The context for this paper is Feferman's theory of explicit mathematics, T0. We address a problem that was posed in [6]. Let MID be the principle stating that any monotone operation on classifications has a least fixed point. The main objective of this paper is to show that T0 + MID, when based on classical logic, also proves the existence of non-monotone inductive definitions that arise from arbitrary extensional operations on classifications. From the latter we deduce that MID, when adjoined to classical T0, leads to a much stronger theory than T0.

In this paper first order theories for nonmonotone inductive definitions are introduced, and a proof-theoretic analysis for such theories based on combined operator forms à la Richter with recursively inaccessible and Mahlo closure ordinals is given.

The most common way of proving decidability in propositional modal logic is to shew that the system in question has the finite model property. This is not however the only way. Gabbay in [4] proves the decidability of many modal systems using Rabin's result in [8] on the decidability of the second-order theory of successor functions. In particular [4, pp. 258-265] he is able to prove the decidability of a system which lacks the finite model property. Gabbay's system is however complete, in the sense of being characterized by a class of frames, and the question arises whether there is a decidable modal logic which is not complete. Since no incomplete modal logic has the finite model property [9, p. 33], any proof of decidability must employ some such method as Gabbay's. In this paper I use the Gabbay/Rabin technique to prove the decidability of a finitely axiomatized normal modal propositional logic which is not characterized by any class of frames. The terminology I am using is standard in modal logic. By a frame is understood a pair 〈W, R〉 in which W is a class (of “possible worlds”) and R ⊆ W2. To avoid confusion in what follows, a frame will henceforth be referred to as a Kripke frame. By contrast, a general frame is a pair 〈, Π〉 in which is a Kripke frame and Π is a collection of subsets of W closed under the Boolean operations and satisfying the condition that if A is in Π then so is R−1 “A. A model on a frame (of either kind) is obtained by adding a function V which assigns sets of worlds to propositional variables. In the case of a general frame we require that V(p) ∈ Π.

The usual formulations of combinatory logic, as in Church [1] or Curry and Feys [2], have no straightforward semantics. This lack complicates the proofs of basic metasystematic results, prevents the perspicuous formalization of combinatory logic as a deductive theory, and makes the combinators unnecessarily difficult to apply to recursion theory or to the foundations of mathematics. In the present paper we shall give a new formulation of combinatory logic, thought of as an abstract theory of rules. At each stage in the development we shall give a precise semantic interpretation for our axioms. We begin with an abstract treatment of the syntax and semantics of a theory of rules. We then specialize to the theory of the combinators and prove a completeness theorem connecting our axioms with our semantics. On this basis we treat functional abstraction, truth-functions, and the representation of partial recursive functions. In the spirit of Church [1, pp. 62–71], we conclude by extending our methods to the treatment of intensional identity.

The theories developed here are part of a simplification of the theory of constructions described in [3]. Their semantics are motivated by the intended interpretation of the theory of constructions. The present paper is selfcontained and can be read without any familiarity with the theory of constructions, although the motivation of several of the notions considered here is given in [3]. In a future publication we will use the results of the present paper as the basis for a detailed study of a simplified form of the theory in [3].

In this paper we solve some of Pál Erdős's favorite problems on uncountably chromatic graphs. Generalizing a finite graph theory result of Tutte, Erdős and R. Rado showed that for every infinite cardinal κ there exists a triangle-free, κ-chromatic graph of size κ. For κ = ℵ0, Erdős established the existence of ℵ0-chromatic graphs excluding even C4, C5,…, Cn, i.e. circuits up to a given length. For κ < ℵ0 the situation is different. As shown by Erdős and A. Hajnal, a graph is necessarily countably chromatic if it omits any finite bipartite graph. We can, however, exclude any finite list of nonbipartite graphs (this obviously reduces to excluding finitely many odd circuits). They posed an even stronger conjecture, namely, that similar examples must occur in every uncountably chromatic graph. To be specific, they conjectured that for every infinite κ, every κ-chromatic graph contains a κ-chromatic triangle-free subgraph. Here we show that this may not be true for κ = ℵ1 i.e. we exhibit a model where it is false. We must emphasize that the conjecture is probably false already in ZFC, but we have been unable to show this.

