We investigate exact nonlinear waves on surfaces locally approximating the rotating sphere for two-dimensional inviscid incompressible flow. Our first system corresponds to a $\beta$-plane approximation at the equator, and the second to a $\gamma$ approximation, with the latter describing flow near the poles. We find exact wave solutions in the Lagrangian reference frame that cannot be written down in closed form in the Eulerian reference frame. The wave particle trajectories, contours of potential vorticity and Lagrangian mean velocity take relatively simple forms. The waves possess a non-trivial Lagrangian mean flow that depends on the amplitude of the waves and on a particle label that characterizes values of constant potential vorticity. The mean flow arises due to potential vorticity conservation on fluid particles. Solutions over the entire space are generated by assuming that the flow far from the origin is zonal and there is a region of uniform potential vorticity between this zonal flow and the waves. In the $\gamma$ approximation, a class of waves is found that, based on analogous solutions on the plane, we call Ptolemaic vortex waves. The mean flow of some of these waves, which we can describe in highly nonlinear scenarios due to the exact nature of the solutions, resembles polar jet streams. Several illustrative solutions are used as initial conditions in the fully spherical rotating Navier–Stokes equations, where integration is performed via the numerical scheme presented in Salmon & Pizzo (Atmosphere, vol. 14, issue 4, 2023, 747). The potential vorticity contours found from these numerical experiments vary between stable permanent progressive form and fully turbulent flows generated by wave breaking.

A macroscopic model for perfect-slip flow in porous media is derived in this work, starting from the pore-scale flow problem and making use of an upscaling technique based on the adjoint method and Green's formula. It is shown that the averaged momentum equation has a Darcy form in which the permeability tensor, $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{K}}_{ps}$, is obtained from an associated adjoint (closure) problem that is to be solved on a (periodic) unit cell representative of the structure. Similarly to the classical permeability tensor, $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{K}}$, in the no-slip regime, $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{K}}_{ps}$ is intrinsic to the porous medium under consideration and is shown to be symmetric and positive. Integral relationships between $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{K}}_{ps}$, the partial-slip flow permeability tensor, $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{K}}_{s}$, and $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{K}}$ are derived. Numerical simulations carried out on two-dimensional model porous structures, together with an approximate analytical solution and an empirical correlation for a particular configuration, confirm the validity of the macroscopic model and the relationship between $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{K}}_{ps}$ and $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{K}}$.

The Whitham equation is a non-local, nonlinear partial differential equation that models the temporal evolution of spatial profiles of surface displacement of water waves. However, many laboratory and field measurements record time series at fixed spatial locations. To directly model data of this type, it is desirable to have equations that model the spatial evolution of time series. The spatial Whitham (sWhitham) equation, proposed as the spatial generalization of the Whitham equation, fills this need. In this paper, we study this equation and apply it to water-wave experiments on shallow and deep water. We compute periodic travelling-wave solutions to the sWhitham equation and examine their properties, including their stability. Results for small-amplitude solutions align with known results for the Whitham equation. This suggests that the systems are consistent in the weakly nonlinear regime. At larger amplitudes, there are some discrepancies. Notably, the sWhitham equation does not appear to admit cusped solutions of maximal wave height. In the second part, we compare predictions from the temporal and spatial Korteweg–de Vries and Whitham equations with measurements from laboratory experiments. We show that the sWhitham equation accurately models measurements of tsunami-like waves of depression, waves of elevation, and solitary waves on shallow water. Its predictions also compare favourably with experimental measurements of waves of depression and elevation on deep water. Accuracy is increased by adding a phenomenological damping term. Finally, we show that neither the sWhitham nor the temporal Whitham equation accurately models the evolution of wave packets on deep water.

