ni-phyllosilicates can be observed and identified using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in combination with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The investigations focused on Ni-phyllosilicates formed from Ni-doped montmorillonite. The reaction conditions (pH 8, [Ni]initial = 660 and 3300 µM, 0.2 M Ca(NO3)2) employed were similar to those used in previous polarized extended X-ray absorption fine structure (P-EXAFS) investigations of neoformed Ni-phyllosilicates in a Ni-montmorillonite system.

The TEM investigations of Ni-doped montmorillonite revealed the presence of small, thin particles consisting of coherent stacks that yielded only three to five lattice fringes with spacings consistent with smectites. These small particles were neoformed phyllosilicates, based on the fact that the small particles were only observed in Ni-doped samples and their Ni content, as determined from EDS analysis, was high (up to 10 wt.% NiO). Furthermore, the particles did not possess the characteristic properties of montmorillonite particles, such as a 2:1 Si to Al ratio; instead these particles were rich in Si (up to 75 wt.% SiO2). Unlike montmorillonite, these particles did not contain any Fe. The particles were also significantly more resistant to electron beam damage than montmorillonite particles, and EXAFS measurements confirmed the presence of neoformed Ni-phyllosilicates.

The TEM study further indicates the presence of a variety of additional minerals (e.g. cristobalite, halloysite) and an X-ray amorphous Si-rich phase. A Ni signal could only be detected in the latter phase at high Ni loadings (403 µmol/g), suggesting that Ni uptake at low metal loadings (<90 µmol/g) is mainly controlled by the neoformation of phyllosilicates.

We investigated the sorption of Ni to gibbsite of two different surface areas at pH 7.5, in the presence and absence of citrate, over a time period of 180 days. Extended X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy was employed to elucidate the sorption mechanisms at the molecular level. In agreement with former results, Ni-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) formed in the presence of gibbsite of low surface area. However, gibbsite of high surface area suppressed the formation of the surface precipitate. Instead, two Al atoms neighboring Ni at distances of 2.95–2.98 Å indicated formation of an inner-sphere sorption complex, where each NiO6-octahedron shares edges with two AlO6-octahedra. Focused multiple scattering arising from Al atoms at a distance of 6 Å suggest that sorbed Ni(OH)2(OH2)4 monomers epitaxially extend the hexagonal arrangement of Al atoms in gibbsite. Only after 30 days or more was a small amount of LDH formed. The presence of citrate prevented the formation of LDH, while maintaining the formation of inner-sphere sorption complexes.

In the present study, the levels and probable public health risks of selected metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd and Pb) in nine wheat flour samples collected from Amhara, Oromia, South region, and the Strategic Food Reserve Agency were determined using FAAS and compared with results of prior studies and critical level. The wet digestion method using 65 % HNO3 and 72 % HClO4 in 300°C for 3 h was used when preparing the sample. Validation of the optimised digestion method was assessed using the spiking method, and an acceptable percent recovery from all metals. The levels of Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, Ni and Cd ranged between 8⋅5297 and 11⋅1535, 1⋅633 and 4⋅2346, 3⋅1875 and 8⋅5313, 2⋅3589 and 2⋅7719, 0⋅154 and 0⋅854, and 0⋅0411 and 0⋅216 mg/kg, respectively, for Ethiopian wheat flour, while the level of Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cd and Pb were ranged between 8⋅0099 and 8⋅1089, 1⋅663 and 1⋅6691, 4⋅5625 and 4⋅6250, 2⋅3015 and 2⋅3072, 0⋅9423 and 1⋅1346, 0⋅1593 and 0⋅1606, and 0⋅13 and 0⋅1381 mg/kg, respectively, for imported wheat flour. However, Pb had a concentration of less than 0⋅043 mg/kg for Ethiopian wheat flour. Findings indicate that Ethiopian wheat is comparatively higher in Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and Cd, but lower in Ni and Pb than imports. From the result of the study, it can be concluded that the level of heavy metals determined in this study was within the permissible limit, and no probable health risk because both the Hazard quotient (HQ) and the Hazard Index (HI) are found to be below 1⋅0 regarding study metals.

