In this note, we give an upper bound for the number of elements from the interval $[1,p^{1/4\sqrt{e}+\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}}]$ necessary to generate the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p}^{\ast }$ with $p$ an odd prime. The general result depends on the distribution of the divisors of $p-1$ and can be used to deduce results which hold for almost all primes.

The $l_{0}$-minimisation problem has attracted much attention in recent years with the development of compressive sensing. The spark of a matrix is an important measure that can determine whether a given sparse vector is the solution of an $l_{0}$-minimisation problem. However, its calculation involves a combinatorial search over all possible subsets of columns of the matrix, which is an NP-hard problem. We use Weyl’s theorem to give two new lower bounds for the spark of a matrix. One is based on the mutual coherence and the other on the coherence function. Numerical examples are given to show that the new bounds can be significantly better than existing ones.

For a graph $G$, let $f(G)$ denote the maximum number of edges in a bipartite subgraph of $G$. For an integer $m$ and for a fixed graph $H$, let $f(m,H)$ denote the minimum possible cardinality of $f(G)$ as $G$ ranges over all graphs on $m$ edges that contain no copy of $H$. We give a general lower bound for $f(m,H)$ which extends a result of Erdős and Lovász and we study this function for any bipartite graph $H$ with maximum degree at most $t\geq 2$ on one side.

Rodriguez-Villegas conjectured four supercongruences associated to certain elliptic curves, which were first confirmed by Mortenson by using the Gross–Koblitz formula. In this paper we prove four supercongruences between two truncated hypergeometric series $_{2}F_{1}$. The results generalise the four Rodriguez-Villegas supercongruences.

We classify all polynomials $P(X)\in \mathbb{Q}[X]$ with rational coefficients having the property that the quotient $(\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{i}-\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{j})/(\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{k}-\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{\ell })$ is a rational number for all quadruples of roots $(\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{i},\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{j},\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{k},\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{\ell })$ with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{k}\neq \unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{\ell }$.

Given a poset $P$ and a standard closure operator $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}:{\wp}(P)\rightarrow {\wp}(P)$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the lattice of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$-closed sets of ${\wp}(P)$ to be a frame in terms of the recursive construction of the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$-closure of sets. We use this condition to show that, given a set ${\mathcal{U}}$ of distinguished joins from $P$, the lattice of ${\mathcal{U}}$-ideals of $P$ fails to be a frame if and only if it fails to be $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$-distributive, with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$ depending on the cardinalities of sets in ${\mathcal{U}}$. From this we deduce that if a poset has the property that whenever $a\wedge (b\vee c)$ is defined for $a,b,c\in P$ it is necessarily equal to $(a\wedge b)\vee (a\wedge c)$, then it has an $(\unicode[STIX]{x1D714},3)$-representation.

Schmidt [‘Integer points on curves of genus 1’, Compos. Math. 81 (1992), 33–59] conjectured that the number of integer points on the elliptic curve defined by the equation $y^{2}=x^{3}+ax^{2}+bx+c$, with $a,b,c\in \mathbb{Z}$, is $O_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}}(\max \{1,|a|,|b|,|c|\}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}})$ for any $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}>0$. On the other hand, Duke [‘Bounds for arithmetic multiplicities’, Proc. Int. Congress Mathematicians, Vol. II (1998), 163–172] conjectured that the number of algebraic number fields of given degree and discriminant $D$ is $O_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}}(|D|^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}})$. In this note, we prove that Duke’s conjecture for quartic number fields implies Schmidt’s conjecture. We also give a short unconditional proof of Schmidt’s conjecture for the elliptic curve $y^{2}=x^{3}+ax$.

The quotient set of $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ is defined as $R(A):=\{a/b:a,b\in A,b\neq 0\}$. Using algebraic number theory in $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5})$, Garcia and Luca [‘Quotients of Fibonacci numbers’, Amer. Math. Monthly, to appear] proved that the quotient set of Fibonacci numbers is dense in the $p$-adic numbers $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ for all prime numbers $p$. For any integer $k\geq 2$, let $(F_{n}^{(k)})_{n\geq -(k-2)}$ be the sequence of $k$-generalised Fibonacci numbers, defined by the initial values $0,0,\ldots ,0,1$ ($k$ terms) and such that each successive term is the sum of the $k$ preceding terms. We use $p$-adic analysis to generalise the result of Garcia and Luca, by proving that the quotient set of $k$-generalised Fibonacci numbers is dense in $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ for any integer $k\geq 2$ and any prime number $p$.

Robin’s criterion states that the Riemann hypothesis is true if and only if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}(n)<e^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}}n\log \log n$ for every positive integer $n\geq 5041$. In this paper we establish a new unconditional upper bound for the sum of divisors function, which improves the current best unconditional estimate given by Robin. For this purpose, we use a precise approximation for Chebyshev’s $\unicode[STIX]{x1D717}$-function.

We describe the ramification in cyclic extensions arising from the Kummer theory of the Weil restriction of the multiplicative group. This generalises the classical theory of Hecke describing the ramification of Kummer extensions.

In 1956, Jeśmanowicz conjectured that, for any positive integers $m$ and $n$ with $m>n$, $\gcd (m,n)=1$ and $2\nmid m+n$, the Diophantine equation $(m^{2}-n^{2})^{x}+(2mn)^{y}=(m^{2}+n^{2})^{z}$ has only the positive integer solution $(x,y,z)=(2,2,2)$. In this paper, we prove the conjecture if $4\nmid mn$ and $y\geq 2$.

