In this paper, we study a connection between disintegration of measures and geometric properties of probability spaces. We prove a disintegration theorem, addressing disintegration from the perspective of an optimal transport problem. We look at the disintegration of transport plans, which are used to define and study disintegration maps. Using these objects, we study the regularity and absolute continuity of disintegration of measures. In particular, we exhibit conditions for which the disintegration map is weakly continuous and one can obtain a path of measures given by this map. We show a rigidity condition for the disintegration of measures to be given into absolutely continuous measures.
Feng and Huang [Variational principle for weighted topological pressure. J. Math. Pures Appl. (9)106 (2016), 411–452] introduced weighted topological entropy and pressure for factor maps between dynamical systems and established its variational principle. Tsukamoto [New approach to weighted topological entropy and pressure. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys.43 (2023), 1004–1034] redefined those invariants quite differently for the simplest case and showed via the variational principle that the two definitions coincide. We generalize Tsukamoto’s approach, redefine the weighted topological entropy and pressure for higher dimensions, and prove the variational principle. Our result allows for an elementary calculation of the Hausdorff dimension of affine-invariant sets such as self-affine sponges and certain sofic sets that reside in Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension.
We study the Diophantine transference principle over function fields. By adapting the approach of Beresnevich and Velani [‘An inhomogeneous transference principle and Diophantine approximation’, Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3)101 (2010), 821–851] to function fields, we extend many results from homogeneous to inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation. This also yields the inhomogeneous Baker–Sprindžuk conjecture over function fields and upper bounds for the general nonextremal scenario.
We introduce the notions of returns and well-aligned sets for closed relations on compact metric spaces and then use them to obtain non-trivial sufficient conditions for such a relation to have non-zero entropy. In addition, we give a characterization of finite relations with non-zero entropy in terms of Li–Yorke and DC2 chaos.
We prove that crossed products of fiberwise essentially minimal zero-dimensional dynamical systems, a class that includes systems in which all orbit closures are minimal, have isomorphic K-theory if and only if the dynamical systems are strong orbit equivalent. Under the additional assumption that the dynamical systems have no periodic points, this gives a classification theorem including isomorphism of the associated crossed product $C^*$-algebras as well. We additionally explore the K-theory of such crossed products and the Bratteli diagrams associated to the dynamical systems.
Fish often swim in crystallized group formations (schooling) and orient themselves against the incoming flow (rheotaxis). At the intersection of these two phenomena, we investigate the emergence of unique schooling patterns through passive hydrodynamic mechanisms in a fish pair, the simplest subsystem of a school. First, we develop a fluid dynamics-based mathematical model for the positions and orientations of two fish swimming against a flow in an infinite channel, modelling the effect of the self-propelling motion of each fish as a point-dipole. The resulting system of equations is studied to gain an understanding of the properties of the dynamical system, its equilibria and their stability. The system is found to have five types of equilibria, out of which only upstream swimming in in-line and staggered formations can be stable. A stable near-wall configuration is observed only in limiting cases. It is shown that the stability of these equilibria depends on the flow curvature and streamwise interfish distance, below critical values of which, the system may not have a stable equilibrium. The study reveals that simply through passive fluid dynamics, in the absence of any other feedback/sensing, we can justify rheotaxis and the existence of stable in-line and staggered schooling configurations.
With the increasing prevalence of big data and sparse data, and rapidly growing data-centric approaches to scientific research, students must develop effective data analysis skills at an early stage of their academic careers. This detailed guide to data modeling in the sciences is ideal for students and researchers keen to develop their understanding of probabilistic data modeling beyond the basics of p-values and fitting residuals. The textbook begins with basic probabilistic concepts, models of dynamical systems and likelihoods are then presented to build the foundation for Bayesian inference, Monte Carlo samplers and filtering. Modeling paradigms are then seamlessly developed, including mixture models, regression models, hidden Markov models, state-space models and Kalman filtering, continuous time processes and uniformization. The text is self-contained and includes practical examples and numerous exercises. This would be an excellent resource for courses on data analysis within the natural sciences, or as a reference text for self-study.
