The polyelectrolyte layer coating mammalian cells, known as the glycocalyx, is important in communicating flow information to the cell. In this paper, the layer is modelled as a semi-infinite, doubly periodic array of parallel charged cylinders. The electric potential and ion distributions surrounding such an array are found using the Poisson–Boltzmann equation and an iterative domain decomposition technique. Similar methods are used to calculate Stokes flows, driven either by a shear at infinity or by an electric field, parallel or transverse to the cylinders. The resulting electric streaming currents due to flow over endothelial cells, and the electrophoretic mobilities of red blood cells are deduced as functions of polymer concentration and electrolyte molarity. It is shown that only the top portion of the layer is important in these effects.

A circular cylinder is positioned horizontally in an incompressible stably stratified fluid which has a constant Brunt-Väisälä frequency. A vertical two-dimensional internal wave is produced when the cylinder is oscillated at this natural frequency. A small amplitude viscous similarity solution which explains the main features of the internal wave is presented.

In this paper we consider the possibility of generating homogeneous flows with a nearly constant strain rate. This is achieved by stretching an almost cylindrical liquid bridge under microgravity. One key issue is the adjustability of the disk diameters, necessary for maintaining ideal boundary conditions. We first study the stretching of two different fluids by both numerical and experimental means. The numerical results are compared with the experimental data and very good agreement is found. The numerical method is then used to study the behaviour of liquid bridges for quite a large range of the flow parameters (capillary number $\Ca$ and Weber number $\We$) in order to detect those regimes with most suitable flow conditions.

We report on a combined experimental and numerical study of convective heat transfer along ratchet surfaces in vertical natural convection (VC). Due to the asymmetry of the convection system caused by the asymmetric ratchet-like wall roughness, two distinct states exist, with markedly different orientations of the large-scale circulation roll (LSCR) and different heat transport efficiencies. Statistical analysis shows that the heat transport efficiency depends on the strength of the LSCR. When a large-scale wind flows along the ratchets in the direction of their smaller slopes, the convection roll is stronger and the heat transport is larger than the case in which the large-scale wind is directed towards the steeper slope side of the ratchets. Further analysis of the time-averaged temperature profiles indicates that the stronger LSCR in the former case triggers the formation of a secondary vortex inside the roughness cavity, which promotes fluid mixing and results in a higher heat transport efficiency. Remarkably, this result differs from classical Rayleigh–Bénard convection (RBC) with asymmetric ratchets (Jiang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 120, 2018, 044501), wherein the heat transfer is stronger when the large-scale wind faces the steeper side of the ratchets. We reveal that the reason for the reversed trend for VC as compared to RBC is that the flow is less turbulent in VC at the same $Ra$. Thus, in VC the heat transport is driven primarily by the coherent LSCR, while in RBC the ejected thermal plumes aided by gravity are the essential carrier of heat. The present work provides opportunities for control of heat transport in engineering and geophysical flows.

The present study is aimed at assessing the existing results concerning the stability of canonical shear flows in channels and tubes with deformable walls, in light of consistent formulations of the nonlinear solid constitutive model and linearised interface conditions at the fluid–solid interface. We show that a class of unstable shear-wave modes at low Reynolds number, predicted by previous studies for pressure-driven flows through neo-Hookean tubes and channels, is absent upon use of consistent interfacial conditions. Furthermore, we analyse the consequences of the change in solid model on the stability of the canonical shear flows by using both neo-Hookean and Mooney–Rivlin models. We show that the salient features of the stability of the system are adequately captured by a consistent formulation of the neo-Hookean solid model, thus precluding the need to employ more detailed solid models. The stability analysis of planar flows past a neo-Hookean solid subjected to three-dimensional disturbances showed that two-dimensional disturbances are more unstable than the corresponding three-dimensional disturbances within the consistent formulations. We show that prior inconsistent formulations of the solid constitutive equation predict a physically spurious spanwise instability in disagreement with experiments thereby demonstrating their inapplicability to predict instabilities in flow past deformable solid surfaces. Using the consistent formulation, the present work provides an accurate picture, over a range of Reynolds numbers, of the stability of canonical shear flows through deformable channels and tubes. Importantly, it is shown how inconsistencies in either the bulk constitutive relation or in the linearisation of the interface conditions can separately lead to physically spurious instabilities. The predictions of this work are relevant to experimental studies in flow through deformable tubes and channels in the low and moderate Reynolds number regime.

A new lubrication model solution is found for the late-stage draining of a wetting capillary liquid from a linear interior corner. The solution exploits the symmetry of volumetric sink conditions at opposing ends of such a ‘double-drained’ interior corner flow with applications ranging from liquid recovery in microfluidic devices on Earth to liquid fuel scavenging in large fuel tanks aboard spacecraft. At long times $t$, the nominal liquid depth is $h\sim t^{-1}$, the liquid volume is $V\sim t^{-2}$ and the maximum volumetric liquid removal rate is $Q\sim t^{-3}$. The constraints under which the solution is valid are provided. To qualitatively assess the value of the solution, representative experiments are conducted at larger length scales aboard the International Space Station and at microfluidic length scales in a terrestrial laboratory. Both sets of experiments confirm the predicted power-law dependences. We show that the separation of variables solution offers a method to predict maximum drain rates from related geometries where a single drain location provides the required symmetry of the problem.

