Simulations suggest that slow rotating galaxies are the result of galaxy-galaxy mergers that have a tendency to randomise stellar orbits. The exact pathway for slow rotator formation, however, is still unclear. Our aim is to see whether there is a relationship between fossil groups - whose central galaxies are thought to have undergone more major merging than other central galaxies - and the stellar kinematic properties of those central galaxies. We classify all galaxy groups in the GAMA redshift survey whose central galaxies were observed with SAMI as: i) fossil groups, ii) mass gap groups (fossil-like groups), and iii) groups that are not dynamically evolved (NDEGs, i.e. controls). We compare the following properties of centrals across the three different group types: spin (λRe), the fraction of slow rotators (fSR), and age. We also repeat our analysis on data from the EAGLE and MAGNETICUM hydrodynamical cosmological simulations. In SAMI, we find that the spin parameter, slow rotator fraction, and age are broadly consistent across our three group types, i.e. the fossil groups, mass gap groups and NDEGs. We do find a weak indication that fSR is slightly lower for fossil group centrals as compared to NDEG centrals. In contrast, in EAGLE and MAGNETICUM, fossil and mass gap group centrals typically have a significantly lower λRe than NDEG centrals. Our results for SAMI suggest that the types of mergers that form fossil groups are not the types of mergers that form slow rotators. Merger count may be less important for slow rotator formation than specific merger conditions, such as the gas content of progenitors. When and where the merging occurs are also suspected to play an important role in slow rotator formation, and these conditions may differ for fossil group formation.

A number of nearby dwarf galaxies have globular cluster (GC) candidates that require spectroscopic confirmation. Here, we present Keck telescope spectra for 15 known GCs and GC candidates that may be associated with a host dwarf galaxy and an additional 3 GCs in the halo of M31 that are candidates for accretion from a now-disrupted dwarf galaxy. We confirm six star clusters (of intermediate-to-old age) to be associated with NGC 247. The vast bulk of its GC system remains to be studied spectroscopically. We also confirm the GC candidates in F8D1 and DDO190, finding both to be young star clusters. The three M31 halo GCs all have radial velocities consistent with M31 and are old and very metal-poor. Their ages and metallicities are consistent with accretion from a low-mass satellite galaxy. Finally, three objects are found to be background galaxies – two are projected near NGC 247 and one (candidate GCC7) is near the IKN dwarf. The IKN dwarf thus has only five confirmed GCs but still a remarkable specific frequency of 124.

The baryon mass content (i.e. stellar and gas mass) of dark matter halos in the early Universe depends on both global factors – for example, ionising ultraviolet (UV) radiation background – and local factors – for example, star formation efficiency and assembly history. We use a lightweight semi-analytical model to investigate how both local and global factors impact the halo baryon mass content at redshifts of $z\geq 5$. Our model incorporates a time delay between when stars form and when they produce feedback of $0\leq t^d/\mathrm{Myr} \leq 30$, which can drive bursts of star formation, and a mass and redshift-dependent UV background, which captures the influence of cosmological reionisation on gas accretion onto halos. We use statistically representative halo assembly histories and assume that the cosmological gas accretion rate is proportional to the halo mass accretion rate. Delayed ($t^d$>0) feedback leads to oscillations in gas mass with cosmic time, behaviour that cannot be captured with instantaneous feedback ($t^d$=0). Highly efficient star formation drives stronger oscillations, while strong feedback impacts when oscillations occur; in contrast, inefficient star formation and weak feedback produce similar long-term behaviour to that observed in instantaneous feedback models. If the delayed feedback timescale is too long, a halo retains its gas reservoir but the feedback suppresses star formation. Our model predicts that lower mass systems (halo masses $m_\mathrm{h} \leq 10^7 \mathrm{M}_\odot$) at $z \leq 10$ should be strongly gas deficient ($m_\mathrm{g}\rightarrow 0$), whereas higher mass systems retain their gas reservoirs because they are sufficiently massive to continue accreting gas through cosmological reionisation. Interestingly, in higher mass halos, the median $m_\star/(m_\star+m_\mathrm{g}) \simeq 0.01-0.05$, but is a factor of 3–5 smaller when feedback is delayed. Our model does not include seed supermassive black hole feedback, which is necessary to explain massive quenched galaxies in the early Universe.