The strain rate sensitivity (m) of (Ni0.92Zr0.08)100−xAlx (0 ≤ x ≤ 4 at.%) eutectic with varying average lamellae thickness (λw) in the range of 39–275 nm has been investigated in the strain rate range of 8 × 10−5 and 8 × 10−3 s−1 at room temperature. The microstructure of the nano-/ultrafine eutectic composites (NECs) is comprised of alternate lamellae of fcc γ-Ni and Ni5Zr along with 20–31 vol% γ-Ni dendritic phase. The m value of all the investigated NECs lies between 0.0080 and 0.0102, whereas the activation volume (V*) has been estimated to be between 29.7b3 and 49.8b3. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy studies confirm the dislocation-mediated plastic flow including dislocation–lamellae interaction, and their pile-up at the interface, which result in the narrow variation of m for a wide range of λw due to its interlocked lamellar microstructure. A mathematical model has been developed to correlate the m with λw for the experimented NECs with wide microstructure length scale and solute content.

Neutron scattering is one of the most useful methods of studying the structure of matter, with applications to biomedical, structural, magnetic and energy-related materials. Neutron-scattering instruments are installed around research reactors or accelerator-based neutron sources, and neutron guides are critical components of these facilities. They are neutron-transport optical devices consisting of state-of-the-art mirrors often tens of meters long. Here we demonstrate a novel fabrication method of all-metallic neutron guides and axisymmetric mirrors by electroplating from precision mandrels. The process allows for the fabrication of single-piece all-metal guides of prismatic and axisymmetric shapes. We also demonstrate supermirror guides and axisymmetric focusing supermirrors produced with the same technology. We present the fabrication and tests of the multilayer-coated replicated guides and optic and show that the mandrel is reproduced with high fidelity and reliability. Such supermirror optics will provide game-changing improvements in neutron techniques.

Laser surface treatment is widely used as an engineering technique due to its special characteristics and several advantages over other surface modification techniques. In the present study, elemental mechanically pre-alloyed powder consisting of Niobium, Titanium and Nickel was deposited onto a grade 5 Titanium alloy substrates to form a high wear resistance coating. This was such that the surface mechanical properties of the base metal can be improved. The fabricated samples were characterised using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), micro hardness tester and wear machine. The deposited coatings were well bonded and consisted of various phases. Hardness was seen decrease with increase in Nb content while wear resistance increasing with increase in niobium content.

We report a simple and feasible technique for the formation of well-distributed nickel nanodot arrays on both oxidized and unoxidized silicon substrate by a conventional annealing process. The shape and distribution of nickel nanodots were maintained by adjusting annealing temperature, time and the SiO2 buffer layer thickness in between nickel film and the silicon substrate. The diffusion of nickel into the silicon is significantly reduced when the nickel film on the oxidized silicon substrate is annealed at high temperature. From this conventional annealing technique, we achieve a maximum nickel nanodots density up to (7.94±1.92) nanodot counts/µm2 on the oxidized silicon substrate with a well-defined spherical shape by adjusting the thickness of nickel film as well as buffer SiO2 layer. In the next experiment, the surface charge distribution on the nickel nanodot arrays were characterized through the Kelvin probe force microscope (KPFM) on tapping mode. It is found that the nickel nanodots can store and release the electric charges under an applied bias voltage.

P-type NiO powders with an average crystallite size of 16 nm as shown by x-ray diffraction analysis were produced via biosynthesis using cactus plant extract. SEM showed that the NiO powders consisted of particles with sizes in the 20-35 nm range. A cyclic voltammetric study of the NiO nanopowders showed a quasi-reversible redox processes with the NiO powder showing potential for pseudo capacitance. Through these findings the use of natural Cactus extracts is hereby shown to be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative for preparing Nickel oxide nanosized powders that can be of use in a variety of energy storage applications.

Mechanism for the hardening of two-phase Ni3Al-Ni3V intermetallic alloy to which 2 at.% Ta was added in different substitution manners for Ni, Al and V was presented, based on the microstructural observation, alloying behavior and lattice properties of the additive in the constituent phases. The hardening behavior was explained in terms of solid solution hardening in which the mixture rule in the volume fraction of the two constituent phases and the atomic size misfit evaluated from the changes of the lattice parameters were incorporated. Consequently, the hardening for the alloys in which the additives were substituted for Ni and V was attributed to solid solution hardening. On the other hand, the hardening for the alloy in which the additive was substituted for Al was attributed to the hardening due to microstructural refining in addition to the solid solution hardening.