We give strengthened versions of the Herwig–Lascar and Hodkinson–Otto extension theorems for partial automorphisms of finite structures. Such strengthenings yield several combinatorial and group-theoretic consequences for homogeneous structures. For instance, we establish a coherent form of the extension property for partial automorphisms for certain Fraïssé classes. We deduce from these results that the isometry group of the rational Urysohn space, the automorphism group of the Fraïssé limit of any Fraïssé class that is the class of all ${\cal F}$-free structures (in the Herwig–Lascar sense), and the automorphism group of any free homogeneous structure over a finite relational language all contain a dense locally finite subgroup. We also show that any free homogeneous structure admits ample generics.

We study the theory Tm,n of existentially closed incidence structures omitting the complete incidence structure Km,n, which can also be viewed as existentially closed Km,n-free bipartite graphs. In the case m = n = 2, this is the theory of existentially closed projective planes. We give an $\forall \exists$-axiomatization of Tm,n, show that Tm,n does not have a countable saturated model when m, n ≥ 2, and show that the existence of a prime model for T2,2 is equivalent to a longstanding open question about finite projective planes. Finally, we analyze model theoretic notions of complexity for Tm,n. We show that Tm,n is NSOP1, but not simple when m, n ≥ 2, and we show that Tm,n has weak elimination of imaginaries but not full elimination of imaginaries. These results rely on combinatorial characterizations of various notions of independence, including algebraic independence, Kim independence, and forking independence.

La première partie de cet article ([10], que nous désignerons par (I) dans la suite) était consacrée à la théorie élémentaire TX des algèbres de Boole munies d'idéaux distingués indéxés dans un ensemble X. On a vu que les idéaux définissables dans un modèle de Tx forment la sous-algèbre engendrée par les idéaux distingués de l'algèbre de Heyting des idéaux de munie de l'opérateur sa défini par sa(K) = {a: a/K est sans atome}, et que la théorie de peut être caractérisée par la structure composée de l'algèbre de Heyting des idéaux définissables munie de l'opérateur sa et des idéaux distingués, et par l'application qui à tout K de fait correspondre le nombre d'atomes de /K, pris dans N ⋃ {∞}.

Nous montrons maintenant que les structures possibles peuvent être définies de façon axiomatique en introduisant une classe équationnelle d'algèbres de Heyting munies d'une opération unaire, dites sa-algèbres de Heyting (en abrégé sa-AH), et en prouvant que cette classe est constituée des algèbres pouvant être plongées dans l'algèbre de Heyting des idéaux d'une algèbre de Boole, munie de l'opérateur sa. Ainsi les sont, à isomorphisme près, les sa-AH engendrées par des éléments distingués indéxés dans X; on en déduit une classification des extensions complètes de Tx en montrant que les applications qui peuvent être associées à une structure de la forme pour caractériser la théorie d'un modèle sont déterminées par leur restriction à une partie M() définie uniformément, sur laquelle elles prennent des valeurs dans (N − {0}) ⋃ {∞}, et que réciproquement toute application de M() dans (N − {0}) ⋃ {∞} est une telle restriction.

Let $ \le _c $ be computable the reducibility on computably enumerable equivalence relations (or ceers). We show that for every ceer R with infinitely many equivalence classes, the index sets $\left\{ {i:R_i \le _c R} \right\}$ (with R nonuniversal), $\left\{ {i:R_i \ge _c R} \right\}$, and $\left\{ {i:R_i \equiv _c R} \right\}$ are ${\rm{\Sigma }}_3^0$ complete, whereas in case R has only finitely many equivalence classes, we have that $\left\{ {i:R_i \le _c R} \right\}$ is ${\rm{\Pi }}_2^0$ complete, and $\left\{ {i:R \ge _c R} \right\}$ (with R having at least two distinct equivalence classes) is ${\rm{\Sigma }}_2^0$ complete. Next, solving an open problem from [1], we prove that the index set of the effectively inseparable ceers is ${\rm{\Pi }}_4^0$ complete. Finally, we prove that the 1-reducibility preordering on c.e. sets is a ${\rm{\Sigma }}_3^0$ complete preordering relation, a fact that is used to show that the preordering relation $ \le _c $ on ceers is a ${\rm{\Sigma }}_3^0$ complete preordering relation.

