Let $G$ be a simple connected graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges and $d_{1}\geq d_{2}\geq \cdots \geq d_{n}>0$ its sequence of vertex degrees. If $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{1}\geq \unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{2}\geq \cdots \geq \unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{n-1}>\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{n}=0$ are the Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$, then the Kirchhoff index of $G$ is $\mathit{Kf}(G)=n\sum _{i=1}^{n-1}\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{i}^{-1}$. We prove some new lower bounds for $\mathit{Kf}(G)$ in terms of some of the parameters $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}=d_{1}$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}_{2}=d_{2}$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}_{3}=d_{3}$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}=d_{n}$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{2}=d_{n-1}$ and the topological index $\mathit{NK}=\prod _{i=1}^{n}d_{i}$.

Let $a_{1},a_{2},\ldots ,a_{m}$ and $b_{1},b_{2},\ldots ,b_{l}$ be two sequences of pairwise distinct positive integers greater than $1$. Assume also that none of the above numbers is a perfect power. If for each positive integer $n$ and prime number $p$ the number $\prod _{i=1}^{m}(1-a_{i}^{n})$ is divisible by $p$ if and only if the number $\prod _{j=1}^{l}(1-b_{j}^{n})$ is divisible by $p$, then $m=l$ and $\{a_{1},a_{2},\ldots ,a_{m}\}=\{b_{1},b_{2},\ldots ,b_{l}\}$.

Let $n\geq 1$ be an integer and $f$ be an arithmetical function. Let $S=\{x_{1},\ldots ,x_{n}\}$ be a set of $n$ distinct positive integers with the property that $d\in S$ if $x\in S$ and $d|x$. Then $\min (S)=1$. Let $(f(S))=(f(\gcd (x_{i},x_{j})))$ and $(f[S])=(f(\text{lcm}(x_{i},x_{j})))$ denote the $n\times n$ matrices whose $(i,j)$-entries are $f$ evaluated at the greatest common divisor of $x_{i}$ and $x_{j}$ and the least common multiple of $x_{i}$ and $x_{j}$, respectively. In 1875, Smith [‘On the value of a certain arithmetical determinant’, Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. 7 (1875–76), 208–212] showed that $\det (f(S))=\prod _{l=1}^{n}(f\ast \unicode[STIX]{x1D707})(x_{l})$, where $f\ast \unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ is the Dirichlet convolution of $f$ and the Möbius function $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$. Bourque and Ligh [‘Matrices associated with classes of multiplicative functions’, Linear Algebra Appl. 216 (1995), 267–275] computed the determinant $\det (f[S])$ if $f$ is multiplicative and, Hong, Hu and Lin [‘On a certain arithmetical determinant’, Acta Math. Hungar. 150 (2016), 372–382] gave formulae for the determinants $\det (f(S\setminus \{1\}))$ and $\det (f[S\setminus \{1\}])$. In this paper, we evaluate the determinant $\det (f(S\setminus \{x_{t}\}))$ for any integer $t$ with $1\leq t\leq n$ and also the determinant $\det (f[S\setminus \{x_{t}\}])$ if $f$ is multiplicative.

Let $K$ be an algebraic number field. A cuboid is said to be $K$-rational if its edges and face diagonals lie in $K$. A $K$-rational cuboid is said to be perfect if its body diagonal lies in $K$. The existence of perfect $\mathbb{Q}$-rational cuboids is an unsolved problem. We prove here that there are infinitely many distinct cubic fields $K$ such that a perfect $K$-rational cuboid exists; and that, for every integer $n\geq 2$, there is an algebraic number field $K$ of degree $n$ such that there exists a perfect $K$-rational cuboid.

In this paper, we investigate the two-dimensional shrinking target problem in beta-dynamical systems. Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}>1$ be a real number and define the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$-transformation on $[0,1]$ by $T_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}}:x\rightarrow \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}x\;\text{mod}\;1$. Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9}_{i}$ ($i=1,2$) be two positive functions on $\mathbb{N}$ such that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9}_{i}\rightarrow 0$ when $n\rightarrow \infty$. We determine the Lebesgue measure and Hausdorff dimension for the $\limsup$ set

Recently, Freiman et al. [‘Small doubling in ordered groups’, J. Aust. Math. Soc. 96(3) (2014), 316–325] proved two ‘structure theorems’ for ordered groups. We give elementary proofs of these two theorems.

For any integer $m\neq 0$, we prove that $f(x)=x^{9}+9mx^{6}+192m^{3}$ is irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$ and that the Galois group of $f(x)$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ is the dihedral group of order 18. Moreover, we show that for infinitely many values of $m$, the splitting fields for $f(x)$ are distinct.

Kang and Liu [‘On supersolvability of factorized finite groups’, Bull. Math. Sci.3 (2013), 205–210] investigate the structure of finite groups that are products of two supersoluble groups. The goal of this note is to give a correct proof of their main theorem.