The work focuses on the analysis of electrochemical corrosion in synthetic salt medium of the TiC/Ni-20Cr composite through the polarization curve technique at four exposure times (0, 6, 12 and 24 h). The composite was prepared by liquid infiltration of the liquid alloy into a porous body of TiC. It was found a continuous and homogeneous distribution of the reinforcing material in the interconnected matrix, having a residual porosity of 6.49 vol.%. According to the electrochemical results, in both samples the highest corrosion rate (CR) was obtained at 12 h exposure due to the rupture of the film of the corrosion products, allowing the interaction of chloride ions with the metal surface. The CR of the composite was slightly higher than that of the alloy at all exposure times, so that the presence of the reinforcing particles and the residual porosity reduce the corrosion resistance of the matrix in the composite. The mechanism of corrosion observed in the alloy and the composite was by pitting, however, the composite also presents crevice corrosion by a differential aeration cell mechanism formed between the metal matrix and the ceramic reinforcement, affected by the residual porosity as confirmed by electron microscopy examination.

The electrical properties of Radio Frequency Sputtered NiFeO and NiO films deposited on n and p-type Silicon is investigated for two different oxygen flows. Rectifying properties for Ni0.8Fe0.2O1+ α on n-Si showed Iforward/Ireverse >10,000 for α>0 and Iforward/Ireverse >50 for α<0. Both types of devices have opposite forward biases. Results suggest that NiFeO sputtered at high oxygen flow is p-type. For NiO and NiFeO on p-Si no strong rectifying properties were observed. The specific contact resistivity of Pt/Ni0.9Fe0.1O1+ α (α>0) was estimated from the difference between the two and four-point probe resistances (0.0007 ± 0.0003 Ω cm2). Using density functional theory calculations, density of state and charge density plots were obtained for systems modelled after experiment, showing that states introduced by O vacancies in NiFeO are localized and prefer locations near Ni explaining the observed hysteresis effects in the IV curves of devices sputtered at low oxygen flow.

We present density functional theory calculations to study the interplay between magnetic and structural properties in Ni-Co-Mn-Sn. The relative stability of austenite (cubic) and martensite (tetragonal) phases depends critically on the magnetic interactions between Mn atoms. While the standard generalized gradient approximation (GGA) stabilizes the latter phase, correlation effects beyond GGA tend to suppress this effect. Mn atoms treated as magnetic impurities can explain our results, where a delicate balance between magnetic interactions mediated by Ni d and Sn p orbitals determines the equilibrium structure of the crystal. Finally, we discuss the role of Co doping in stabilizing ferromagnetic austenite phases.

The work presents an electrochemical study of the corrosion behaviour of two TiC/Cu-Ni metal matrix composites with a content of 10 and 20 wt.% Ni immersed in synthetic seawater. The composites were synthesized by a capillary infiltration technique, obtaining dense materials TiC/Cu-10Ni and TiC/Cu-20 Ni with a residual porosity of 1.8 and 1.7%, respectively. The corrosion rate (CR) was evaluated from the techniques of polarization curves (PC), linear polarization resistance (LPR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Electrochemical measurements were carried out under static conditions, ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure at 24 hours exposure in the electrolytic medium. The corrosion rate is affected by the Ni content in the matrix, with less corrosion in the composite with a higher Ni content. The higher content of Ni in the Cu-Ni alloy provides higher passivation and stability to the corrosion products film that are absorbed on the composite surface. Microscopic examination (SEM) showed a characteristic morphology of a corrosion mechanism of the localized type (pits and crevices) generated by a differential aeration, where the TiC/Cu-10Ni composite showed greater degradation.

The crystal-chemical mechanisms by which transition metals are associated with goethite are fundamental to our understanding of the solubility and bioavailability of micronutrients and heavy metals in soils, and in the formation of laterite ore deposits. Transition metals such as Cr, Mn and Ni may sorb onto goethite by forming surface precipitates, surface complexes or by replacing Fe3+ in the goethite structure. In the work reported here, we investigated the local coordination environment of Cr, Mn and Ni in synthetic goethite using EXAFS spectroscopy. We demonstrate the isomorphous substitution for Fe3+ by Cr3+ (up to 8 mol.%), Mn3+ (up to 15 mol.%) and Ni2+ (up to 5 mol.%). We find, however, that the next-nearest-neighbour coordination environment changes with composition. The perturbations are likely to be responsible for limiting the accommodation of Cr3+, Mn3+ or Ni2+ in the FeOOH structure.