Galaxy gas kinematics are sensitive to the physical processes that contribute to a galaxy’s evolution. It is expected that external processes will cause more significant kinematic disturbances in the outer regions, while internal processes will cause more disturbances for the inner regions. Using a subsample of 47 galaxies ($0.27<z<0.36$) from the Middle Ages Galaxy Properties with Integral Field Spectroscopy (MAGPI) survey, we conduct a study into the source of kinematic disturbances by measuring the asymmetry present in the ionised gas line-of-sight velocity maps at the $0.5R_e$ (inner regions) and $1.5R_e$ (outer regions) elliptical annuli. By comparing the inner and outer kinematic asymmetries, we aim to better understand what physical processes are driving the asymmetries in galaxies. We find the local environment plays a role in kinematic disturbance, in agreement with other integral field spectroscopy studies of the local universe, with most asymmetric systems being in close proximity to a more massive neighbour. We do not find evidence suggesting that hosting an Active Galactic Nucleus contributes to asymmetry within the inner regions, with some caveats due to emission line modelling. In contrast to previous studies, we do not find evidence that processes leading to asymmetry also enhance star formation in MAGPI galaxies. Finally, we find a weak anti-correlation between stellar mass and asymmetry (i.e., high stellar mass galaxies are less asymmetric). We conclude by discussing possible sources driving the asymmetry in the ionised gas, such as disturbances being present in the colder gas phase (either molecular or atomic) prior to the gas being ionised, and non-axisymmetric features (e.g., a bar) being present in the galactic disk. Our results highlight the complex interplay between ionised gas kinematic disturbances and physical processes involved in galaxy evolution.

The amount and complexity of data delivered by modern galaxy surveys has been steadily increasing over the past years. New facilities will soon provide imaging and spectra of hundreds of millions of galaxies. Extracting coherent scientific information from these large and multi-modal data sets remains an open issue for the community and data-driven approaches such as deep learning have rapidly emerged as a potentially powerful solution to some long lasting challenges. This enthusiasm is reflected in an unprecedented exponential growth of publications using neural networks, which have gone from a handful of works in 2015 to an average of one paper per week in 2021 in the area of galaxy surveys. Half a decade after the first published work in astronomy mentioning deep learning, and shortly before new big data sets such as Euclid and LSST start becoming available, we believe it is timely to review what has been the real impact of this new technology in the field and its potential to solve key challenges raised by the size and complexity of the new datasets. The purpose of this review is thus two-fold. We first aim at summarising, in a common document, the main applications of deep learning for galaxy surveys that have emerged so far. We then extract the major achievements and lessons learned and highlight key open questions and limitations, which in our opinion, will require particular attention in the coming years. Overall, state-of-the-art deep learning methods are rapidly adopted by the astronomical community, reflecting a democratisation of these methods. This review shows that the majority of works using deep learning up to date are oriented to computer vision tasks (e.g. classification, segmentation). This is also the domain of application where deep learning has brought the most important breakthroughs so far. However, we also report that the applications are becoming more diverse and deep learning is used for estimating galaxy properties, identifying outliers or constraining the cosmological model. Most of these works remain at the exploratory level though which could partially explain the limited impact in terms of citations. Some common challenges will most likely need to be addressed before moving to the next phase of massive deployment of deep learning in the processing of future surveys; for example, uncertainty quantification, interpretability, data labelling and domain shift issues from training with simulations, which constitutes a common practice in astronomy.

We combine JWST/NIRCam imaging and MUSE data to characterize the properties of galaxies in the cluster Abell2744 (z=0.3064) and in its immediate surroundings. We discover a “red-excess” population in F200W–F444W colors in both the cluster regions and the field. These galaxies have normal F115W-F150W colors and rather blue rest frame B–V colors, but are up to 0.8 mag redder than red sequence galaxies in F200W–F444W. Considering morphology, many cluster galaxies show signatures consistent with ram pressure stripping, while field galaxies have features resembling interactions and mergers. Our hypothesis is that these galaxies are characterized by dust enshrouded star formation: a JWST/NIRSpec spectrum for one of the galaxies is dominated by a strong PAH at 3.3 μm, suggestive of dust obscured star formation.

We study the formation of the first massive galaxies and their observational properties for comparisons with JWST or ALMA data by performing cosmological radiative-hydrodynamics simulations. We find that galaxies in overdense regions have high star formation rates larger than ∼10 M⊙ yr-1 at z=10 and their stellar masses reach 109 M⊙. The star formation rates of our model galaxies at z≲12 nicely match recent JWST data. In addition, we show that the morphology of galaxies drastically changes with time via major mergers and stellar feedback.