We describe punctual categoricity in several natural classes, including binary relational structures and mono-unary functional structures. We prove that every punctually categorical structure in a finite unary language is ${\text {PA}}(0')$-categorical, and we show that this upper bound is tight. We also construct an example of a punctually categorical structure whose degree of categoricity is $0''$. We also prove that, with a bit of work, the latter result can be pushed beyond $\Delta ^1_1$, thus showing that punctually categorical structures can possess arbitrarily complex automorphism orbits.

As a consequence, it follows that binary relational structures and unary structures are not universal with respect to primitive recursive interpretations; equivalently, in these classes every rich enough interpretation technique must necessarily involve unbounded existential quantification or infinite disjunction. In contrast, it is well-known that both classes are universal for Turing computability.

We investigate the question “To what extent can random reals be used as a tool to establish number theoretic facts?” Let 2-RAN be the principle that for every real X there is a real R which is 2-random relative to X. In Section 2, we observe that the arguments of Csima and Mileti [3] can be implemented in the base theory RCA0 and so RCA0 + 2-RAN implies the Rainbow Ramsey Theorem. In Section 3, we show that the Rainbow Ramsey Theorem is not conservative over RCA0 for arithmetic sentences. Thus, from the Csima–Mileti fact that the existence of random reals has infinitary-combinatorial consequences we can conclude that 2-RAN has non-trivial arithmetic consequences. In Section 4, we show that 2-RAN is conservative over RCA0 + BΣ2 for -sentences. Thus, the set of first-order consequences of 2-RAN is strictly stronger than P− + IΣ1 and no stronger than P− + BΣ2.

This paper compares the roles classical and intuitionistic logic play in restricting the free use of truth principles in arithmetic. We consider fifteen of the most commonly used axiomatic principles of truth and classify every subset of them as either consistent or inconsistent over a weak purely intuitionistic theory of truth.

We introduce the concept of a locally finite abstract elementary class and develop the theory of disjoint$\left( { \le \lambda ,k} \right)$-amalgamation) for such classes. From this we find a family of complete ${L_{{\omega _1},\omega }}$ sentences ${\phi _r}$ that a) homogeneously characterizes ${\aleph _r}$ (improving results of Hjorth [11] and Laskowski–Shelah [13] and answering a question of [21]), while b) the ${\phi _r}$ provide the first examples of a class of models of a complete sentence in ${L_{{\omega _1},\omega }}$ where the spectrum of cardinals in which amalgamation holds is other that none or all.

The correspondence decision problem was first formulated and shown to be recursively unsolvable in Post (1946). The method of proof was to reduce the known unsolvable decision problem for the class of normal systems on a, b to the correspondence decision problem. In the present paper the concept of a standard Post normal system is used so as to obtain some equivalence reductions of combinatorial systems. In particular the following main result is obtained.

Let A be a countable admissible set (as defined in [1], [3]). The language LA consists of all infinitary finite-quantifier formulas (identified with sets, as in [1]) that are elements of A. Notationally, LA = A ∩ Lω1ω. Then LA is a countable subset of Lω1ω, the language of all infinitary finite-quantifier formulas with all conjunctions countable. The set is the set of Lω1ω sentences defined in 2.2 below. The following theorem characterizes those A-Σ1 sets Φ of LA sentences that have uncountable models.

Main Theorem (3.1.). If Φ is an A-Σ1set of LA sentences, then the following are equivalent:

(a) Φ has an uncountable model,

(b) Φ has a model with a proper LA-elementary extension,

(c) for every , ⋀Φ → C is not valid.

This theorem was announced in [2] and is proved in §§3, 4, 5. Makkai's earlier [4, Theorem 1] implies that, if Φ determines countable structure up to Lω1ω-elementary equivalence, then (a) is equivalent to (c′) for all , ⋀Φ → C is not valid.