For any finite abelian group $G$ with $|G|=m$, $A\subseteq G$ and $g\in G$, let $R_{A}(g)$ be the number of solutions of the equation $g=a+b$, $a,b\in A$. Recently, Sándor and Yang [‘A lower bound of Ruzsa’s number related to the Erdős–Turán conjecture’, Preprint, 2016, arXiv:1612.08722v1] proved that, if $m\geq 36$ and $R_{A}(n)\geq 1$ for all $n\in \mathbb{Z}_{m}$, then there exists $n\in \mathbb{Z}_{m}$ such that $R_{A}(n)\geq 6$. In this paper, for any finite abelian group $G$ with $|G|=m$ and $A\subseteq G$, we prove that (a) if the number of $g\in G$ with $R_{A}(g)=0$ does not exceed $\frac{7}{32}m-\frac{1}{2}\sqrt{10m}-1$, then there exists $g\in G$ such that $R_{A}(g)\geq 6$; (b) if $1\leq R_{A}(g)\leq 6$ for all $g\in G$, then the number of $g\in G$ with $R_{A}(g)=6$ is more than $\frac{7}{32}m-\frac{1}{2}\sqrt{10m}-1$.

This paper concerns the problem of algebraic differential independence of the gamma function and ${\mathcal{L}}$-functions in the extended Selberg class. We prove that the two kinds of functions cannot satisfy a class of algebraic differential equations with functional coefficients that are linked to the zeros of the ${\mathcal{L}}$-function in a domain $D:=\{z:0<\text{Re}\,z<\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{0}\}$ for a positive constant $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{0}$.

Let $R$ be a finite commutative ring of odd characteristic and let $V$ be a free $R$-module of finite rank. We classify symmetric inner products defined on $V$ up to congruence and find the number of such symmetric inner products. Additionally, if $R$ is a finite local ring, the number of congruent symmetric inner products defined on $V$ in each congruence class is determined.

We investigate images of higher-order differential operators of polynomial algebras over a field $k$. We show that, when $\operatorname{char}k>0$, the image of the set of differential operators $\{\unicode[STIX]{x1D709}_{i}-\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}_{i}\mid i=1,2,\ldots ,n\}$ of the polynomial algebra $k[\unicode[STIX]{x1D709}_{1},\ldots ,\unicode[STIX]{x1D709}_{n},z_{1},\ldots ,z_{n}]$ is a Mathieu subspace, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}_{i}\in k[\unicode[STIX]{x2202}_{z_{1}},\ldots ,\unicode[STIX]{x2202}_{z_{n}}]$ for $i=1,2,\ldots ,n$. We also show that, when $\operatorname{char}k=0$, the same conclusion holds for $n=1$. The problem concerning images of differential operators arose from the study of the Jacobian conjecture.

This is an addendum to a recent paper by Zaïmi, Bertin and Aljouiee [‘On number fields without a unit primitive element’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc.93 (2016), 420–432], giving the answer to a question asked in that paper, together with some historical connections.

We show that every subset of vertices of a directed graph $E$ gives a Morita equivalence between a subalgebra and an ideal of the associated Leavitt path algebra. We use this observation to prove an algebraic version of a theorem of Crisp and Gow: certain subgraphs of $E$ can be contracted to a new graph $G$ such that the Leavitt path algebras of $E$ and $G$ are Morita equivalent. We provide examples to illustrate how desingularising a graph, and in- or out-delaying of a graph, all fit into this setting.

Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathbb{Z}_{K}$. We prove two asymptotic formulas connected with the distribution of irreducible elements in $\mathbb{Z}_{K}$. First, we estimate the maximum number of nonassociated irreducibles dividing a nonzero element of $\mathbb{Z}_{K}$ of norm not exceeding $x$ (in absolute value), as $x\rightarrow \infty$. Second, we count the number of irreducible elements of $\mathbb{Z}_{K}$ of norm not exceeding $x$ lying in a given arithmetic progression (again, as $x\rightarrow \infty$). When $K=\mathbb{Q}$, both results are classical; a new feature in the general case is the influence of combinatorial properties of the class group of $K$.

This work generalises the short resolution given by Pisón Casares [‘The short resolution of a lattice ideal’, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.131(4) (2003), 1081–1091] to any affine semigroup. We give a characterisation of Apéry sets which provides a simple way to compute Apéry sets of affine semigroups and Frobenius numbers of numerical semigroups. We also exhibit a new characterisation of the Cohen–Macaulay property for simplicial affine semigroups.

Let $S|_{R}$ be a groupoid Galois extension with Galois groupoid $G$ such that $E_{g}^{G_{r(g)}}\subseteq C1_{g}$, for all $g\in G$, where $C$ is the centre of $S$, $G_{r(g)}$ is the principal group associated to $r(g)$ and $\{E_{g}\}_{g\in G}$ are the ideals of $S$. We give a complete characterisation in terms of a partial isomorphism groupoid for such extensions, showing that $G=\dot{\bigcup }_{g\in G}\text{Isom}_{R}(E_{g^{-1}},E_{g})$ if and only if $E_{g}$ is a connected commutative algebra or $E_{g}=E_{g}^{G_{r(g)}}\oplus E_{g}^{G_{r(g)}}$, where $E_{g}^{G_{r(g)}}$ is connected, for all $g\in G$.