We present a catalogue of isolated field elliptical (IfE) galaxies drawn from the W1 field of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS). 228 IfEs were identified from a flux-limited $(r<21.8)$ galaxy catalogue which corresponds to a density of 3 IfE/sq.deg. For comparison we consider a sample of elliptical galaxies living in dense environments, based on identification of the brightest cluster galaxies (BGCs) in the same survey. Using the same dataset for the comparison sample ensures a uniform selection, including in the redshift range as IfEs (i.e. $0.1<z<0.9$ ). A comparison of elliptical galaxies in different environments reveals that IfEs and BCGs have similar behaviours in their colours, star formation activities, and scaling relations of mass–size and size–luminosity. IfEs and BCGs have similar slopes in the scaling relations with respect to cluster ellipticals within the $-24 \leq M_{r} \leq -22$ magnitude and $10.2< \textrm{log}(M_{*}/ \textrm M_\odot)\leq12.0$ mass ranges. Three IfEs identified in this study can be associated with fossil groups found in the same survey area which gives clues for future studies.

We present an overview of the project “The Physics of Galaxy Assembly: IFS observations of high-z galaxies”, a Guaranteed Time Observations (GTO) programme of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). It an ambitious project aimed at investigating the internal structure of distant galaxies with the NIRSpec integral field spectrograph (IFS), having allocated 273 hours of JWST prime time. The NIRSpec capability will provide us with spatially resolved spectroscopy in the 1-5 μm range of a sample of over forty galaxies and Active Galactic Nuclei in the redshift range 3 < z 9. IFS observations of individual galaxies will enable us to investigate in detail the most important physical processes driving galaxy evolution across the cosmic epoch. More in detail, the main specific objectives are: to trace the distribution of star formation, to map the resolved properties of the stellar populations, to trace the gas kinematics (i.e. velocity fields, velocity dispersion) and, hence, determine dynamical masses and also identify non-virial motions (outflow and inflows), and to map metallicity gradients and dust attenuation.

Radial colour gradients within galaxies arise from gradients of stellar age, metallicity, and dust reddening. Large samples of colour gradients from wide-area imaging surveys can be used to constrain galaxy formation models. Here we measured colour gradients for low-redshift galaxies using photometry from the 9th DESI Legacy Imaging Survey (LS), which reaches r ∼ 24 over ∼14,000 deg2. We investigate empirical relationships between colour gradients, M*, and sSFR. We compared our results with the prediction of the Illustris TNG-100 simulation using SDSS mock images.

The rate of star formation (SFR) is one of the important quantities that helps to study galaxies’ evolutionary path. In fact, measuring the SFR during the life of the Universe shows us how galaxies have acquired their metallicity and star mass. In this regard, the galaxies of the Local Group give us a great opportunity to study the connection between different stellar populations and galaxy evolution. In this paper, we use the Long-Period variable stars to estimate the radial star formation in the disc of the M31 galaxy. These stars are powerful instruments to achieve this goal. They reach their peak luminosity and coldest state at the final point of their evolution. Also, there is a directly related between their mass and luminosity, so using stellar evolution theoretical models, we construct the mass function and hence the star formation history (SFH). In the disc of M31, we see an increase in the rate of star formation and a decrease in the age of stars in the outer parts. These results predict the inside-out growth well.

We explore the relationship between globular cluster total number, NGC, and central black hole mass, M•, in spiral galaxies. Including cosmic scatter, log M• ∝ (1.64 ± 0.24) log NGC. Whereas in ellipticals the correlation is linear [log M• ∝ (1.02 ± 0.10) log NGC], and hence could be due to statistical convergence through mergers, this mechanism cannot explain the much steeper correlation in spirals. Additionally, we derive total stellar galaxy mass, M*, from its two-slope correlation with NGC (Hudson et al. 2014). In the M• versus M* parameter space, with M* derived from NGC, M• ∝ (1.48 ± 0.18) log M* for ellipticals, and M• ∝ (1.21 ± 0.16) log M* for spirals. The observed agreement between ellipticals and spirals may imply that black holes and galaxies co-evolve through “calm” accretion, AGN feedback and other secular processes.

Feedback effects by supernovae (SNe) and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are believed to be essential for galaxy evolution and shaping present-day galaxies, but their exact mechanisms on galactic scales and their impact on CGM/IGM are not well understood yet. In galaxy formation simulations, it is still challenging to resolve sub-parsec scales, and we need to implement subgrid models to account for the physics on small scales. In this article, we summarize some of the efforts to build more physically based feedback models, discuss about pushing the resolution to its limits in galaxy simulations, testing galaxy formation codes under the AGORA code comparison project, and how to probe the impact of feedback using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations via Lyα absorption and CGM/IGM tomography technique. We also discuss our future directions of research in this field and how we make progress by comparing our simulations with observations.

