The principal aim of this article is to attach and study $p$-adic $L$-functions to cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations $\Pi$ of $\operatorname {GL}_{2n}$ over a totally real field $F$ admitting a Shalika model. We use a modular symbol approach, along the global lines of the work of Ash and Ginzburg, but our results are more definitive because we draw heavily upon the methods used in the recent and separate works of all three authors. By construction, our $p$-adic $L$-functions are distributions on the Galois group of the maximal abelian extension of $F$ unramified outside $p\infty$. Moreover, we work under a weaker Panchishkine-type condition on $\Pi _p$ rather than the full ordinariness condition. Finally, we prove the so-called Manin relations between the $p$-adic $L$-functions at all critical points. This has the striking consequence that, given a unitary $\Pi$ whose standard $L$-function admits at least two critical points, and given a prime $p$ such that $\Pi _p$ is ordinary, the central critical value $L(\frac {1}{2}, \Pi \otimes \chi )$ is non-zero for all except finitely many Dirichlet characters $\chi$ of $p$-power conductor.

Yoshikawa in [Invent. Math. 156 (2004), 53–117] introduces a holomorphic torsion invariant of $K3$ surfaces with involution. In this paper we completely determine its structure as an automorphic function on the moduli space of such $K3$ surfaces. On every component of the moduli space, it is expressed as the product of an explicit Borcherds lift and a classical Siegel modular form. We also introduce its twisted version. We prove its modularity and a certain uniqueness of the modular form corresponding to the twisted holomorphic torsion invariant. This is used to study an equivariant analogue of Borcherds’ conjecture.

We compute the $\text{Pin}(2)$-equivariant Seiberg–Witten Floer homology of Seifert rational homology three-spheres in terms of their Heegaard Floer homology. As a result of this computation, we prove Manolescu’s conjecture that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}=-\bar{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}}$ for Seifert integral homology three-spheres. We show that the Manolescu invariants $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD},$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$ give new obstructions to homology cobordisms between Seifert fiber spaces, and that many Seifert homology spheres $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}(a_{1},\ldots ,a_{n})$ are not homology cobordant to any $-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}(b_{1},\ldots ,b_{n})$. We then use the same invariants to give an example of an integral homology sphere not homology cobordant to any Seifert fiber space. We also show that the $\text{Pin}(2)$-equivariant Seiberg–Witten Floer spectrum provides homology cobordism obstructions distinct from $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD},$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$. In particular, we identify an $\mathbb{F}[U]$-module called connected Seiberg–Witten Floer homology, whose isomorphism class is a homology cobordism invariant.

We compute the $g=1$, $n=1$ B-model Gromov–Witten invariant of an elliptic curve $E$ directly from the derived category $\mathsf{D}_{\mathsf{coh}}^{b}(E)$. More precisely, we carry out the computation of the categorical Gromov–Witten invariant defined by Costello using as target a cyclic $\mathscr{A}_{\infty }$ model of $\mathsf{D}_{\mathsf{coh}}^{b}(E)$ described by Polishchuk. This is the first non-trivial computation of a positive-genus categorical Gromov–Witten invariant, and the result agrees with the prediction of mirror symmetry: it matches the classical (non-categorical) Gromov–Witten invariants of a symplectic 2-torus computed by Dijkgraaf.

A well-known conjecture, often attributed to Serre, asserts that any motive over any number field has infinitely many ordinary reductions (in the sense that the Newton polygon coincides with the Hodge polygon). In the case of Hilbert modular cuspforms $f$ of parallel weight $(2,\ldots ,2)$, we show how to produce more ordinary primes by using the Sato–Tate equidistribution and combining it with the Galois theory of the Hecke field. Under the assumption of stronger forms of Sato–Tate equidistribution, we get stronger (but conditional) results. In the case of higher weights, we formulate the ordinariness conjecture for submotives of the intersection cohomology of proper algebraic varieties with motivic coefficients, and verify it for the motives whose $\ell$-adic Galois realisations are abelian on a finite-index subgroup. We get some results for Hilbert cuspforms of weight $(3,\ldots ,3)$, weaker than those for $(2,\ldots ,2)$.

In this paper, we establish a vanishing theorem of Nadel type for the Witt multiplier ideals on threefolds over perfect fields of characteristic larger than five. As an application, if a projective normal threefold over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ is not klt and its canonical divisor is anti-ample, then the number of the rational points on the klt-locus is divisible by $q$.