Linear stability analysis currently fails to predict turbulence transition in canonical viscous flows. We show that two alternative models of the boundary condition for incipient perturbations at solid walls produce linear instabilities that could be sufficient to explain turbulence transition. In many cases, the near-wall behaviour of the discovered instabilities is empirically indistinguishable from the classical no-slip condition. The ability of these alternative boundary conditions to predict linear instabilities that are consistent with turbulence transition suggests that the no-slip condition may be an overly simplified model of fluid–solid interface physics, particularly as a description of the flow perturbations that lead to turbulence transition in wall-bounded flows.

Two-dimensional turbulence transfers its energy towards the lowest mode in the domain, but domain geometry exerts a powerful control. On the sphere, with its three axes of rotational symmetry, angular momentum conservation prevents energy from entering the three lowest modes – those corresponding to the spherical harmonics $Y_1^0$ and $Y_1^{\pm 1}$ – because the amplitudes of these three modes are proportional to the three conserved components of the angular momentum vector. Non-spherical ellipsoids partly or completely break the rotational symmetry corresponding to angular momentum conservation. The flow on spheroids, which have only one axis of rotational symmetry, conserves only a single component of angular momentum. If the axis of symmetry is taken to be the $z$-axis, then only the $z$-component of angular momentum is conserved. Energy can flow into the other two lowest modes. The general triaxial ellipsoid breaks all rotational symmetries, thus angular momentum is not conserved, and energy can flow into any mode. We describe numerical experiments that confirm these predictions.

Linear unsteady aerofoil theory, while successfully used for the prediction of unsteady aerofoil lift for many decades, has yet to be proven adequate for predicting the propulsive performance of oscillating aerofoils. In this paper we test the hypothesis that the central shortcoming of linear small-amplitude models, such as the Garrick function, is the failure to account for the flow acceleration caused by aerofoil thrust. A new analytical model is developed by coupling the Garrick function to a cycle-averaged actuator disc model, in a manner analogous to the blade-element momentum theory for wind turbines and propellers. This amounts to assuming the Garrick function to be locally valid and, in combination with a global control volume analysis, enables the prediction of flow acceleration at the aerofoil. The new model is demonstrated to substantially improve the agreement with large-eddy simulations of an aerofoil in combined heave and pitch motion.

Resonant standing waves excited on the water surface in a deep narrow rectangular cavity by a fully immersed cylinder harmonically oscillating in the vertical direction are studied theoretically and experimentally. The effect of the finite wavemaker size is considered in the framework of the potential two-dimensional flow theory. Nonlinearities and weak dissipation at solid surfaces are accounted for. The spatio-temporal structure of the waves in the presence of detuning between the forcing and the natural frequency of the system is analysed. The variation of the surface shape in space and time studied in experiments supports the assumption of two-dimensional flow. The finite size of the wavemaker causes a downshift of the effective resonant frequency of the cavity; this effect is enhanced by the nonlinearity. For small amplitude waves, the surface elevation evolution in time is decomposed into the sum of the time-periodic function, corresponding to the forcing frequency, and its second harmonic; the shape of the wavenumber spectra of these components depends on the forcing frequency. For larger wave amplitudes, additional peaks in the frequency spectrum appear. The theoretical predictions are compared with the experimental results.

The evolution of the water-entry cavity affects the impact load and the motion of the body. This paper adopts the Eulerian finite element method for multiphase flow for simulations of the high-speed water-entry process. The accuracy and convergence of the numerical method are verified by comparing it with the experimental data and the results of the transient cavity dynamics theory. Based on the results, the representative characteristics of the cavity are discussed from the perspective of the cavity cross-section. It is found that the asymmetry of the cavity expansion and contraction durations is related to the motion of the free surface and the closure of the cavity. The uplift of the free surface suppresses cavity expansion, while the jet generated from free surface closure accelerates cavity contraction. The duration of the contraction of the cavity near the free surface is shorter than the expansion duration due to the change in the velocity distribution caused by the free surface motion. The necking phenomenon during deep closure leads to an increase in the internal pressure of the cavity, prolonging cavity contraction near the deep closure area. This work provides new insights into the cavity dynamics in high-speed water entry.

