Given a Borel probability measure µ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and a real matrix $R\in M_n(\mathbb{R})$. We call R a spectral eigenmatrix of the measure µ if there exists a countable set $\Lambda\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ such that the sets $E_\Lambda=\big\{{\rm e}^{2\pi i \langle\lambda,x\rangle}:\lambda\in \Lambda\big\}$ and $E_{R\Lambda}=\big\{{\rm e}^{2\pi i \langle R\lambda,x\rangle}:\lambda\in \Lambda\big\}$ are both orthonormal bases for the Hilbert space $L^2(\mu)$. In this paper, we study the structure of spectral eigenmatrix of the planar self-affine measure $\mu_{M,D}$ generated by an expanding integer matrix $M\in M_2(2\mathbb{Z})$ and the four-elements digit set $D = \{(0,0)^t,(1,0)^t,(0,1)^t,(-1,-1)^t\}$. Some sufficient and/or necessary conditions for R to be a spectral eigenmatrix of $\mu_{M,D}$ are given.

We study the geometry of Hilbert spaces with complete Pick kernels and the geometry of sets in complex hyperbolic space, taking advantage of the correspondence between the two topics. We focus on questions of assembling Hilbert spaces into larger spaces and of assembling sets into larger sets. Model questions include describing the possible three-dimensional subspaces of four-dimensional Hilbert spaces with Pick kernels and describing the possible triangular faces of a tetrahedron in $\mathbb {CH}^{n}$. A novel technical tool is a complex analog of the cosine of a vertex angle.

We show the existence of a measurable selector in Carpenter’s Theorem due to Kadison. This solves a problem posed by Jasper and the first author in an earlier work. As an application we obtain a characterization of all possible spectral functions of shift-invariant subspaces of $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ and Carpenter’s Theorem for type $\text{I}_{\infty }$ von Neumann algebras.

obtaining two characterizations of Hilbert spaces in the category of Banach spaces. We also compute the distance of a generic element $\left( h,\,k \right)\,\in \,H\,{{\oplus }_{2}}\,H$ to ${{\Pi }_{H}}$ for $H$ a Hilbert space.

In this paper, we introduce the concept of a semi-parallelogram and obtain some results for the Aleksandrov–Rassias problem using this concept. In particular, we resolve an important case of this problem for mappings preserving two distances with a nonintegral ratio.

We give a constructive proof of the carpenter's theorem due to Kadison. Unlike the original proof, our approach also yields the real case of this theorem.

We prove that, given any covering of any infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $H$ by countably many closed balls, some point exists in $H$ which belongs to infinitely many balls. We do that by characterizing isomorphically polyhedral separable Banach spaces as those whose unit sphere admits a point-finite covering by the union of countably many slices of the unit ball.

Motivated by a classical theorem of Schoenberg, we prove that an n + 1 point finite metric space has strict 2-negative type if and only if it can be isometrically embedded in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ of dimension n but it cannot be isometrically embedded in any Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{r}$ of dimension r < n. We use this result as a technical tool to study ‘roundness’ properties of additive metrics with a particular focus on ultrametrics and leaf metrics. The following conditions are shown to be equivalent for a metric space (X,d): (1) X is ultrametric, (2) X has infinite roundness, (3) X has infinite generalized roundness, (4) X has strict p-negative type for all p ≥ 0 and (5) X admits no p-polygonal equality for any p ≥ 0. As all ultrametric spaces have strict 2-negative type by (4) we thus obtain a short new proof of Lemin's theorem: Every finite ultrametric space is isometrically embeddable into some Euclidean space as an affinely independent set. Motivated by a question of Lemin, Shkarin introduced the class $\mathcal{M}$ of all finite metric spaces that may be isometrically embedded into ℓ2 as an affinely independent set. The results of this paper show that Shkarin's class $\mathcal{M}$ consists of all finite metric spaces of strict 2-negative type. We also note that it is possible to construct an additive metric space whose generalized roundness is exactly ℘ for each ℘ ∈ [1, ∞].

The self-affine measure μM, D corresponding to M = diag[p1, p2, p3] (pj ∈ ℤ \ {0, ± 1}, j = 1, 2, 3) and D = {0, e1, e2, e3} in the space ℝ3 is supported on the three-dimensional Sierpinski gasket T(M, D), where e1, e2, e3 are the standard basis of unit column vectors in ℝ3. We shall determine the spectrality and non-spectrality of μM, D, and show that if pj ∈ 2ℤ \ {0, 2} for j = 1, 2, 3, then μM, D is a spectral measure, and if pj ∈ (2ℤ + 1) \ {±1} for j = 1, 2, 3, then μM, D is a non-spectral measure and there exist at most 4 mutually orthogonal exponential functions in L2(μM, D), where the number 4 is the best possible. This generalizes the known results on the spectrality of self-affine measures.

We study Markov measures and p-adic random walks with the use of states on the Cuntz algebras Op. Via the Gelfand–Naimark–Segal construction, these come from families of representations of Op. We prove that these representations reflect selfsimilarity especially well. In this paper, we consider a Cuntz–Krieger type algebra where the adjacency matrix depends on a parameter q ( q=1 is the case of Cuntz–Krieger algebra). This is an ongoing work generalizing a construction of certain measures associated to random walks on graphs.

It is shown that every L2-summand vector of a dual real Banach space is a norm-attaining functional. As consequences, the L2-summand vectors of a dual real Banach space can be determined by the L2-summand vectors of its predual; for every n ∈ , every real Banach space can be equivalently renormed so that the set of norm-attaining functionals is n-lineable; and it is easy to find equivalent norms on non-reflexive dual real Banach spaces that are not dual norms.

Some inequalities for superadditive functionals defined on convex cones in linear spaces are given, with applications for various mappings associated with the Jensen, Hölder, Minkowski and Schwarz inequalities.

Given a finite group $G$, we examine the classification of all frame representations of $G$ and the classification of all $G$-frames, i.e., frames induced by group representations of $G$. We show that the exact number of equivalence classes of $G$-frames and the exact number of frame representations can be explicitly calculated. We also discuss how to calculate the largest number $L$ such that there exists an $L$-tuple of strongly disjoint $G$-frames.

Gromov introduced the concept of uniform embedding into Hilbert space and asked if every separable metric space admits a uniform embedding into Hilbert space. In this paper, we study uniform embedding into Hilbert space and answer Gromov’s question negatively.

In this paper we study approximations of convex functions by twice Gâteaux differentiate convex functions. We prove that convex functions (respectively norms) can be approximated by twice Gâteaux differentiate convex functions (respectively norms) in separable Banach spaces which have the Radon-Nikody m property and admit twice Gâteaux differentiable bump functions. New characterizations of spaces isomorphic to Hilbert spaces are shown. Locally uniformly rotund norms that are limits of Ck-smooth norms are constructed in separable spaces which admit Ck-smooth norms.