We develop some foundational results in a higher-dimensional foliated Mori theory, and show how these results can be used to prove a structure theorem for the Kleiman–Mori cone of curves in terms of the numerical properties of $K_{{\mathcal{F}}}$ for rank 2 foliations on threefolds. We also make progress toward realizing a minimal model program (MMP) for rank 2 foliations on threefolds.

We prove that for each characteristic direction $[v]$ of a tangent to the identity diffeomorphism of order $k+1$ in $(\mathbb{C}^{2},0)$ there exist either an analytic curve of fixed points tangent to $[v]$ or $k$ parabolic manifolds where all the orbits are tangent to $[v]$, and that at least one of these parabolic manifolds is or contains a parabolic curve.

We define variants of PEL type of the Shimura varieties that appear in the context of the arithmetic Gan–Gross–Prasad (AGGP) conjecture. We formulate for them a version of the AGGP conjecture. We also construct (global and semi-global) integral models of these Shimura varieties and formulate for them conjectures on arithmetic intersection numbers. We prove some of these conjectures in low dimension.

The (tree) amplituhedron $\mathcal {A}_{n,k,m}(Z)$ is a certain subset of the Grassmannian introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka in 2013 in order to study scattering amplitudes in $N=4$ supersymmetric Yang–Mills theory. Confirming a conjecture of the first author, we show that when $m$ is even, a collection of affine permutations yields a triangulation of $\mathcal {A}_{n,k,m}(Z)$ for any $Z\in \operatorname {Gr}_{>0}(k+m,n)$ if and only if the collection of their inverses yields a triangulation of $\mathcal {A}_{n,n-m-k,m}(Z)$ for any $Z\in \operatorname {Gr}_{>0}(n-k,n)$. We prove this duality using the twist map of Marsh and Scott. We also show that this map preserves the canonical differential forms associated with the corresponding positroid cells, and hence obtain a parity duality for amplituhedron differential forms.

We show that every coarse moduli space, parametrizing complex special linear rank-2 local systems with fixed boundary traces on a surface with nonempty boundary, is log Calabi–Yau in that it has a normal projective compactification with trivial log canonical divisor. We connect this to a novel symmetry of generating series for counts of essential multicurves on the surface.

Let $G$ be a connected split reductive group over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ and $X$ a smooth projective geometrically connected curve over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. The $\ell$-adic cohomology of stacks of $G$-shtukas is a generalization of the space of automorphic forms with compact support over the function field of $X$. In this paper, we construct a constant term morphism on the cohomology of stacks of shtukas which is a generalization of the constant term morphism for automorphic forms. We also define the cuspidal cohomology which generalizes the space of cuspidal automorphic forms. Then we show that the cuspidal cohomology has finite dimension and that it is equal to the (rationally) Hecke-finite cohomology defined by V. Lafforgue.

We study the derived category of a complete intersection $X$ of bilinear divisors in the orbifold $\operatorname{Sym}^{2}\mathbb{P}(V)$. Our results are in the spirit of Kuznetsov’s theory of homological projective duality, and we describe a homological projective duality relation between $\operatorname{Sym}^{2}\mathbb{P}(V)$ and a category of modules over a sheaf of Clifford algebras on $\mathbb{P}(\operatorname{Sym}^{2}V^{\vee })$. The proof follows a recently developed strategy combining variation of geometric invariant theory (VGIT) stability and categories of global matrix factorisations. We begin by translating $D^{b}(X)$ into a derived category of factorisations on a Landau–Ginzburg (LG) model, and then apply VGIT to obtain a birational LG model. Finally, we interpret the derived factorisation category of the new LG model as a Clifford module category. In some cases we can compute this Clifford module category as the derived category of a variety. As a corollary we get a new proof of a result of Hosono and Takagi, which says that a certain pair of non-birational Calabi–Yau 3-folds have equivalent derived categories.

We consider the question of when a rational homology $3$-sphere is rational homology cobordant to a connected sum of lens spaces. We prove that every rational homology cobordism class in the subgroup generated by lens spaces is represented by a unique connected sum of lens spaces whose first homology group injects in the first homology group of any other element in the same class. As a first consequence, we show that several natural maps to the rational homology cobordism group have infinite-rank cokernels. Further consequences include a divisibility condition between the determinants of a connected sum of $2$-bridge knots and any other knot in the same concordance class. Lastly, we use knot Floer homology combined with our main result to obstruct Dehn surgeries on knots from being rationally cobordant to lens spaces.

