Minimal submanifolds of a Euclidean space are contained in a much larger class of submanifolds, namely in the class of submanifolds of finite type. Submanifolds of finite type were introduced about a decade ago by B. Y. Chen in [2]; the first results on this subject have been collected in the books [2], [3].

In [6], Wong defined a quasi-permutation group of degree n to be a finite group G of automorphisms of an n-dimensional complex vector space such that every element of G has non-negative integral trace. The terminology derives from the fact that if G is a finite group of permutations of a set ω of size n, and we think of G as acting on the complex vector space with basis ω, then the trace of an element g ∈ G is equal to the number of points of ω fixed by g. In [6] and [7], Wong studied the extent to which some facts about permutation groups generalize to the quasi-permutation group situation. Here we investigate further the analogy between permutation groups and quasipermutation groups by studying the relation between the minimal degree of a faithful permutation representation of a given finite group G and the minimal degree of a faithful quasi-permutation representation. We shall often prefer to work over the rational field rather than the complex field.

In [13] Mazet proved the following result.

If U is an open subset of a locally convex space E then there exists a complete locally convex space (U) and a holomorphic mapping δU: U→(U) such that for any complete locally convex space F and any f ɛ ℋ (U;F), the space of holomorphic mappings from U to F, there exists a unique linear mapping Tf: (U)→F such that the following diagram commutes;

The space (U) is unique up to a linear topological isomorphism. Previously, similar but less general constructions, have been considered by Ryan [16] and Schottenloher [17].

where Mm is a compact and Nn a complete Riemannian manifold of dimensions m and n respectively. In a recent paper [3], Takeuchi has proved that for a certain class of simply-connected δ-pinched Nn and certain type of hypersurface Nn in ℝn+1, the only stable p-harmonic maps for any compact Mm are the constant maps. Our purpose in this note is to establish the following theorem which complements Takeuchi's results.

Let X be a compact Hausdorff space, let C(X) denote the algebra of all continuous functions on X, let B be a Banach algebra, and let θ: → C(X) → B be a (possibly discontinuous) homomorphism with dense range. A classical theorem by W. G. Bade and P. C. Curtis ([2, Theorem 4.3]) describes in great detail the structure of θ we shall refer to this result as the Bade–Curtis theorem. Before we give a brief sketch of this theorem, we fix some notation. For Y ⊂ X let I(Y) and J(Y) denote the ideals of all functions in C(X) that vanish on Y and on a neighborhood of Y respectively; if Y = {x} for some x ɛ X, we write mx and Jx for I(Y) and J(Y) respectively. According to the Bade–Curtis theorem there is a finite set {x1,…, xn) ⊂ X, the so-called singularity set of θ, such that θ | ({x1, …, xn}) is continuous. As a consequence, the restriction of θ to the dense subalgebra of C (X) consisting of all those functions which are constant near each Xj (j = 1,…, n) is continuous, and extends to a continuous homomorphism θcont: C(X)→ B. Let θsing: = θ – θcont. Then θsing | I({x1,…, xn}) is a homomorphism onto a dense subalgebra of rad (B). θcont, and θsing are called the continuous and the singular part of θ respectively. Moreover, there are linear maps : C(X)⊒ B such that

We use a simple approximation method to prove the Holder continuity of the generalized de Rham functions.

Let V be a regular semigroup and an ideal extension of a semigroup S by a semigroup Q Congruences on V can be represented by triples of the form (σ, P, τ), here called admissible, where a is a congruence on S, P is an ideal of Q and τ is a O-restricted congruence on Q/P satisfying certain conditions. We characterize the trace relation T on V in terms of admissible triples. When the extension V of S is strict, for a congruence v on V given in terms of an admissible triple, we characterize vK, vK, vT and vT again in terms of admissible triples.

Here we extend an arithmetical inequality about multiplicative functions obtained by K. Alladi, P. Erdős and J. D. Vaaler, to include also the case of submultiplicative functions. Also an alternative proof of an extension of a result used for this purpose is given.

In this paper we consider complex doubles of compact Klein surfaces that have large automorphism groups. It is known that a bordered Klein surface of algebraic genus g > 2 has at most 12(g − 1) automorphisms. Surfaces for which this bound is sharp are said to have maximal symmetry. The complex double of such a surface X is a compact Riemann surface X+ of genus g and it is easy to see that if G is the group of automorphisms of X then C2 × G is a group of automorphisms of X+. A natural question is whether X+ can have a group that strictly contains C2 × G. In [8] C. L. May claimed the following interesting result: there is a unique Klein surface X with maximal symmetry for which Aut X+ properly contains C2 × Aut X (where Aut X+ denotes the group of conformal and anticonformal automorphisms of X+).

A group is called metacyclic in case both its commutator subgroup and commutator quotient group are cyclic. Thus a metacyclic group is a cyclic extension of a cyclic group, and metacyclic groups are among the best understood of the nonabelian groups. Many interesting groups are metacyclic. For instance, the dihedral groups and the “odd” dicyclic groups are metacyclic; see [4, pp. 9–11] for more examples. Here we shall consider the actions of these groups on bordered Klein surfaces.