Let a prime $p$ divide the order of a finite real reflection group. We classify the reflection subgroups up to conjugacy that are minimal with respect to inclusion, subject to containing a $p$-Sylow subgroup. For Weyl groups, this is achieved by an algorithm inspired by the Borel–de Siebenthal algorithm. The cases where there is not a unique conjugacy class of reflection subgroups minimally containing the $p$-Sylow subgroups are the groups of type $F_{4}$ when $p=2$ and $I_{2}(m)$ when $m\geq 6$ is even but not a power of $2$ for each odd prime divisor $p$ of $m$. The classification significantly reduces the cases required to describe the $p$-Sylow subgroups of finite real reflection groups.

We examine dynamical systems which are ‘nonchaotic’ on a big (in the sense of Lebesgue measure) set in each neighbourhood of a fixed point $x_{0}$, that is, the entropy of this system is zero on a set for which $x_{0}$ is a density point. Considerations connected with this family of functions are linked with functions attracting positive entropy at $x_{0}$, that is, each mapping sufficiently close to the function has positive entropy on each neighbourhood of $x_{0}$.

The main aim of this article is to establish analogues of Landau’s theorem for solutions to the $\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x2202}}$-equation in Dirichlet-type spaces.

Let ${\mathcal{H}}ol(B_{d})$ denote the space of holomorphic functions on the unit ball $B_{d}$ of $\mathbb{C}^{d}$, $d\geq 1$. Given a log-convex strictly positive weight $w(r)$ on $[0,1)$, we construct a function $f\in {\mathcal{H}}ol(B_{d})$ such that the standard integral means $M_{p}(f,r)$ and $w(r)$ are equivalent for any $p$ with $0<p\leq \infty$. We also obtain similar results related to volume integral means.

We give a succinct proof of a duality theorem obtained by Révész [‘Some trigonometric extremal problems and duality’, J. Aust. Math. Soc. Ser. A 50 (1991), 384–390] which concerns extremal quantities related to trigonometric polynomials. The key tool of our new proof is an intersection formula on dual cones in real Banach spaces. We show another application of this intersection formula which is related to integral estimates of nonnegative positive-definite functions.

We construct travelling waves in the Burgers equation with the fractional Laplacian $(D^{2})^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\in (1/2,1)$. This is done by first constructing odd solutions $u_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}}$ of $uu^{\prime }=K_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}_{1}}\ast u-k_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}_{1}}u+\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}_{2}u^{\prime \prime }$, $u(-\infty )=u_{c}>0$, with $K_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}_{1}}\ast u-k_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}_{1}}u$ nonsingular, and then passing to the limit $\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}_{1},\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}_{2}\rightarrow 0$, to give $K_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}_{1}}\ast u_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}}-k_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}_{1}}u_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}}\rightarrow (D^{2})^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}u_{0}$ pointwise. The proof relies on operator splitting.

For a Tychonoff space $X$, let $\mathbb{V}(X)$ be the free topological vector space over $X$, $A(X)$ the free abelian topological group over $X$ and $\mathbb{I}$ the unit interval with its usual topology. It is proved here that if $X$ is a subspace of $\mathbb{I}$, then the following are equivalent: $\mathbb{V}(X)$ can be embedded in $\mathbb{V}(\mathbb{I})$ as a topological vector subspace; $A(X)$ can be embedded in $A(\mathbb{I})$ as a topological subgroup; $X$ is locally compact.

We show that if $M\,\bar{\rtimes }_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ has the weak Haagerup property, then both $M$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ have the weak Haagerup property, and if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ is an amenable group, then the weak Haagerup property of $M$ implies that of $M\,\bar{\rtimes }_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$. We also give a condition under which the weak Haagerup property for $M$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ implies that of $M\,\bar{\rtimes }_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$.

We show that every topological grading of a $C^{\ast }$-algebra by a discrete abelian group is implemented by an action of the compact dual group.

The theory of almost invariant half-spaces for operators on Banach spaces was begun recently and is now under active development. Much less attention has been given to almost invariant half-spaces for operators on Hilbert space, where some techniques and results are available that are not present in the more general context of Banach spaces. In this note, we begin such a study. Our much simpler and shorter proofs of the main theorems have important consequences for the matricial structure of arbitrary operators on Hilbert space.

We consider a scale invariant Cassinian metric and a Gromov hyperbolic metric. We discuss a distortion property of the scale invariant Cassinian metric under Möbius maps of a punctured ball onto another punctured ball. We obtain a modulus of continuity of the identity map from a domain equipped with the scale invariant Cassinian metric (or the Gromov hyperbolic metric) onto the same domain equipped with the Euclidean metric. Finally, we establish the quasi-invariance properties of both metrics under quasiconformal maps.

We use the pointwise Lipschitz constant to define an upper Lyapunov exponent for maps on metric spaces different to that given by Kifer [‘Characteristic exponents of dynamical systems in metric spaces’, Ergodic Theory Dynam. Systems3(1) (1983), 119–127]. We prove that this exponent reduces to that of Bessa and Silva on Riemannian manifolds and is not larger than that of Kifer at stable points. We also prove that it is invariant along orbits in the case of (topological) diffeomorphisms and under topological conjugacy. Moreover, the periodic orbits where this exponent is negative are asymptotically stable. Finally, we estimate this exponent for certain hyperbolic homeomorphisms.