The force and torque on a solid body in a viscous potential flow are often taken to be independent of viscosity. Joseph et al. (Eur. J. Mech. B/Fluids, vol. 12, 1993, pp. 97–106; J. Fluid Mech., vol. 265, 1994, pp. 1–23) proved that this holds for (i) the force (not the torque) in any two-dimensional flow, and (ii) the drag force experienced by a purely translating three-dimensional body. The remaining components of the force and torque, along with general three-dimensional flows, were not considered. Importantly, the flow was assumed to be unbounded and irrotational everywhere. We eliminate this rarely satisfied assumption and consider the viscous force and torque experienced by any closed surface where the flow is irrotational locally; this can include a body's surface. Any vorticity distribution is permitted away from the closed irrotational surface. In so doing, we complete the analysis of Joseph et al. for all components of the viscous force and torque in two and three dimensions and enable application to real flows that inevitably contain regions of vorticity.

Steady streaming is a peculiar flow, induced by the oscillation of an object with respect to the fluid in which it is embedded. While the oscillation amplitude may be extremely small, the nonlinearity due to fluid inertia gives rise to this steady flow. Large and powerful vortices develop around the object. Usually, the streaming is scrutinised in the case of homogeneous objects. Here, Cui et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 979, 2024, A7) derive the streaming around a soft elastic sphere containing a solid core. This elaborate derivation opens a new description of streaming in biological soft environments and robotics.

The response of airfoils to unsteady disturbances is a classic problem in the aerodynamics field. Many theoretical models have been proposed in the past to predict the unsteady aerodynamic forces of airfoils. However, these theories focused on individual airfoil motions or incoming flow disturbances, while the theoretical models for multiple disturbances still need to be developed. In this study, a theoretical model to predict the aerodynamic force of an oscillating airfoil encountering vertical gust is derived from a linear combination of Theodorsen's and Sears’ theories. Experimental investigations involving a two-dimensional pitching airfoil encountering a sinusoidal vertical gust are carried out to examine the proposed theory. It is found that the theory effectively captures the trends in the unsteady lift of airfoils subjected to dual disturbances. However, it tends to overestimate the lift amplitude. Notably, when a quasi-steady correction is applied to the theory, the prediction accuracy is greatly improved. The theory correction agrees well with experiment at small pitching frequencies, while deviations exist at higher pitching frequencies. The temporal evolution of the flow velocity reveals that the velocity disturbance induced by the coupled disturbance around the airfoil conforms to the linear superposition of the velocities induced by each individual disturbance, consistent with the prediction of the vortex sheet model. As the pitching frequency increases, significant nonlinear effects appear near the trailing edge of the airfoil, which may be one key factor for the disparities between the theoretical predictions and the experimental lift at higher pitching frequencies.

Equations relating the pressure at a horizontal seabed, the free-surface profile and the surface pressure are derived for two-dimensional irrotational steady water waves with arbitrary pressure at the free surface. Special cases include gravity, capillary, flexural and wind waves. Without approximations, we show that the free-surface recovery from the bottom pressure requires the resolution of only one first-order ordinary differential equation independent of the surface pressure, thus providing a new general recovery method valid for a broad class of water waves. Another equation provides an explicit expression for the surface pressure as a function of the bottom pressure and of the free surface. Thus, if unknown, the surface pressure can also be recovered if one extra measurement is available. This new recovery procedure is illustrated analytically for the linear approximation of a flexural–capillary–gravity wave, and numerically for fully nonlinear capillary–gravity waves.