Stability is among the most important concepts in dynamical systems. Local stability is well-studied, whereas determining the ‘global stability’ of a nonlinear system is very challenging. Over the last few decades, many different ideas have been developed to address this issue, primarily driven by concrete applications. In particular, several disciplines suggested a web of concepts under the headline ‘resilience’. Unfortunately, there are many different variants and explanations of resilience, and often, the definitions are left relatively vague, sometimes even deliberately. Yet, to allow for a structural development of a mathematical theory of resilience that can be used across different areas, one has to ensure precise starting definitions and provide a mathematical comparison of different resilience measures. In this work, we provide a systematic review of the most relevant indicators of resilience in the context of continuous dynamical systems, grouped according to their mathematical features. The indicators are also generalised to be applicable to any attractor. These steps are important to ensure a more reliable, quantitatively comparable and reproducible study of resilience in dynamical systems. Furthermore, we also develop a new concept of resilience against certain nonautonomous perturbations to demonstrate how one can naturally extend our framework. All the indicators are finally compared via the analysis of a classic scalar model from population dynamics to show that direct quantitative application-based comparisons are an immediate consequence of a detailed mathematical analysis.
State-of-the-art machine-learning-based models are a popular choice for modeling and forecasting energy behavior in buildings because given enough data, they are good at finding spatiotemporal patterns and structures even in scenarios where the complexity prohibits analytical descriptions. However, their architecture typically does not hold physical correspondence to mechanistic structures linked with governing physical phenomena. As a result, their ability to successfully generalize for unobserved timesteps depends on the representativeness of the dynamics underlying the observed system in the data, which is difficult to guarantee in real-world engineering problems such as control and energy management in digital twins. In response, we present a framework that combines lumped-parameter models in the form of linear time-invariant (LTI) state-space models (SSMs) with unsupervised reduced-order modeling in a subspace-based domain adaptation (SDA) approach, which is a type of transfer-learning (TL) technique. Traditionally, SDA is adopted for exploiting labeled data from one domain to predict in a different but related target domain for which labeled data is limited. We introduced a novel SDA approach where instead of labeled data, we leverage the geometric structure of the LTI SSM governed by well-known heat transfer ordinary differential equations to forecast for unobserved timesteps beyond available measurement data by geometrically aligning the physics-derived and data-derived embedded subspaces closer together. In this initial exploration, we evaluate the physics-based SDA framework on a demonstrative heat conduction scenario by varying the thermophysical properties of the source and target systems to demonstrate the transferability of mechanistic models from physics to observed measurement data.
We present a unified theory for the almost periodicity of functions with values in an arbitrary Banach space, measures and distributions via almost periodic elements for the action of a locally compact abelian group on a uniform topological space. We discuss the relation between Bohr- and Bochner-type almost periodicity, and similar conditions, and how the equivalence among such conditions relates to properties of the group action and the uniformity. We complete the paper by demonstrating how various examples considered earlier all fit in our framework.

In this chapter, we will discuss barriers to purely advective transport in velocity fields that may have complex spatial features but a simple (recurrent) temporal structure: steady, periodic or quasiperiodic. Such velocity fields can be integrated for all times on bounded domains and hence their trajectories can be interrogated over infinite time intervals. While such exact recurrence is atypical in nature, mixing processes with precisely repeating stirring protocols are abundant in technological applications. Here, we survey classic results on temporally recurrentvelocity fields partly for motivation, partly for historical completeness and partly because their predictions in distinguished (recurrent) frames coincide with the predictions of Lagrangian coherent structure (LCS) methods to be discussed in the next chapter. For this reason, recurrent velocity fields are ideal benchmarks for LCS techniques because their transport barriers can be unambiguously identified. There are also a number of technological mixing processes in which the velocity field is engineered to be spatially recurrent, and hence the techniques discussed here apply directly to them.
