In 2011, Guillera [‘A new Ramanujan-like series for $1/\pi ^2$’, Ramanujan J. 26 (2011), 369–374] introduced a remarkable rational ${}_{7}F_{6}( \frac {27}{64} )$-series for ${1}/{\pi ^2}$ using the Wilf–Zeilberger (WZ) method, and Chu and Zhang later proved this evaluation using an acceleration method based on Dougall’s ${}_{5}F_{4}$-sum. Another proof of Guillera’s ${}_{7}F_{6}( \frac {27}{64} )$-series was given by Guillera in 2018, and this subsequent proof used a recursive argument involving Dougall’s sum together with the WZ method. Subsequently, Chen and Chu introduced a q-analogue of Guillera’s ${}_{7}F_{6}( \frac {27}{64} )$-series. The many past research articles concerning Guillera’s ${}_{7}F_{6}( \frac {27}{64} )$-series for ${1}/{\pi ^2}$ naturally lead to questions about similar results for other mathematical constants. We apply a WZ-based acceleration method to prove new rational ${}_{7}F_{6}( \frac {27}{64} )$- and ${}_{6}F_{5}( \frac {27}{64} )$-series for $\sqrt {2}$.

Open conjectures state that, for every $x\in [0,1]$, the orbit $(x_n)_{n=1}^\infty $ of the mean-median recursion

with initial data $(x_1,x_2,x_3)=(0,x,1)$, is eventually constant, and that its transit time and limit functions (of x) are unbounded and continuous, respectively. In this paper, we prove that for the slightly modified recursion

first suggested by Akiyama, the transit time function is unbounded but the limit function is discontinuous.

Vertically vibrating a liquid bath may allow a self-propelled wave-particle entity to move on its free surface. The horizontal dynamics of this walking droplet, under the constraint of an external drag force, can be described adequately by an integro-differential trajectory equation. For a sinusoidal wave field, this equation is equivalent to a closed three-dimensional system of nonlinear ODEs. We explicitly define a stability boundary for the system and a quantised criterion for its partial integrability in the meromorphic category.

Let $M=(\begin {smallmatrix}\rho ^{-1} & 0 \\0 & \rho ^{-1} \\\end {smallmatrix})$ be an expanding real matrix with $0<\rho <1$, and let ${\mathcal D}_n=\{(\begin {smallmatrix} 0\\ 0 \end {smallmatrix}),(\begin {smallmatrix} \sigma _n\\ 0 \end {smallmatrix}),(\begin {smallmatrix} 0\\ \gamma _n \end {smallmatrix})\}$ be digit sets with $\sigma _n,\gamma _n\in \{-1,1\}$ for each $n\ge 1$. Then the infinite convolution

is called a Moran–Sierpinski measure. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $L^2(\,\mu _{M,\{{\mathcal D}_n\}})$ to admit an infinite orthogonal set of exponential functions. Furthermore, we give the exact cardinality of orthogonal exponential functions in $L^2(\,\mu _{M,\{{\mathcal D}_n\}})$ when $L^2(\,\mu _{M,\{{\mathcal D}_n\}})$ does not admit any infinite orthogonal set of exponential functions based on whether $\rho $ is a trinomial number or not.

We characterise the existence of certain (weakly) compact multipliers of the second dual of symmetric abstract Segal algebras in both the group algebra $L^{1}(G)$ and the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ of a locally compact group G.

Given a Fell bundle $\mathscr C\overset {q}{\to }\Xi $ over the discrete groupoid $\Xi $, we study the symmetry of the associated Hahn algebra $\ell ^{\infty ,1}(\Xi \!\mid \!\mathscr C)$ in terms of the isotropy subgroups of $\Xi $. We prove that $\Xi $ is symmetric (respectively hypersymmetric) if and only if all of the isotropy subgroups are symmetric (respectively hypersymmetric). We also characterise hypersymmetry using Fell bundles with constant fibres, showing that for discrete groupoids, ‘hypersymmetry’ equals ‘rigid symmetry’.

We show that there is no nontrivial idempotent in the reduced group $\ell ^p$-operator algebra $B^p_r(F_n)$ of the free group $F_n$ on n generators for each positive integer n.

We present a systematic approach to the problem whether a topologically infinite-dimensional space can be made homogeneous in the Coifman–Weiss sense. The answer to the question is negative, as expected. Our leading representative of spaces with this property is $\mathbb {T}^\omega = \mathbb {T} \times \mathbb {T} \times \cdots $ with the natural product topology.

We prove Reilly-type upper bounds for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Steklov problem associated with the p-Laplace operator on submanifolds of manifolds with sectional curvature bounded from above by a nonnegative constant.

For amenable discrete groupoids $\mathcal {G}$ and row-finite directed graphs E, let $(\mathcal {G},E)$ be a self-similar groupoid and let $C^*(\mathcal {G}, E)$ be the associated $C^*$-algebra. We introduce a weaker faithfulness condition than those in the existing literature that still guarantees that $C^*(\mathcal {G})$ embeds in $C^*(\mathcal {G}, E)$. Under this faithfulness condition, we prove a gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem.

Celebrating 100 years of the Banach contraction principle, we prove some fixed point theorems having all ingredients of the principle, but dealing with common fixed points of a contractive semigroup of nonlinear mappings acting in a modulated topological vector space. This research follows the ideas of the author’s recent papers [‘On modulated topological vector spaces and applications’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 101 (2020), 325–332, and ‘Normal structure in modulated topological vector spaces’, Comment. Math. 60 (2020), 1–11]. Modulated topological vector spaces generalise, among others, Banach spaces and modular function spaces. The interest in modulars reflects the fact that the notions of ‘norm like’ but ‘noneuclidean’ (and not even necessarily convex) constructs to measure a level of proximity between complex objects are frequently used in science and technology. To prove our fixed point results in this setting, we introduce a new concept of Opial sets using analogies with the norm-weak and modular versions of the Opial property. As an example, the results of this work can be applied to spaces like $L^p$ for $p> 0 $, variable Lebesgue spaces $L^{p(\cdot )}$ where $1 \leq p(t) < + \infty $, Orlicz and Musielak–Orlicz spaces.

We provide a geometric interpretation of the well-known A3w condition for regularity in optimal transport.

Erdős proved that every real number is the sum of two Liouville numbers. A set W of complex numbers is said to have the Erdős property if every real number is the sum of two members of W. Mahler divided the set of all transcendental numbers into three disjoint classes S, T and U such that, in particular, any two complex numbers which are algebraically dependent lie in the same class. The set of Liouville numbers is a proper subset of the set U and has Lebesgue measure zero. It is proved here, using a theorem of Weil on locally compact groups, that if $m\in [0,\infty )$, then there exist $2^{\mathfrak {c}}$ dense subsets W of S each of Lebesgue measure m such that W has the Erdős property and no two of these W are homeomorphic. It is also proved that there are $2^{\mathfrak {c}}$ dense subsets W of S each of full Lebesgue measure, which have the Erdős property. Finally, it is proved that there are $2^{\mathfrak {c}}$ dense subsets W of S such that every complex number is the sum of two members of W and such that no two of these W are homeomorphic.

Suppose M is a complex projective manifold of dimension $\geq 2$, V is the support of an ample divisor in M and U is an open set in M that intersects each irreducible component of V. We show that a pluriharmonic map $f:M\to N$ into a Kähler manifold N is holomorphic whenever $f\vert _{V\,\cap \, U}$ is holomorphic.