In this work, we analyse wall-bounded flows in the continuum to transition regime with the help of higher-order transport equations (super-set of the Navier–Stokes equation). Towards this, we incorporate second-order in Knudsen number accurate terms in the single-particle distribution function, and with this complete representation, we first derive the second-order accurate extended-OBurnett (EOBurnett) and third-order accurate super-OBurnett (SOBurnett) equations. We then demonstrate that these newly derived equations exhibit unconditional linear stability. We finally validate the equations by solving for plane Poiseuille flow and derive closed-form analytical solutions for the pressure and velocity fields. The pressure and velocity results thus obtained have been compared with direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) data in the transition regime. The results from both the EOBurnett and SOBurnett equations are found to yield better agreement with DSMC data than that obtained from the Navier–Stokes equations. This improved agreement is attributed to the presence of additional terms in the proposed equations, which effectively capture the effect of the Knudsen layer near the wall. The obtained higher-order transport equations and the closed-form solution presented in this work are novel. The ability of the equations to describe the flow in the transition regime should form the basis for conducting further realistic analytical studies of wall-bounded flows in the future.

The axisymmetric problem of a conical shell impact onto an inviscid and incompressible liquid of infinite depth is studied. The shell is thin, and its deadrise angle is small. The problem is inertia dominated. Gravity, surface tension and viscous effects are not taken into account. The hydrodynamic loads acting on the shell and the shell displacements are determined at the same time. The model by Scolan (J. Sound Vib., vol. 277, issue 1–2, 2004, pp. 163–203) is used to find the flow and hydrodynamic pressure caused by the shell impact. This model is based on the Wagner theory of water impact, which was generalised to axisymmetric problems of hydroelastic slamming. Dry and wet modes of the conical shell, as well as the corresponding frequencies, are calculated. It is shown that a conical shell can be approximated by a circular plate only for a very small deadrise angle. Deflections and strains in the conical shell during the impact stage, when the wetted part of the shell increases at high rate, as well as the hydrodynamic loads, are determined and analysed.

We show that a heating pattern applied to a surface with a corrugation pattern generates a propulsive effect. The same heating pattern applied to a smooth surface creates propulsion through nonlinear thermal streaming associated with pitchfork bifurcation. The combination of groove and heating patterns generates thermal drift, representing a forced response whose magnitude changes with the relative position of both patterns. Thermal drift is always present, while thermal streaming requires sufficiently intense heating. When both effects are active, a change in the relative position of these patterns produces rapid changes in the magnitude of propulsion, resulting in the formation of limit points. The strength of propulsion increases with a decrease in the Prandtl number and with an addition of uniform heating.

This study introduces an analytical solution for the laminar entrance flow in circular pipes, aiming to confirm the occurrence of velocity overshoot. Velocity overshoot is characterised by the maximum axial velocity appearing near the pipe wall instead of the central axis. Similar to the previous studies, the analytical solution is derived from the parabolised Navier–Stokes equation; however, the specific approach used in linearising the momentum equation has not been attempted before. The accuracy of this analytical solution has been verified through a comprehensive comparison with various published experimental data. The existence of velocity overshoot at a short distance from the inlet, which is evident in numerous numerical calculations based on the full Navier–Stokes equations and corroborated by recent magnetic resonance (MR) velocimetry experiments, is identified analytically for the first time. The parabolised Navier–Stokes equation has inherent self-similarity with respect to the Reynolds number, implying that $Re$ is incorporated into the dimensionless variables rather than serving as an independent flow parameter. According to both MR velocimetry measurements and the present analytical solution, the self-similarity is not valid immediately following the pipe inlet, and this becomes more evident as $Re$ decreases; hence, the analytical solution derived from the parabolised Navier–Stokes equation cannot accurately predict the evolution of the velocity profile within this region near the pipe inlet.

Viscous streaming is an efficient rectification mechanism to exploit flow inertia at small scales for fluid and particle manipulation. It typically entails a fluid vibrating around an immersed solid feature that, by concentrating stresses, modulates the emergence of steady flows of useful topology. Motivated by its relevance in biological and artificial settings characterized by soft materials, recent studies have theoretically elucidated, in two dimensions, the impact of body elasticity on streaming flows. Here, we generalize those findings to three dimensions, via the minimal case of an immersed soft sphere. We first improve existing solutions for the rigid-sphere limit, by considering previously unaccounted terms. We then enable body compliance, exposing a three-dimensional, elastic streaming process available even in Stokes flows. Such effect, consistent with two-dimensional analyses but analytically distinct, is validated against direct numerical simulations and shown to translate to bodies of complex geometry and topology, paving the way for advanced forms of flow control.