An X-ray attenuation technique is used to obtain the local concentration of spherical particles in a polydisperse suspension as a function of vertical position and time. From these experimental data, the average velocity of sedimentation in the homogeneous part of the suspension is derived by considering the variation with time of the total volume of particles located above a given fixed horizontal plane. Measurements have been performed in suspensions of particles which differ from each other in size with a total volume concentration in particles between 0.13% and 2.5%, and also in suspensions of particles which differ from each other both in size and in density, the total volume concentration being 2%. For the first kind of suspension, the experimental hindered settling factor is plotted versus the concentration and a linear regression analysis provides the slope with its 90% confidence limits: Se = −5.3 ± 1.1. This experimental average coefficient of sedimentation is in good agreement with the theoretical average coefficient St = −5.60 obtained from the results of Batchelor & Wen (1982). The second kind of suspension, for which permanent doublets of spheres may theoretically exist, is not in the range of validity of Batchelor & Wen's results. The experimental average coefficient of sedimentation for this case is found to be much larger than the prediction obtained by extrapolating Batchelor & Wen's results out of their range of validity. This increased velocity may be experimental evidence of the existence of permanent doublets.

Strong forcing was used to produce vortex pairing in a submerged axisymmetric water jet. Phase-averaged hot-wire measurements were combined with phase-averaged flow visualization to identify the relevant nonlinear interactions. The leading resonant interaction was not a subharmonic resonance. Instead it was a triad resonance involving the subharmonic, the fundamental and the 3/2 harmonic. The profound influence of higher harmonics on the amplification of the fundamental and subharmonic was demonstrated in a systematic way by successive truncation of the Fourier series representation of the excitation waveform.

The dimensionless dissipation coefficient $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}=\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}L/U^{3}$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}$ is the dissipation rate, $U$ the root-mean-square velocity and $L$ the integral length scale, is an important characteristic of statistically stationary homogeneous turbulence. In studies of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$, the external force is typically isotropic and large scale, and its helicity $H_{f}$ either zero or not measured. Here, we study the dependence of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$ on $H_{f}$ and find that it decreases $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$ by up to 10 % for both isotropic forces and shear flows. The numerical finding is supported by static and dynamical upper bound theory. Both show a relative reduction similar to the numerical results. That is, the qualitative and quantitative dependence of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$ on the helicity of the force is well captured by upper bound theory. Consequences for the value of the Kolmogorov constant and theoretical aspects of turbulence control and modelling are discussed in connection with the properties of the external force. In particular, the eddy viscosity in large-eddy simulations of homogeneous turbulence should be decreased by at least 10 % in the case of strongly helical forcing.

The methods of formal matched asymptotics are used to investigate the motion of a vortex in shallow inviscid fluid of varying depth and zero Froude number in the limit as the vortex core radius tends to zero. To leading order the vortex is driven by local gradients in the logarithm of the depth along an isobath (or depth contour). A further term in the vortex velocity is calculated in which effects arising from the global bottom topography, other vortices and the vortex core structure appear. The evolution of the vortex core structure is then calculated. A point-vortex model is formulated which describes the motion of a number of small vortices in terms of the bottom topography, the inviscid flows around the vortices and their evolving core structure. A numerical method for solving this model is discussed and finally some numerical simulations of the motion of vortex pairs over a varying bottom topography are presented.

We consider the Rayleigh–Taylor instability problem of two initially stationary immiscible viscous fluids positioned with the denser above the less dense in a finite circular cylinder, such that their starting fluid–fluid interface is the horizontal midplane of the cylinder. The ensuing linear instability problem has a five-dimensional parameter space – defined by the density ratio, the viscosity ratio, the cylinder aspect ratio, the surface tension between the fluids and the ratio of viscous to gravitational time scales – of which we explore only part, motivated by recent experiments where viscous fluids exchange in vertical tubes (Beckett et al., J. Fluid Mech., 2011, vol. 682, pp. 652–670). We find that for these experiments, the instability is invariably ‘side-by-side’ (of azimuthal wavenumber 1 type) but we also uncover parameter regions where the preferred instability is axisymmetric. The fact that both ‘core-annular’ (axisymmetric) and ‘side-by-side’ (asymmetric) long-time flows are seen experimentally highlights the fact that the initial Rayleigh–Taylor instability of the interface does not determine the long-time flow configuration in these situations. Finally, long-time flow solutions are presented on the basis that they will be slowly varying fingering solutions.