Fe-rich smectites from lateritic weathering profiles have previously been studied by XRD, ICP-AES, SEM-EDX and TEM-EDX analyses (Gaudin et al., 2004). These smectites exhibit intermediate chemistries between five end-members: Al-Fe beidellites, Al-Fe montmorillonites and Mg+Ni-saponite. The spectroscopic study by FTIR and XAS of these smectites reveals that: (1) tetrahedral Fe3+ is near or below the detection limit (0.05 cation for 4Si); (2) the large chemical variability is due to substitution of the three major cations (Fe, Al, Mg) within adjacent octahedra; (3) Ni is not concentrated in another clay phase such as Ni-kerolite and is located in the octahedral sheets of smectite; (4) octahedral cations are not randomly distributed but ordered in separated Fe, Al, Mg, Ni clusters; (5) the Mg-Ni saponite end-member actually appears as small trioctahedral clusters of Mg and Ni distributed within the dioctahedral smectite.

Assessing metal contamination of soils has been a difficult task because the metal concentration in soil is not directly correlated to its potential effects. We review an approach, termed the Terrestrial Biotic Ligand Model (TBLM), in which partitioning of metal from soil to soil solution is modelled and the metal in solution interacts with an organism, the biotic ligand, to cause toxicity. The toxicity is modulated by other cations in the soil solution, principally H+, Ca2+, and Mg2+. New results for the model using Ni as the toxic species and barley root elongation as the biological response are presented.

Binary transition metal oxides, such as NiCo2O4 (NCO) electrode have been demonstrated to be promising candidates for high-performance supercapacitors. However, their low electrical conductivity and poor stability made the electrochemical performance of most current NCO electrodes yet below the expectation. Herein, a novel electrode (NCC) consisting of binary transition metal (Ni–Co) nanoparticles embedded N-doped porous carbon matrix on graphite papers (GPs) has been developed with a high specific capacitance of 933.5 F/g at 1 mA/cm2 which is substantially 10 times than that of the NCO electrode (99.3 F/g) and much higher than those of most reported NCO based electrode. Moreover, this NCC electrode has an ultrahigh rate capability of 725.5 F/g at 10 mA/cm2 with excellent electrochemical durability (no capacitance decreases after 10,000 cycles). These results indicate a promising potential application of Ni–Co metal composite embedded carbon matrix for using as an effective electrode material in supercapacitors.

Designing advanced nonprecious metal electrocatalysts to reduce overpotential and accelerate hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has attracted considerable attention. However, improving the sluggish kinetics for electrocatalytic HER in alkaline media is still a great challenge. Herein, we found that amorphous NiO nanoclusters directly grown on nickel foam (NiO/NF) as a bifunctional HER catalyst demonstrated an ultrahigh electrocatalytic activity in alkaline environment. Such excellent HER performance of NiO/NF might mainly originate from the exposed interfaces of metallic Ni and amorphous NiO. The coordinatively unsaturated amorphous NiO domain is propitious to the adsorption of water molecule and the successive cleavage of HO–H bond, while the neighboring metallic Ni domain is beneficial to the adsorption of resulting Hads intermediate and recombination into hydrogen molecules, thus expediting the HER toward lower overpotential. These findings may open a window to the design and preparation of earth-abundant, low-cost metal oxide/metal electrocatalysts with desirable HER activities.

This work shows the electrochemical study of nickel (Ni) and TiC/Ni composite immersed in synthetic seawater. In order to characterize the corrosion process, polarization curves (PC) were carried out. All electrochemical measures were made under static conditions, room temperature, atmospheric pressure and 24 hours exposure time. An electrochemical cell with a typical three-electrode array was used. Effect of TiC as reinforcement into the Ni matrix was evaluated. According PC results, it is possible to point out that the corrosion rate (CR) of the TiC/Ni composite was higher than Ni corrosion rate. The obtained results indicate that the corrosion process of both materials is of mixed type, that is to say a process of transfer of load influenced by a mechanism of mass transfer. Observations through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that mechanism of corrosion was cells of differential aeration (difference of concentration of oxygen). The corrosion morphology was localized type (pits and crevice).