We prove that algebraic solutions of Garnier systems in the irregular case are of two types. The classical ones come from isomonodromic deformations of linear equations with diagonal or dihedral differential Galois group; we give a complete list in the rank-2 case (two indeterminates). The pull-back ones come from deformations of coverings over a fixed degenerate hypergeometric equation; we provide a complete list when the differential Galois group is $\text{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{C})$. As a byproduct, we obtain a complete list of algebraic solutions for the rank-2 irregular Garnier systems.

Using Auroux’s description of Fukaya categories of symmetric products of punctured surfaces, we compute the partially wrapped Fukaya category of the complement of $k+1$ generic hyperplanes in $\mathbb{CP}^{n}$, for $k\geqslant n$, with respect to certain stops in terms of the endomorphism algebra of a generating set of objects. The stops are chosen so that the resulting algebra is formal. In the case of the complement of $n+2$ generic hyperplanes in $\mathbb{C}P^{n}$ ($n$-dimensional pair of pants), we show that our partial wrapped Fukaya category is equivalent to a certain categorical resolution of the derived category of the singular affine variety $x_{1}x_{2}\ldots x_{n+1}=0$. By localizing, we deduce that the (fully) wrapped Fukaya category of the $n$-dimensional pair of pants is equivalent to the derived category of $x_{1}x_{2}\ldots x_{n+1}=0$. We also prove similar equivalences for finite abelian covers of the $n$-dimensional pair of pants.

We study compact complex three-dimensional manifolds with vanishing second Betti number. In particular, we show that a compact complex manifold homeomorphic to the six-dimensional sphere does carry any non-constant meromorphic function.

Let $\mathcal {A} \rightarrow S$ be an abelian scheme over an irreducible variety over $\mathbb {C}$ of relative dimension $g$. For any simply-connected subset $\Delta$ of $S^{\mathrm {an}}$ one can define the Betti map from $\mathcal {A}_{\Delta }$ to $\mathbb {T}^{2g}$, the real torus of dimension $2g$, by identifying each closed fiber of $\mathcal {A}_{\Delta } \rightarrow \Delta$ with $\mathbb {T}^{2g}$ via the Betti homology. Computing the generic rank of the Betti map restricted to a subvariety $X$ of $\mathcal {A}$ is useful to study Diophantine problems, e.g. proving the geometric Bogomolov conjecture over char $0$ and studying the relative Manin–Mumford conjecture. In this paper we give a geometric criterion to detect this rank. As an application we show that it is maximal after taking a large fibered power (if $X$ satisfies some conditions); it is an important step to prove the bound for the number of rational points on curves (Dimitrov et al., Uniformity in Mordell–Lang for Curves, Preprint (2020), arXiv:2001.10276). Another application is to answer a question of André, Corvaja and Zannier and improve a result of Voisin. We also systematically study its link with the relative Manin–Mumford conjecture, reducing the latter to a simpler conjecture. Our tools are functional transcendence and unlikely intersections for mixed Shimura varieties.

Let $X$ be a topological space. We consider certain generalized configuration spaces of points on $X$, obtained from the cartesian product $X^{n}$ by removing some intersections of diagonals. We give a systematic framework for studying the cohomology of such spaces using what we call ‘twisted commutative dg algebra models’ for the cochains on $X$. Suppose that $X$ is a ‘nice’ topological space, $R$ is any commutative ring, $H_{c}^{\bullet }(X,R)\rightarrow H^{\bullet }(X,R)$ is the zero map, and that $H_{c}^{\bullet }(X,R)$ is a projective $R$-module. We prove that the compact support cohomology of any generalized configuration space of points on $X$ depends only on the graded $R$-module $H_{c}^{\bullet }(X,R)$. This generalizes a theorem of Arabia.

We show that the compactly supported cohomology of certain $\text{U}(n,n)$- or $\text{Sp}(2n)$-Shimura varieties with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{1}(p^{\infty })$-level vanishes above the middle degree. The only assumption is that we work over a CM field $F$ in which the prime $p$ splits completely. We also give an application to Galois representations for torsion in the cohomology of the locally symmetric spaces for $\text{GL}_{n}/F$. More precisely, we use the vanishing result for Shimura varieties to eliminate the nilpotent ideal in the construction of these Galois representations. This strengthens recent results of Scholze [On torsion in the cohomology of locally symmetric varieties, Ann. of Math. (2) 182 (2015), 945–1066; MR 3418533] and Newton–Thorne [Torsion Galois representations over CM fields and Hecke algebras in the derived category, Forum Math. Sigma 4 (2016), e21; MR 3528275].