Linear perturbation analyses of zero-pressure-gradient boundary layers at subcritical Reynolds numbers predict that transient disturbance amplification can take place due to the lift-up mechanism. Upstream, streamwise-elongated vortices yield the largest response per unit of inflow disturbance energy, which takes the form of streamwise-elongated streaks. In this work, we compute the linear and also nonlinear inflow disturbances that generate the largest response inside the boundary layer, for flow over a thin flat plate with a slender leading edge. In order to compare our results with earlier linear analyses, we constrain the inlet disturbance to be monochromatic in time, or a single frequency. The boundary layer effectively filters high frequencies, and only low-frequency perturbations induce a strong response downstream. The low-frequency optimal inflow disturbance has a spanwise wavenumber that scales with $\sqrt{Re}$, and it consists of streamwise and normal vorticity components: the latter is tilted around the leading edge into the streamwise direction and, further downstream, generates streaks. While none of the computed monochromatic disturbances alone can lead to breakdown to turbulence, secondary instability analyses demonstrate that the streaky base state is unstable. Nonlinear simulations where the inflow disturbance is supplemented with additional white noise undergo secondary instability and breakdown to turbulence.

A description is given of the high Reynolds number (R [Gt ] 1) laminar fluid motion in the neighbourhood of the trailing edge of a flat plate undergoing small amplitude sinusoidal oscillations in a uniform supersonic stream. It is shown that for oscillations of frequency ω* = O(R¼) and amplitude h* = O(R−½) a rational description of the flow at the trailing edge is based on a ‘triple-deck’ structure, which is a familiar feature of steady trailing-edge flows. The theory may be extended in a straightforward manner to include slow oscillations of the plate, and it is shown in general that the occurrence of separation at the trailing edge is dependent upon the magnitude of the product of the frequency and amplitude of oscillation, and that if ω* [les ] O(R½) then the flow is maintained right up to the trailing edge provided that h*ω* [Lt ] R−¼. The precise condition for the occurrence of separation is found for frequencies in the range ω* R−¼.

We study the spreading of a film from ethanol–water droplets of radii $0.9~\text{mm}<r_{d}<1.1~\text{mm}$ on the surface of a deep water layer for various concentrations of ethanol in the drop. Since the drop is lighter ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D709}=\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{l}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{d}>1.03$), it stays at the surface of the water layer during the spreading of the film from the drop; the film is more viscous than the underlying water layer since $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}=\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{l}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{d}>0.38$. Inertial forces are not dominant in the spreading since the Reynolds numbers based on the film thickness $h_{f}$ are in the range $0.02<Re_{f}<1.4$. The spreading is surface-tension-driven since the film capillary numbers are in the range $0.0005<Ca_{f}<0.0069$ and the drop Bond numbers are in the range $0.19<Bo_{d}<0.56$. We observe that, when the drop is brought in contact with the water surface, capillary waves propagate from the point of contact, followed by a radially expanding, thin circular film of ethanol–water mixture. The film develops instabilities at some radius to form outward-moving fingers at its periphery while it is still expanding, till the expansion stops at a larger radius. The film then retracts, during which time the remaining major part of the drop, which stays at the centre of the expanding film, thins and develops holes and eventually mixes completely with water. The radius of the expanding front of the film scales as $r_{f}\sim t^{1/4}$ and shows a dependence on the concentration of ethanol in the drop as well as on $r_{d}$, and is independent of the layer height $h_{l}$. Using a balance of surface tension and viscous forces within the film, along with a model for the fraction of the drop that forms the thin film, we obtain an expression for the dimensionless film radius $r_{f}^{\ast }=r_{f}/r_{d}$, in the form $fr_{f}^{\ast }={t_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}d}^{\ast }}^{1/4}$, where $t_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}d}^{\ast }=t/t_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}d}$, with the time scale $t_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}d}=\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{d}r_{d}/\unicode[STIX]{x0394}\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$ and $f$ is a function of $Bo_{d}$. Similarly, we show that the dimensionless velocity of film spreading, $Ca_{d}=u_{f}\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{d}/\unicode[STIX]{x0394}\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$, scales as $4f^{4}Ca_{d}={r_{f}^{\ast }}^{-3}$.

A few decades ago, the significance of Moffatt vortices was demonstrated by establishing their existence in various flows. Wedge and cusp regions and their axisymmetric counterparts were preferred to conical regions because the associated analyses were simpler. The lowest even and odd modes were always dominant and the streamline patterns of higher modes were assumed to be similarly simple, especially as their minute strength caused computational difficulties. Here, armed with far more computer power, we return to the vortices' canonical structure, with our principal focus on the region exterior to two cones with common axis and vertex. Many interesting features are revealed, the most unexpected being the structure of the third (second odd in a symmetric geometry) mode. The two-cone geometry allows consideration of asymmetric regions, for the first time. Comparisons are made with the well-known wedge and single-cone results and numerical corrections made to the latter. In all cases, eigenvalue plots play a valuable role in guiding the discussion.

We study the viscous compressible flow through micro-channels of non-uniform cross-section. A lubrication approximation is applied to analyse the flow through shallow configurations whose gap width is small in comparison with the other characteristic dimensions. Focusing on channels with a symmetric constriction (or cavity) we obtain the solution to the problem by means of a Schwarz–Christoffel transformation. This analytic solution is verified by examining the convergence of numerical simulations with diminishing Reynolds number and gap width. Explicit closed-form expressions for the pressure-head and mass-flow-rate losses in terms of the geometrical parameters characterizing the constriction are presented and discussed in the context of experimental data existing in the literature.