Suppose that T and S are continuous linear operators on complex Banach spaces X and Y, respectively, and that A is a non-zero continuous linear mapping from X to Y. If A intertwines T and S in the sense that SA = AT, then a classical result due to Rosenblum implies that the spectra σ(T) and σ(S) must overlap, see [12]. Actually, Davis and Rosenthal [5]have shown that the surjectivity spectrum σsu(T) will meet the approximate point spectrum σap(S) in this case (terms to be denned below). Further information about the relations between the two spectra and their finer structure becomes available when the intertwiner A is injective or has dense range, see [9], [12], [13].

Consider any group G. A [G, 2]-complex is a connected 2-dimensional CW-complex with fundamental group G. If X is a [G, 2]-complex and L is a subgroup of G, let XL denote the covering complex of X corresponding to the subgroup L. We say that a [G, 2]-complex is L-Cockcroft if the Hurewicz map hL:π2(X)→;H2(XL) is trivial. In case L = G we call X Cockcroft. There are interesting classes of 2-complexes that have the Cockcroft property. A [G, 2]-complex X is aspherical if π2(X) = 0. It was observed in [4] that a subcomplex of an aspherical 2-complex is Cockcroft. The Cockcroft property is of interest to group theorists as well. Let X be a [G, 2]-complex modelled on a presentation (〈S; R〉 of the group G. If it can be shown that X is Cockcroft, then it follows from Hopf's theorem (see [2, p. 31]) that H2(G) is isomorphic to H2(X). In particular H2(G) is free abelian. For a survey on the Cockcroft property see Dyer [5]. A collection {Gα: α ∈ Ώ} of subgroups of a group G that is totally ordered by inclusion is called a chain of subgroups of G. Denning β ≤ α if and only if Gα ≤ Gβ makes Ώ into a totally ordered set. The main result of this paper is the following theorem.

In the present note, Σr denotes the class of all right pure semisimple rings (= right pure global dimension zero). It is known that if R ∈ Σr, then R is right artinian and every indecomposable right R-module is finitely generated. The class Σr is not closed under ultraproducts [4]. While Σr is closed under elementary descent (i.e. if S ∈ Σr and R is an elementary subring of S then R ∈ σr) [4], it is an open question whether right pure-semisimplicity is preserved under the passage to ultrapowers [4, Prob. 11.16]. In this note, this question is answered in the affirmative.

In this paper we give new information about the conjugacy vector of the group , the Sylow p-subgroup of GL(n, q) consisting of the upper unitriangular matrices. The first two components of this vector are given in [4]. Here, we obtain the third component, that is, the number of conjugacy classes whose centralizer has qn+l elements. Besides, we give the whole set of numbers which compose this vector:

Throughout the paper we consider only finite groups.

J. C. Beidleman and H. Smith [3] have proposed the following question: “If G is a group and Ha subnormal subgroup of G containing Φ(G), the Frattini subgroup of G, such that H/Φ(G)is supersoluble, is H necessarily supersoluble? “In this paper, we give not only an affirmative answer to this question but also we see that the above result still holds if supersoluble is replaced by any saturated formation containing the class of all nilpotent groups.

One of the most important results of operator theory is the spectral theorem for normal operators. This states that a normal operator (that is, a Hilbert space operator T such that T*T= TT*), can be represented as an integral with respect to a countably additive spectral measure,

Here E is a measure that associates an orthogonal projection with each Borel subset of ℂ. The countable additivity of this measure means that if x Eℋ can be written as a sum of eigenvectors then this sum must converge unconditionally.

In [3], McAlister introduced a class of semigroups, called covering semigroups, which were shown to play an important role in the theory of E-unitary covers of semigroups. Strangely, this class of semigroups appears to have received little attention subsequently. It is the aim of this paper to rehabilitate them and to study their properties in more detail. As a first step, we have chosen to rename them almost factorisable semigroups, since they can be regarded as the semigroup analogues of factorisable inverse monoids. Before discussing the contents of this paper in more detail we recall some standard terminology.

It is reasonable to expect that the representation theory of an algebra (finite dimensional over a field, basic and connected) can be used to study its homological properties. In particular, much is known about the structure of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of an algebra, which records most of the information we have on its module category. We ask whether one can predict the homological dimensions of a module from its position in the Auslander-Reiten quiver. We are particularly interested in the case where the algebra is a tilted algebra. This class of algebras of global dimension two, introduced by Happel and Ringel in [7], has since then been the subject of many investigations, and its representation theory is well understood by now (see, for instance, [1], [7], [8], [9], [11], [13]).In this case, the most striking feature of the Auslander-Reiten quiver is the existence of complete slices, which reproduce the quiver of the hereditary algebra from which the tilted algebra arises. It follows from well-known results that any indecomposable successor (or predecessor) of a complete slice has injective (or projective, respectively) dimension at most one, from which one deduces that a tilted algebra is representation-finite if and only if both the projective and the injective dimensions of almost all (that is, all but at most finitely many non-isomorphic) indecomposable modules equal two (see (3.1) and (3.2)). On the other hand, the authors have shown in [2, (3.4)] that a representation-infinite algebra is concealed if and only if both the projective and the injective dimensions of almost all indecomposable modules equal one (see also [14]). This leads us to consider, for tilted algebras which are not concealed, the case when the projective (or injective) dimension of almost all indecomposable successors (or predecessors, respectively) of a complete slice equal two. In order to answer this question, we define the notions of left and right type of a tilted algebra, then those of reduced left and right types (see (2.2) and (3.4) for the definitions).