The standard galaxy formation model predicts that galaxies form within a Cold Dark Matter (CDM) halo and that galaxies are dominated by dark matter. However, recent observations have discovered dark-matter-deficient galaxies with much less dark matter mass than theoretical predictions, and the process of their formation has been discussed. Here, we investigate the physical processes of galaxy formation by collisions between gas-rich dark matter subhalos within the context of the CDM paradigm. We investigate the formation process of dark-matter-deficient galaxies by running three-dimensional simulations of the collision process between dark matter subhalos (DMSHs) with the same mass of 109M⊙ colliding the velocity of 100 km s−1. We then compared the effect of different supernova feedback models, the subgrid physics of the simulation, on the collision-induced formation of galaxies. The results show that the strong feedback model ejects gas out of the system more efficiently than the weak feedback model, leading to lower star formation rates and the formation of a more extended galaxy. Finally, dark-matter-deficient galaxies with stellar masses of ∼ 107M⊙ and ∼ 108M⊙ are formed in the weak and strong feedback models, respectively.

Existence of cold-mode gas accretion along with the hot-mode accretion of the shock-heated gas can explain the bimodality in the elemental abundance of the Milky Way disk stars as well as the mass-dependence of galaxy morphology represented by mass ratios of thin disks, thick disks, and bulges.

We present here self-consistent zoom-in simulations of massive galaxies forming in a full cosmological setting. The simulations are run with an updated version of the KETJU code, which is able to resolve the gravitational dynamics of their supermassive black holes, while simultaneously modelling the large-scale astrophysical processes in the surrounding galaxies, such as gas cooling, star formation and stellar and AGN feedback. The KETJU code is able to accurately model the complex behaviour of multiple SMBHs, including dynamical friction, stellar scattering and gravitational wave emission, and also to resolve Lidov–Kozai oscillations that naturally occur in hierarchical triplet SMBH systems. In general most of the SMBH binaries form at moderately high eccentricities, with typical values in the range of , meaning that the circular binary models that are commonly used in the literature are insufficient for capturing the typical binary evolution.

One of the ways to understand the genesis and evolution of the universe is to know how galaxies have formed and evolved. In this regard, the study of star formation history (SFH) plays an important role in the accurate understanding of galaxies. In this paper, we used long-period variable stars (LPVs) for estimating the SFH in the Andromeda galaxy (M31). These cool stars reach their peak luminosity in the final stage of their evolution also their birth mass is directly related to their luminosity. Therefore, using stellar evolution models, we construct the mass function and hence the star formation history.

One of the primary foci of research in astrophysics is on developing a rigorous understanding of the first galaxies. This entails studying the physical processes such as accretion, cooling and star formation in first galaxies, and also investigating the consequences of these processes in the present day Universe. We investigate the star formation in the early galaxies and its subsequent evolution using the eagle simulation and find that the star formation has a smooth evolutionary behaviour at low redshifts leading to a main sequence of star formation that can be explained by deterministic models using accretion history as an input. In contrast, at high redshift (>6), most of the galaxies are bursty. At high redshift, instead of exhibiting a main sequence in SFR – Mh plane, they bunch-up around a halo mass of ≈ 109 Mȯ and SFR ≈0.1 Mȯ yr−1. As a consequence, the reionization of the Universe is led by low mass haloes hosting brighter galaxies that are undergoing intense bursts. Furthermore, the bursts in the infant galaxies lead to a poorly mixed interstellar medium in which the stars can form from gas enriched predominantly by a single nucleosynthetic channel. The lower mass subset of the stars formed in first galaxies resemble the carbon enhanced metal poor stars in our Galaxy while the higher mass ones reionized the Universe.

Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has enabled us to detect [Oiii] 88 μm line even at z > 9. To study the properties of high-redshift [Oiii] emitters, we calculate [Oiii] luminosities of galaxies in a cosmological simulation by applying a physical model of Hii region and using the photoionization code cloudy. We find that the [Oiii] 88 μm luminosity, LOIII,88, scales with SFR with slightly larger LOIII,88 than a local relation. Some [Oiii] emitters have extended disk-like structure. We propose to use the ratio between [Oiii] 88 μm line and [Oiii] 5007 Å line, which can be detected with James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), to estimate the gas density and the metallicity in HII region of high-redshift [Oiii] emitters.