The requirement in 3.1 that Φ is A-Σ1 is essential when the set ω of all natural numbers is an element of A. For by the example of [2], then there is a set Φ LA sentences such that (b) holds and (a) fails; it is easier to show that, if ω ϵ A, there is a set Φ of LA sentences such that (c) holds and (b) fails.

An open U ⊆ ℝ is produced such that (ℝ, +, ·, U) defines a Borel isomorph of (ℝ, +, ·, ℕ) but does not define ℕ. It follows that (ℝ, +, ·, U) defines sets in every level of the projective hierarchy but does not define all projective sets. This result is elaborated in various ways that involve geometric measure theory and working over o-minimal expansions of (ℝ, +, ·). In particular, there is a Cantor set E ⊆ ℝ such that (ℝ, +, ·, ℕ) defines a Borel isomorph of (ℝ, +, ·, ℕ) and, for every exponentially bounded o-minimal expansion of (ℝ, +, ·), every subset of ℝ definable in (, E) either has interior or is Hausdorff null.

In [2] we described an arithmetic theory of constructions (ATC) and showed that first-order intuitionistic arithmetic (HA) could be interpreted in it. In [3] we went on to show that the interpretation of HA in ATC is faithful. The purpose of the present paper is to apply these ideas to intuitionistic arithmetic in all finite types. Tait has shown [6] that a conservative extension of HA is obtained by adding the Gödel functionals with intuitionistic logic and intensional identity in all finite types. Below we show that this extension remains conservative on the addition of certain axioms of choice which are evident on the intended interpretation of the intuitionistic logical connectives. This theorem (Corollary 6.2 below) was first obtained by a more complicated argument in our dissertation [1]. Some of its implications are discussed in Goodman and Myhill [4].

We assume that the reader is familiar with [2] and [3].

For a group G definable in a first order structure M we develop basic topological dynamics in the category of definable G-flows. In particular, we give a description of the universal definable G-ambit and of the semigroup operation on it. We find a natural epimorphism from the Ellis group of this flow to the definable Bohr compactification of G, that is to the quotient ${G^{\rm{*}}}/G_M^{{\rm{*}}00}$ (where G* is the interpretation of G in a monster model). More generally, we obtain these results locally, i.e., in the category of Δ-definable G-flows for any fixed set Δ of formulas of an appropriate form. In particular, we define local connected components $G_{{\rm{\Delta }},M}^{{\rm{*}}00}$ and $G_{{\rm{\Delta }},M}^{{\rm{*}}000}$, and show that ${G^{\rm{*}}}/G_{{\rm{\Delta }},M}^{{\rm{*}}00}$ is the Δ-definable Bohr compactification of G. We also note that some deeper arguments from [14] can be adapted to our context, showing for example that our epimorphism from the Ellis group to the Δ-definable Bohr compactification factors naturally yielding a continuous epimorphism from the Δ-definable generalized Bohr compactification to the Δ-definable Bohr compactification of G. Finally, we propose to view certain topological-dynamic and model-theoretic invariants as Polish structures which leads to some observations and questions.

We give the first systematic study of strong isomorphism reductions, a notion of reduction more appropriate than polynomial time reduction when, for example, comparing the computational complexity of the isomorphim problem for different classes of structures. We show that the partial ordering of its degrees is quite rich. We analyze its relationship to a further type of reduction between classes of structures based on purely comparing for every n the number of nonisomorphic structures of cardinality at most n in both classes. Furthermore, in a more general setting we address the question of the existence of a maximal element in the partial ordering of the degrees.

We obtain modal completeness of the interpretability logics IL $\!\!\textsf {P}_{\textsf {0}}$ and ILR w.r.t. generalised Veltman semantics. Our proofs are based on the notion of full labels [2]. We also give shorter proofs of completeness w.r.t. the generalised semantics for many classical interpretability logics. We obtain decidability and finite model property w.r.t. the generalised semantics for IL $\textsf {P}_{\textsf {0}}$ and ILR. Finally, we develop a construction that might be useful for proofs of completeness of extensions of ILW w.r.t. the generalised semantics in the future, and demonstrate its usage with $\textbf {IL}\textsf {W}^\ast = \textbf {IL}\textsf {WM}_{\textsf {0}}$ .