Classical continuum mechanics focuses on the deformation field of moving continua. This deformation field is composed of the trajectories of all material elements, labeled by their initial positions. This initial-condition-based, material description is what we mean here by the Lagrangian description of a fluid motion. In contrast to typical solid-body deformations, however, fluid deformation may be orders of magnitude larger than the net displacement of the total fluid mass. The difficulty of tracking individual fluid elements has traditionally shifted the focus in fluid mechanics from individual trajectories to the instantaneous velocity field and quantities derived from it. These quantities constitutethe Eulerian description of fluids. This chapter surveys the fundamentals of both the Lagrangian and the Eulerian approaches. We also cover notions and results from differential equations and dynamical systems theory that are typically omitted from fluid mechanics textbooks, yet are heavily used in later chapters ofthis book.
Transport barriers offer a simplified global template for the redistribution ofsubstances without the need to simulate or observe numerous different initial distributions in detail. Because of their simplifying role, transport barriers are broadly invoked as explanations for observations in several physical disciplines, including geophysical flows,fluid dynamics,plasma fusion, reactive flowsand molecular dynamics. Despite their frequent conceptual use, however, transport barriers are rarely defined precisely or extracted systematically from data. The purpose of this book is to survey effective and mathematically grounded methods for defining, locating and leveraging transport barriers in numerical simulations, laboratory experiments, technological processes and nature. In the rest of this Introduction, we briefly survey the main topics that we will be covering in later chapters.
Here, we elaborate in more detail on a few technical notions that we have used throughout this book. Among other things, the subjects include the implicit function theorem, the notion of a ridge, classic Lyapunov exponents, differentiable manifolds, Hamiltonian systems, the AVISO data set, surfaces normal to a vector field, calculus of variations, Beltrami flows and the Reynolds transport theorem.
Transport barriers are observed inhibitors of the spread of substances in flows. The collection of such barriers offers a powerful geometric template that frames the main pathways, or lack thereof, in any transport process. This book surveys effective and mathematically grounded methods for defining, locating and leveraging transport barriers in numerical simulations, laboratory experiments, technological processes and nature. It provides a unified treatment of material developed over the past two decades, focusing on the methods that have a solid foundation and broad applicability to data sets beyond simple model flows. The intended audience ranges from advanced undergraduates to researchers in the areas of turbulence, geophysical flows, aerodynamics, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, flow visualization, computational mathematics and dynamical systems. Detailed open-source implementations of the numerical methods are provided in an accompanying collection of Jupyter notebooks linked from the electronic version of the book.
We give a characterization of inter-model sets with Euclidean internal space. This characterization is similar to previous results for general inter-model sets obtained independently by Baake, Lenz and Moody, and Aujogue. The new ingredients are two additional conditions. The first condition is on the rank of the abelian group generated by the set of internal differences. The second condition is on a flow on a torus defined via the address map introduced by Lagarias. This flow plays the role of the maximal equicontinuous factor in the previous characterizations.

The dimension of models derived on the basis of data is commonly restricted by the number of observations, or in the context of monitored systems, sensing nodes. This is particularly true for structural systems, which are typically high-dimensional in nature. In the scope of physics-informed machine learning, this article proposes a framework—termed neural modal ordinary differential equations (Neural Modal ODEs)—to integrate physics-based modeling with deep learning for modeling the dynamics of monitored and high-dimensional engineered systems. In this initiating exploration, we restrict ourselves to linear or mildly nonlinear systems. We propose an architecture that couples a dynamic version of variational autoencoders with physics-informed neural ODEs (Pi-Neural ODEs). An encoder, as a part of the autoencoder, learns the mappings from the first few items of observational data to the initial values of the latent variables, which drive the learning of embedded dynamics via Pi-Neural ODEs, imposing a modal model structure on that latent space. The decoder of the proposed model adopts the eigenmodes derived from an eigenanalysis applied to the linearized portion of a physics-based model: a process implicitly carrying the spatial relationship between degrees-of-freedom (DOFs). The framework is validated on a numerical example, and an experimental dataset of a scaled cable-stayed bridge, where the learned hybrid model is shown to out perform a purely physics-based approach to modeling. We further show the functionality of the proposed scheme within the context of virtual sensing, that is, the recovery of generalized response quantities in unmeasured DOFs from spatially sparse data.