The derivation of the Navier–Stokes equation in continuum mechanics leads to a number of consequences which are discussed in depth. In spite of its very high representativity of real flows, this equation presents some artefacts due to the whole notion of the continuous medium. An alternative to the Navier–Stokes equation is proposed, based on the conservation of energy per unit mass instead of momentum. The classical inertial frame of reference is replaced by a set of local frames of reference where interactions are treated as cause and effect. Invoking the principle of equivalence between energy and mass, the latter is eliminated from the quantities used in this new formalism. All quantities, variables and physical properties are thus expressed in units of mass. The law of motion is established in the form of the conservation of acceleration, an energy per unit of mass and length. The acceleration is thus written in the form of a Helmholtz–Hodge decomposition, in two terms, the first curl-free and the second divergence-free as a function of two potentials, scalar and vector. Maxwell's idea of federating the laws of electrodynamics and magnetism to establish electromagnetism is taken up here to establish the new law of motion as a nonlinear wave equation. This approach makes it possible to demonstrate that this law is relativistic from the start. The form of the equation of motion in two Lagrangians gives access to symmetries related to the conservation of certain quantities according to Noether's theorem.

Turbine–wake and farm–atmosphere interactions influence wind farm power production. For large offshore farms, the farm–atmosphere interaction is usually the more significant effect. This study proposes an analytical model of the ‘momentum availability factor’ to predict the impact of farm–atmosphere interactions. It models the effects of net advection, pressure gradient forcing and turbulent entrainment, using steady quasi-one-dimensional flow assumptions. Turbulent entrainment is modelled by assuming self-similar vertical shear stress profiles. We used the model with the ‘two-scale momentum theory’ to predict the power of large finite-sized farms. The model compared well with existing results of large-eddy simulations of finite wind farms in conventionally neutral boundary layers. The model captured most of the effects of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) height on farm performance by considering the undisturbed vertical shear stress profile of the ABL as an input. In particular, the model predicted the power of staggered wind farms with a typical error of 5 % or less. The developed model provides a novel way of predicting instantly the power of large wind farms, including the farm blockage effects. A further simplification of the model to predict analytically the ‘wind extractability factor’ is also presented. This study provides a novel framework for modelling farm–atmosphere interactions. Future studies can use the framework to better model large wind farms.

Two-dimensional compressible flows in radial equilibrium are investigated in the ideal dilute-gas regime and the non-ideal single-phase regime close to the liquid–vapour saturation curve and the critical point. Radial equilibrium flows along constant-curvature streamlines are considered. All properties are therefore independent of the tangential streamwise coordinate. A differential relation for the Mach number dependency on the radius is derived for both ideal and non-ideal conditions. For ideal flows, the differential relation is integrated analytically. Assuming a constant specific heat ratio $\gamma$, the Mach number is a monotonically decreasing function of the radius of curvature for ideal flows, with $\gamma$ being the only fluid-dependent parameter. In non-ideal conditions, the Mach number profile also depends on the total thermodynamic conditions of the fluid. For high molecular complexity fluids, such as toluene or hexamethyldisiloxane, a non-monotone Mach number profile is admissible in single-phase supersonic conditions. For Bethe–Zel'dovich–Thompson fluids, non-monotone behaviour is observed in subsonic conditions. Numerical simulations of subsonic and supersonic turning flows are carried out using the streamline curvature method and the computational fluid dynamics software SU2, respectively, both confirming the flow evolution from uniform flow conditions to the radial equilibrium profile predicted by the theory.
